I'm pushing it up to five stars because, while there for the chili competition [see that event], I had three of its now four beers brewed there: A Blonde Ale, an Irish Stout, & a Pale Ale. They were all solid representations of their styles, and a 16-oz. glass was only $4.
For some ridiculous reason, Moonshine gets no respect from Chicago's craft beer community and fans. Some people want to fawn over a brewpub on Milwaukee Ave. near Fullerton which has not even opened. But Moonshine doesn't even make informational listings of solid craft beer venues in metropolitan Chicago. (If you don't want to have its beers [huh?], its guest taps are pretty solid as well.)
I guess beer people can be snobs as well. Tsk tsk. Go here soon. You probably won't find any snobs sitting here. But you could find me.

It is the second definition that rings true for Moonshine (the restaurant). It provides empty, nonsensical food.
I went there with a friend on a Saturday night. The place was not terribly crowded and the service was excellent. Refills were Johnny-on-the-spot. Food came quickly. But McDonald's food comes quickly, too, and no one raves about that.
We split a large order of Buffalo wings. Some tasted undercooked, some tasted overcooked and a rare few tasted just right. But the sauce was nondescript. Yes, technically, they were Buffalo wings, but they lacked the spirit and punch of a truly great wing.
Then we shared a large meat lovers pizza. All the toppings seemed piled on top of the cheese, so they fell off easily. The entire pie could have used more sauce and it cooled very quickly.
Moonshine seems like a cool place to have a drink or chat with your friends, but you'll want to skip the food unless you're absolutely starving.
Moonshine. Another update. Your outdoor space redeems you only because we had 70 degrees on November 7th. (And your corned beef hash is freaking delicious.)
Other than that, service LACKS here when its crowded. I was supposed to get toast w/ my breakfast, which never showed. Waitress disappeared forever. I got my iced coffee with no ice and the following excuse: "there was ice in there when i put it in there. oops." wait - how long had it been sitting out before you brought it over to my table? could i get a glass of ice then?! she disappeared before any of these items were resolved.
good food, awesome weather, even better company. i'm glad i was in such a good mood.

Ah, Moonshine. Famous by warrant of Andre's enthusiasm for the place, and so I finally made it here for more than a drink, and had brunch.
Sadly, there are now no bottomless mimosas - and, rather meanly, they haven't disappeared but are just taped over in the menu, so you knew they once existed... so close and yet so far away. Anyway, their coffee was ok. I know some VERY avid fans of the bloody mary bar!
The big draw to Moonshine is obviously the patio in summer - it's the perfect place to chill out, and their menu consists of perfect chilling out food, burgers, sandwiches and such. Their brunch menu similarly has the usual suspects: from eggs benedict, through pancakes and french toast, to a breakfast burrito. The burrito looks large enough to sink a ship.
I had pancakes and they were very good. I will never understand serving blueberry pancakes with two slices of sausage, and it was a bit unnecessary. However, I also ordered some potatoes on the side as I heard they were fantastic... they are. Cut small, fried to crispy, and with lots of flavour. Everything looked good but - sorry Andre! - nothing spectacular. Maybe the burrito will change my mind one day, but I will need to be extreeeemely hungry to fit it in! All round good value.
I think I prefer this as an eatery, as a bar it looks a bit dark and too sports-oriented (ok, it has 4 TVs, that's sports-oriented for me!), but I'd definitely eat here again and again.
Yeah you can do Moonshine for dinner, Moonshine for your weekend debauchery, but the best thing about Moonshine is the brunch!
They have an excellent self-serve Bloody Mary bar.
When you don't want to wait in line for the Bongo Room or Milk & Honey for an hour on a Sunday morning, try Moonshine.
The New Mexico Chile Pizza " Nuevo" Is awesome! That is really the main reason we come here. Our server even let us order it before the kitchen had switched over from lunch in anticipation. Loved her for that!!!!!
Bloody Mary bar keeps getting great reviews but i personally thought it was boring. Olives, hot sauce and pickles does not a bloody mary bar make. Especially thought it was weird they advertised blue cheese stuffed olives on the bar but just had a bowl of olives and a bowl of blue cheese. I guess the olives were diy too.
Overall though I relly like the food here and the service is always good
I knew I was going to be about an hour late for brunch when I was on my way to Skokie when everyone else was getting there. A vet appointment took priority over my brunch though.
