We did a family guided kayaking tour of the Monterey shoreline. The staff were friendly and courteous and took great care of us. We made reservations and arrive early as recommended. Please keep in mind that parking is not free. We liked that a wetsuit and light jacket rental are included in the price. Our guide was great, but it was hard to hear her once on the water unless we were very close to her (suggestion: an amplified speaker would really help!). We enjoyed the beautiful day on the bay and were treated to sight of many sea lions and sea otters. It was a magical time for all of us. We would definitely return.

Amazing service. Some of the kindest people you will meet. We had a great experience for our first time - thank you!

Great location, great equipment, nice staff, and an amazing experience. If you have the time then be sure to add this to your Monterey experiences.

I went to this place with my daughters for a guided kayak tour around the Monterey bay. The tour was about 2.5 hrs, we arrived half hour early to get checked in. The staffs were very friendly and helpful. We were worried it would be too cold to be out on the ocean because the highest temp of the day was 67 degree but we all had fun kayaking, sightseeing seals, sea lions, crab, sea otters, and learned about kelp forest. They provided fishermen wetsuit, jacket, and life vest which definitely help keep body warm in a cool day. Parking are right in front of the shop but it is public so paying parking fee are required. I think I paid close to $7 for 3.5 hrs. Only thing I regret is to bring/buy the waterproof bag for my phone so I could take some pictures of my kids. The overall experience was great, price were very reasonable, and tour guides were knowledgeable.

Our two guides were magnificent and very knowledgeable. Both making sure we were safe but also ensuring we had all our questions answered and that we were having a blast. It was an absolute dream to be able to night kayak with our favorite mammal, Sea Otters, and see Bioluminescence from plankton. They had all the gear you would possibly need to keep warm and even greeted us with a warm shed and hot cocoa upon return. Such awesome service and lovely feels.

Danny is the man!! Really listened to what we were interested in seeing and took us to the best spots to make the experience so memorable. The one on one tour with him felt like hanging out with a friend! Truly couldn't have asked for a better end to our trip, thank you Danny!

What a great experience. Can't recommend it enough. It is a work out, so be prepared for that, but if you're up to it, it's definitely worth the soreness. We did an early-morning reservation. We got a double. With the price, they included all the necessary gear, wet suit, splash jacket and life jacket. Wear clothes (shoes especially) that you don't mind getting a little wet.
The safety brief was...quick and easy. Then they just send you on your way. 4 hours is PLENTY of time. We were done in a little under 2, even with us just poking around the bay.
Saw all sorts of wildlife including a dozen or two otters. Would absolutely recommend.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Melanie I.Bay Area, CA120958Apr 9, 2022Updated review
We have toured with this group many times and there's always a 15 to 20 minutes ramp up where people slowly get their gear on and they explain to you how to use a kayak, from a spot on the beach.
I would not rent from them if you might live so far away you might hit traffic on a Saturday. Even if you call ahead and tell them you'll be 5 minutes late and they say it's okay because they will try to wait if you aren't very late (which has always been my experience when I am the on-time person) or can always just change it to a rental if you miss the tour.
20 minutes later, you still might show up 5 minutes late and the tour might have left right on time and they will tell you now that they can't rent to you because it is too windy. We even asked is there a chance that they are still in the beach doing the "how do you use a paddle" since we've all kayaked many times, but no we were told they cannot go on that tour they've already left.
I kid you not every time I come on this to we are standing around waiting for people and listening to a very long and helpful explanation about how to use a kayak. But not today.
I am so unhappy. I will definitely be using their competitor in the future.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Sep 6, 2015Previous reviewWe have gone on their Monterey Bay guided tour twice now and love it! My family has a very small amount of river/lake/reservoir kayaking experience, but had never been out in the ocean before so we felt a tour would be the safest way to get started - but it turned out to be so much more than that! Not only are we following their guide around safely within the space of the harbor, but they are telling you facts about the various creatures you will see (and there are many - prepare to get up-as-legally-close with Sea Lions, Harbor Seals and Sea Otters! Plus, of course, many more far less cute ocean-dwellers). The first tour was just my husband and me, but we were so excited we brought back our 10 & 13 year olds. Of course upon hearing it was "educational" groans were emitted but they had a blast and agreed it was fantastic. One even got their kayak bumped into by a curious sea lion.
This time our tour had just 8 people and one guide, which was a great ratio. Each time the guides have been very friendly and out-going. They do accept tips, and I have yet to see a place to officially give them so you just have to find them afterwards.
This was an experience we will never forget. Both times we chose the 3 pm tour in a summer month and the weather was perfect to don their loaned wet suit and windbreaker. Remember, no matter how warm the weather is - the water is still going to be ice cold!
Thank you Monterey Bay Kayaks for two wonderful tours. We look forward to returning and renting kayaks on our own to brave the bay on our own next time.
On a less pleasant and not-their-fault note: A warning on the parking. At $10 for the day it was a bargain, but we did have to wait a bit for a space so do plan to come early if it's a weekend as the lot is not huge (though bigger than the adjacent beach lot). After we left MBK we found that the entire row of cars we had parked in was blocked in by a new row of very inconsiderate beach goers (at least two of the cars were from the beach as they returned sandy from that direction after we had been sitting there for 20 minutes waiting to leave). They were all lucky that we did not have to be somewhere immediately, and that they got back before the tow trucks arrived. So, firstly, don't be inconsiderate of others and block them in, secondly, be sure to park in one of the skinnier areas of the lot and not the deep one where thoughtless self-absorbed people can make a new row and leave you stuck. This was definitely an unhappy end to our tour that we had to take a bit to regroup from and remember how amazing the day had been prior to our exit.Jul 24, 2014Previous reviewFantastic! As fairly novice kayakers who had never kayaked in the ocean, my husband and I booked the guided Family Adventure tour for us. It was wonderful! There is on-site (pay) parking, an adjacent shop that sells pretty much anything you need (and I am looking at you, husband, who forget yours in the hotel room), they lend you wet suits, and wind breakers. I recommend borrowing at least the wet suit because even on a warm July day the water is still cold and there is absolutely no avoiding getting at least your lower-half wet. So bring your swimsuit to wear underneath. The guides were friendly, very helpful, extremely knowledgeable about the local wildlife and gave mini presentations on each we saw. Our group had 11 kayakers of varying novice aptitude, a guide and an assistant guide. We felt well watched after and had a wonderful time. It is well worth the cost for your first trip out into the bay to take the tour.
My only disappointment is we were running too late for me to go back and buy a waterproof bag for my phone so that I could take pictures. Next time I will bring an old digital I care less about and buy the bag.
We will definitely bring back our children next time! - Sarah M.Albany, NY03Jul 14, 2023
We did the Elkhorn Slough tour. Our tour guide, Emma was wonderful. Kind, patient and knowledgeable. We had a wonderful time and saw so many animals. This was a highlight of our trip.
