For the price and location, Monterey Bay Lodge can't be beat. A little under $100/night got my girlfriend and me a queen room, right across the street from Monterey Bay. Comfortable beds; a large, clean, and very new-looking room; nice staff; and a 20-minute walk to Cannery Row and the Aquarium make this hotel a perfect option for any traveler on a budget.

The hotel is located in a relatively quiet part of town, away from the touristy area around Cannery Row. There's a lovely park and lagoon across the street and it looks like you can rent paddle boats to cruise around the lagoon.

Plus, you get a coupon for the onsite cafe, perfect for breakfast before heading out for the day.

I wanted to get away for a couple of days for my birthday, but I didn't want to spend a lot of money on lodging. The Monterey Bay Lodge was the perfect compromise between expensive/luxury and cheap/(dis)Comfort Inn. I sent my partner into the lobby to check in while I waited in the car, and when she came back out she looked kind of shocked and gasped, "Wow, these people are SO nice!"  Our room had a king sized bed and a fireplace. It was small and nothing fancy but very cute and very clean. You can (and we did) walk to Fisherman's wharf, Cannery Row, and the aquarium from the lodge, but it would be kind of a hike if you had young kids or old people with you. The bay is right across the street and, as others have mentioned, there is a lovely lagoon right next to the place.

The only reason this place didn't get five stars was the restaurant. Normally I wouldn't rate a motel down just because the attached restaurant was sub-par, but Monterey Bay Lodge gives you a coupon for this restaurant when you check in, so they are recommending the place, and this place is BAD. We didn't use our 25% off coupon, but even if we had the food would have been overpriced. I had two pancakes, a side of sausage, and a cup of coffee; my partner had biscuits and gravy, a side of bacon, and a cup of coffee. The bill came to a little over $26.  Haha, maybe we are just used to the lower cost of living of the SF Bay Area, but I thought that was a little steep, particularly since the service was terrible and the food was bad. Our waiter got brownie points for smiling a lot, but our food took forever to get to us, and the place was not busy at all. With an additional long wait time to get the check, it took us well over an hour to get out of there, and less than twenty minutes of that were spent eating. During all that time we were only offered (half-heartedly) one coffee refill. How can you screw up biscuits and gravy? If you want to find out, go to Marlyn's restaurant at the Monterey Bay Lodge. It had an off taste, and someone had added green peppers(!) to the gravy. Blech. The pancakes were mediocre. Do not waste the first part of a beautiful day in this poor excuse for a restaurant. There are nicer tourist traps (with better views) at the wharf.

We will probably go back to the Monterey Bay Lodge. It's the perfect little place to stay when you don't want to splurge too much but can't stomach the depressing dreariness of cheap-o lodgings. The staff there could not be any nicer. Just steer clear of that horrid restaurant!

We enjoyed our stay here.  It's not a super fancy hotel but very cozy, clean, with a very accommodating staff.  I did not encounter any rude employees from the front desk to the maids.

For a 2 night weekend getaway which included three two-day aquarium tickets, it ended up costing us a little under $300 bucks.  We stayed in a double queen room with a nice size refrigerator.  This is a must have for Mom's that need to store milk and other goodies for the kiddies.  The room we stayed in also had a little patio sitting area which was cool for the parents to hang out and chat while the kiddies sleep.

It's also in a great location situated right across the street from Dennis the Menace park.  Unfortunately, it rained so we were unable to take the kids here.  You can literally walk to the wharf from here.

My only complaint was the pool is supposed to be heated and the temperature should remain between 70-80 degrees.  It felt more like 50-60 to me and there was too much chlorine in the water.  Also, the pool towels are no bigger than a hand towel so bring your own.

Other than that, no complaints.  I'd definitely stay here again.

If you're on a budge up the coast of California i'd would recommend trying out Monterey Bay Lodge. Trying to avoid major hotel chains and being my only experience up to date in Monterey i was satisfied with my stay.

The room is nothing special, and nothing bad either. I'm always happy to see free water bottles in the fridge.

The pool and jacuzzi were nice with everyone having a glass of wine and relaxing.

I also believe you can bring pets, but you'll have to double check that.

