Truffle Sicilian Sea Salt, 4-ounces, $26.99!

Yes, sodium sensitive me spent said amount because Miguel pulled a vial of said salt from his apron pocket to seduce my olfactory system. I was then putty in his hands, ready for his crash course in the other fine finishing salts Monsieur Marcel has to offer; think lavender, citrus, vanilla... Miguel assured me my culinary investment, if stored in a cool, dry pantry would "keep" indefinitely for use on fries, meats and even popcorn!
Excited about my "find", I insisted that Michael P. and Martin M. return with me to check out this eclectic, French grocery (chocolate, cheese, vino, spirits, pasta, vinegars, cookbooks, MORE) and bistro (Miguel highly recommended his fave, Sandwich Normandie à la presse - grilled baguette with bacon, apple, brie and apricot jam).
And for his encore lesson, he allowed us to compare two Hawaiian Black Lava Salts, one flat cut, one coarse à la Kosher, both very different in perceived saltiness, unique. A tad goes a long way, next time...
Great to have an impressive go-to to gift my foodie friends! Oh, and a scant "pinch" of that Truffle Sea Salt pleasantly pitched tonight's pasta primavera's, flavor factor up!
    Merci, Monsieur Marcel!

Actually I would give three and half stars.

I was there only for the cheese fondue, that was all we had and that is what i am gonna review on now.

Love the taste of the cheese fondue! They have 4 types of fondues, we order the couples fondue for $29. The cheese were pretty good, you can taste the white wine, the different kinds of cheese melting and mixing..

But they kinda lacks of varieties in terms of the food to dip into. The fondue only comes with plain white bread. You can add $3 extra for apple slides or potatoes. I would definitely expect more options, especially the portion of the fondue is pretty generous, you could get bored easily with the same dipping after a while.

Monsieur Marcel is the cutest little french market & outdoor restaurant in the Farmer's Market at the Grove.

    Best things about this place:
    - Macaroons - chewy, fluffy & flavorful. I think this is the best macaroon I've had yet.
    - Croque Madame - Most places are either too sweet, too salty, too soggy, too hard. Here's it's the perfect combination of crunchiness & flavor.

I hear their sandwiches are also great but I have yet to have the chance to try it.I'll be back for more salted caramel macaroons!

This is a cute little bistro tucked into the back corner of the Farmers Market/Grove. It is a bit pricey but I always have a good time when I am here. The seating is outdoor/covered and is a bit romantic in the evenings.

Their cheese selection is great. The service reminds me of Europe....they don't bug you and get the check till you are ready and ask them for it. I have never got any attitude from the servers but then it's LA and not Paris!

They bring you a complementary basket of mixed breads and olives which are really good. I love the roasted beet salad and their quiches are pretty good. I had the one with leeks and artichoke and it was pretty tasty. Hubby ordered the "quiche Lorraine" ham and cheese, and he really liked it (read he did not want to share with me!). They have a decent wine list but it's their cheese selection that is truly awesome!

Overall, it makes for a cute date night if you are at the Grove.

I'm on a bit of a foie gras feeding frenzy of late due to the impending California ban on its sale--gotta get in as much as I can before it's an out-of-state affair to indulge in force-fed poultry organs. That being said, Monsieur Marcel is one of my favorite places to get it because 1) it's served in the traditional French way (room temperature, delicate flavor and the consistency of butter), and 2) I can purchase more at the connected gourmet market to bring home with me and eat it twice in a day (you can thank me later, cardiologists). It's usually accompanied by glazed & roasted figs that are a great flavor pairing.

The salads are pretty darn tasty--they had a roasted beet salad on special that was beautifully presented and delicious. I also love their extremely simple but tasty butter lettuce salad with dijon vinaigrette--very fresh, if not a tad overpriced.

I also get my mussel (moules et frites) fix here--it's mussels and clams in a cream broth (you can omit the cream if desired), served with French-style shoestring fries. The nice waitress brought some delicious truffle sea salt to sprinkle on the fries (YUM), and I promptly went and bought some at the market (truffle on EVERYTHING!!).

Speaking of truffles on everything, that would complete my triumvirate of recent food obsessions (foie gras, mussels, truffles), and the truffle deviled eggs on the happy hour menu were RIDICULOUS. Oh my god, who knew eggs could be so wickedly decadent? And there's about 20 different forms of truffles (white, black, oils, butters, dried, fresh, salt) to come by at the market if you get a hankering to re-create a truffle-ized dish (yes, that's a word--I just coined it. Feel free to use it, free of charge) at home.

