a bit of mixed feelings about this event but here i go.
this was my first time at monster massive and also my first so-cal rave. i expected HUGENESS and boy i sure got it. there was such a process, the whole thing was a bit messy. everyone was kinda chillin in front.. talkin'.. you didn't know where the actual line was. so you walk some distance and you reach the actual line. but, it wasn't a line! it was a MOSH PIT of pissed off, drugged up, (some) dirty people in costumes all pushing and shoving to get to the front of the line. mind you, the front of the line was unquestionably out of sight.
2 hours later, after a LOT (and i mean a lot) of shoving, fence breaking, fence tossing, fence hopping, etc., my friends and i reach the front of the line where they finally let us in. geez. i tried putting the whole line situation aside and focus on the actual event itself, but it's kinda hard considering it took myself 2 hours to get through. there was NO organization whatsoever.. they shoulda had guards at points throughout the line keeping everyone in check. but no, everyone was just moshing and shoving and breaking down the fences. ghettoooo.
it was pretty chilly, so i don't know why the main stage was outdoors in an oily parking lot. the lights were pretty though, and there were flamethrower things that kept me warm. there was just tooooo many people everywhere.. even for an outdoor event. they went a lil overboard this time i think with the capacity. i look forward to another so-cal event to get a better feeling of massives... i'll keep you all posted!
armin van buuren was sick though. i think that's why i gave this review 4 stars. lol.
I went to Monster Massive for the first time this year, and although I love the music, I couldn't give it more than 3 stars.
The reasons:
1. Let's start with the tickets.... way too pricey. $50 is bad enough, but what's the deal with paying $60, $70 or even $80 during the last days before the event? I would understand the prices if there was seating arrangements and the like. But no, this is an outdoor area, where the stoner who paid $50 stands in the same area as the stoner who paid $70. Absolutely NO difference... you will buy the same expensive crappy domestic beer, take a dump in the same horrible porter potty, etc.
2. Parking and traffic.
Traffic on both street and freeway was horrible. And if you don't mind paying an extra $20-50 for parking, this is the place for you.
Me, boyfriend, and friends decided to leave the car at my boyfriend's job (which is about 10 mins from the arena) and from there took a taxi. We got there around 8:30, almost an hour stuck in traffic.
3. Waiting in line...
This was the most hated moment of monster massive. I couldn't believe that the wait in line was over 2 hours! What the hell?!?!?
We did not pay over $50 to stand in a long and crowded line with hundreds of angry people, where the rails were being removed and thrown over your head. Everything was a mess. Security was not letting people in. Everything was so unorganized... simply put, what a piece of Sh*t.
3. Overpriced water, food, beer.
I was there for 6 hours and did not bother to buy anything due to the prices. $ 5 for water, $10 for domestic beer. You would think the drinks contained LSD. If you have to, buy one water bottle per person and try to save as long as possible. Trust me, you don't want to use the portable toilets. Which brings me to #4...
4. Portable toilets.... HELL NO
Putrid smell, poop stains on the walls and over toilet. This is a crackhead's wish come true.
5. Too crowded
Make sure everyone in your group has a cellphone, because you will lose someone. Wear anything that will make you stand out (to your friends) so that you don't lose each other walking through the large crowds of stoners who don't like to make room for those who want to escape their smelly stench of sweat and ass.
The music is however great, which why I will most likely attend another monster massive. However, it's in need of improvement.
I've been to Monster Massive many times in the past and I'll be going again this year. Why? I really don't know. Maybe I'm getting old but this kinda shit just doesn't interest me anymore. I remember going to one TEN years ago! Back when I actually enjoyed raves. Now it's like a chore to me...
Anyways I'll give you the rundown on what to expect. Theres going to be traffic going there. Parkings going to be a bitch. You should get high or drunk in the parking lot. Don't forget your cell phone...you will definitely be needing it later. You're going to get checked at the door so hide your drugs. Once you're in...IT'LL BE PACKED! You will get lost easily. If you're over 21, get a bracelet so you can buy booze. Drinks are over-priced. No matter how hard you try not to, you will lose your friends and spend the entire night looking for them. That's why I said don't forget your cell phone. Bathrooms are horrible! If you have to poop...don't.
