I really really wanted to give this place a better review. I'm a big fan of establishments that turn a tight space into something cool, like Momos. It's similar to Ventnor's in Adams Morgan, particularly the old townhouse turned sports bar thing. The space is therefore narrow, but it's easy to see the TV's. We went the other night for both the UNC-GA Tech game (yay heels) and the Phillies game (boo). The bad review is for the food. I ordered a veggie burger and onion rings. Actually, the food review alone would be a 1.5, but I'm upping the starrage cause everything else was fine and the $15 for a bucket of 5 Yeunglings was cool.
Remember that 1984 campaign commercial/McDonalds ad "Where's the beef?" Well, that was my veggie burger: A HUGE bun and a tiny burger. Plus the burger was so overcooked, I could barely chew it. Definitely didn't sit right in the tummy either :-( Onion rings were also overcooked. Maybe the cook was lazy and basically pre-cooked this stuff and heated it up when an order came through? Dunno. The place was not busy at all, so that wasn't an excuse. Anyway, I will go back and order again and hopefully up the starrage. But, for now thumbs down on food, and thumbs up for beers and sports.
Met two friends for lunch there yesterday at the suggestion of one of them so I could watch the Clemson game on TV. Got there about 11:45 and the US soccer game was on every TV including the sound but no football had started yet. The guy inside the door saw my Clemson jacket and set me up in the front corner with the TV already on the right channel for the game. Friends got there and we got menus for brunch and regular entrees.
I ordered 3 or 4 Cokes during lunch and got Coke once - rest of the time the bartender brought me water. He seemed to be having trouble remember the orders from our table and he rarely got back to our table.
The place got more crowded including people going upstairs it appeared. I ordered brunch as did one of my companions while the other one got a sandwich. They brought the one guy's sandwich and left us waiting for our brunch. We kept waiting - the bartender had excuses 2-3 times and kept checking on it he claimed. The other person in my party with brunch had to go to the bar and check a couple of times.
We finally got our food and ate and paid and the friends left but I stayed to watch the rest of the game. The same bartender was waiting on people and it took me 20 minutes to get a beer - I even walked up to the bar to order and leave my card for a tab and still had to remind him I had ordered. He seemed to have trouble remembering the simplest order.
I had gotten steak and eggs for brunch. I ordered the eggs scrambled and got them fried. The steak was pretty tough and leathery in places and had pieces of gristle in it.
There was a very large group of Egyptian soccer fans watching their game and the sound was up for it (in Arabic) with the sound on every soccer or football game everyone else was watching off. The bartender seemed to be catering to the group of Egyptian soccer fans to the detriment of every other party in the restaurant. I don't know if it was just due to their size and the volume/frequency of them ordering stuff or if it was because he was gunning for a big tip from them.
As his replacement for the next shift came in, the bartender was better at taking orders from people for drinks who weren't right at the bar or in that large group.
I actually ordered another beer after the first one took so long to get - so that was two small draft beers in the whole 2nd half of a football game and I probably would have had 1-3 more if the service had been competent.
I went up to the bar to cash out when I got ready to leave after the game and the original bartender was already gone. The female bartender working now hands me a bill for $21.99. I had bought two draft beers on that tab. Either the original bartender was putting other people's drinks on my tab or he was charging me for the beer I initially ordered that he never brought and apparently forgot about. He would have had to do that twice I would think to at least get to $21. I ended up paying 14 for my two beers because it was so loud I don't think I was able to get my point across about what my order should be. I didn't complain too much because I looked back at my food bill and they apparently had not charged me for the 2 Cokes they actually brought me that I ordered with lunch.
Unless I have no other choice, it will be unlikely I go back here, especially not on a Saturday during football season.
This review isn't very far from 1 stars honestly but it wouldn't have taken much the other way for it to be a 3 or a 4 either if the first bartender had been the least bit attentive to detail.
Momos is great because it has buckets of beer. Buckets of beer are fun. I will tell you why I think so. I like any kind of food or drink that is communal. A bottle of wine. Family style dinner. A platter of Sushi. An appetizer of Calamari. With buckets, people share, converse, order rounds and just have a good time. You would think more places would adopt buckets. They must be easy to serve. They have a handle and can hold 5 beers at once. They come with ice, so they stay cold, and the servers don't have to come back to the tables so often because you serve 5 at once. Plus they're cheap.