I arrived as everyone was finishing up their food, and there was large plate of potatoes that looked delicious. I quickly ordered the corned beef hash with eggs over easy. There's nothing better than runny eggs over a pile of potatoes and corned beef. The food wasn't as I had expected, the eggs were on the side and weren't runny. It didn't really matter though, everything tasted great.
The waitress was great about me showing up so late and quickly got me both food and something to drink. Even better, she let me have a separate tab (I didn't have time to stop at the bank and had no cash).
It was a really nice place. While it's not my favorite brunch in town, it's very good. I'd have no problems going back!
Biggest Pro: Plethora of outdoor seating
Biggest Con: Won't make mixed drinks not on their cocktail menu
Over the past year, I've come here for lunch or dinner several times due to it's convenient location. The hostesses and waitresses have always been friendly and accommodating. We're always seated and greeted by our server quickly, no matter the season, time of day, people in front of us, whatever the variable. They have indoor or outdoor seating (sidewalk & patio), and in nicer weather, the wall next to the patio is raised so the restaurant has an open-air feel.
Appetizers and main dishes are spaced well and I've never felt like I've been kept waiting. They offer specials but I don't stray from their bar-standard menu (nachos, quesadillas, salads, chicken and rice, etc.) Drinks are kept up on, be it water, beer or mixed drinks, and they always have new concoctions from the brewery to tell you about. Dessert offerings are few, and not worth the calories.
Their guacamole is awesome! I love their chips, and I wonder if they are homemade. The guac makes me miss my favorite place at home (which nothing will ever touch, but it's an acceptable fill-in). Their appetizer and entree portions are huge, which is only bad if you're the type to pick at your food long after you're full. Sometimes that can be easy to due given the amount of outdoor seating available, but usually the bus boys are on top of every single dish and stray napkin. The tables and floors are always very clean (and the women's room, too).
Mixed drinks come in mason jars (or martini glasses, of course) and run about $7-9 each. They have a small menu of house cocktails and offer some of them in large pitchers for $22, which is a decent deal. Usually their quality control is pretty good, but sometimes you can tell they're being a bit stingy with the booze. I question if such hesitation is the norm behind the bar, as recently I was really disappointed when I asked for a very standard drink and was told they couldn't make it. It's on their menu as a modified martini of sorts, and I was just hoping for the standard, traditional version. Come on, I see everything back there!
Really enjoyable spot during the warmer months, but nothing special now that it's gotten chilly.
Step 1 to a girls night out: pick the neighborhood. Step 2: find a reasonable place to get dinner and drinks. Step 3: bar hop and get wasted.
I could not have been happier getting dinner here. Our server was adorable and great. We sat outside in a huge dining area and enjoyed the scenary (86 the homeless man asking the patrons for money). We got the spinach and artichoke dip to start. Wonderful. I then moved on to the Southwest Chicken salad. There were no issues accomodating my request to have grilled chicken instead of fried and I ate every last piece of lettuce.
My only complaint is that the mixed drinks did not have as much alcohol as I would have preferred, but I never seem to be satisfied with that. Bottom line, ff I am in that neighborhood again, I would be more than happy to stop by this restaurant for another meal & drinks.
Had absolutely delicious french toast here and would highly reccomend it. I like that when you order tea, they provide you with your own hot water, mug and a box filled with about a dozen different varieties so that you can make it exactly to your liking. Free refills, too! From the looks of it, I'd neeeever step foot here after dark, but I wouldn't mind returning for breakfast/brunch. Hopefully that godly french toast reflected the quality of all their food!
You know what's odd? We didn't get a menu for the beer that Moonshine brews. Is this a new marketing scheme? Say nothing about your product and hope it sells like hotcakes? Does this fit in with that old moonshine ethos of illicit booze that you have to know about to find? Whatever the case, I thought it silly, especially since, hey, they make a good brew. Glad I wasted my money on some milquetoast beer that WAS listed on the menu.
Besides the beer debacle--and, admittedly, my own wooziness may have played into that whole thing--Moonshine is just okay to me. On Friday night they had a DJ that played some hot jamz but then brought the party down with rubbish. (KC and the Sunshine Band? Really? Is this a suburban wedding reception?) I guess I had a decent time but I was happier at Small Bar down the street. I'd go back to Moonshine but I won't seek it out.
