I came here with my family to a sweet 16 bash. Wait, scratch that...bash is not really the appropriate term for a bunch of high school kids pumped up with way too many hormones bumping and grinding in an all too small stage to a remix of Lil Mama's Lip Gloss and a very unfortunate revival of Darude's "Sandstorm" (complete with glow sticks). At least they had a bar...so Montebello is a city I have never ventured out to, but the views from the country club are great - it's a hilly high altitude-ish area.

The golf courses look well kept and the overall venue is not bad. I suspect from the riff raff attending the birthday bash the price to rent out one of the venues is pretty cheap. They also have a club downstairs in the country club area that had a very long line at midnight - why anyone would go to a club at a country club in Montebello beats me but there was one.

We played a scramble tourney with a small number of groups that started a bit late and ended up playing about 10 holes. The golf course was in pretty poor shape, many of the roughs had dirt patches and the fairways were not even in most areas. In addition, the round was more than 3 hours, putting a full 18 at 6+ hours...unacceptable.

The reason I gave this course such a low grade is that a course like this should be pretty easy going, but the starters and club house personnel were like hawks looking for any "mistakes". They have a collared shirt rule (I've seen Tiger wear non collared shirts on the tour, c'mon). And then they kept on hassling us on the course about slow play when we were literally following the groups in front of us with no delay.

A poor course without a fun atmosphere.

Fun course. Played at 12:50pm on Thursday and finished at 5 pm. Signature hole 16 is a great par 3 over a ton of water. Course is in good shape for a public course. Greens were challenging and fairways were good. For 20 bucks, walking twilight, course is good for the buck. Customer service could use a little work. Starter made me wait 20 minutes to go out, although last group went out 40 minutes prior, then let me go as a single. At 18th hole. Marshall told us to hit even though next group was within range. Said if we don't hit, then have to quit. Only have 5 minutes left to play. A couple minutes wouldn't have killed anyone, as still enough light for a 19th hole. Other than the personnel, it's a good place to play.