Anyway, I like Momos for other reasons as well. It's definitely on the small side for a sports bar, but it has never been too crowded when I'm there. There are more than enough TVs for the small space. When the audio is not tuned to sports, they play some really excellent music. If you are looking for a large crowd of sports enthusiasts, not your best bet, but if you just want a chill spot to watch a game you're interested in, Momos is just right.
Relevant anecdote: I took a group of friends in from New York to Bar Pilar one night, because I thought they would like it. You know, because Bar Pilar would remind them of home and they would feel comfortable in this strange city. But, turns out..., it was a little upscale for them, and they just wanted bar food. So we went to Momos, and it was perfect. The food was plenty good enough, they were pleased with the strength of their mixed drinks, the DJ was spinning to everyone's satisfaction, and I had buckets of beer to share with only one other person. We all left quite happy.
We needed a place where guys wearing shorts, t-shirts, sandals and hats could get in.
We needed a place that would play music the girls would want to dance to.
We needed a place where I could get multiple beverages, foreign and domestic, at reasonable prices (ok that may just have been what I needed).
I didn't think we'd find all of it, but we did at Momo's.
When we walked in the downstairs was dead and I wasn't sure we were staying long until the phrase "$15 buckets of Miller Lite (5 bottles) on a Sat. night" entered our collective consciousness. The multiple TVs with all sorts of sports certainly didn't hurt, and when the DJ started playing some 80s music for the ladies, there was no turning back. We had our place for the night.
As time went on more and more people started showing up. The crowd was very mixed, unlike a lot of NYC bars where you'll only see pretty much one type of person, Momo's had a little bit of everything.
They also had a DJ who later on chose to play a decently long mix of nothing but early to mid 90s rap. This made my weekend.
Basically, Momo's doesn't look like much from the outside but it's a solid sports bar where a varied group of people can all have a good time. Can't beat that.
I've been there on a Tuesday night and for football on a Sunday. Tuesday was fine. The bartender/waiter was friendly and attentive. Sunday was another story. The service was horrible. We waited for 20 for the waiter. After he brought back our beers and a menu that was last we saw of him. Game was over and we left. I just don't get it, it's football sunday, people want to eat and drink, and you work for tips, why would you not walk around at least once in an hour to check on your tables? Truly amazing.
Weekday nights arefine if you are looking for bar food, but dont go on a Sunday.
2 AND A HALF STARS
The first visit - 5 stars
The second visit - 1 star
Total = 2.5 stars.
I think this place has a serious multiple personality problem. Its like The Many Faces of Eve in a bar form. The first time we went - last week - it was great. The second time - last night - it was HORRIBLE, especially the service and the manager.
First visit on October 1st: PERFECT!
We went to watch the first Caps game since this bar has Versus. The bartender was very friendly, brought our beers quickly, told us about a special they were running (Bucket of 5 PBRs in bottles for $15. Woohoo!) We ordered a bucket, and an additional round of beers. Service was GREAT. We also met Mo (Moe?), who I think is the owner? He was sitting at the bar and introduced himself. Said he wanted to make the place a Caps-friendly bar and to please come back. The other customers in the bar were friendly and all-in-all we had a great time! We were really excited to come back and make this bar our sports bar of choice for football games but especially for Caps games. Also, we saw someone order their wings and they looked delicious, so we made a plan to return for the next Caps game to be shown on Versus on October 6 AND order the wings....
Second visit, October 6: DISASTER!
We walked inand saw the Twins/Tigers game on the TV and a lot of people watching that game. We thought "uh-oh..." and asked the bartender if they would be (1) showing the Caps game and (2) putting on the SOUND for the Caps game. He said yes to each. It was 15 - 20 minutes before the start of the Caps game at this point. We had time to go someplace else if they were not intending to put the sound on, which is why we asked...
We asked again, specifically, if the sound would be on because we were surprised that they might turn the sound off of the Twins/Tigers game - and on for the Caps game - but the bartender, again, said yes. My husband ordered a beer and so did I, and we ordered 20 wings.
Time passed and the bartender spent a lot of time delivering beers and socializing with the baseball game viewers and patrons at the bar. I waited...and waited...and waited...for my beer. Nothing. He took and filled other customers orders. I sat. Finally I caught his eye and he did this "oh right I forgot about you" sort of gesture and finally brought my beer over. Took like 15 minutes for him to pull a tap and bring a beer. Grrr.
Meanwhile the manager (I guess?) walked by and we asked HIM: would they be turning the sound game on for the Caps game? We asked SPECIFICALLY ABOUT THE SOUND. he said YES. Pay attention to this fact as it is key to why I am so disgusted by this guy.