The seating is outdoor/covered in the Farmer's Market area. They have a decent wine list, but no beer. Champagne or a nice French rose' always make fine choices with bistro fare, anyhow. For a delicious, casual lunch-and-shopping outing mid-city, it can't be beat.

They have bar type seating in the main area which faces out to the market and other eateries, so its great for people watching. Great for lunch on a beautiful LA day.

Happy hour - 50% off glasses of wine -- yeah (thumbs up)!  A bunch of small plates also were available, but none of interest to me (thumbs down).

Ultra-cute decor, painted in yellow, and a double-wide space in the farmers market section of the Grove...it's french, casual, and with candles lit at every table...made for quite a lovely setting (...and thank you for the heat lamps!).  With all that and the low ceilings, it provides a nice and intimate setting.

A basket of varied breads and crackers were served...delish and freeeeeeeee!  I was so turned on by the bread, I decided to try the brie on baguette, served with a side salad.  The bread was fab, and the brie was fab x2.  The salad of mixed greens was really tasty, but was just trenched in dressing.  I had a few bites of a quiche -- and that was excellent.

So, I'm a little mixed up with my feelings of this place.  Overall, I liked the experience and the ambiance.  But I need to go back and try a few more things before I can surmise a final conclusion: a cheese plate, and/or a steak with pomme frites would have to be next.  For now, it gets a solid B grade.

This is a cute little bistro tucked into the back corner of the Farmers Market/Grove.  I usually am sucked into the singaporean food place, but have been known to come here with a group for lunch.  I am a huge fan of this old LA market, and I think this place makes a nice mix of an LA vibe and casual French food.  It has fairly simple decor, half open to the market and colorful bookshelves and provencal tablecloths.

It is not cheap, but it is nice place to sit and people watch while having good food.  They bring you a nice basket of mixed breads and olives which are really good.  This is the best place to sit and have a wine lunch, which is the only way to have a french lunch, right?  They also have a market to buy artisan goods.  I like the onion soup, the nicoise salad and the baked escargot the best.   And I even got a little attitude from the service, but that just projects more authenticity to French cuisine in my book.

Enjoyed the day at the Grove~ and was looking for a new experience! Found a nice shady area in the corner which was less packed.
As much as I enjoyed the ambience I couldnt say the same for the food.  I got the Ahi Tuna salad special which wasnt quite up to par (small salad and overcooked ahi) ... yet my boyfriend enjoyed his sandwich.  But being an Italian restaurant I was hoping for at least some bread as appetizer and nada, but I saw some people requesting some so I guess its possible.  But nothing a glass of vino and good company cant make up for :)

This ain't yo mama's meat and potatoes!

Unless, of course, yo mama's a clasically trained French Chef....then, yeah, I guess it very well might be....in which case, I wanna meet yo mama.

THE BEST BOEUF BOURGUIGNON I HAVE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE!

    http://www.yelp.com/bi...

(ok, ok...so maybe it's the ONLY boeuf bourguignon I have ever had in my life.....but that doesn't make the previous statement any less true....and I'm also a huge fan of screaming over the top grandiose statements in yelp reviews...so what?!)

Comfort food at it's absolute finest.  Tender cuts of savory boneless short ribs, pearl onions, mushrooms, fingerling potatoes, carrots in this amazingly rich red wine reduction broth served with some tasty, buttery Papardelle pasta.  DELICIOUS.

Maybe it's because it reminded me of my childhood when my mom would make a simple meat and potato type of dish...but you can tell it's cooked with love.  As retarded as it sounds....You can taste the love in this dish.

You also get a complimentary basket of warm French bread http://www.yelp.com/bi... which was perfect to sop up the remainder of the broth from the bourguignon.

I left completely stuffed and satisfied...but if you're still hungry or feeling extra generous....stop by their market and buy me some Foie Gras!

    http://www.yelp.com/bi...

C'mon, it's only $124.00 per pound! ...and I'll love you forever...and I'll have you know...my love for you is priceless... you crazy yelp bastards, you.

Not sure about you guys, but I am all for bourgeois, overpriced deli meat and cheese.

I am the type that uses brick phones and refurbished laptops, but when it comes to cheese and meat, you know, feeding my inner fat child...

I can't pronounce half of the things they sell at Mr. Marcel even though I took French 101 just a while ago. Pate variety is about $15/lb, and it is excellent in every single bite. Their truffle ham gives off this intoxicating fragrance and is one of the most delicious hams I've ever tasted, since the only kind of ham I knew of was the typical water ham thing you buy from the chained supermarkets. This place wraps everything in white paper bag, which makes me feel like a barefoot contessa, slathering myself in "good olive oil" and "good ham" and "really good cheese". Bottom line is, anything dry, picnic snacks, buckets of olives and other assortments, you name it, they have it here; except for handsome French men who will spoon feed you gourmet cheese and wine.

