Side note: Seaside Beach (which shares the same strip of beach) is NOT dog-friendly... so make sure you're at the right side of the beach before setting up camp if you're planning to bring your pets. We learned it the hard way, after finding the *perfect* spot and settled in... a ranger drove by and much to our dismay, kindly informed us of their beach policy. GAH. Oh well...

Aka Del Monte Beach. A long sandy beach that stretches from Seaside to Monterey.  This beach is popular for all sorts of beach activities including kayaking, surfing, fishing and picnicking.    During spring highest tides and fullmoon/new moon, the pier ot the  south end of the beach channels grunnion onto the beach for their annual mating ritual.  it only lasts a couple of  hours and then they're gone for another year.  If you're lucky you catch them at it.  The female uses her tail to dig down into the wet sand and lays her eggs.  the males flop all around her trying to release sperm into the water draining down into the sand.
