3 reviews for Morse's Kraut Haus Restaurant
Came in today to show my in-laws the "Zabar's of Maine" and they loved it. Great selection of foods. Our favorites are the pickled beets, salami, Kinder eggs for the kids (prize inside each), and 8 year old chedder. Yum!
The new expansion is great and it now feels much easier to navigate within the store. We stayed for the Easter special served in the restaurant and it was great!
I grew up in Maine and have seen the evolution of this place from a simple sauerkraut manufacturing operation to a much more expansive and sustainable business model.
The food is very good and the owners are fairly knowledgable, though the woman with curly black hair is a bit...stressed out?
The whole family seems to help out and you are bound to have multiple servers.
One kind of free pickles on the table is always good and the other is a bit too intense for me.
They always have a ton of free samples of cheeses and pickkles and sometimes meats and spreads.
The rat cheese in the store is excellent. Super aged sharp cheddar cheese.
They could use outdoor seating, but that's being nit picky.
That's 3 1/2 stars. We noticed the sign for this place when we were driving in from the airport on Saturday. We'd never heard of it, so our interest was piqued. Then we found a little flier in the comment book in our unit and some positive comments, so we decided to give it a try for lunch today. The place was founded in 1918 and started out as a maker of sauerkraut. Eight years ago it was bought by a couple who expanded the imported products selection. The restaurant has about 5 booths and we got one. Our hostess was a woman about our age who's local. Our waitress, while younger, was still seasoned. There are two large crocks on the table, one filled w/ sliced mustard garlic pickles, the other w/ sour garlic dills. The latter were heavenly. I couldn't have finished them if I'd tried (big crock) but I certainly made a dent. Their specialty is reubens, corned beef, pastrami, roast beef or turkey. The deli boasts 8 kinds of liverwurst and that's just the beginning. We ordered a corned beef reuben and a pastrami one and split them. Each one was less than $7.00 and included coleslaw and two pretzel sticks. We also ordered a side of beet relish and one of "rat mac", their mac 'n' cheese. Too much food. We ended up taking most of the beet relish w/ us and leaving the mac 'n' cheese, which was good, though not as good as Forbes Mill's or Tam's. The reubens were good, but the ones Alan makes are better. The Boy *rocks* when it comes to reubens. But it was a cool experience and the drive along the back country roads w/ lilacs in bloom and flags at half staff in honor of Memorial Day was lovely.
