There are really two "tales"....the one that exists before 11pm & the one that takes over as it gets later. Both are good, but the late one gets the 5 stars. Though I've been here too many times to count, I've never ate here, but I can always get a stiff drink & have a great time with friends. You know you had a good time when you frequently have to take a cab back to the Tale to retrieve your car & credit card.

if you visiting Indy, you have a few options: the backyard BBQ and pool party, the downtown scene, or the college-bar-esque atmosphere that is Broad Ripple.*
Monkey's Tale is right in the middle, has great karaoke outside, a huge deck area, cheap drinks (on par for Indy but for those of us accustomed to LA, NYC, SF, and/or Miami, you wouldn't be surprised to hear that it had one friend HUGGING a waitress thinking she'd significantly discounted our tab)
The clientele are pretty solid, so much so that one turned out to be a bartender at a place nearby which resulted in a lock-in and lots of complimentary drinks.
Would I go back? Absolutely.
*note: many locals will slur "broad ripple" (two words) into one gelatinous multisyllabic blurb that almost sounds like the name of a terrible strip club, but it's two words and in fact a rather innocent sounding Midwestern-type name. -

Recently having gone some cosmetic renovations, the Monkey's Tale is a unique Broad Ripple spot that has regular live music, though they rarely feature emerging artists; it's more of a cover-band type of atmosphere.
The Tale has great drinks and friendly bartenders who know how to treat people who like to just chill and drink some cocktails. When there are not bands playing, they have good music in the background and it's just an overall chilled out vibe in there. In the summertime, they often have bands playing on the outside deck both during the early parts and the day, as well as at night. The deck is large and is super cool at night, when the weather is enjoyable.
Metered parking is available on the street along Westfield. There is also a surface lot across the street, which is free during the day and usually costs $5 on weekend nights. -

Nice little quaint spot in Broad Ripple. The live music was good, very casual. A little too smokey for me but I would definitely go back.

In my opinion, this is one of the best night spots in broad ripple. They have an awesome patio area that lets you hang out under the summer air while listening to the live band or people trying to sing karaoke. I would go a bit earlier than 11:00, otherwise there may not be a seat on the patio. The bar is always friendly and packed, but not to the point where you risk being parched. Good music, good people, good times.

By far my favorite spot in Broad Ripple to hang outdoors and drink with friends. This spot has a large patio with ample seating where live music and karaoke is done nightly. There is usually a $5 cover on weekend nights but I gladly pay that to be able to sit outside on a nice summer night and drink a few brews. The bar inside is reasonably priced, $2.50 per beer usually, and is not packed enough to make it difficult to get served. If you like live music and are not into the dark, crowded, noisy, smokey atmosphere of most Broad Ripple establishments, give this one a try and you wont be disappointed