Mr. Marcel- the restaurant is also a great place to impress your date: it is mellow, it is bourgeois, and it is expensive. Come during happy hour from 3-7 Mon-Thurs (methinks?) and get a variety of wine for half the price (about $4-5/glass)!!!!

So bourgeois I am sending my children to private school and suggesting my husband to purchase a new yacht as I sip on earl grey tea and fondle my poodle whose name is Sophie *adjusts monocle*.

    and i'm back.

it's been a while , but the hectic nature of my life as kept me from yelping.

over the past few months i have eaten here almost religiously, mostly because the farmers market is conveniently located near a weekly appointment that brings me to the fairfax area.

i actually really, really love this place. they have well prepared food at a decent price, the service is good, and you can watch people at the farmers market.

i don't think i've ever had a bad meal here, but there are definitely things that i prefer over other things.  i started coming here for the mussels and clams, which i still argue is their best dish.  it's a very simple dish, which is sometimes the best kind. although i don't think they call it this way on the menu, it's basically a moules marineres. bien sur, avec palourdes.  fine, my french is really poor and i'm not even sure that this is the proper way to say "clams,"  but my taste is really superior, so don't let that cast doubt on my review.  and also, i've eaten this dish in calais and boulogne-sur-mer, so i know what's what.

the point is that they use really fresh herbs and they cook the mollusks perfectly.  you can also get this dish with or without cream, if omitting dairy is your thing.  in the true french style, the dish is served avec frittes.  for just a slight upcharge (something like $1, i think) you can add truffle oil to the frittes.  also, they have always been really accommodating about substituting a green salad for the potatoes.

recently, i've been ordering other things.  the salmon off the daily menu is excellent, with the skin fried perfectly crisply.  the scallops are also amazing.  the salads are good, if you aren't quite as hungry.

in addition, they run weekly(?) specials.  a couple of weeks ago they were serving this really great duck.  i'm always highly skeptical of duck, as in my experience, it's either really amazing or really disappointing and then you're stuck with this expensive an inedible entree.  i hate disappointment.  but the duck here was really, really good.  it was served with pureed navy beans cooked with lardons.  i also had an appetizer special of santa barbara praws about a month ago.  i recognize that not everyone feels this way, but there is something so satisfying about crunching down on in-shell prawns.  it makes me feel like darryl hannah in splash (i know i'm dating myself with this reference).  i mean, you can take them out of the shells as much as possible, but you're still going to run into exoskeleton.  in general, i hate messy food, but i love eating prawns this way.

if you go between the hours of 4-7 (i think), they run happy hour specials.  they have a good wine list.  and since i was going there so much, the waitress remembers what i drink and has made subsequent recommendations of wines to try.  this is something i really appreciate.

    i highly recommend.

French bistro classics served in a charming semi-outdoor area. Relaxed and groovy. Great way to experience the Farmer's Market atmosphere. The tarte tatin is the real deal. They do an interpretation of Coquilles St. Jacques that's pretty great, too. Oh, and they have a good children's menu -- something you won't find at a lot of french bistros.

Was here over the weekend and starving. We put our name in at Dupars, but stumbled upon this place and were able to get seated right away! (Sorry Dupars).

Since the Wifey and I love French Food, we decided to try this place out. Super crowded and seemed to be popular... so why not?

I got the Coq Au Vin and she got the Croque Madame. Both were pretty good. The Coq Au Vin came with a side of garlic scalloped potatoes, which were swimming in grease(-1 star). I tried to eat around it, but how do you eat around oil? Coq Au Vin was actually the best I've had in LA, and this is prob the 3rd time I've tried it. I'm assuming there is always going to be better but I liked it.

Croque madame was very good, but again greasy. Had to pat it down a bit with a napkin.

We also split a French onion soup. Came way after entrees (-1 star).

All in all, I'd eat here again if it was less crowded and if I didn't have to wait too long for a table.

PS they have a cool little market as well that sells French groceries, wine and cheeses.