Time passes.
No wings. My husband's beer sits empty.
Bartender continues to fill other patron's beers and socialize with people at the bar. The Caps game starts. Sound stays on the baseball game. My husband walks over to the bar and asks the manager and bartender, what happened to putting the sound on? The Manager RUDELY says, "we aren't putting the sound on for the Caps game until the Twins game is over." My husband asks why he AND the bartender BOTH told us the sound would be on for the game if, in fact, they were not intending to put it on? My husband explains that they should have told us that when we asked FOUR TIMES because we could have gone someplace else but now the Caps game has started and we're stuck there. PLUS we had ordered food already. The manager tells my husband that "no one else is showing the Caps game" b/c they are the only ones who have Versus (not true) then he turned his back. He was not apologetic at all. He was totally rude and dismissive.
He lied to our face about the game and then wasn't even sorry about it!
Then we sat there waiting for 35 - yes, 35!!! - minutes for our wings to come and they NEVER did. My husband was never offered another beer either. Eventually I got up, told the bartender to forget the wings, give me my credit card and I would be going to a bar that was showing the game WITH the sound. The bartender was a nice guy and apologized - said he'd thought they would be putting the sound on. He picked up the tab for our 2 beers which we both appreciated. We got the hell out of there cursing the 45 minutes we'd spent there just to be mistreated, lied to and not served our f-ing food.
I think the owner probably put his friend in charge of the bar that night and shouldn't again. Guy doesn't know how to deal with customers. Honestly all he had to do is apologize and be nice about it but lying to our face and then making us feel like we should thank him for the opportunity to sit in there is bullshit. I've never been treated so poorly in a bar.
If you go, I hope you go on a night that MoMo has its nice face on, rather than its rude, evil, lying, nonexistent wings, bad service face on.
BOOOOO MOMO's
I had an incredibly pleasant afternoon here recently. This might become my favorite sports bar in all of DC. Decent beer, flat screens aplenty , lovely management and, if I may say so, the clientele is amongst the best I have ever encountered in a bar in DC.
Of course, that maybe because on a recent afternoon the clientele consisted entirely of me, my friend and a Chelsea fan whose sole purpose in life was to be there so I could see him despair whenever Barcelona scored their vital away goal in the recent European Champions League semi-final. My god that was a goal. My God that was a moment.
This bar is closed during the day but opens up for important soccer matches. The owners / managers are African and are soccer crazy. I want to give an extra star since they were wearing DC United gear.
And another extra star since they went upstairs to get the decent beer as oppose to the not-so-good stuff served on the downstairs bar.
I hope I can get organized to be here for the final - the oly better place to be might be Rome.
I dropped by Momo's on a Friday evening for drinks with friends before a show at the 9:30 Club. It was sparsely crowded and we found 3 seats at the bar with no problem (it was about 7:30pm). Momo's had a decent happy hour going on with $4 drafts, $4 rails and $5 martinis. I ordered a couple $5 martinis and told the bartender to just "make me something delicious with pineapple in it". He complied and I was a happy gal :)
Since we knew we'd be drinking all night, we decided to order some bar food. I had a hamburger with friends and my friend had the chicken fingers. The burger was quite large and actually pretty tasty. The fries were awesome! They were seasoned with a little cajun spice and really hit the spot. My friend tore up his chicken fingers within minutes, so I'm guessing he enjoyed them.
All in all, I'd definitely go back to Momo's for happy hour or to watch a game.
I have been meaning to write this review since Nov 4th, well Nov 5th I guess. I went to Momo's on election night (I know, a long time ago) and had a great time. Of course this was an atypical evening, but my friends and I managed to stake out enough room on the couches on the top floor for our election results gathering.
5 stars for hospitality because they were giving out bottles of wine all evening. By the end of the night there must have been a few dozen bottles littered around the top floor (not just my table, I swear). When someone asked why they were giving this out (and losing out on the associated $$$) the waiter just said "It's for Obama" -- nice.
In addition I remember having a fairly tasty burger, although given that every flat surface was being used as seating I ended up balancing my meal on my lap. There were several TVs on and the sound was good. The couches and chairs were pretty comfortable, and I imagine if it hadn't been such a crazy night there would be pretty of room to put your feet up and watch a game. The top floor is kind of like someone's living room rather than a sports bar. The other floors looked pretty nice too, but were just tables and chairs.
