This is my favorite place to order Thai right now. They deliver to Southie via foodler, and while the boy and I very much miss living in Cleveland Circle and being able to get Dok Bua and Rod Dee, Montien is the best of what we can get.
Clearly the litmus test of any Thai place is the pad thai. Montien's is solid. I get it with veggies and tofu. The veggies are very good, there is plenty of egg and peanut and pad thai flavor. The tofu could be better. I may opt out of tofu next time. The fresh rolls are GREAT. You get a whole lot for your money and they come with amazing peanut sauce (order extra, you will need it.)
Fiance has gotten chicken wings, a duck dish, and sushi, and said all were excellent choices.
I look forward to the next time we order from this place. -

My friends and I love coming here for their sushi and chicken pad thai. BEST chicken pad thai I've ever had.
Only reason this doesn't get 5 stars is because, like others have said, of the wait staff. But I can tolerate it since going with a group we can become a bit obnoxious anyways. :)1 Previous Review: Show all »

Got the Tom Kha soup with chicken/vegetables. I'd never tried it before and probably won't ever order it again. LOL didn't like it.
My friends got the Choo-Chee Duck and Green Curry dishes. Both were pretty good, but nothing spectacular. -

Did you know? Montien has bento box specials with a serious number of combinations.
I came here with some coworkers and it was a recommendation of one of them. Since we were all dressed in suits, they wanted some place clean. It was clean, except for the weird smell when I walked in. I'm not sure what it was, but definitely wasn't appetizing at all. I ordered the sashimi bento box combination, which was good. In addition, their bento boxes dont always come with rice. Some of them come with chicken pad thai, which is a plus. The fish was fresh (not the freshest I've ever tasted), the sides were good as well. It did feel authentic, but just being in this area, I felt like we had some other better options. It just didn't wow me. Overall, 3.5 stars for being a good, decent place. -

Food - fine
Waitstaff - insufferable
What ever happened to the customer is always right? I've never experienced a ruder waitress. Even if the food was 5-stars (which its not), I wouldn't go back. I wouldn't give that place another dime of my hard-earned money. -

8 teenagers fresh out a bus from NYC, starving and walking around Chinatown. We see all the reviews for Montien, and decide to go here.
It's about lunch time, and it's relatively empty. Hmm...
It's not hard to find any type of cuisine in NYC, so we weren't sure about getting thai food, but if people said it's good, then we decided to try it.
I got a beef pad see eiw, which i thought was pretty expensive for lunch. (About $7-8?) It was pretty good, not as good as ones I've had in NY. Really wanted to try the drunken noodles, but I was terrified it would be too hot. ): Beef was tough, but all in all, a pretty nice restaurant. Really pretty carrot flower garnish though!
Waiters/waitresses did not seem too pleased serving us.
Overall, food, price, and service was okay. -

First of all the food was good. To be fair...
but the service, like most ppl have mentioned, was HORRIBLE!
I would not go back and either would any of the 15 ppl I was with.
Waitress was very rude and unfriendly.
Not worth it, go somewhere else for Thai or Sushi.
Id Recommend Basho for sushi and any where else for Thai...S&M in allston is my fav! -

My boyfriend and I decided to order Montien because we weren't quite satisfied with the Thai place we had been ordering from. It was definitely the right decision. Although I've never eaten in the restaurant, I've gotten take out multiple times, and it's always delicious.
I stick with either the drunken noodles or the pad see ew, depending on whether or not I'm in the mood for spicy. Both dishes are delicious. I recommend getting them with either seafood or shrimp, both of which are about 13$ for a good amount of food. Leftovers are definitely a possibility. The tom yum soup is also very good- just the right amount of spicy. -

