Pure bagel awesomeness - though I still think that Absolute's may be better. But this was a fantastic introduction for my wife to the wonders of the New York Bagel (as a Canadian who had never previously ventured to the Mid-Atlantic, she had only previously experienced Montreal and Montreal-style bagels).
The bagels are fluffy and doughy, but not quite as dense as other New York Bagels. And unlike the faux New York bagel chains on the West Coast of the U.S., they actually boil and then bake the bagels.
They offer about 15 bagel varieties, none of which would be considered sacreligious, plus a variety of schmears. And they very nicely served a plain bagel with peanut butter for my wife (her preferred bagel eating method).
In addition to the schmears and peanut butter, they also serve up a number of different sandwich options (all of which cost about $7).
The bagels are good, but if you are a true New Yorker these can not be the best bagels you have ever had. What brings it all together here is all the options you have for bagels and sandwiches of any and all kinds, it makes the thought of the complete bagel experience better. The issue for me with the bagels is that they are very doughy and a little too large, but they taste great. I just can't stamp these as the best bagels in NY, but I will go here all the time.
It is a small place and when you walk in you will see the line coming at you to pay. You stay to the left and go straight to the back to order. After seeing the 1,000 sandwich options you make your order and immediately move into the line to pay. They will deliver your grub to the register where you will pay. Follow the system and don't try to disrupt it.
They have all schmear options for bagels and a number of interesting named sandwiches, as well as homemade cookies and treats, all crammed into a pretty tiny space. The bagel artists are totally friendly and take all requests, including my dreaded nightmare: "Can you scoop out the bagel?" Illegal! This should be illegal. Stop asking to scoop the inside of the bagel out, this is sacrilege.
Go here, enjoy a good bagel, follow the system and you will be fine.
Hot damn Hot Bagels! This place is awesome! I am about to make a very earth shattering and bold statement, but I honest to God think that this place has the best bagels in New York! Which obviously means that yes, this place has the best damn bagels in the entire universe!
Everything bagel toasted with cream cheese. Heaven in your mouth.
Did I mention? Such a good deal! I had juice, coffee and bagel for $5. And to think I'd pay $40 for that bagel.
Disclaimer: Customers of Montague Street Bagels have been known to experience life shattering euphoria at the first bite of one of their hand rolled bagels.
Soooooo amaaaaaaaazing!!!!! Came here after a coughcough long night in Brooklyn. Absolute perfection. Everyone there is also an aboslute joy, which really helps especially if you're having a uh, spot of a headache. It's everything you need all in one. Mmmm
Bagels are amazing but what I love even more are their sandwiches! I highly recommend the pope of montague which is turkey and cheese with gravy. They have a bunch of excellent combination with cool names posted at the counter. You can order custom sandwiches, my favorite being chicken cutlet with lettuce, tomato, onions and bagels on a toasted roll.
I do recall eating a very divine sandwich here last year around 3 am so this place is really great for anytime of the day.
One morning I woke up hungover and in desperate need of an egg and cheese sandwich. I had the most inordinately difficult time finding a place that would serve me one after noon. Hello people, this is New York City, since when is anything ever unavailable because of the time of day?
Since I had to go to J&R anyway, I spent a while wandering around the financial district to no avail. Until suddenly I had an epiphany and realized that what I needed had been right under my nose the whole time. Of course: Hot Bagels! I jumped right on the train. Back in the Heights I made a beeline for HoBags. I was almost there when, right in front of Radio Shack, a frazzled hippy woman said loudly, "Do you have just a moment to spare for clean energy?" I reacted the way I usually do to such entreaties: a muted 'No' and an almost imperceptible headshake. As I hurried by, she threw up her hands in exasperation, like she was dealing with a petulant child, and said forcefully "You have a nice day." There was a certain acidity to her tone that I did not appreciate.
Lady, you don't understand.
I am on a mission here.
(I should have said to her).
You have no idea of the trials I have been through to find a simple egg and cheese sandwich to feed to my hangover. It's crying out for melted cheese and egg smooshed together between a limp roll. You wanna talk about clean energy? So do I. I wanna talk about eggs. They're good clean energy for me. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go get some clean energy so I can fuel a long day of sitting on my ass in front of the television.
You have a nice day.
Yeah so...HoBags is the best. Always there for me in my time of need. Everyone needs a reliable 24hr foodsource.
THESE ARE THE GREATEST BAGELS IN THE WHOLE WORLD. End of sentence. And yes, I have tried bagels all over the world. So don't fight me on this one.
24 hours, hand rolled. Nice and hot in the early morning. But scrumptious any time of the day. Any bagel there is great, but my faves are the salt and egg. The cream cheeses are standard but when pared with a Montague Hot Bagel, it rocks. Their egg sandwiches (on kaiser rolls!!) are great - but make sure you ask for it buttered because that makes them killer.
I'm crying now....I miss my bagels....
Stopped in here after a walk along the promenade, so it was in the afternoon. Got a bagel with tuna salad. The bagel was still pretty fresh and the tuna was not old looking like most places have it after a while. It was all a great meal on the go and I was happy. The end.
Yes! They Make 'em here!
Grew up in the nab., having them often!
Not only are their bagels the best, they also make great Kaiser rolls, and unless they run out - fresh Bialy's too! Don't miss 'em!
If you get something really simple like a buttered or cream cheese bagel/roll,.. You really get a great deal for your money.
