I would not have chosen this place otherwise, but I had to do some extensive rehab after knee surgery, and they were local, so ...
Terrific staff. Just wonderful. Very attentive, very upbeat and supportive, and tireless. Emily, Ginny, Kim, Sadie, Evan, Eric (it's a longer list than this). Simon probably hired them just for their professional talents, but everybody here is also engaging, good-humored, friendly, and eager to support you through the rigors of physical recovery.
I've learned that rehab is not for the faint of heart, but these folks make a painful process a lot more tolerable than I had any reason to expect. Five stars. -

I've been coming here for the past two weeks for physical therapy & I love this place. The scenery is nice and the people who work and work out there are very pleasant. Positive energy every time I come in.
It's small & cozy Also, not too expensive.
My therapists are all really really cool
The owner creeps me out a little though. He's a sweet guy just a little perv-ish lol -

Awesome place even for "seniors" like myself. Have helped me keep my

Really happy to be treated here. My therapist is aggressive with my treatment and tells me she won't accept anything less than full recovery, which I appreciate. She pushes, but not farther than my body is willing to go. I'm improving noticibly every week. PT assistants are really good, too, and everyone remembers my name even though I'm only in there 30 mins once a week. Plus, the owner brings everyone coffee from a one of the independent coffee places nearby. What great service!

Ok. i came to this gym when a family member joined, after she had great physical therapy. It is super convenient, AND on my way home from work, which is important to a procrastinating slacker like me. And I got a nice discount for joining with a family member. The staff are great. Simon is amazing..a gift to the bay area. The equipment is hydraulic, which really helps me with the workout. Amanda was a fantastic personal trainer. The place is very clean, the women's rest room is spa like
But, there are no real classes, no yoga or zumba or whatever. I realize this is a plus for some of you... but not for me.
And, if you ever need physical therapy, it is a 5 star awesome experience. -

*1st off I am totally bummed* I actually (thought) I sent / saved my 1st attempted review *a few months ago :( but I just noticed that it was not posted?
Regardless, TAKE 2 = Simon & Ginny have seriously SAVED me!
I had major rotator cuff surgery end of January 2010 ~ I had no idea what the recovery process would be like nor did I have any clue how much pain this surgery would cause?!
OMG ~ not sure if you heard me O-M-G ~ I was soo out of it (drugged and in sooo much pain) when I stumbled in with my 'frozen arm' & glazed drugged up eyes. Simon (owner & PT) greeted me and from the start was tough on me & I say "tough" I mean that in the most "positive way"~ I appreciated his direct (tell it like it is) approach ~ his goal is to see you get better ~ he has amazing motivating energy. Simon knows all of his clients (not just his personal PT patients but all the patients) by name and speaks to everyone with sincerity! I was in really bad shape my first few weeks (in tears) and I really needed some serious TLC and feel so blessed that I found Montclair Physical Therapy.
OK ~ there really is NOT enough words that I can say to express my absolute respect that I have for Ginny (PT) she is an absolute ANGEL! Seriously, no joke she is an ANGEL! She is sooo focused, compassionate, and extremely supportive with you (the patient & all the assistant aides in the office). She recently earned her doctorate degree, she is intuitive and thoughtful regarding all her patients injuries ~ she truly is a healer. I trust Ginny with everything regarding my recovery!
This is a "wellness center" truly ~ all of the employees' goals are to see their patients returning back to good health.
My shoulder recovery takes work (from me) & I think some patients assume that by just going to PT that the physical therapist will "cure" you ~ it is a partnership! After having surgery or even recovering from an injury ~ we all (the patient) should 1st really reflect on the current condition of our body *prior to setting that 1st appointment (physically & mentally) which has nothing to do with the PT office *1st examine your own diet, exercise level, stress, sleep conditions, (the list can go on and on) all of which we (patients) bring into our appointments regardless of our injury!
Thank you Simon and Ginny * I've got some serious LOVE for ya'll!
I highly recommend... -

