Here at Morning Star Karate we train in the art of Matsumura Seito Shorin Ryu, an Okinawa Village Karate specializing in self defense, taught by Master Phil Koeppel, Peoria, IL.
We train under Drake Sass Sensei who is taught by Guy Holtzman Sensei, Palm Springs Karate School, Palm Springs, CA.
We are affiliated with United States Karate-Do Kai®, which promotes world recognition of all member styles in a manner consistent with the spirit of karate-do.
History
Established in 1995
In June of 95, Sensei Sass opened Morning Star Karate of Wickenburg. From 95 to the present, Morning Star Karate has won countless championships on local, state, regional, national and international levels. Later the same year, Morning Star Karate expanded to two locations, one in Wickenburg and one in Surprise, AZ. This surprise Dojo is owned by Sensei Phillip LeGate who teaches along side Sensei Paul Rutherford, both who have trained under Sensei Sass for several years.

Sensei Phillip LeGate began his training in Surprise, AZ under Sensei Drake Sass, earning his rank of 1st Degree Black Belt. Sensei Phillip LeGate is assisted by Sensei Paul Rutherford, who is currently a 2nd Degree Black Belt. The objective of training at Morningstar Karate of Surprise is self defense and to achieve a personal transformation. As karate-ka, we strive to continuously push forward in our understanding of our system and how it applies to life-protection. We want our students, both children and adults, to think, move, act, and perceive differently as karate-ka.
Sensei Phillip LeGate is dedicated to the continuation of Seito Matsumura Shorin-Ryu in Arizona.