Only downsides were that it was ridiculously hot upstairs given how crowded it was, and also that there was only one bathroom stall.
While I don't think you will be getting free bottles of wine next time you go, the gesture was nice and encourages me to check it out again.
I've always enjoyed a field trip to any sports bar not named Bailey's or CCSP. My experience at Momo's was positive starting from the moment we hooked a right on U street and slipped into a rockstar parking spot during rush hour. The downstairs bartender greeted us with a smile and a shot (another patron ordered it. I graciously complied).
We arrived early to watch the World Cup qualifier and managed to save a few seats for friends. While two of their main happy hour beers (PBR & Bud Light) ran out an hour before the game started (boo), I joined the ranks of the Miller Lite drinkers and grabbed my raffle ticket with the hopes and dreams of winning autographed balls. Don't ask.
I did have an opportunity to sample the chicken fingers, chili and nachos and all proved simple and delicious. The third floor reminded me of an old college frat house but who can really complain about a pile of mismatched couches and a big TV? I'd like to show up on a lazy Sunday morning and watch marathons of The Hills or Keeping up with the Kardashian's if they'd have me.
One word of advice: Girls should use the restroom downstairs so you don't have to share with the boys in the double cool top secret third floor unisex bathroom.
Momos is one hell of a bar tucked away amongst the usual humdrum bar options on U-street. I won't be commenting on the sports bar aspect of it, though it has flat screen TVs with sports on all the time and that is enough to qualify in my opinion.
Decor/Music (5/5): Momos isn't a pretentious place. It's small as hell downstairs (I cannot comment on the upstairs as of now) and isn't winning any awards on the decor. But they have done a good job and making the decor irrelevant by using the space well enough to allow people to sit and still have a small dance floor. I was there this Saturday and the music, as always was bumpin; great DJ and great mix of old and new sounds to keep everyone happy and on their feet.
Crowd (4.5/5): Like U St. Momos is a melting pot on the weekends. The crowd was a picturesque gathering (and binge drinking) of races, genders and ages- really quite moving actually. Everyone had fun interacting with each other, reacting to the DJ and and dancing in the same sphere. No one was creeping or bringing the mood down in the place, which I appreciated. The crowd flow was also very natural, I was there most of the night and it never got too crowded or two empty- and I credit the bar and the bouncer for that.
Drinks and Service (8.5/10): Good specials and friendly service. Tabs are closed efficiently. Service is quick even at the small back bar. The shots of SoCo Lime I had almost made me puke- which is a good thing.
Adjustments: Clean bathroom (+0.5), Easy to catch a cab wasted (+0.5), T&A (+0), No smoking inside (-0.5)
Overall (18.5/20): Momos unpretentious atmosphere, fun crowd, cheap drinks and awesome music make it a place you'll probably end up after you are disappointed by some other POS bar in U street.
I'm gonna go with 4 stars because there are pretty much three categories that a sports bar really needs to be rated on, and Momo's seems to hit on 2 of them. They have essentially the perfect TV set up - between all the floors it's probably over 30, ALL of which are hidef. They have cheap beer - I watched part of a Caps game there recently and only spent $4 for two beers. So they have great tvs and cheap beer... What they are terribly weak on is beer selection. They only have a couple taps - I think it was Landshark and Yueungling (and the Yueungling was kicked!) and a few kinds of american bottles. I haven't had the food, so I can't comment on that, but I feel like that is less important for a sports bar. Ok, maybe wings are important. But besides that it's tvs and beer.
Momo's is a great place, and definitely the best place around U Street to watch the game, but they really need to add 6 or 8 more beers on tap to become a seriously cool sports bar.
Momo's excels in having cheap beer ($2 Bud American Ale, seriously I can't remember the last time I drank a $2 beer), good bar food (great burgers, great wings) and lots of TVs showing all manner of sporting contest.
Momo's does not excel at interior decor (go to Sports Authority, to the corner where they sell the cliched framed sports memorabilia, buy all of it, take it to a bar on U street, and you have Momo's), or sound design (take the music from the club next door and blast it through the speakers of this so-called "sports bar," and you have Momo's).
We left right when the "DJ" was setting up for his "Friday night spin." At a sports bar. Or a so-called one.