I heart Simon. I may be biased, because he's a Kiwi (and my mom's a Kiwi; it makes you feel warm and fuzzy when your PT has the same accent as your momma).
It seems like the negative reviews here are based on volume/inattention. Okay, MPT is awesome. Everyone loves them. Which means sometimes they have bad, overbooked days. It happens. Cut them some slack, and try to book early in the morning on a weekday that's not one of their busy ones. I seem to remember Tuesdays and Thursdays were good.
Because it's worth it. Simon and and all the therapists are funny, engaging, and professional. They got my knee back in shape, and if I could afford it, I'd still be going to the gym there, just to hang out with them. He's the kind of guy that not only remembers your name even if he hasn't seen you for months (and I'm sure he's like that with hundreds of his patients), but remembers to mock you mercilessly for spelling it wrong. -

I have been a member of the gym here for a couple of years. I love it. It is a great neighborhood place dedicated to the community members it serves.
Simon has assembled a talented staff to help people recover from trauma in addition to getting and staying in shape.
Over the years, he has grown his business from a small physical therapy location to a decked out pilates studio, workout room and physical therapy recovery destination.
Simon and his team are dedicated to helping people of all ages and all shapes achieve their goals. Just ask for some advice and you will get helpful tips and professional instruction.
Last year, I implemented a program at work where everyone on our team gets a company match for their monthly workout fees here. They pay half and the company pays half. I figure this is a good way to support our team... and to help each of us stay healthy.
And every time I go to the gym here, I feel there is a team of professionals here to support me and to help me reach my goals. The facility is very clean and the machines are maintained well.
I am so happy that there is a place like this in Montclair. Thank you Simon ... you and your team do a great job. ^..^Listed in: My Neighborhood

Come here for transcendence.
Started out doing Physical Therapy with Carrie for a torn ACL and eventually took advantage of the gym too. All the facilities still have that new equipment smell and yet the staff seems like they've been there and working together for a hundred thousand years! This "gym" creates an experience of strengthening of the "whole self". Their PT team is truly practicing at the forefront of physical rehabilitation methods. 1. They do a ton of massage. 2. They work WITH you on developing a plan of recovery. Being looked in the eye and asked about my knee was worth a million bucks, but instead of charging an arm and a leg (ahem ahem, like other places) they offered me affordable personal care that you JUST DON'T FIND anywhere else.
I love coming here. If I lived in the area, I would be here everyday. Until then, I will AC trans-it from Alameda, and it will be worth it every time!
PS the ladies locker room has a sauna that is pimp! All facilities are wheelchair accessible and crutches friendly (though you can't say the same for the actual neighborhood as it is literally in the hills) -

I first went to Montclair Physical Therapy after I had been hit by a car while on my bike. Already, I was very fortunate to be in one piece, but was even more fortunate that my medical group's orthopedist happened to recommend Montclair Physical Therapy... They were AMAZING! I went from not being able to sit for more than 5 minutes to feeling very strong and active again. They were personable, professional and even more importantly, genuinely cared about my well-being and didn't make me feel like a cog in the medical wheel.
Now, they even have a whole gym and Pilates -- I only took one Pilates class (not my thing, but the instructors were great, not to mention cute), and have definitely gone for their strengthening seminars (some of them are even FREE!) and use the gym on the weekends.
All in all, over the years, they have grown but never lost their ability to make everyone who walks in the door feel special. And everyone in the Montclair and Piedmont areas (keepin it real in 94611) who go to Montclair Village know these men and women -- always a smile and a wave. I would still happily recommend Montclair Physical Therapy and Wellness to anyone who asked.Listed in: My Neighborhood

I am so happy that I had a chance to work with Simon Gibson at Montclair Physical Therapy. Actually I would also recommend Kris, another PT at the practice, who helped me with some back strengthening suggestions a few years ago. But I adore Simon.
Reasons:
1) Simon listens, feels, looks and gets to the root of the matter. Then he fixes it. With me it was a foot. I saw (and talked to) a lot of people with knees there, too, and shoulders, and backs. So while my recommendation is based on my foot, I would go back in a heartbeat for anything else.
2) They have a busy, cheerful, friendly practice that is tied in with the gym so there is a lot of equipment available for therapy-related exercises.
3) Simon's a New Zealander with a wry & dry sense of humor. I love having something to laugh about when I'm doing something boring like sitting with ice & stim on my foot.
4) Efficient administrative crowd. Scheduling, insurance, payments, etc. are straightforward and done right.
5) They have early hours (like 7am) which means you can be in and out and make it to work.
I had tried many other things to solve a persistent inflammation and pain in the foot, and in a matter of weeks I was well on my way with Simon & the gang at Montclair PT. I'm VERY glad my foot doctor recommended them, my insurance covered them and best of all - my foot got better under their care. Woo-hoo Simon & gang! -