This place has REALLY tasty food but bad service and its a bit too cramped (this is coming from a former Manhattan-ite). I definitely made an awkward penis comment at some point during dinner and several couples around us turned their heads in revulsion since they were sitting within earshot (aka within 2 feet of us). On second thought, that might be a personal problem...
Anyway, the options on the menu all sounded great and that made it difficult to choose- but we went with Sriracha Delight (scallop) and Drunken Noodles (chicken). Both were delicious in their own right. The Scallop Sriracha delight was light and tasty but could've been a bit spicier if you ask me. Then again...I like my food so hottt it causes brain damage in most people. The Drunken Noodles were a bit spicier and just made for a great dish all around.
The service...however....blows dead goats. We were encouraged to wait for our seats at the bar. So we looked at the drink menu and picked some interesting Thai beverages. The bartender noticed us about 10 minutes later and promised she'd be with us in a minute. We waited about 10 more and she never came. We were seated without ever having received help at the bar. The waitress for the table did not improve the service scenario much, either.
All in all, I definitely recommend the place if you and your party just want some excellent Thai food and are easy-going enough to deal with mediocre service and a bit of noise. -
Review from Claude F.
Why are state employees so fat?
Answer: because we know where all the best restaurants are, get a lot of free meals and (except me) don't exercise it off. All that equals: Orca FAT!!! (as in the disgruntled killer whale that is the patron saint of all state employees! Big, fat and mad!)
-Though to be honest: I didn't know about this Great Thai place until my coworkers took me.-
Yesterday we all went here for lunch to celebrate the end of open enrollment (which is the HR version of the Hazing!)
What makes Montien an overall nice dining experience is the little touches: The small vase of lilacs on every table (see photo), the beautiful water fountain out front (see photo), the 4 star ambiance despite 2 star prices, and the fact that they let state employees in at all rather then block the door and shout at us "NOOO! NOOO!! WE CLOSED!!! YOU GO NOW!!!! NOOOWWW!!!!" like the Chinese place did when we tried to go there first. (Which is really understandable since state employees have put more all-you-can-eat Chinese buffets out of business then Mao's Cultural Revolution and Great Famine combined)
For appetizers we ordered the Curry Puffs (see photo) you get 4 for $7.95. It is made with chicken, onion and potato mixed in with lots of curry powder. Then wrapped in flour and deep-fried until crispy. Then served with cucumber sweet and sour sauces. I was not a huge fan, but my coworkers seemed to like it. (And they can be picky...just like Orca)
For my Entree I ordered Montien's version of Sweet and Sour Pork ( a huge plate for only $8.95!!!) which is Prime cuts of pork served with delicious Brown rice plus stir fried (and really REALLY fresh) tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, squash, zucchini, pineapple, red & green peppers bathed in a delectable Thai sweet & sour sauce. (see photo) It was Fantasticalicious!!! And here is tip: get it with crushed peanuts as a topping (makes a 4 star meal into a five star meal)
To Drink: I just had water but my coworkers had their usual: Bourbon (and lots of it) They said Montien's Bourbon was "Bettah then Buttah!" (and since state employees consume great quantities of butter- hence the girth- that is praise indeed!)
So Montien is now Mon Ami; I will definitely come here again!Listed in: Places to enable your food…

Very nice atmosphere and polite wait staff. Food was well above average and I came here twice in the week I spent in Boston. If you're in the area this is by far superior to the rest of the asian places which are, truthfully, dives.

Don't go here with a group of friends. They won't accept more than 3 credit cards, if you order drinks at the bar, she'll put you all on one ticket and won't let you split it, then she'll falsely direct you to a BOA ATM. It was an alright experience until the waitress and bartender started getting fresh with us when we did not want two people to pay for ALL of our meals!

I've onley been to Montien about 2 or 3 times, but I have to say, I was pretty impressed. There is a great atmosphere, warm colors and great Pad Thai (my favorite!). The wait staff is usually pretty attentive, but slightly less so when the restaurant is full. However, as that is the case in most restaurants, not so bad! Definitely check it out if you are a Thai food fan! They also offer sushi dishes, none of which I've tried, but it's a nice alternative.

This place is fantastic, it was one of the best meals we have had in the China Town/ Theater district. Had the steamed clam to start, totally delicious, followed by the Green Curry and Spicy fried rice.
My only suggestion would be to ask for extra spicy as by default the spicy is still quite mild.
Can't wait to go back and eat more of the menu -

Disappointing. My friend and I both ordered the drunken noodles and specified twice that we wanted them NOT SPICY. Guess what came out? If you said, "food so spicy it made your tongue burn," you were right. So we had to send back the plates and since the third member of our party did get their food right, he had to sit there watching his food cool. What came out was also way too seasoned (I ended up gulping water like mad for hours afterwards).

Possibly the worst Thai food I've ever had. The wait staff was great though, and it killed the pain without causing new ones. Still, I wouldn't go here again. Hopefully, my next trip to Boston will offer better food.

A delicious and elegant Thai restaurant in downtown Boston. The chicken curry noodles were delicious, and the chicken fried rice was chock full of yummy vegetables. Service was a bit slow, which is why I rated four stars, but we got in and out within an hour at 5 on a Thursday. Crab wontons were also tasty - best I've had so far in Boston. An elegant atmosphere with a very nice interior. Great for a date night or dinner with a group of friends. Bonus: pay with LevelUp and get free credit!