Popped in here for a mid-afternoon drink after exploring the area for the first time. I sat outside on the spacious sidewalk area and felt jealous with the amount of room around me that could never happen while eating or drinking on a sidewalk in NYC. I ordered the house brewed Oktoberfest beer which was generously served in a mason jar. I love these types of things, the simple pleasures in life, a crispy fresh beer in a mason jar. Sigh.
My buddy TK and I decided we weren't really hungry for lunch, but we should probably share an appetizer. Keeping up with the Chicago trend of excessive portions a mound of nachos arrived and in my head I heard the theme from Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind and knew how Dreyfus felt as he tried to wrap his mind around something so mountainous. This thing seriously was like a full bag of tortilla chips dumped on a pizza pan, completely doused in cheese, sour cream, chicken, red onions, jalapenos, tomatoes, and beans. We barely ate half of it and were full. Again, I eat up a storm ALWAYS. The quality wasn't really incredible, but it was serviceable, and you can't argue with the bangforbuck ratio.
Anyways, cool spot, would def return and woudl like to check out the inside in the evening. We had another downhome midwest waitress that was super attentive and pleasant. I wish more of the service industry in NYC would take a page from these folks, stop thinking they are actresses and models, and just keep it real and be a chill fun server.
This is a fun spot with a massive outdoor dining area. The service alone warrants all 5 stars. We had an incredible waitress, she was extremely attentive, and willing to accommodate each of our requests.
We started with the spinach and artichoke dip, which had a great flavor. It had a spicy kick to it - something I wasn't expecting, but definitely enjoyed. Unfortunately, my sandwich was a bit of a let down. The bread totally overwhelmed every bite. I ended up ditching both the top and bottom portion of the sandwich and ate the remainder. The mixed drinks weren't much to write home about either.
I am sure I will return to this spot, but next time I will remember to keep it to appetizers and beer or wine.
love this place.
food is pretty decent and good selection of beers. the servers are usually very nice.
Okay, I have been here twice (because it is around the corner from my house). The first time was for brunch. It was decent, a Denver Omelet with some potatoes that had been under a heat lamp for an hour too long.
Then a couple weekends ago, my friends and I were trying to find a place to watch our football team play (not the bears but during a bears game, so not the easiest task). Anyways, we ask the hostess if our team's game will be on in the bar. She goes and checks with the manager, and they tell us that they should be able to get our game. My friend orders an 8 dollar bloody mary while we look over the menu. Turns out they can't get the game. Not only did the waiter make my friend pay for the bloody mary (the only reason he got the drink is because we were told the game would be on), but he asks us to hurry up so that another group can sit at our table. So my friend ends up chugging half of the bloody mary while the waiter stands there waiting to clean our table off. I usually don't care about this kind of stuff, but it was ridiculous. One star.
Alright food, nothing special, just a bit too expensive for what I received. The location is prime and the outdoor seating is critical. Come on a nice night and just enjoy sitting outside with some good company and a nice drink from their good alcohol menu. As for the food... its not "bad," but I wouldn't recommend anyone to definitely eat here. The steak fajitas were tasty, but really overpriced (and I know a place that is equally good, if not better, for about $10 cheaper... and its just a half mile away).
But once again, come here for the drinks, stay for the outdoor nights, and bring some good friends.
Krystyna's PSA #1: If you come to drinking/food establishments for the quality of service, Moonshine might not be the spot for you. Hello, waitress-girl, I'm looking at you. Flagging two other harried waitresses to have them ask you to stop by our table when you get a chance to break away from the men you were flirting with, WTF? No, we didn't order food, but we ordered plenty of drinks. That should have gotten your attention, because we would have left a great tip. We're mostly generous like that. Too bad being ignored all night can't be rewarded with a deduction from the bill total.
Krystyna's PSA #2: If you love the idea of drinking alcoholic beverages from Mason jars (MASON JARS! Love!) because it reminds you of frolicking in meadows as a kid and drinking kompot (Polish for homemade fruit juice (think fruit punch but without the preservatives)), then come here. Also, the tree hugger in me loves to see Mason jars used for something other than canning:)
Krystyna's PSA #3: If you want to rock a cute outfit on a busy sidewalk patio while people watching - and, oh, is the people watching interesting on this stretch of Division - then come to Moonshine.