This was our first trip to the Farmer's Market in LA  and we loved it! After being in BH and WeHo for days, it was a welcomed change to experience a more soulful part of the metro.
Encouraged by the high reviews, we chose this as our lunch spot for the day and selected the daily special: grilled chicken with mixed mesclun greens tossed with a champagne vinaigrette and topped off with some shaved french cheese. To make certain that we didn't go too healthy, a side of fries to split and a glass of pinot noir. The place was packed and we were on a schedule, so we were a bit concerned that everything would arrive in time for us to enjoy (we are not meal inhalers). Service was prompt, despite only 2 waiters working the entire area, the food was delicious, the wine divine and the portions just right. Overall, a terrific value.

I went to Monsieur Marcel today with a large group. We planned on eating a nice lunch before we caught a  movie. We decided on Monsieur Marcel, and I was so glad we did !

First, I started out with a regular latte, and my friend got a cappuccino. Later in the meal, I got a regular coffee. All coffees were high quality and very delicious.

For my lunch I ordered "quiche aux poireaux" which is a Leeks and Artichokes Quiche with goat cheese. Very delicious and filling. I also got it with a side a green salad.
My only comment would be that they need to offer a side of fresh fruit as well. The only side selections with the Quiches are salad or french fries.  I really would have preferred a side of fruit, but the waiter said they did not have it available.

My friend across the table got a "quiche lorraine" ham and cheese, and he really liked it. The friend next to me got the "croque monsieur" which was a ham and cheese sandwich that looked either deep fried or baked. I had a bite, and it was fantastic.

Sitting at Monsieur Marcel's on a sunny December lunchtime in California was wonderful. I had a delicious Quiche, and got to sit and watch all the people in the Farmers Market go passed. It was an enjoyable lunch, before I headed off to catch the movie with my friends.

I may be bias because I really like cheese or because of my admiration of French culture.

I looked at the menu and got really excited. Everything just sounded so good. After much thought, I decided to just go with the cheese plate, assiette du beaujolais, which I enjoyed.

I'm looking forward to going back and trying a quiche, boeuf bourguignon, and a croque monsieur.

The atmosphere is really nice and cozy: it's tucked back in the corner of the Farmer's Market and loaded with heaters perfect for a cold winter evening.

    Je t'aime, M. Marcel.

Nice setting in the Farmer's Market and some favorites are on the - coq au vin, beef bourgninon, croque monsieur...but the service is a bit off. Friendly and positive, but glasses of wine don't arrive, teas don't get delivered. If you are ok with chasing a bit for what you want then you can forgive Monsieur Marcel.

Samantha and I ordered a late lunch a couple of hours before a big Xmas party which promised tons of food so we were restrained. Quiche with goats chees and leek - very pungent - with salad which came tossed in too much dressing. My croque monsieur was great. And the fries were skinny and French style ;)

i'd come again. I think Samantha would prefer Little Next Door as some of the prices were a little high, but there are some budget-minded items too.

Dined here last night with my lady.

We were just wandering around after having a bottle of wine with friends at the bar.

The setting is really quaint and because we sat at the bar it enabled some great people watching.  We had the hanger steak with fries and a goat cheese salad with french onion soup.  The soup was a little watery for my taste but the goat cheese salad was killer.  The hanger steak was prepared very well but I didn't enjoy the taste so much.

We also had a killer bottle of wine for a very fair price.

I really wanted to give this 4 stars but the food left a little to be desired.

This place is such a cute date place, despite it being in the middle of the farmer's market. I guess that gives it a semi casual kick to it, not to mention that it's a nice place to grab a bite after a day of shopping at the Grove.

Service was OK, I wish they were a little more attentive for the fatty tab they left. I parked at the grove, came to eat, grabbed coffee at Starbucks (with validation), and left with free parking.

Food and wine were excellent. Especially the wine =)

Fish appetizer two ways: this was a special of the day, a tartare with microgreens, onions and tomatoes, and seared white fish with a fresh chimichurri type of sauce. This was a really great starter dish.

Soup of the day was a tomato bisque that came with a small piece of toast with melted brie on top for dipping. Excellent smooth texture in the soup, creamy and flavorful.

Coq au vin had amazing flavors, even though it was so simple. Chicken, with a mushroom/burgundy reduction with a potato gratin. I don't think I would order this again though. Next time I'll probably try the croque madam or monsieur.

Every time I come down to Lala-land, the Grove is one of my go-to places. I love the outdoor mall, people walking with their pets and of course the landmark Farmers Market, which has cool food spots like Monsieur Marcel. This place would be Anhdao D's idea of heaven being the Francophile that she is. I love the selection of truffles that they carry here. They actually have truffle mushrooms, which you can buy three of for a whopping $70. I had risotto with some shaved truffles and it was divine so this is going to be a special dinner treat sometime soon :-) We walked away with truffle salt at a bargain price. Can't wait to sprinkle some of that on my breakfast eggs!