My friend picked a random place to eat on a Monday night. We were both in the mood for Thai so this was what she found. The place was pretty empty for the most part but still a decent amount of people. We sat down and immediately got asked what we wanted to drink. The service was fine but the turn over seemed WAY too quick to enjoy the meal. I felt like we were being rushed through our meal and there were plenty of tables available so it was a weird experience. We shared the spring rolls which were great and I ordered the chicken pad see ew, which I also thought was delicious and there was a ton of it! Overall the food was good and I enjoyed it but I did not like the rushed feeling of it all.

Where is my food?
Seriously, is socially acceptable in Thailand to serve one party at the table 5 minutes before the other? If so, fine, but why try to force something like that down American throats where it's not only unacceptable to do that, but where it's also polite to wait until everyone is served, thus causing your party's food to get cold?
. . .
That rant aside, Montien was actually quite enjoyable. The decor was nice with a slightly cheesily-lit, albeit well-stocked, bar. Our server was friendly and prompt, and the food, when it was finally placed triumphantly in front of me, was delicious.
Overall, it was a pleasant experience and I'm sure I'll be back. . .Ill just be sure to bring some snack while I wait for my entree. -

Went here on a recommendation of a friend of a friend of a friend....ha... how did it get to me???
I think this Thai food is awesome, pricey but awesome. I dine in and regularly come for take out.
As an appetizer my friends and I split the Chicken Satay with excellent peanut sauce- not spicy (Just an FYI: there is no E in spicey..weird) - just regular good peanut sauce. There is a choice of Beef Satay as well. There was enough for the 3 of us to have 2 each!
For an entree, and the reason for my many returns, I had the Beef Teriyaki - LOVE. Comes with a great mix of vegetables that are cooked yet crispy and fresh. The beef has not once had a piece o'fat or gristle or anything I consider inedible. Good quality beef with awesome taste.
One of the people in the party had a hankering for somethin hot n spicy and opted for the Mango Curry Chicken. She ate a very small amount as it was ridiculously hot but otherwise good.
They do have a vegetarian option as the other person in the group chose it- I think she liked it- no raving, no "LOVE", no this is the best ever- but good!
So the dinner beef teriyaki is $20.00. They have a lunch portion for half the price on a good selection of their items- lunch pricing ends at 3pm.
They also had a live asian band after 11pm on the Saturday we went there.
Montien is located sorta on the edge of Chinatown across from the W hotel. The theatre district is nearby and a Starbucks, DSW, H&M, TJ MAXX are within walking distance of the restaurant. -

Ordered tofu triangle(12) pieces, lobster miso soup, tom yum soup, satay trio (2beef, 2chicken, 2shrimp), unagi, sea bass, salmon, tuna, white tuna, yellowtail sashimi (3 each.). The tofu triangles are decent. Pieces are large enough. Miso soup is meh. The lobster in it is chew, only two pieces. Salmon was very fresh. The waitress was very impolite. She inquired if I was going to be able to finish all the food, if I were ordering all those food for myself [P.S. my sister was there with moi]. She said she wanted to know since I'm skinny! WTF bitch!~
Anyhow, the food was also overpriced. When the bill came we were in for a shock. Definitely never ever recommending this place to anyone. -

Really solid Thai food! Went here for the first time this week, and had a great experience. We were seated immediately, and though there were only two of us, we were given a really nice booth. The booth was enclosed on three sides, which was great because it cut down on a lot of noise. Lighting was on the dim side, and the decor was interesting and fun.
For the food we had Drunken Noodles with tofu, Pad Thai with chicken, and the fried vegetarian dumplings as an appetizer. Everything was really very good. The dumplings were small, piping hot and crispy, with dipping sauce to pour over. The Pad Thai was flavorful and not overly oily, very good overall (though I do love almost any Pad Thai...). Drunken Noodles were really delicious, even though I bit into a pepper that I didn't notice eating, and then had to order a Thai Ice Tea just to stop the burning (and I'm no wimp when it comes to heat)! Thai Ice Tea was good, though. Not really cloyingly sweet like a lot of places make it. Looking forward to going back! -