The five stars go to Ginny and Daniel, they are a great team and they care about my Physical Therapy and overall well-being. Since this is why I am going there...5 stars! I am grateful that I was able to do my PT here. They are efficient, communication is clear and concise and helpful in ways that go beyond the call of duty. They note my pain level and walk me through steps and ideas for pain management and mobility. They listen when I have questions and I have never felt harried or like I was not a top priority with them....even when they are busy and multi-tasking.
I note the one bad review speaks to the one area of the place that is lacking: front desk help. I agree that this area needs some work.
As a first timer, there was some confusion on my part and a lack of clear communication on the front desk woman's part: that is, what to do, where to go, who was I looking for as my PT person, how long should I expect to wait etc. On subsequent visits I noted that again, this point is the weak spot....if they would just rearrange things and have someone assigned to the area (that has customer service skills) the place would be 5 stars plus. A little energy and making the customer feel welcomed would make it a warm and fuzzy (vs a fuzzy~) situation.
As in any situation, I feel a rating of a business should be on what you are there for...and the fact that we all need to be our own advocates and hence speak-up when things are not clear or places/people are not meeting our expectations...so I stand by 5 stars. -

Simon, Monica, and the team do a marvelous job with the added plus of being very friendly. My comment only refers to the physical therapy, but MPT&W seems like a fantastic neighborhood gym.
From a PT-perspective, they do a great job of diagnosing one's issue and devising a plan for recovery, which continually adjusts based upon progress. They listen, answer questions, and provide a plan that involves both therapy at the gym and stretches/exercises to be conducted at home/work.
I arrived with injured back and w/in two weeks, my PT is complete. I'm exceptionally pleased with my progress and treatment, and I am confident with my long-term plan to ensure my back issues do not recur.
Unequivocal 5-star recommendation. -

Love them! Always easy parking, positive and energetic staff, welcoming environment for people of all ages, genders, and races. I feel like I'm healing, that I was really listened to, and they help give me the confidence that I will recover. I am accepted for how much I can do. I get so much value each appointment. I would recommend them to anyone!

The only good thing I have to say about this place is that the receptionist is very nice.
I found the physical therapy offered to be a joke. First of all, everyone is expected to be in one big room. There is no privacy whatsoever. That is fine if you are into communal events, however the phys. therapist actually talked to the other clients and workers while she "worked" on me.
The actual therapy I was given was brief and provided zero relief for my neck and back problem. I have had several years of body work, so I did have something to compare this care to. I finally left to seek care that was more appropriate and client centered. -

I cannot say enough good things about Montclair Physical Therapy and Wellness. I have been there twice for PT and have since joined the gym, used one of their personal trainers, and tried out the Pilates and the Rolfer associated with the establishment. All are wonderfully effective at what they do, and I commend Simon for assembling such a great team.
The Physical Therapists and PT assistants do an amazing job of getting people back to moving the way they want to be moving, using all the latest techniques and technology.
One the things I love about this place is the way Simon works to build a sense of community, always making sure to introduce people to one another when he has the opportunity (which is often!). This is the friendliest gym I have ever belonged to.
The facility is clean, well-equipped and well lit. They also have clorox wipes available around the gym equipment so you can sanitize after you use the machines (or before, I guess depending on your preference).
Mark, who is the main person keeping things running after usual business hours, is great: very helpful and friendly!
Oh and they validate for up to two hours at the parking garage, which is an amazing perk that makes it easy to keep coming in. -

This gym has become a total joke there are no rules, about cell phones and about members coming in and changing the channels while you are watching a program the A/C hasn't worked in over 6 mos. gym is dirty with dirt under treadmills. Mens bathroom not everything works and things are broken. People who spend money on a membership please don't think this place will be here much longer hopefully you can get a refund or stop payment. Our advice is to find another gym that has more to offer and less hassle and rudeness.

