Review from Ryan W.
San Francisco, CA
You probably know the story of how SF Mayor Moscone was killed: shot by former police officer Dan White in the Mayor's office November 27, 1978.
But did you know: Dianne Feinstein, then President of the Board of Supervisors, was the person who first discovered Moscone's body.
Feinstein was later sworn in as the city's new mayor (White employed the famous 'Twinkie Defense' and was only charged with 'manslaughter')...so it's kind of interesting to wonder where Senator Feinstein would be without that gruesome murder, isn't it?
And have you paused to check on some of her votes in Congress, lately? http://feinstein.senat...
For someone who supposedly suckles at the liberal teat, her politics kind of stink of Red-State thinking these days...
But I digress...
This park is the 'activity' and sports park for the Marina and the adjoining areas - there is a sandlot playground for tots, and a big grassy area used for soccer and 4 softball/ baseball 'diamonds' with backstops.
There's also a sort of chipping green, a batting 'cage'/ net, and 4 tennis courts. Place is popular after work with various sloshball leagues and whatnot, so plan accordingly.
Moscone loses a star for the crowds and for the fact that, as one of the few places in SF where there's a public court that attracts ballers for a semi-regular pick-up run, the facilities aren't really that great...which leads me to the all-important basketball portion of this review...
The hoops situation is erratic. There is a court on the east/ Laguna side that (to me) has a nicer surface, but usually has scrub games. The better runs are on the West/ Webster St. side, which is lighted, allowing after-hours ball.
Try after work and in the AM on the weekend. There's usually a wait of some sort and can be a lot of smack being talked (standard).
There's also a small and rather shabby 'Rec Center' building on Chestnut, which actually has a hoops court inside. But the place is weird: it's almost never open and even if you get in there, one of the rims is like 9'6" and the other is like 11', and it's dimly lit, so basically its useless.

In need for a little good old-fashioned game of catch, my boyfriend and I dug out our baseball gloves (mine still had field dirt embedded in the straps from high school softball - ha!) and headed down to Moscone park to throw the ball around for awhile. The fields here are impeccably landscaped and the grass is glorious. I wanted to just lay down in it for awhile, but I was too busy fielding grounders and whipping some mean pitches. There is plenty of room to share with the fellow ballplayers, dog walkers, and little kids rolling around in the grass.
Hooray for parks.
And should you decide to play some catch & it's been awhile, watch out the next morning... when I woke up my arm felt like it had died. Lol. -

This is in regards to the outdoor basketball courts. I don't know if it's bad luck, but I have only found pick up basketball being played outside once in about 6 or 7 tries.
The one time I did it was decent. However I have wasted a trip going to this park after work (6 or 7ish) on tuesdays and thursdays to find no one. Also, on saturday and sunday afternoons between 1 and 4ish, I have not found more than 4 players at the courts.
On a side note, my last trip there on tuesday night, I saw basketball being played in their indoor court. The wait was extremely long, the court is small, and the competition is very sloppy. But if this court is open consistently, it may provide as a good place -

Among the MANY fun things that you can do at this park (play hoops, tennis, chip/putt golf balls, play softball, etc), I wanted to comment on the new kiddie play area they finished about a 6 to 8 months ago - I don't know exactly since it was my friend's daughters who exuberantly found it on the way back from The Marina Green with their parents...needless to say, both of them had a blast for hours!
If you have small children or you have friends that have kids under 3 or so that are visiting, definitely stop by here...it's fun for the whole family and it'll give you parents a well-needed rest :) -

The baseball field is beautiful with bleachers and there is a park next door with swings .

Can't stand playing here. Never have. Hated playing here in school (all the "preppy" schools played here). Can't stand playing softball here now. Marina crowd is annoying. Balls from the other fields are constantly coming into your field (worse then Lang). Sure they are well landscaped, but I spent my whole last game wadding through grass clippings. I suppose thats a good start. It begs the question though, why can't Rolph or West Sunset get the same treatment?

Adult sized swings in the playground. That's all I need to say.

I went to Sacred Heart and played baseball for the school, and Moscone was our home field. It has a special place in my heart. While the field itself isn't that good(pebbles, dangerous holes in the grass, a huge lip on the infield...), the weather is generally beautiful there in the spring, and I remember the southern WCAL teams used to hate coming to play at what they considered a dump of a yard compared to their on-campus fields, so that gave us just a bit of home field advantage. I don't know how it is now but in the late 90's when I played the old timers from the neighborhood would gather in the stands and critique everything. They could be harsh, but if they liked your game it was the ultimate sign of respect

i love the location of these fields. Even though I live in Russian Hill, walking to the Moscone fields before a softball game is a nice warm up. From what Ive seen there are tennis courts and basketball courts, a cute little rec center with decently clean bathrooms but the rest is always closed when I go, and a little playground for children. On any given night there are softball games going on any one of the three fields and tennis matches, etc all around. it also offers easy access to the bars on Chestnut and Union for after game celebrations.