We chose the Monterey Bay Lodge based on Yelp reviews.  We are a family of 4, and our kids are 8 and 3.  We stayed for 3 nights, and we would definitely recommend this hotel.
The hotel staff was great....friendly and helpful.
The room was clean and there were lots of pillows, which is always a plus for us.  We were also pleased with the small fridge and microwave, as well as the coffee maker.  The blow dryer was one of those small, travel sized ones, which won't do the job for me, but is handy if you don't want to pack one.  There was also a lighted makeup mirror, which I love!!
There were also plenty of hangers, an iron, and an ironing board.
The shower is on the smaller size, but the shower head was pretty good.  I ran out of hot water fairly quickly one morning, but did OK the rest of the trip.
Free wi-fi was a bonus, as was the free HBO on the flat screen TV.
Our room faced the street, but was not noisy at all, which I was grateful for.
All of the rooms have a sliding glass door that leads out towards the pool, and there are two chairs and a table outside that door.  The only thing that I found awkward was that while that sliding door is handy for getting to the pool, you can't lock it from the outside, so we never really used it.  Instead, we went out the front and around through the lobby to get to the pool.  It was a short walk, though, so  no big deal.
The pool is small but does have a shallow kid friendly side.  Although it's heated, the boys did not stay in long before they were freezing.  The jacuzzi was big, especially in relation to the pool.
The location is great: walking distance to Fisherman's Wharf, and a short drive to Cannery Row.  The park across the street is also a plus, especially if you have kids.  The beach/bay is directly across the street.
Also handy is the gas station with mini-mart right next door.
As for the on-site restaurant, we did not have a good experience...the waiter got our order wrong on several items, the OJ ($3.15!) tasted funny, and they were out of milk "until tomorrow"!  The whole time I was just thinking, "I hope this meal doesn't make me sick!"  In the future, I'll be sticking to Denny's.
So overall, for all of the amenities and the location, this place is great!

I like this motel a lot. I stayed here for two days. The front desk were very humorous and bubbly. The rooms are very clean, the bathroom was small. The room is so blue, I felt like a smurf spending the night here instead of a igloo typed 'shroom.

The wharf was only a ten minute walk, had dinner at Isabella's Italian restaurant. (Yum!) Will stay here again!

A nicely renovated motel in Monterey.  Super close to the beach and a 10 minute walk to downtown.  If you have kids, you'll appreciate the park just across the street.

The rooms are definitely a big notch above your average motel.  They are squeeky clean with nice comfy beds and linens, refigerators, and other amenities.  The heated pool and hot tub are great.   Both are open year round, which I appreciated very much when I was there in February.

We actually stayed here over our wedding weekend so we could save money and splurge in Maui on our honeymoon. Truth be told....we also stayed here to give ourselves some space, as most of our family was staying in Pacific Grove and Carmel!

As far as lodge/motels go this is definitely one of the nicer ones. I can't imagine Anton Chigurh from "No Country For Old Men" coming up to your door with his trademark air cattle gun ruining your trip with a late night visit. The lodge is located right behind the El Estero Park by the lake and a short walk to the wharf and downtown. The rooms are nice and clean with large TVs and free WiFi for instant yelping. There's even a large heated pool for those late night swim meets. I've stayed here a couple of times with my bikes whilst attending the Sea Otter Classic.

This was a great off-season find for myself and two friends when we found ourselves quite tired after a long day on the road a few hundred miles (or in my case, a few thousand) from home. For about eighty bucks we got two new queen beds with soft linens in a super clean room just steps away from both the beach and a little lake. We got coupons for the attatched eatery and were pleasantly surprised with a super tasty breakfast on the cheap. I'm sure in high tourist season it may well have proved a different story, but I'll remember this place for another time I want to wake up and head straight for the aquarium for the day without paying through the nose.

Stayed here on business for a few days.  Very nice.  The bed was very comfy and it was very quiet.  The pool and spa are heated and open year round.  I just had one bed but I know they have cottages as well.  My boss stayed in one with his wife and really liked it.  They have a small restaurant downstairs.  I ate lunch there and really enjoyed my sandwich.  It is within walking distance from downtown but it is one of those walks that a moment longer and it would have been too long.  The reason I gave it 4 stars is because the shower was SO FREAKING SMALL.  Everytime you turn around you knocked something over.

A very nice modest priced Hotel close the Bay. The place is well maintained and the rooms looked recently refurbished and were very clean.  The bed was very comfortable and everything looked new.  The motel has a connected restaurant and it is just a few blocks from the restaurants and shops on the Pier.  The towels were nice and fluffy.