I ordered from Montien's take-away yesterday through GrubHub.
Either GrubHub didn't get through to Montien or Montien slipped, but the food took an hour and a half to make a 3-mile trip at 8 p.m. Still, since I can't blame one or the other, I'm not going to blame either.
The sushi menu was extensive, and they had a sizeable selection of Chinese, Japanese and Thai food, which is a plus in its own way -- none are likely to be stunning, but between 3 East Asian cuisines, you're probably going to find at least one that pleases everyone in the group you're ordering for.
Presentation was strange, even for take-away sushi. Some of the things I asked for as nigiri were simply presented without rice, but then some things I asked for as nigiri were nigiri, so I'm not sure what's up with that.
I ordered Japanese -- nigiri sake, nigiri ebi, and nigiri hamachi as an appetizer, chicken teriyaki as a dinner and finished with tamago. Others in my household ordered Thai and Cantonese.
Their rice was definitely much stickier than I associate with sushi rice -- it's more in tune with Thai rice I've had before. The sushi was definitely not something I'd go back for. The teriyaki chicken was okay, but nothing to write home about either. The tamago was extremely good.
The rest of us agreed that it wasn't great, but it wasn't terrible. While it's convenient to place a large-ish order from one restaurant, for the price, it'd've made just as much sense to just order from three different restaurants and get a much better result. -

I went here today for lunch with my roommate for the first time, and it was great! She got the mango fried rice, and I had drunken noodles. Our food came fast. And by fast, I mean seven to ten minutes after we ordered. I kid you not. The staff was polite, but a bit distant. It wasn't too crowded and everything was clean. My boyfriend is Thai, so I've developed somewhat of an authenticity radar for Thai food, and this was spot-on. Tasted exactly like it's supposed to. YUM! I do wish my noodles were a bit spicier, but that's generally a personal problem because I like things so spicy my nose is running and my eyes are watering and everything is chili :) Overall, it was a good lunch at a fair price - I'll definitely be back for more.

Review from Aditi R.
3.5 stars. It's good solid Thai food with an atmosphere that is a bit more upscale than regular Thai places around the city, but the food is on par/slightly better to the ones I've had around the city and for less $$.
I've had a number of items in this place but what stood out recently were the Spicy Basil Fried Rice & the Yellow Curry. Really good stuff, both of them with a lot of fresh flavor and spice in each. The portions could be a bit bigger for the fried rice, especially considering half of it is hidden because of the vegetables. My main gripe with this place is the amount they charge for rice. While I understand most places have started tacking on a $1 extra for rice, Montien charges $2.25. A big downer in my books. That is far too much for something that used to come free and still does in many other places. Aside from that they have many waiters/waitresses running around to accomodate the burgeoning post movie/show crowd and the food comes out relatively fast so there's not as much waiting involved either. They also have a full bar, something you don't usually see in Thai restaurants.
My favorite Thai place in Boston is still MJ Ready International Bistro, but Montien definitely serves good Thai food. They just need to bring the rice prices down. -

Ordered in (online on Grub hub) on Sunday night and our order came 10 minutes earlier than their 60 minute estimated delivery time. Everything came hot and they got our entire order correctly.
Yes, Montien is a little more on the pricier side for Thai food, but the portions we got are a little larger than the regular ol' Thai place. Dishes are a little on the greasy side, but not abnormal.
The Red Sea- Seafood curry full of clams and shrimp. Came with rice. Super flavorful, very delicious and a tad spicy. The green peas, onions, and red peppers were a wonderful touch. $20 price tag might have been a little expensive.
Chicken Pad Se Eiw - Huge portion here! Not just lots of noodles, but plenty of vegetables. Could have done with more chicken though. Flavor was good, nothing special.
Kai-Jeaw-Goong-Subai (Shrimp omelette with sweet and spicy siracha) - sauce was the best part. Loved the texture of the shrimp in there. Not worth the $11 price tag.
Mango Sticky Rice - lots of mango, ENOUGH rice. Delicious but maybe too sweet.
We'll order again, I think....after we try the other 20 Thai take-out places! -

OK, I want to give this place 4 stars but they say first impressions are everything. My first Impression; Sunday night around 8PM and Ive called every place I can think of and they arent open or wont deliver. I call Montien and I kid you not, within 25 minutes I have pad thai, drunken noodles, panang curry and soup on my table in the North End! After that miracle they could do no wrong.
The Thai food is pretty good, and I eat at a lot of thai places. I tried the sushi once but wasnt impressed. Ive never eaten there, I generally have them deliver a few times monthly and the food is consistent and Ive never had to wait longer than 45min for delivery. Like I said, if it werent for that first time clutch performance I would probably give them 4 stars. -