Moonshine, mostly FTW: yummy, strong margs (mostly) delivered as ordered., abfab people watching, and slightly inappropriate conversations made our night.
Great food, great atmosphere, wonderful service. Love the couch seating perfect to watch a sunday game.
I wavered between a 2 and a 3 but ultimately went with a 2 star. Here's why --
I have lived a few blocks from Moonshine for a year now. Never once have I said, thought, or considered "Let's go to Moonshine to drink."
I have probably been here 3 or 4 times. The first time I went out to brunch with a group and my brunch was pretty great -- had a chicken (or country?) fried steak with eggs, etc -- it was a big, delicious meal. But the drinks in the AM were way too expensive. It was like $7 for a Bloody in a mason jar. Really? I can go a shit load of other places and get a $3 bloody in a pint glass. Minus points for not letting me get drunk in the morning for cheap.
The other times I have been there, its been a mid-week lunch with my roommate when we're both home. We always sit outside and always get the nachos. Again, drinks aren't that cheap but splitting the nachos is. The bad news is that they aren't that good, jsut huge. For what you pay, I would expect some shredded cheese, not the ballpark stuff poured over chips, lettuce, and tomatoes. Within 10 minutes your nachos are soggy. And there are never enough chips.
Like I said, its more like a 2.5 -- I've been there enough to know what I do and don't like... but it doesn't have enough of one or the other to make me a regular or drive me away. Cut the prices a little and I'd probably like it more.
Moonshine--not really the type of place I would typically go to, but my friend was having her birthday celebration there on a Friday night and had invited a couple dozen people. So I don't know if the lively crowd was the birthday crowd or the regulars. The music was definitely good, but that's about it. The bar area was crowded and it was difficult to get drinks or navigate your way through without tripping on the stairs. We didn't get to enjoy the outdoor patio because it was cold and the interior was uninspired and looked like a sports bar. Might be an ok place for drinks if you live in the area, but I wouldn't go out of my way to go to Wicker Park for this place.
Walking by this place it seemed always packed so I thought I would give it a try for dinner. The food wasn't anything to write home about and the service was pretty slow - I really didn't see what all the fuss was about.
But.
I thought I would give it a second try to check out the nightlife and I must say...I had a blast. The DJ was AWESOME - playing a wide variety of tunes that never got stale. My friends and I were able to dance and best of all we discovered Moonshine's amazing strawberry basil mojitos - fresh strawberries, fresh basil, and lemon...riiiiidiculous!
I wouldn't have picked this place, had my fiance and I not grown weary of our trek around town and down Division on a chilly and slightly rainy night. Fiance knows the muralist, so he had extra incentive to check out the artwork. After consulting w/ the menu to make sure there was something vegetarian friendly for me, we sat down.
It was pretty early on a Friday night and the restaurant wasn't crowded. Our waitress was nice enough. The mason jars which housed our pints was kind of a weird touch, but whatever. We each ordered a burger. I got the veggie and fiance got the cow. I was intrigued by a blackened version of the veggie burger, but when it showed up, instead of any sort of blackening seasoning, I just got an extra patty.
Really...who besides a vegetarian linebacker needs a double veggie patty? So, that got shuffled to the side. At least the patty was a good one and I enjoyed my roasted red pepper and cheese toppings. And, big bonus, sweet potato fries. Fiance enjoyed his burger but it filled him up to the point where he was pretty useless afterward.
The moral of the story, the menu seems a little expensive, and the portions seem a little massive. If they knocked down the portions and the prices, I may consider going back again, but I don't think it's in the cards.
After having a great lunch there yesterday, it is a fun and friendly place for three square meals a day. They have been brewing their on beer for some time now and I think that I saw yesterday that they have one called 773. Chris is a great GM and their staff is very friendly and attentive. Their menu is large and is friendly for adults and kids as I have taken my five-year old daughter their many times.
One of the best parts is that they do offer a 10-spot parking area to help those coming from other neighborhoods or traveling with kids.
Their food is alright (I had the breakfast burrito) but I thought it was priced higher than it really should be. My friend was a big fan of the Bloody Mary bar that they had where she could go customize her drink exactly how she liked it.
Music was enjoyable. Good location for people watching. But the food and drinks, the things that really matter, are sub-par.
