5 reviews for Monks Wine Lounge and Bistro
I love this place. Its the perfect way to escape the filthiness of downtown Chico and enjoy yourself. That is, if your not trying to get piss ass drunk, lose a shoe, and wake up next to some bimbo named Brittany. It's even quiet enough that you can have a real conversation with your friends! The inside is really cute and comfortable and they display cool, local art. I didnt give it 5 stars because from time to time the services is so so/ a little on the slow side.
They have a wonderful wine list, duh, but several other good drink choices too. My personal favorite is the sangria. Also, their food is fabulous. A little over priced, but it definitely adds to the experience. I recommend the fruit and cheese plate for starters. On the weekends they have a live jazz band...so classy it makes you forget you are a starving college student in Chico, blowing your entire paycheck in one night. Ahhh, the memories.
I really like this place. The atmposphere is great and the waiters really know there stuff. very fun place to visit with girlfriends or a romantic evening with a special someone!
This is the only serious wine bar in Chico. IMO. They stock a great selection of wines from California, and a large number of them are from the Gold Country (my fav). The wine here is not your average restaurant faire. Think $$ per glass. Try the "Flight of the Monk"--thats three good sized samples for the price of one glass. A great place to explore and the atmosphere is not too posh but sharp enough to get dressy. I discovered one of my favorite wines here (Sobon Estate "Rocky Top") The food is not the best--their only downfall-- but they have lots of wine complementing dishes. Dont go there for dinner, but go to enjoy wine with some food on the side. Its not too big so go with a small crowd.
BTW...There are a number of nice wine retail spots like Cellar Creek and Vino 100. Monks also sells bottles but I would not purchase wine here because of their restaurant pricing. Vino 100 carries nearly all of the same wines for much cheaper. Sorry Monks!
Monks is the only wine bar in downtown Chico. The vibe is upscale, so you won't find the Riley's crowd within a barge pole of this place. Monk's serves as a nice place to meet friends, sit in one of the window seats, and enjoy a nice glass of wine. One of my favorite things about Monk's is that you don't have to turn your vocal chords up to 11; you can actually hold a conversation at a normal volume.
The food here is excellent; Monk's small kitchen offers a limited menu, but everything has been wonderful. I had a spaghetti in a light cream tomato sauce with spinach and grilled chicken which was very tasty, and the cheese plate is the best I've ever had, with olives, almonds, bruschetta, and a nice presentation. An interesting wine selection, relaxed ambiance, and that cheese plate will keep me coming back.
Great atmosphere, wine list, appetizers, art exhibits and occasionally live music. This is a great place for a special occasion or whenever. Sometimes the service acts like they recently read a book on how to appear upscale and instead seem distracted and stiff, but overall it's really nice.
