Mongolian Barbeque invented DIY stirfry in southeast MI almost 20 years ago.  By now, the model is so famous that it has become a brand and its reputation precedes it - pretty much everyone should be familiar with the concept, whether they've been there or not, and it has inspired some copycat places as well.

The idea seems cool when you first hear about it, but I tired of it eventually.  Unless you're super creative, you don't always want to create your own menu every you sit down for dinner - this was the case for me, even though a friend has described me as a culinary intermediate. This may be true for others as well, since they're diversifying and offering fancy desserts and drinks, and other foods such as Pho, instead of relying exclusively on what made them famous.

This place gains points for the great staff, especially our middle aged Italian waitress, and being a fun place for a group, but loses points for not having the incredible tomato bisque that I had at the Mongo in Royal Oak several years ago, and being a little more expensive than I'm used to.

Fun, Fun, Fun.  The restaurant is loud, the bar is packed, and the waitstaff is over the top friendly.  If you've never been to a Mongolian BBQ, then buckle up, cause this is not for the fan of sit down restaurants.  It's a do it yourself place and you have to do a little walk thru first.  There's a soup and salad bar, but I skip those.  Go directly for the meat section.  They are all there, including a good amount of seafood.  You take a bowl, fill it with the meat (s) you want, but don't over fill it, you want some veggies to go with that!!  Head over to the fresh veggie area, and help yourself to your favorites.  I get some pea pods, white onions, mushrooms, baby corn, and I take an egg (more on that later) head over to the "seasoning" area.  This is where it gets tricky.  You know by now some of those sauces are just not going to taste good together.  But experiment a little, remember this is all you can eat, if you don't like it, go back again.  I take a little Mongo Mushroom Sauce, a little soy sauce, a touch of scezeuan (SP) sauce, a touch of garlic, a little cayenne pepper, a touch of ginger.  Now turn around with your heaping bowl and head to the big grill in the middle.  The air traffic controller then tells you where to stand.  You hand the bowl to the cooks who then take it, pour it on the grill   and they take this long sticks and stir it for about 5 minutes while they work on other peoples at the same time.  After it cooks for about 5 minutes, they take your sauce and pour it on, cook it again for about 3 minutes and then, TA DA, they add the egg and mix it in with everything else.  With one big swoosh, they slam that sucker into a bowl and hand it over to you.  Enjoy!  Take a big group and try everyone's, they should all be different but YUMMY!!  Did I mention they serve Zodiac here too?  Try it in their specialty drink: The Mood Ring.  Wow!