This place just used to irritate me because I lived a block away. I've been in here a couple times to meet up with friends who have poor taste in bars, but I hadn't been here to eat.
Finally, I checked into brunch. Rumor had it that a bottomless mimosa option existed, and it did. $18 per person will get you all the orange juice you desire. We had first asked the bartender about it and he then told us that if we started at the bar, then we'd have to pay an additional $18 to have them with our meal. A few minutes later, he came back to tell us that he actually can transfer it to our table. Really? I never knew of that kind of technology.
Before that, he'd been telling us that they're debating on removing that as an option because it's not profitable for them. Oh well. The food was nothing spectacular. I found the portions to be way too small for myself. My plate of biscuits and gravy cost double what you'd find at nearly every other brunch destination.
Our server was nice, but everything else was disappointing. I say this while already having had lowered my standards to give this place a visit.
I'm bumping this up a star due to my excellent experience on Cinco de mayo. Marie was a great server and had drinks ready for us before she even asked if we wanted more!! A mind reader and kept our drinking on track!
Nachos and tacos were great and the patio was full and full of energy. It was an great day at Moonshine!

If you have never heard of that place you live on another planet.
Or maybe on the moon itself.
At least if you are from Chicago, or been there for a while.
Moonshine is seemingly the star of the game. I hear about it every single week (more if I hang out with Andre who should be doing PR for the place) but it is not before yesterday after the first 5K of my life (hurray for me!!) that I was formally introduced.
I have to say that I was won over by their Bloody Marys......which is the only thing I had. Spicy, yummy and for $7 they come with a whole array of options to shake things up (giardinara, olives, 50 different hot sauces - says the menu, more like 20 in actuality - horseradish, lime, lemon). Perfection in a glass.
Solid job. Made me hungry for my next stop - in burger paradise.
Everytime I come here disaster strikes.
Once some cougar put her hand on my BF's thigh at the bar in front of me on a Friday night for like.... 10 minutes as though it was a hand rest. I thought I'd give her the benefit of the doubt- perhaps she was wasted.. until she gave me the look of death that is.. We ended up having to leave shortly after.
Another time I had the world's absolute WORST ketel dirty martini. And ya know, if I'm paying 10 or 12 bucks for a drink can it at least NOT be primarily composed of floating ice chunks?! I prefer not to contract frost bite whilst sipping cocktails..
Buttttt my biggest gripe with this place is they attract ::: shudders:::: children. At night. In high chairs. Screaming while I'm tryin' to enjoy some dranks. Talk about buzz kill. Any bar that allows babies on weekend nights is an automatic one star. Siento.
Moonshine now has bottomless mimosas! Nuff said! Good deal!
The best brunch in Chicago has just gotten that much interesting!
Love this place! Today me and my party of five sat there from noon to four enjoying mimosas. I had the breakfast burrito and it was possibly the best one I have ever had. Great service as usual and always a fun time!

I go to Moonshine quite often. Especially in the summer. The food is pretty good for a bar -- I've never had a bad meal. I actually had brunch here today and I got the Simple Breakfast (2 eggs over medium, turkey sausage and toast). The bloody mary bar is to die for.
Try to snag a table on the patio if it's warm enough. They have really great mimosas too! Rumor has it that they have "all you can drink mimosas" -- if this is true, my next review may have to be that of the treatment center I'll need to check myself into. :)
Over priced drinks and mediocre food. Plus I would never be seen hanging out with any of the kinds of people that go here. Major douche bag city.
Just an update: I usually make it here a few times each year and ALWAYS, without fail--the bloody marys are the best. I don't know if it is the special mixture of ingredients, or maybe the mason jar they are served in, or maybe the huge olives they are garnished with, but they are the best in Chicago.
I noticed that the place was emptier than usual for a Saturday night though...Is it the economy or something else?

Apparently I was tipsy when I went here the last time. I thought it was really good and really fun. Not so much.
The spacious seating is nice, but the chaotic Top 40 hits easily make you feel a little cramped. There are plenty of drinks to pick from so there's no way to go wrong there and the food menu is broad so the same goes for the hungry.
I'm always a little nervous when I see mounded plates of food coming out. I'm talking insanely large portions. That was the case at Moonshine. Some people may like that, but I always assume the Napoleon complex is kicking in. It kinda seemed like it was.