There are PLENTY of hot chicks here! Some are even topless! If you're lucky you might get to suck face with a hottie! Ladies, watch out for ass and boob grabbers. One year, some dude got stabbed! Just be careful and be aware of your surroundings. I strongly recommend leaving about an hour before it ends...getting out of the parking lot is more of a bitch then getting in. If you haven't found your friends by the time it ends...too bad, they close the gates on everyone!
Monster Massive 2009 = no organization what-so-ever!!!! I went the previous year so I know they lines could have been set up a lot better but I don't know what the hell they were thinking this year!? People were practically getting trampled left and right!!! I know raves are supposed to be packed but getting around here was just frustrating and totally ruined your mood. This was my second monster massive and I think it will be my last.
I went before it was fun just a lot of F***** up people around u bobbling their heads to music which they obviously cant hear...dont get me wrong i had a great time just isnt my scene i feel as if people just find excuses to get hammered but why not do it in a safe environment like at a house party or w family members, COMMON RULE: If you cant do it in front of your mom it must be wrong! But nothing beats house music!!! this year its on Halloween loll watch out!!!!
TFR
man, it was hella disappointing! i've got lot to gripe about this one, so here goes the rant:
1. ORGANIZATION! non existent! wtf, beef up security, you idiots. the line getting in was just stupid. zig zagging turned into hopping gates. at one point, the rowdy crowd pushed the fence down trying to hop over, but only to see another fence, with spikes. FAILED. and then at another point, people picked up the gates and started passing it backwards and pushing in. i swore if that continued, someone would've trampled and died. a girl near us freaked out, i guess she's claustrophobic (as am i but i could just bully people around me to back the fuck off) she started hyperventilating and crying hysterically. had someone died, Monster, you would've been shut down. and for what, so you can save few bucks on lack of security?
it took us nearly an hour and we were hopping like it was the border. some people took 2 hours. shitty. step your game up!
2. the Line-up. man, that shit was booooooty compared to HARD. but we got burned at HARD SUMMER so we gave Monster a shot since it was at a good venue (more on this later, idk how they could possibly fuck up a venue like this) but man, really tho, I just wanted to see Crystal Castles... they were on for like 30min, no joke! wtf! still great to see them nontheless. but homygod, the line to go down to the floor was ridiculous. and there was no reason to be, cuz the arena floor wasn't that packed. so we went out to the main stage for Armin... wtf, he was wack too. there is always one song that sticks out. at Monster, none.
3. i don't know how you fuck up a good open space venue like the Sports Arena/Exposition park, but Monster somehow found a way to fuck it up. TAO set up was perfect. wtf, bleachers at the back of the main stage? for real? that just narrowed the intersection of arena/jungle/main
4. dance scene. where were they?! no one dance anymore?! walked around looking for circles, found none! literately. my friends and i were disappointed. we can only dance with each other for so long... and it's not like we already don't do enough of that. geeez. and stop shuffling, fags!
if it weren't for a big group of us hanging out and enjoying each other's company, it would've been a huge let down. hype was built up and deflated. we could've done what we did at Monster back home... and we did. better than Monster.
Only in LA would you find competing massive raves/electronic music festivals on the same night. God bless this city. Monster Massive is coming to LA Halloween night (and happening only a few miles from the second night of the HARD Haunted Mansion) and has brought four stages, Armin Van Buuren (arguably the "biggest" DJ on the planet), and a throng of strung out teens. Did I mention how much I love this city?
Lame....it's for lame asses trying to get fucked up and lose their friends. Save your money and go to a badass house party instead. The dj's are pretty high end but thats why Monster Massive costs so much..to fly, feed, house, and pay all those international dj's....monster massive is just so 10 years ago....p.s. how many 14 year old neglected sluts will you see puking their face off?