Lots of interesting offerings, but I was there only for the cheeses.

Good selection of cheeses, interestingly presented.  Wonderful descriptions on each cheese, but did not mention whether they were cow, goat, or sheep.  A bit odd, considering all the effort they went to to describe each cheese and write it on a card.  But the selection was much better than I expected.  Not too exotic, but enough to provide a good offering at any party.

Even if you're not buying, stop and browse the cheeses.  It's more entertaining than most of the Farmers Market offerings.

Decent selection of goods, but I have to say that I've found similar quality for better prices... at Whole Foods... that's saying a lot!

Customer service could be more professional overall.

What a great gourmet mini market !
This is the place you usually shop at when you're missing the ingredient(s) that a regular grocery store doesn't carry.  Everything is awesome about this store!
I usually take a peek or browse around whenever im at Farmers Market.  Who knows...? .. I may find something new and exciting that I haven't tried thus far!
If you love to cook  (like me)..just stop by this place and check it out!

Wow, this place really impressed me last night.

We took a friend visiting LA and just had the best overall experience.

The service rocked. We ordered a bunch of aps and shared which is always fun.

If you're looking for a red try the Pinot Beaujalais. Very mellow and tasty--it's @$36 but worth it.

    -The escargots are still delish.

    -The lobster bisque-to die for

-The baked brie-dangerous and equally amazing

-The artichoke hearts, meh, but they were certainly not bad

-The endive salad was very good as well

All this comes with free bread and olives.

$114 was the damage for 3 but very much worth it.

One of the best restaurants in LA--it was so romantic closing it down when the Grove goes to sleep on a weeknight. Truly a hidden gem.

I was offeded when after ordering a to-go sandwich I was told that they didn't have time, they restaurant was too busy. This was at their to-go counter mind you a service they usually offer. As a regular customer I will not return after this refusal. Au revoir!

It may sound French but that shouldn't discourage you from having a tasty, affordable meal in time to enjoy the rest of your plans.

It can get crowded and service may be affected but Marcel's is usually always a good call if you're here visiting any of the countless museums, shops or shows of Hollywood. Dependable quality, service and selection are what you want and though prices can seem a bit high, you realize that quantity and quality, two sure signs of customer care, are the tour de force here. It's easy to order one sandwich and split between two people.

Is "frugal" a French word? Non, I think not.

    Used to be way better.

Go for the bread basket, a glass of wine and great location.  The food just keeps getting worse.

Cute little boutique of French (and otherwise) foodstuffs, condiments, and the like. Definitely a chef's paradise, lots of obscure items and rare finds.

Some items are a bit pricey, but you get what you pay for, and that's definitely what makes this place a find, the rarity and quality of their wares.

The concept that this place is becoming a chain is be-yond me. Chain? As in, like, TGI Fridays? Monsieur is so far from it.

Factoid is that Marcel's is "boss"! Not only does this place rock a steak that is TDF, but it does kid-menu sliders that are approvable by even finicky eaters. (You know how impossible it is to get my 5 y/o to eat, like, ANYthing? We're talking about a kid who thinks vanilla bean ice cream is "too spicy". Rme.)

A host of Happy Hour wines sooth the stressed parent and make for a calm bambino in the end.
    Ahhh, yes!

Monsieur Marcel is a great gourmet grocery.  The cheese monger knows what he is doing...tell him the kinds of things that you like, and he will introduce you to cheese that you love.  Great fresh baguettes.  And, the caviar cheese will change your life.  Delicious!  I also love the selection of international products.  A great spot to get those specialty items that are sure to impress any gourmand.  My only ding is the cafe is a little disappointing.  The food is generally good, but it is pricey and the service is AWFUL.  C'est la vie!

This restaurant is located at the Farmers Market. They have a market side and a restaurant side. Although the quality of food is quite good, it's also pricey. I had the onion soup and hamburger. Both were good. Will come back next time I'm at the Farmers Market.

This place is a gem.  hidden in the back of the Farmers Market.  After a long day of shopping some wine and light eats at a romantic little spot is a perfect ending.
    We order:
Foie Gras on toast with figs.  4 pieces of heaven

Mussels and Clams in white wine  sauce.  so good...but i wish the mussels were bigger

Brussel sprouts.  Came with some pork pieces and raisins.   The perfect combo of sweet and savory.

All in all...If you are in the Farmers Market and dont want to wait on that crazy long line for the Brazilian BBQ and you do want to sit down after a lot of shopping...Come to Monsieur.
