Review from Aimee K.
Montelle has been my go-to winery since I was old enough to go to them, and I knew variety is the spice of life and everything, but not always in the case of Augusta wineries... when you find one, it's probably wise to keep going back. People might say I "get around" when it comes to wine, but I feel pretty good about my reputation... and I seriously don't know any better way to spend a gorgeous Sunday than drinking some at Montelle.
The parking lot is pretty big, but half of it is at a slant which makes walking when you're trying to leave pretty interesting. When you make your way inside, you walk into a giant atrium-looking building where there is wine aplenty and also the faint smell of pizza which you know you'll end up ordering later. They'll let you taste-test anything you want so you can pick a wine that works for you, but I always get the Seyval Blanc. It's a semi-dry (more dry than semi) white and it's really the only wine I can drink from the Show Me State because it's not overwhelmingly sweet.
Food choices are just so-so, but you can get sandwiches, meats and cheeses, Billy Goat chips as well as the aforementioned pizza. I can't believe I'm about to admit this, but I do something every time I'm at Montelle I end up cringing about the next day... I eat beef sticks. Yiiiiiikes. Yeah, I unwrap a processed stick of beef and naw on it like I was raised in a barn. I can't help it! When you're hungry you're hungry I guess...
The atmosphere is damn near perfect, and you can see miles of beautiful scenery. So much green! It's incredible we have a view like that so close to St. Louis. They also have live music all the time, and last weekend there was a Jamaican drummer named Lenny who was equipped with a tambourine as well as this hideous hat that had fake dreadlocks hanging down from it... just priceless. For a brief moment I was a wine drinking, beef stick eating, Jamaican man with dreadlocks. If that's not attractive, I don't know what is! I'll keep those pictures to myself.
Good times in Augusta... make a trip to the biker bars after your leave & your day is complete.Listed in: If You Love It So Much..., Best Wine Evar, Patio Addiction

Best view of the amongst the Augusta wineries-just beautiful.
Decent wine, great chocolate, and ONE bathroom!!! C'mon, put another one in there. -

Had a nice tasting here, probably my favorite of the several other wineries that are in a 2 mile radius of this place.
I enjoyed a larger number of wines at Montelle than at the other wineries nearby.
While the woman providing us with our tasting was sort of infuriating and obnoxious in a subtle way I thoroughly enjoyed the wine.
Walked out with:
Himmelswein - very sweet white
Stone House Red - my favorite of all their wines, red, light and sweet
Dry Vignoles - lightly sweet with fruit and citrus qualities.
There were more wines I enjoyed but these were the stand outs for me. -

If it weren't for their rule about outside food, this would be a 5 star location. I've been a few times with friends and it always ends up being our final stop where we usually spend a few hours.
The only wines I really enjoy are semi-sweet, to really sweet, so their selection of fruit wines is right up my alley. The peach and strawberry tends to be the favorite among the group and goes superbly with cheese and bread of any kind. The prices are fair and the tastings are free!! Huge plus! There's also quite a variety of dry-sweet, so it should satisfy any wine lover.
The view from the patio is gorgeous, so the best is visiting on a beautiful spring or fall day when you can marvel at the rolling hills and beautiful colors of the rural land around you. I tend to feel like I'm not even close to home at this winery, but instead, am on vacation, and that's how it should be!
Work on that outside food, thing, Montelle, and you might be looking at a 5 star review! -

Lovely views of the valley. A very decent Seyval Blanc and a good Chambourcin. I wish we had skipped Sugar Creek and come straight here.

Well, we were instructed to go to another -- purportedly "the best" -- winery, but they had closed up for the day. And so we moseyed over to Montelle instead. The interior felt a bit like a shabby country store. But any disappointment with the look dissipated when we stepped up to the counter and were greeted by a friendly gal who gave us a wine list and proceeded to pour and walk us straight through the 30 or so on offer. Unfortunately, we were in a rush to get to a reception, so we only stayed to sample a small number.
I'm no wine aficionado. So any judgment is to be taken with a grain of salt. But I felt there seemed to be less sophistication among the varietals than what you might find on the west coast. That said, there were several that would have made perfectly enjoyable "patio wines" for easy sipping. Of the two bottles we left with, one was tapped into at an ungodly hour post-wedding-reception, and so unfortunately not savored and remembered; the other was given as an oops-I-forgot-to-bring-a-gift-for-the-hostess item. Just all the more reason for me to make a return trip one day!Listed in: St. Louis, Wineries I've Been To

This is a very good place to go to if you want to spend time at a winery doing more than just getting your free sample on (and they were a stingy with those samples too! Maybe it was because it was crowded that day) The view is amazing outside and the food - nothing spectacular, but good none the less - is great to eat while listening to music and sipping, gulping, inhaling your wine of choice.
As lovely as it was, it didn't set my heart to fluttering so I can say I went and came home with a few bottles. On to the next one...... -

Don't get me wrong, I love day drinking. A Saturday afternoon with the St. Louis wineries let's you do it in style.
Montelle had a great selection of wines to choose from, and summer (preferably not a scorching hot day) is really the best time to go. The food was great given the price-tag (you pay for what you get, the peppercorn turkey wrap I had was delicious).
They have a great wooden patio that overlooks a beautiful valley. It's nice to have some scenery when you're putting back chardonnay like there's no tomorrow. The drive up is also very scenic; definitely a road suited for a convertible.
I also really appreciate the live music on the patio, not to loud to distract you from the winery.
Definitely a must for groups, spend the entire weekend wining and dining while getting out of the city for a bit! -

4 stars for the location, scenery, and accommodating service.
-2 stars for terrible wine and music that is too loud.
I must admit though, it is fun to come here and see drunk 30 somethings make fools of themselves. The midwest is a funny, funny place.. -

It's a pleasant drive to Augusta and when you get to Montelle you will know why it was worth it to get in the car. Gorgeous views, plenty of parking and seating. The main area has pretty decent assortment of snacks, cheeses, hot foods like pizza, cold sandwiches and alternative beverages along with the wine. I think I have found a new summertime winery.

You disappoint me this time, Montelle. This was our last stop on a Saturday wine tour. They closed at 6. We got there a little after 5, and they stopped tastings at 5 and selling bottles to drink on the deck at 5:30!! WTF! If you're going to do that, post it on your hours, and I'll plan accordingly. Big let down...

Montelle used to be my favorite winery in Augusta....the scenic views were the best and the Himmelswein VERY good. However, I stopped going after they stopped allowing outside food to be brought in. If they change this policy, I will change this rating and start going there once again.

Probably the most scenic winery in this area. Have decks atop a hill, and with all the mature trees that surround this place, you feel like you're sitting in a tree house. Live music on certain nights just tops this place off. Upon walking into the main building, you are met with a long bar that offers free wine tasting and loads of wine related knickknacks. The wines here are pretty inexpensive, especially considering how great they all are. Oh and I nearly forgot. They have a mini Starbucks in there! Feeling tired from a long day of winery hopping? Grab a latte! My only minor complaint is the lack of bathrooms. Every visit has found me waiting in a long line, waiting for the bathrooms. There giving people liquor and then making them 'hold it' until the bathroom finally opens. Do they do this on purpose? Just to get a laugh?