AMAZING! Not sure if you heard me...this place is AMAZING! I had rotator cuff surgery Jan. 26th 2010 ~ ouch...pretty bad never would have thought this surgery would be so painful! About a week after the procedure...I apparently had something similar to what is called "frozen arm" and was told to begin my physical therapy right away from my doctor. I think my father might have just drove me there same day right after we had left the surgeon (w/out an appointment) since I was in soo much pain ;( Simon met with me and evaluated my status and we started right away (that same day) *everyone in the facility is soo warm and friendly! I am very very thankful!
*Ginny has been my angel throughout this entire recovery....she is very very knowledgeable and extremely caring! She is truly a healer!
Thank you Montclair Physical Therapy for your passion and dedication to all of your patients!
I highly recommend Montclair PT **Simon and Ginny are AMAZING!
XO much love to you all :)

I almost don't want to tell folks about this gem of a gym! It is my favorite place to workout, catch up with my neighbors, get a little PT and then chill in the sauna. A lot is packed into this little gym: a terrific Pilates studio, several pieces of aerobic equipment, a variety of strength training equipment of the resistance and free weight variety, and a generosity of spirit, as exemplified by Simon Gibson, who runs the joint. And the PT staff is marvelous, all about getting you better so you can get on with your life. The entire gym is populated by knowledgeable, responsible people who seem to enjoy what they do enormously. Great asset to Montclair Village!

This place is ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!! I'm new to Oakland, and my MD Internist (Dr. Kimberly Hicks) recommended this place to deal with the constant pain in my arm resulting from a pinched neck nerve. From the moment I first arrived (in considerable pain!), Chris was absolutely magical in reading my medical diagnosis, then immediately beginning treatments of massage, focused exercise, cold packs, and other treatments. Chris assigned me exercise homework to do every day. And, guess what - I started gradually feeling better and better, resulting in no more pain after 2 months! I'm back to NORMAL (well, some may debate that!). But I am absolutely grateful, awed, and forever in debt to Ms. Chris and the whole team (Simon, Michelle, etc.) at Montclair PT.

I had a total knee replacement 6 1/2 weeks ago. When it came time to choose where I would get my physical therapy, I discovered that Montclair Physical Therapy was a very convenient short bus ride from my home. I just hoped that I would feel enough confidence in the staff there to trust them with my rehab. I was thrilled to discover, on my first visit, that my PT, Ginny, is very knowledgeable about knee replacements and worked really well with me. Daniel was so helpful with my exercise regime and works closely with Ginny. And everyone there is so friendly and helpful. If I am approaching a machine tentatively, someone appears immediately to help, whether they are working with me or not. I feel so incredibly lucky to have found this place. I definitely recommend them for any type of PT.

I have been taking Pilates from Beth who is absolutely wonderful and the back pain that I'd had for years has subsided. She is a gentle soul and I can recommend her highly! Also, everyone is super friendly and Simon, the owner, offers great deals if you want to use the Pilates or workout equipment on your own!

This is a wonderful gym. I come 5 times a week to work out and it is always clean, well maintained and full of friendly people. The staff is enthusiastic and you can work out on your own, with a trainer or take classes like Pilates. The hours are convenient and while there are always people working out, it is very rare to have to wait for the machine of my choice. Plus there is a full locker room with showers and clean, fluffy towels! Check it out.
I have also come for physical therapy and massage. All top notch! -