But of course if you get a sandwich - or other "fancier" fillings for your bagel etc. i.e.- a lettuce/tomato/egg/cheese/ham etc. - it can run you around $6 - 8+ dollars.
Oh yeah, watch out for the stuff in the platters (wings / ziti, etc) deli case. You do not want to eat that stuff!
If you're lucky and drop in when they bring out a fresh batch of bagels - Wow! * Yum!
Just Heaven! =)
aka Hot Bag (because their neon sign tends to be blown out in amusing ways) must be one of the best bagel places in NYC. You basically can't go wrong, but one of my best experiences with them was when friends and I stopped in for a post partying snack early one fall morning. I got a pumpernickel bagel, toasted, with butter.
One of the sole reasons I miss living in Brooklyn Heights is the Montague Street Bagels. The staff knew me by name as I'd stroll in all hours of the day: drunk, hung over, blacked out, and at very rare moments sober.
Great variety of sandwiches and wraps, and the sun-dried tomato bagels with cream cheese are to die for....I am tempted to jump on a Brooklyn bound train now!
When I first met my girlfriend, she was living in Brooklyn Heights and each weekend we would celebrate our new -found love with Bagels from Montague Street. But, just so you don't think I'm looking at these Bagels with rose-colored glasses, 5 years later I still stop there (sometimes for no reason, sometimes when I'm in trouble). But, if I go here just for me, I keep that secret between me and Montague Street.
Bagels are nice and big. They are always doughy and warm. These bagels also make a great breakfast sandwich with say...2 eggs, bacon and mozzarella.
This is my favorite bagel in NYC. They are big, the outside is not too soft, not too hard. The inside is super soft and sweet. When I come back to NYC, this is something my mother has already picked up for me and is sitting in the house. The well done poppy-seed bagel is the best. It is depressing that so few places outside of NY serve poppy bagels. It is my neighborhood place, and so connected to my memories, but whatever it is, I always leave NY with at least a few of their bagels tucked into my suitcase.
they have fed me many times on my return from 4am drunken nights out in the city.
plain bagel, toasted with butter for 4am. and lunchbox special for lunch for 6 bucks with cracked pepper turkey bagel and soda and chips. mmmm.
if you're lucky enough, you might even catch bk heights a-lister paul giamatti wolfing one down.
Sorry I had high expectations due to these dang yelp reviews. The bagel wasn't bad, but it wasn't hot like I'd hoped (I was in around 11am, btw). In general, the rule of thumb in NY I hear is not to toast your bagels, so I didn't.. but I probably should have.
As a plus, the scallion cream cheese was delicious and the bagels are cheap. Hopefully I'll get a chance to give them a second chance before I leave Brooklyn.
The first time I ate a Montague Street bagel, my expectations were low. The line stretched out the door, and as I waited to order in the tiny space, I watched as a toddler took his tongue and licked (that's right -- LICKED) the chrome (from top to bottom, mind you) on the shop's glass display case. Said toddler's mother, amazingly, was oblivious; I was horrified; and my stomach did flips that I was sure even a well-toasted everything bagel couldn't cure.
Five minutes later, though, I'd long forgotten about Brooklyn's most germ-ridden kid. The Montague Street bagels are hearty (meaning: HUGE) and fresh, with a just-tough-enough outer crust and a chewy middle that pairs perfectly with a schmear or three of cream cheese.
My suggestion? Go with pumpernickel. Order lox. Buy a cinnamon raisin for an afternoon snack. Don't worry about the wait -- It's worth it.
Oh, and please, keep your tongue to yourself.
The best bagels in all of NY...my college experience probably wouldn't have been half as good without this place!
The perfect combination...the Amanda Special if you will...is the cinnamon raisin bagel, toasted with butter and an Arizona Green Tea to be consumed only between the hours of 1am and 7am. Absolute heaven!
There is always a line outside this place on saturday and sunday morning...all of bklyn heights come out to enjoy the yummy breakfast sandwiches, spreads and bagels, mmmm!!
It's open 24/7 and the people that work there are awesome!
Seriously, I don't know how they manage to get their bagels JUST right every single time, but they do. Even if you drop in at 4 a.m...a time when most other bagels are stale and hard, they're heavenly. My personal favorite is the Whole Wheat and Sesame bagel with butter.
They also make AMAZING sandwiches and salads. Try the buffalo chicken with lettuce and tomato on a sesame seed bagel..SO good.
The wait can be annoying on a weekday during lunchtime or on a Sunday afternoon, but it's worth it.
Good Bagels! i love coming here on Sundays and getting an everything bagel with scallion tofu spread and tomato or an everything flagel with butter.
it was worth the walk at 4am.
getting a whole wheat everything bagel toasted with butter hit the spot.
it was fresh too b/c ya know they were getting ready for sunday morning.
oh, wow.
this place was my introduction to new york bagels and I honestly can't imagine anything more sublime. not to mention that it's 24 HOURS. incredibly dangerous -- yes, I have made cabs stop at 3 am before taking me home -- but so, so right.
Not fancy. Don't get your expectations up. It's dirt cheap, 24 hours, great bagels. If you want em hot out the oven try them on the way home from the bars in the (not so) wee hours. Or, if you're old, get up early. Plus, the egg bagel? Oh yeah.
great bagels; the french toast bagels are delicious, and everything is fresh, quick and cheap. haven't had anything but bagels from here, but why would you when the bagels are so good???