My fish tacos were bland, tasteless even with salsa on them. The salad placed at the seat next to me looked fine, but nothing special. And our waitress was the same.
At one time, I thought this place had a focused menu with good food. No? I'll probably go again if a large group wants to meet up for drinks, but I don't think I'll be making this a dinner destination.
The sandwich to order here is Po' boy. New Orleans style submarine sandwich, seafood of your choice squeezed in crispy baguette. You can choose from soft shell crab, grilled shrimp, or catfish. I went for catfish po' boy with side of sweet potatoes. It was da-li-cious!
Martini tasted OK but the new Mojito that our server suggested was refreshing.
The atmosphere is pretty laid back, you can choose where you want sit. If you don't care about mass carbon monoxide consumption, you can sit in the terrace facing main Diversey traffic. I dunno, whether it was CO or the mojito but I got pretty loopy. I will definitely try their brunch next time.
Meh to the moonshine. This place is a stone's throw from my apt so maybe it's because I've been a bunch of times, but I'm just not a big fan. First off, it's totally overpriced. And not overpriced for this neighborhood, but in general. Mimosas are weak and they're $7. Food is alright and again too much for what it is. My roomate got the po' boy sandwich with shrimp and it came with 3 tiny cocktail shrimp on a huge, cheap roll. It was like $13-14 too.
The cool decor, plentiful outdoor seating and sometimes-hip DJ's make it a two star spot.
You want so badly for Moonshine to be your favorite place to be in West Town. The location is perfect. The decor is great (conceptually speaking). The patio is HUGE (and always full of fun people). The beer isn't terribly bad, but not the best either.
I hate to say this, but the food is where I point my finger at being the big letdown for Moonshine. The menu is just really, really boring.
You won't find one thing that is BAD on the menu... but there certainly isn't anything that is FANTASTIC either. It's all pretty run of the mill American bar food with a touch of a Southwestern flare. If this place revamped their menu while showing some creativity in their new dishes, Moonshine could be a really, really special place in a trendy, up-and-coming Chicago neighborhood.
Went here for a quick lunch.
Incredible. flatbreat pizza was delicious, along with the wings and tots.
swallowed down with a Sierra Nevada.
will go again.
Moonshine is a nice place to hang out and get a bite to eat. I would highly recommend going on a nice day so that you can take advantage of the outdoor seating. As others have said, the food is fine, but there was nothing on the menu that really blew me away. The bar is well stocked though and there are many beers on tap, so go to have fun and hang out with friends.
Chicago has so many places to get good food and this is not one of them.
Awful food, almost nonexistent service, and for what we got (greasy, gloppy, just BAD tasting food) way too expensive.
I got the crab po'boy - it was inedible. I would have sent it back and ordered something else if our waitress had bothered to ask us how we were doing.
My companion got a shrimp salad that mixed flavors in a really unpalatable way. The blackened shrimp on its own was good; the greens were good; the blue cheese was good; the candied walnuts and apple chunks were good; but why would you put all those flavors together? Both of us left almost our entire meal on the plate and still had to cough up over $40 for the privilege.
We were never asked how our meal was, never given an opportunity to tell our waitress we'd like to try something else. When we finally did get her attention to ask for our check it took 30 minutes to get it. Once we got it we were left again for a long time, just sitting there, and finally my companion got up, walked inside, and when he couldn't find out waitress he gave our check to the hostess and asked her to just let us pay so we could get out of there.
My lone star goes to the bussers, who were the only people who seemed to give a crap that we hadn't touched more than two bites of our terrible food.
I really don't know why I'm even bothering giving this place 3 stars.
I have been here 4 times and not once I felt like staying there more than 30 minutes but did anyways because of people I was with.
Never had their food but looks like a nice joint to bring a date but a very bad spot to bring a group of 10 or more for drinks. There are 2 bars but they are located so awkwardly that you can't really socialize with people while ordering a drink. Which brings me to bartenders. I have not once see a smile on their faces.
Last time I was there was on 20th of January.
First round was a shot and my usual vodka and 7-up. $4 for shot and $5.50 for drink.
2nd round, only vodka and 7-up. $6.00
3rd, vodka and 7-up. $7.00.
I chugged my last drink and just took off with a promise to never return unless I really really have to.
