Update 2018: This place went downhill.
I Love this place!! I really liked it before but i love it now. My sister in law and I went in when they were cleaning & closing (we had no idea). They were polite and sweet to still make our food and not turning us away. She had the steak and chicken fajitas and i had the chicken chimichangas. This food is so flavorful, everything tastes fresh. The portions are big and the prices for dinner are decent. She tried the Margaritas which she loved! We ordered 2 to go orders (chimis & shrimp tacos) to take home for our husbands and they loved their food too. We will definitely be back! 1 Tip their Lunch prices (almost half price) are really great and the food tastes just as good.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Jan 8, 2015Previous reviewI love their Chicken chimichangas! After 10 years of eating Monterrey's I find there is no better Mexican in Smyrna/ vinings. From the Bean Dip to Fajitas everything comes out quick and piping hot. Cold beer served up by Bingo is always refreshing as my mouth retreats from the peppers in the salsa, which is a bit spicy for those whose palates can handle the heat, but just right for my taste.
As noted in other reviews the locations and decor leave much to be desired, but when I go somewhere to eat, I would rather have good food than good decor any day of the week.
I COULD EAT HERE 7 DAYS A WEEK, well maybe 5 days, as my stomach would hate me for a constant salsa and taco diet, BUT MY MOUTH SAYS THAT'S GOOD EATING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh yeah and If you are not hungry, I would recommend going to Lime Taquiera off Atlanta RoadHelpful 3Thanks 0Love this 5Oh no 0 - James C.Brooklyn, NY4074Mar 16, 2008
Ahhhh, Monterrey's, the memories I have of this place.
I used to come here on almost every lunch break at good ol' Campbell High, which was literally in the backyard of this establishment. Just on the good times I had here alone I'd give it 5 stars.
The location isn't anything to write home about, unless you were to write and say that you just got mugged. However, the cheap, plentiful eats are worth it. The 3 burrito plate, the chicken nachos (which was everyone's favorite)...
I plan on making a return visit next time I stop at by the SMY. If you live close by, you should too.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - Lisa M.Marietta, GA12323Mar 6, 2013
This is our local go-to Mexican restaurant. We like it because they have great prices and no frills-just polite, fast service with great food. It's walk in and seat yourself, but I've never seen more than a handful of tables full. I usually get a bean burrito with nacho cheese, and my husband usually orders the California burrito. The salsa is wonderful for the way I like it-all minced up until it's just seeds and thick liquid almost. The buffalo wings are also a favorite of my husbands. If you like Mexican food, it's definitely worth trying. We did, and it became a local favorite!

Before the East West Connector was built, Monterrey's Mexican Restaurant was one of the few sit down restaurants off of South Cobb and I285. I've been going to Monterrey's for lunch now for over 16 years and it never gets old. The food is always consistent and the wait staff is always friendly and accommodating. They have two daily lunch specials $5-$6 in addition to the normal Mexican restaurant lunch menu. The Taco de Carne Asada are about some of the best steak tacos I've had. The Chicken soup is great too. I especially like the fact that they put your taco(s) on a side plate and not directly on top of the beans like some Mexican restaurants do.
About the only down side is the location, in a small old rundown strip mall right off of South Cobb. But hey some of the best places are holes in the wall...just look at Carvers.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jessica G.Marietta, GA96253119Jul 18, 2011
Great food, great service, and great drinks for the best price!!
They know how to do everything right here! Chips and salsa come as soon as you sit down. Then someone is there shortly after to take your drink order and food order when your ready. Food comes out super fast and made to order! The steak fajita's are out of this world! The cheese dip with spinach is a must! If were not visiting El Toro in Roswell we always come to this location vs. other mexican joints because we seem to like to staff better, it's clean, and closest to home.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Mel G.Smyrna, GA2948Mar 4, 2008First to Review
I can't believe that I've not reviewed this place yet since it is in my "weekly rotation" of places to visit. If you wanna find me on Thursday nights, look no further than Monterrey's on Atlanta Rd.
Folks, just dig a hole and bury me because it just doesn't get any better than this! While the surroundings leave a lot to be desired (more on that in a minute), the food and service are both just fantastic!
Thursday nights they have the Mariachi band playing and while I'm not normally a fan of overweight hispanic men dressed in skin-tight polyester outfits with fake brass accessories and playing musical instruments that look like they were constructed in the early 17th century, I have to admit that it does draw a very diverse crowd from the young singles/couples to the kids and BOY do those little tykes think they can dance (just don't spill your sippy cup on me, Little Suzy because I'll have to beat your ass if you do)!
They have plenty of waitstaff because of the crowds that they draw. One of my dining companions (and we usually show up with 6-8 people each week) recently said that the waiters were busier than a one-armed Atlanta taxi driver with the crabs! That about sums that up, eh?
Monterrey's is about the only thing left in the soon-to-be-demolished Belmont Hills Shopping Centre so parking is definitely not a problem. The plan is to relocate/reopen/remodel when the financing for that development goes through but in the meantime, they're staying put and it their "ghost town" surroundings don't seem to hurt business.
Never had a bite to eat here that wasn't good. Burrito Tampico is a grilled shrimp and mushroom burrito (VERY LENT-FRIENDLY FOR YOU CATHOLICS READING THIS) and is served to perfection. Acapulco Cheesesteak is a steak quesadilla-type entree smothered in queso. Mmmmmmmm! Hey, I never said it was entirely healthy!
Its located at the intersection of Atlanta Rd. and Windy Hill Rd. so if you're in the area, keep an eye out for it and stop by. You'll be glad that you did!Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 7Oh no 0 - Lindsay S.Smyrna, GA28Apr 2, 2008
Great cheap mexican!
I go here about once a week for lunch because it's close to work. I've only tried the chicken fajitas because they're so good i don't want to get something else. The chips and salsa is yummy and fresh the service is really quick and it's only $6-7 for a plate of fajitas at lunch.
The location is pretty shady and the restaurant itself isn't in that great of shape. I think there are other locations but I haven't tried them.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Tom N.Woodstock, GA51361204Oct 4, 2010
Dig the prices in here 3 tacos under 5 bucks works for me! Our chips stayed filled and the salsa was decent. Food came with the usual quickness. I will go back here for sure. This is a wonderful place for a cheap date.

Mexican is our go-to, and we really love Monterrey. Their vegetarian options are much better than at most other Mexican restaurants, and their queso is delicious. I also like the fact that, although Monterrey is family-friendly, it's usually not filled with a bunch of children. My husband and I often go to Monterrey even though it's not our closest Mexican restaurant simply because we know there will be a better adult-to-child ratio.
