10 reviews for Monterey Park Golf Course & Driving Range
Three words that will guarantee a great time.
Drink, Play, Drink some more!
You need to have your own clubs and I suggest to bring them all because they will come in handy.
I think it was about $9 to get the bucket of ballz and they only accept cash. Lot's of beginners come here. I need to practice a little more so I can kill our opponent's on Par 3 and eventually move up to Par 4.
The future Cynthia Woods!!!! lol
Went here and tried out these golf balls that supposedly glow in the dark. These fancy golf balls are translucent and have a small tunnel of a hole running through it. In this hole, you place a tiny glowstick that illuminates the ball so you can find it in the dark. They didn't work so well.
You know what else doesn't work so well? Teeing off a rubber mat over concrete.
I might give this place another chance, but next time I'm bringing a mat of fake grass to tee off of. You heard me!
It's funny that I've never reviewed this place before. But playing the course just once I know that it's not the best golf. Very simple yet very hilly course. Designed for beginners or weekend players so this course has a lot of beginners and non players. Don't be surprised by the long rounds and the lack of playing etiquette of the people around you.
The range is okay, not that long and not that well taken care of. The ball picker truck is an actual truck, not a tractor. A beat up Toyota with a rake in the back. The mats at the practice range are outdated and the footing there is quite uneven, not good for practice.
Last, the crowd that arrives there is a little dodgy. You're not in the best part of town but no trouble happens here. A lot of beginners and people who have never golf practice here. The staff here is very nice, the Japanese guys at the range shed are so nice and very helpful. Otherwise, its a simple place to hang out and hit some balls. A recommendation from me.
FORE!!! (OK maybe it was more like "THUD"--as my poorly swung club crashed into the turf short of the ball)
So I've decided to learn golf (aka embarrassing the crap out of myself). A few co workers and I hit up Monterey Park Driving Range one fine Saturday Morning.
The range is pretty standard, and un-fancy. A large bucket of balls will run you $9. The corrals are covered to keep you cool... keeping your own cool when you suck on the other hand is something the range can't help you with.
If you suck as I do, a dark pair of shades is recommended to avoid eye contact with others when leaving with the small amount of pride you've managed to take with you.
Kinda shabby.....
Kinda fun......
Kinda drunk.....
Kinda cold at night....
Kinda slow.....
Kinda just come here to learn to play....
Kinda cheap....
Kinda Camp Whatevs!
This is the first golf course i've ever been to.
9 hole golf course. you only have to use/need your drivers on the first and last hole. honestly you don't really even need your driver for the first hole, u can make the green in two shots. since its planted on a hill, they have a hole that is about 120 yards and slants at a 45 degree angle down for about 100 yards. pretty interesting.
Last tee off time in around 8:30. varies depending on season/day.
the course is fairly well lit, though i don't think its the best kept green. inparticularly the fairways, which can be overgrown or with a bunch of divots.
the driving range is cheaper than alhambras range, though its mostly filled with older guys (i took up golf strictly for the girls, what an idiot sport to choose to get girls, hahahah). alhambras have the 3 story thing which i think is more fun.
Other than that, nothing special about this place. i got my first and only birdie on this course so YEAHHH!
I felt like reviewing a golf course, and this one looked sad and lonely because it didn't have any reviews, so here is review #1.
I like this course a lot. It's a fun 9 hole par 29 course where you can work on your short game and still pull out the driver on a couple holes. The first and last holes are par 4 and the others are par 3. It's just off the 10 freeway up on the hill in Monterey Park so it's perfect after a long day at work to come here and play a round on a nice evening. They have lights so they're open past dark and you can play a round in about 2 hours or less. The greens fees are cheap (somewhere between $10 or $15 I think). You can make reservations a week in advance. If you're going during the week in the evening, it's a good idea to have a reservation because they get busy. They have a driving range and putting green to practice on as well.
Here's a quick rundown of the holes. I haven't been there for a couple months and I don't have a scorecard handy so I don't know the exact yardages. Don't hate me if I'm a little off on my estimates!
Hole 1: About 250 yards, pretty straight and a sand trap about halfway down the fairway.
Hole 2: About 150 yards and straight. Don't slice too far or you're down a big hill.
Hole 3: This one is fun. It's short (120 or so, maybe shorter), but down a huge hill! The green is at a nice steep angle. Try to land below the hole because you'll be much better putting uphill than downhill!
Hole 4: About 130 yards, uphill to the green. Tree to the left side that gets in the way. Aim to the right and there's a hill next to the green that you might get a bounce or roll from.
Hole 5: Another around 130 yards I think, but you have to go over a tree and you can't see the green from the tee. Don't go too far left or you'll hit the sand.
Hole 6: Straight, maybe 110 or 120 and a little uphill if I remember right. Hill to the right of the green that you can aim for and roll onto the green.
Hole 7: Pretty good downhill shot and longer than it looks. I usually come up short on this one. Just watch out for people driving from hole 9 on this one. If they slice it you could get hit.
Hole 8: Short (maybe 120). Pretty easy so you can make up a few strokes here if you're not doing so well.
Hole 9: Longest hole, about 300 yards. Dogleg right, a few trees, raised green and a few sandtraps around the edge of the green. Challenging but fun hole.
Fore!
You come to play golf. But you'll leave with a fiance...
Don't expect that much when you come to this MP golf course. You have to tee off on a MAT on ASPHALT for the first hole. The middle marker LOOKS like a flag with its own hole and many men (me included) have made themselves look foolish trying to putt into that hole. The other holes aren't much better. Seriously, where's the grass?
But golf isn't the reason why you came here, right. No sir! This place is teeming with middle aged Chinese and Japanese aunts and uncles who are dying to pair you off with their niece/daughter/grandchild/pet animal who are *gasp* approaching the ripe age of 26 but they're still single.
And please don't tell you went to a well-known school like Cal. Tell them you went to the University of Nova Scotia. Otherwise, you'll be barraged with variations of the question: do you know David lee, do you know david chan, and so on and so forth everytime you catch up to them and wait politely before they tee off.
Come here if you want a potential wife. Look elsewhere if you want solid golf.
About 11 bucks for a good 9 holes here. Short par 3's to long par 4's. A bit of everything to use most of your clubs. Pace is pretty good. No water hazards, but typically some grounds crew working on some hole at a random time of day.
When I started playing golf in college my buddies and I would come here and since then we've tried so many other places and still we come back to here. The driving range is my favorite, it's high up in the hill, it's single level and the atmosphere is just chill. I enjoy coming up there to relax, and relieve some stress. Just be careful carrying that bucket of balls up the ramp to the range, they really overfill those baskets to the point where a slight slope has them falling out. The course itself is fun, I like the change in elevations since it's on a hill and it's a good fix, only 9 holes though but good enough for me.