Went to Monster Massive last night & I have mixed feelings about this event. Loved the theme, the biggest party on Halloween night, with kick ass DJ's keeping my feet dancing. Also everyone dressed up from ghouls to Lil Red Riding Hood & unlimited Vodka drinks & Asahi beer, (we did VIP). Sounds like one hell of a good time, but the organization was so off!! Since we did VIP not only did we get free alcohol, we got backstage VIP areas at all stages.Found 2 out of the 3 VIP entries, but couldn't find the main stage VIP entry, WTF! We asked multiple people in "Event Staffer" yellow jackets, nobody knew where it was. We walked into the main arena, we could see the VIP down low, but couldn't figure out how to get there. So we decided to hit another VIP lounge to get drinks then go back to arena. So we go back to arena at 12:30am to see first act we wanted to see, now the arena is closed due to full capacity. Basically I missed 2 of the main acts I wanted to see, Crystal Castles & Felix Da Housecat, due to the unhelpful staff. Other than the fact that the people who directed this event need to get with the program & train their rented staff & they need to have more signs up showing which band is at what stage, the experience was cool. Next year we're do doing Hard Haunted Mansion, crossing my fingers that those people know how to organize a party
HIGHLY disorganized, horrible venue, chaotic and dangerous! Good DJ's, but the venue needs to change. GO Ventures or wheover organized this needs to do a better job!
TIPS:
COME HERE EARLY!
COME HERE READY!
COME HERE DRUNK!

Seriously you need something to get yourself ready for the sheez that you are getting into!!!
You like classical, opera, jazz.... mellow music...
STAY HOME!!!
This is not for you!!!!
Bring you glow sticks! put on some costume... you don't wanna come here wearing your plain shirt and jeans.. c'mon where's the fun! what's the point.... if your gonna do that put on your ipod play tiesto and stay home then get drunk...
Seriously you have to let loose in this place... this place don't give a fck about what you do... as long as you don't smoke in the hall way and bring drugs inside...
Lets talk about the music... shiz the line up is always awesome!
Note: When i was here i was mistaken for a drug dealer so many times.... damn... do i look like one??? i can't even count how many people asked for some E if i'm selling some...
Don't open your pack of cigarette before coming in...
Never again. Plenty of other raves to go to that are way better and far less dangerous. I really hate to sound uptight about a rave, but the line situation was honestly not acceptable. The line was hours long and wasn't moving (why would you understaff a massive??), and angry and/or high people were packing against each other, hopping fences, and knocking people over. At one point some douches in the line were CARRYING part of the metal fence. Someone could have been killed. Massive amounts of people pushing each other and screaming... not worth it at all. Other typical rave activities were fun as always, but there's plenty of other raves out there that are just as fun, have better setlists, and are not as dangerous.
I cant wait for this! I'm going this year and have been looking forward to it. I went to EDC not long ago but got separated from the group I was with and ended up only staying an hour. Wow im soo excited! I have yet to buy my ticket tho.. prob in a week or so.
To be honest, I remember little from my first (and last) Monster Massive except for the crazy beginning. It was 2001... maybe 2002 and became the last rave I ever went to.
Went for a friend's 18th birthday with 20 other people. Took a limo. DJ Irene, AK 2000, some other big names that I have long since forgotten. Planned on being the only "sober" one that night. Next thing I know there was a little pill sliding down my throat. The adrenaline from anticipation made the wait to get in seem like forever, which it was. Think we smoked a couple joints in line. Immediately became popular with the surrounding crowd.
Once inside I realized this was going to be, by far, the biggest, craziest rave I had ever been to. What came next confirmed my suspicions.
45 minutes, some exploring, a $5 bottle of water, and another pill later some friends found me and explained in a panic that another of their friends had been caught by Cops doing illegal things and that they couldn't release him to fellow minors. Being 19 and feeling strangely sober at the time, I felt it was my responsibility to go help said troubled youth. After being escorted by security to a back area full of med-techs and cops I quickly realized what a bad idea this was. Too late!
As I tried to explain to the med-tech that I was going to take the kid out and send him home, I felt pill #1 suddenly kick in, full steam ahead! The med-tech was about to release the kid to me when she hesitated. Looking directly into my eyes, she asked if I was "on" anything.
SHIT! Abort mission! Abort! Panic and sweat consumed my body.
"Nah!" I lied. "Why do you ask?" trying to hide the sheer terror behind a complacent mask.
"Your pupils just suddenly became the size of saucers," responded the authoritative woman "and I don't feel comfortable releasing this guy to you in your state. In fact, I'm thinking of calling over those two police officers and having them question you." she quickly and angrily added.
