The Moon & Sixpence is squeaky clean, well-lit, and fast-paced and efficient. Now, if that were the truth, what kind of awful British pub would it be? It's dark, smoky, and chill, just like it should be. The food is terrible for you and supremely delicious, the patrons are diverse in age and social standing, and the Guinness is TASTY! I don't know what else they have on their drink lists, because why bother? This is a fun place to have a drink, play a few hands of cards, and while away your healthy pink lungs along with your evening.

Poor drinks.  Poor service delivered with a grimace.  If I were a beer drinker their vast variety of beers would be a bonus, but without that necessity there is no draw to a place like Moon & Sixpence.

The moon is...that being said, one wonders about who would be there unless they understood why the pub culture is...the Irish music in the corner, the Welsh darter in the way to the patio...how Brit can one get here...and the beers are well chosen...but most importantly the roast beef is simply beyound what  others serve in bars...with out the bread,,,perfrect...beer and beef...all else has other places to hang out in...this is what it is...Joyce lives here...and someone here always has a Lucas story about wiring...

Eating British food with weird names is a fun game to play.  It's kind of like Russian Roulette, but with your stomach!  Is that pudding really made out of blood?  Do they have blood-pudding-pops on the Isles?  Why the hell do they have to call sausages 'bangers' when they're phallic enough as it is?

Moon & Sixpence finally solved the mystery for me behind 'Welsh rarebit,' which I'd always assumed was some kind of meat.  It is actually better than meat: it is bread covered with beer and cheese and then broiled.  Beer + cheese + toast?  So simple, yet so ingenious, and perfect with a pint.  Much like M&S!  This place is all about the dark, cozy, beer drinking spirit, and I dig it.

Did you ever think about second-hand smoke?  I mean, if the place is crowded and everybody's inhaling and exhaling, we're really talking about third- and fourth-hand smoke and so on.  So 'second-hand smoke' is really a euphemism, isn't it?

Anyway, I've always wanted to love Moon & Sixpence but me and my mate's increasing aversion to smoky bars has mostly kept us at a distance from this otherwise agreeable neighborhood public house.

Last night, since I was out with buddies I suggested we give it a shot.   The level of smoke seems to be dependent on the time of the evening at Moon & 6p.  My friends and I arrived here after catching an early show at Hollywood Theatre and although we noticed the smell of cigarettes, it wasn't oppressive.

By the time we'd put away a pint and and an entree each, a lot more people seemed to have lit up.  We were just as glad to get out of there rather than order another round at that point.

But before we got to third-hand smoke levels the big pints of ales and cider went down well and we quite enjoyed the pub fare.  I'd say once the smoking is banished and I can taste everything this place could move up to 4 stars easily.

Is it 2009 yet?

I was really impressed by the M & S, I knew I would like the place from the moment I arrived. Yes, it is a bit smoky, but I did not find it to be overwelmingly so, it is a cozy and very inviting Brit. pub with a really nice staff who are personable and check on you reguarly to be sure you are doing fine.
The fish and chips kicked ass! Though it was only one piece of fish (which I would not have ordered if I had known I was only getting ONE!), but it was over a foot long! The french fries were nice thick fries which really absorbed the vinegar perfectly! I am not a fish and chips conossure, but I have had them many times and the M & S does it up right.
Killer food, great beer menue, and full bar! Everything I need!

My girlfriend and I have been going to the Moon for about four or five years now.  It's definately my bar of choice.  Good pub food, great beer selection on tap, good atmosphere and super friendly staff who get to know you.  I feel more like I'm going over to a friends house rather than hanging out at a bar.  It's a very lively and alive place.  Lovely patio for the summertime, steel tip darts, what's not to like!

If you can put up with a heavy heavy heavy layer of smoke you are likely to have a decent time. They offer a good selection of beer and have plenty of places to sit back and chat with friends.

I have friends who absolutely swear by the Moon & Sixpence, but due to its location (out of the way, in the huge Hollywood commercial district) I rarely go there, unless I've decided to make a trip to Trader Joe's or catch a movie at the Hollywood theater. That said, if I lived nearby, I would probably come all the time. Good food, good beer, and lots of seating both indoors and outdoors.

This place deftly avoids the cheesy atmosphere your typical British themed pub is prone to.  The Moon & Sixpence is just a cozy neighborhood joint with a great whiskey selection, 20oz imperial pints, and pictures from the British Isles.  Highlights include a huge patio, darts, free live music a couple nights a week (un-amplified, so you're actually still able to have a conversation when they're playing), a tasty (but somewhat limited) menu, and some of the best staff in town.  In many respects my favorite spot for a drink in Portland, equally suited large group, a date, or a book.

Before going to the Moon & Sixpence I thought all was lost! I began my drinking at a little spot in San Francisco called the Black Horse London Pub, please visit when in the Bay Area! This fantastic spot in the Hollywood District is it! The offering of beer allows you to sample a libation from around the world of every form of brewed goodness. I go too often for the scotch and the excellent pub talk. I usually remember where I live afterwards too.