I was staying just down the street from Montien and asked the concierge for a good spot for sushi. He didn't hesitate to recommend Montien and now I really want to go back and kick him in the shins.
This is not a restaurant to go to if you are looking for good sushi. In fact, I think the Thai food was really overrated as well. I ordered a caterpillar roll and chicken pad thai and a thai iced tea. I asked for the pad thai to be spicy.
I'm usually pretty patient with wait staff. I realize they have 80 million other things going on and stuff gets forgotten... but I had already received my bland pad thai and I still hadn't gotten my iced tea. So I requested the tea and asked for some hot sauce to try and salvage the pad thai.
Pad thai is an easy dish. It's not hard to get right and these guys couldn't get it right. It literally tasted like peanut butter. The chicken was delicious but the dish itself was horribly bland. I added copious amounts of the hot sauce to make it edible and I certainly didn't take the left overs with me.
Another point of contention I had was that I probably never would've received my sushi if I hadn't asked about it. I had plain view of the sushi bar and saw that the roll was ready and there it sat... for minutes... not just like 5 minutes either. It sat until I asked for the roll and the waitress pointed to the sushi chef and said she was waiting. And then went to grab the roll and delivered it to me.
At this point, I wasn't totally sure I wanted to eat the roll as it had been sitting out but I figured, it's cooked eel and avocado... can't be too bad right? Well, the roll was not very flavorful and they were really stingy on the eel... As in, it was barely present in this $10 specialty roll.
All in all, Montien was a vast disappointment, for thai, for sushi and for service -

Great Thai food - unfortunately bad idea for a 10+ person lunch order downtown. Wont deliver unless order is over $200.00. My order was $160 - and I ended up spilling an entire tray ($80) of curry on my way back to the office. They only gave me a $20 credit as compensation. Not inclined to return.

I've eaten here a few times. The food is pretty good, but not spicy at all, even when it's marked extra hot. The duck was pretty meh, and the drunken noodles were passable. The curry puffs are pretty dope.
This joint would get 3 stars, but they're pretty expensive for what you're getting.
I always get takeout, but the interior doesn't look bad. -

Overrated and overpriced. The food isn't terrible, but you should be able to get better thai for what Montein costs.
The red curry had decent flavor, but was very watery.
Drunken noodles were also ok, but pretty clumpy.
The sushi was average.
The sticky rice was good, and some people love their peanut sauce.
This place is alright if you don't know where else to go. You will just be paying extra for location. -

I prefer to order in from Montien than eat there because the service is spotty and the ambiance is not particularly nice either. I like the fact that you can have both Thai and Japanese from the same restaurant, but it's definitely a Southeast Asian (presumably Thai) run establishment. Does not have the elegance of Japanese prepared food at all. All in all, it's pretty decent Thai food and reasonably priced. The sushi is okay, but personally, I think the Thai is a lot better here. The sushi is a bit sloppy and not refined.
3 stars for this place because they have fairly good Thai food and delivery is always fast. -

The food is fine. Actually, the sushi is beautiful. Here's the concern. I ordered and told the waitress I was allergic to shellfish. She said, "OK, OK". Then my lunch arrived with shrimp on the plate. I told her I couldn't eat that and she said, "I know...you can share it with your friends".
Let me be clear. I did not say, "I don't fancy shrimp". I said, "I am allergic to shrimp." I even held up my Epi Pen during the ordering process.
If you like restaurants that don't take the safety of their patrons seriously, this is a winner. -
Review from Tom E.
I have to agree with Brian D here... Montien is confusing. I mean, what are they trying to pull? It has a boring and overpriced menu for white people, it has pretty inviting sushi options being cut over in a corner and it also has a bar/lounge area. So far this sounds all bad. Even verging on a Route 1 Saugus level of Asian restaurant. But... there is a gem hidden within. The confusing thing is if they have this Thai gem, why do they shove all this other stuff at you first? Silly.
The gem I'm talking about is the Thai Menu - a pastel-coloured list of the finest authentic street dishes from Siam. Almost 50 different items, everyone of them sounding interesting and mouthwatering. Don't worry about not knowing Thai either, they're all explained in English and there are a scattering of magnetizing photos that will pull you to dishes like spicy firepots, fish laaps, crab salads and wonderful deep noodle soups. The Phoenix wrote about this menu last year, and yes it is true - this wonderful reality exists (but not at the Cambridge location).
The authenticity of the dishes from this menu rivals S&I Thai but the number of options is almost treble and finding a seat and getting a Singha beer will be far easier here. Prices are noticeably more, but if you want to impress on a night out but don't want to veer into bland choices then Montien could be the place. Better than Dok Bua and Brown Sugar? I think it could be.
I think? Yes, I only think.... because all I've ever had the chance to try here is the som tum and even that was a whistle-stop take-out. The rest of the Thai menu tempted me to abandon my plans and stay for hours but I had a weird food party to go to.
So it's up to you Yelpers... go and see for yourself and let me know. Smash through the door, blast through the confusion, throw out the menu they give you and grab the pastel list of yumminess and explore.Listed in: ^^ Tom and his Yum ^^