My eyes went wide as she said this and when she turned away from me to look at the cops so as to get their attention, I bolted! Running as quickly as my pulsing muscles could move me, I soon found myself barreling down the hallways of the L.A. Sports Arena and soon burst into a huge room where all-sonic-hell was breaking loose. I spent the rest of the night separated from my friends with a sneaking suspicion that I had mistakingly entered the gates of Hell. This thought may have been amplified by the fact that there were countless people in costumes covered in blood. Or maybe it was just the drugs.
Afterwards, when I met up with everyone back at the limo we found a used condom inside. None of us had gone back to the limo until just then so it was assumed that the limo driver had been up to some interesting mischief whilst we blew our minds.
Disturbing night to say the least.
Couple words,
A GOOD MUTHAF*CKIN TIME!!
gets pretty crowded but its a massive! what else do expect?
Another long night of fun and dancing!
Monster Massive at the L.A. Sports Arena was a great time.
We arrived around 10pm, which was a bad time to try to get in.
Waited in line for about 45 minutes.
We had gone to Electric Daisy Carnival a few months ago, and got there arount 9 and were inside in about 5 minutes. But EDC starts at 4pm, whereas Monster Massive opens at 7pm.
The venue itself is a good space for this kind of event.
Good aount of vendors on the north and west sides of the venue.
Wish there were more water vendors by the Drum and Bass stage.
We also tried to meet up with friends, but cell service is bad.
security closed some doors and make them exit only on some sides and enter only on others. This is kinda a pain, cus you have to walk all the way around to get back to the main stage.
As for the entertainment, the DJ's were great, and the sound and lighting was awesome.
Overall a good and safe experience.
Overall
i had mixed feelings about mm as a well. the security crew was super rude and did push people around. the line to get into mm was the worst. everyone was pushing and jumping fences. very unsafe. i felt very uncomfortable being pushed against so many people. mm is starting to get very pricy. i think they are all about the $ and could care less about the people there. i would not recommend mm. save your money and go to a better rave. starting to get over rated.
[Monster Massive 2008 ]
I've been in the Electronica scene for a long time. I've never particularly enjoyed Monster Massive yet always end up going last minute because my friends buy me a ticket or everyone (and their mom) is going and I want to have a blast with them.
Monster Massive 2008 was absolutely legendary!!!!!!!!!! Got to the Sports Area, parked a little way's away (found parking REALLY quick), no hassle, found some friends in line, took about 15 minutes to get in, found my friends, and the night just went off from there. Of course there were HELLA people I didn't find because of the phone issues (too many people in one area), but I was happy to find the ones that I did. My wifey Sol (goth girl), Tracy (sexy maid?), little dongseng Tina (school girl), my mama Ana (my madame), Heather (rainbow bright), Chi (cute bee), Roxy (feisty leopard), my unnie Susan, Rachel, Kat, Casey, and Crystal (pirates) were ALL SO BEAUTIFUL & SEXY (and many more of course)! What was up with the pirate theme??? Lots of leopards too! Oh I went as a leopard as well. :-)
It was a sauna in the girls restroom and inside the main room but the music was off the hook. The second I went in John O' Callahan was TEARING IT UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He made me remember why I got into the scene in the first place. A M A Z I N G! His remix of Big Sky!? OMG! Did he just save that one for Monster? I had never heard it before. I was just amazed! PVD was actually really good too! I've heard PVD about a gazillion times in the past MANY years but he was great at Monster. I was in the house room (Pete Tong/Felix/etc etc) and the energy was awesome too. Definitely didn't compare to the main room but it was good. The drum and bass area was okay too but it got a bit TOO drum and basey for me. I got stuck outside for a while since the main room was too packed, which I didn't mind because my hair was turning into a fro (naturally curly hair). I've never walked so much at a massive before!
Yes, there are MANY kids that come out to Monster Massive. It's all ages, you see crazy 12 year old's doing God knows what, little kids hit on you, it's so crowded that you HAVE to push your way through everyone, it's a SAUNA inside, the bathrooms are a mess, the line to get into the bathroom is worse, you are lucky if you find your friends because the phones are all down, but you know what? The music is awesome, the energy is unbeatable, and having your loved ones around with all of that going on is just absolutely.... wait for it.... L E G E N D A R Y.