Studio City, CA
I'm not trying to be cruel or act out a vendetta against this place, but thought I would share a counterpoint for the larger Yelp community. I only had two visits, and have decided to look elsewhere for the rest of my physical therapy. Perhaps I didn't give it enough of a chance, but on my second visit the place was way overbooked. I sat where they asked me to, and then waited for 15 minutes past the start of my appointment, until the owner noticed and commanded that someone attend to me. My therapist was too busy with another patient, so my entire session was at the hands of one assistant or another, with only cursory face time with my PT. The main assistant didn't stay with me through PT--just got me started and then darted away. He didn't check my form or my relative degree of pain. What's more--even though they got to me 15 minutes late, they stopped right on a dime at the hour. I didn't complain...but I felt like I'd been taken for granted. Essentially, there's no one mean-spirited in the whole place, and they really try to give off good vibes, but it seems poorly managed.
My two cents... -

I was referred to MPT by my doctor and am thrilled to have found it. Ginny, Daniel and Eric have been an amazing help to me. They are personable, treat each client as if he/she was their only client and Simon, who has never worked with me directly, knows my name, why I am there, and if I haven't been there for a few weeks, notices that. The provision for PT patients to come in to the gym in between appointments and do their exercises, free of charge, helped to keep me on track with my rehab. and I wound up joining the gym once my PT prescription ran out so I could continue to be in such a supportive and healing envrionment.

We joined the gym at Montclair Physical Therapy when we moved to Montclair last year. We were initially dubious, wondering whether this physical therapy business would be able to serve our gym needs, and whether the crowds would keep us off of our favorite treadmills, but we couldn't be happier. Equipment is almost always available, the locker rooms are spotless and functional, and the level of personal service is amazing. Mark, in particular, is always looking for a way to help, whether it's finding your TV station, turning on the sauna, or asking if he can come in half an hour earlier in the morning to accommodate your schedule.

I've been a member of the "gym" part of MPTW for about 3 months now and I love it. Super convenient to our house so it motivates me to go more often than I would if I had to drive to another gym. Mark always is willing to help and offers a nice friendly face when you enter. All of the staffers there are great, truly. I have not experienced the pilates classes or PT yet but I may need to try the pilates classes. Usually not too crowded and you can get on the machines you want to use easily. Wish I had joined earlier!

Simon and the gang at Montclair PT are terrific people! They not only provided the guidance and assistance I needed to heal my foot, they provided encouragement I needed as I worked to get back to 100%. Everyone there is very friendly, approachable and concerned about their patients' and members' well-being. I highly recommend Montclair PT to anyone recuperating from any injury or looking to increase their level of fitness. Hopefully I won't be injured again but if I am, my first call will be to Simon.

This Place has some very GREAT web-page the pictures and the information is good....and the ratings here on yelp are good too. I actually picked this center using yelp. BUT I am soooooooo disappointed with this place. They are unprofessional, and rude SPECIALLY....SIMON GIBSON the "Founde/Physical Therapist" he is the RUDEST person I have ever encountered. Not only was he rude but he down talked to me and treated my like a child, and the tone of arrgance was even more insulting. I am so offended, at my age no one and I mean NO ONE should be talking to me the way he did or questing my intellegence like he said he did????? In my opinion "WHAT A LOSER!!!! A JERK!!!! AND AN AWFULL BUSINESS OWNER!!!!! OHHHH......and forget the customer service he gives.....THE WORST I HAVE EVER HAD.....I am trully sorry that I could not share the great service that some have received......I will NEVER go to this place again and WOULD NOT.....NOT.... recommened this place to ANYONE who likes to be treated with respect, or any consumer for that matter. THANKS FOR NOTHING ...MONTCLAIN PHYSICAL THERAPY!!!!!! YOU SUCK!

I can't say enough about Montclair Physical Therapy and Wellness. It's a physical therapy place, a gym, a pilates studio. And everything about it is nurturing, caring, nonjudgmental and positive. My husband and I do cardio there regularly, and there are always people to help us with any questions or special needs. I've been taking private pilates/movement sessions with Beth and Liz and it has frankly changed my life. I'm in my mid-50s and have never been in better shape. They deal with every possible physical limitation, and work with you based on who and where you are in terms of physical and emotional needs. Compassion is the rule, but intelligence about the human body is the best I've seen anywhere. Kathleen and Amanda are also first rate. Do not hesitate to make appointments with them or to take one of the classes. I cannot say enough. These people don't just go through the motions, they really know what they're doing. I'm very grateful for all I've been given at this place.