For a non-sports affiliated bar, there were way too many Eagles fans yesterday for a nice sports watching experience. Maybe it was the fact that Eagles fans are generally complete assholes, maybe it was the fact that nachos had an inadequate amount of cheese and toppings, and maybe it was because even the happy hour specials were not that "special," but I was disappointed in this place. A bucket of Heinies for $15? Thats about 100% mark-up and for a special, that is less than so!
I will watch my sports elsewhere from now on!
I'll have to qualify my review, since I went during the inauguration weekend chaos. The place was packed to watch the NFC and AFC championship games, and all three floors were filled with laid back and fun people who were all looking to have a good time, eat some wings and watch some football.
It's clearly a 3 floor row house that's been converted into a bar. So, while the space is limited, they have really maximized each floor to make for a nice sports bar experience. The top floor has couches and old chairs to make for a lounge. The second floor has high tables and bar stools with lots of TVs on every wall. The bottom floor has its own unique feel. I liked the thought that went into the design of this place, and would definitely go back for another sporting experience.
In my frantic scramble attempting to watch the most important football game of the year (Utah/BYU) I settled on Momo's. After calling the bar to make sure they had the obscure channel it was all set up.
I arrived in time for kickoff and I was given a good TV to watch it. Luckily I did my research ahead of time because they had no idea what channel it was playing on (616) and it made finding it so much easier. It was a bit distracting because VA Tech was playing at the same time and all the sound was for that game which really threw me off. Fortunately I'm skilled at knowing referee hand signals so I could figure out the majority of the flags!
Alright, the bar itself is just okay. The food was mediocre at best and came at completely different temperatures. Hot chicken fingers and cold fries. It was really quite odd. I would have docked them for it, but it was cheap! At the end of the night we had only racked up a $43.00 tab. We had a pitcher of beer, a quesadilla, 2 orders of onion rings and chicken fingers. I was impressed with how much we got for so little. Usually bars tend to overprice everything even if it's crappy so I was pleasantly surprised.
Even after other games came on they still let me have my TV until the end. That makes it a good place in my book!
Also, the Utes won so how could I merit this anything less than 4?
Came here to watch the NBA finals. Wow was this place packed. We hurried up to the top floor lounge. It was quite spacious with comfy couches. We did have to go down stairs to order our $10 pitchers of coors light. Not a bad deal at all. We got the nachos which were huge but I didn't like that they were doused with chili instead of a good seasoned beef.
So I fully expected Momo's to carry the Pacquiao vs De La Hoya fight on Dec 6th but after actually confirming with a staff a few days before that they were indeed carrying the PPV fight, a friend and I head down there fully expecting to see it. But we were disappointed to discover that they decided that night not to carry it. That's just really uncool! So we decide to have burgers there and head down to a place called Indulj down the street, where they are showing the fight.
The burgers were ok, a little on the dry, overcooked side and the fries were not hot at all. So double disappointment for us at this place.
Don't think we'll ever come back. The only plus was the staff were friendly and had our food out quickly.
I can only speak for Momo's in the early evening -- since I went here tonight in order to get food (on the strength of the positive Yelp reviews)!
The very good news is I can confirm that the food here is certainly a cut above in quality what you'd necessarily expect from a sports bar. The menu itself is limited (mainly burgers and the usual fare), but it seems that what they do, they do very well.
The vibe when I went there (as I say, early evening, about 8-9pm on a non-game night) was chilled -- almost struck me as a 'locals' bar but very receptive. The barkeep was welcoming and friendly, and the food didn't take too long to come at all, and was *very* tasty. It's a small bar (nary 8-10 tables and a bar) so if it's a game night you *will* need to consider getting in early.
If you're on U Street early evening, it's definitely worth a visit for the food and chilled out atmosphere -- not to mention the myriad HDTVs!
My boyfriend and I came here to watch the first game day of the European championship and had a great time. There was plenty of seating and the crowd was jovial, despite rooting for different teams.
Neither my boyfriend nor I like drinking in the afternoon, so we stuck to diet coke's that the bartender (who was really sweet) filled up numerous times for us. Although a lot of bars charge you for each soda, she only charged us for one each although we probably had 8 or 9 between the two of us.
Appetizers were half-priced. They were decent enough - we had nachos and wings. Pretty good for bar food.
All in all, we had a great time watching the games there - lots of screens and a good crowd although enough space to still feel spread out. We spent over two hours there and left full with a bill less than $20.
I had the pleasure of attending Momo's grand opening party last night. And from what I experienced, this new U Street spot is pretty hot.
Momo's is what you might call a sports LOUNGE. Sure, they've got plenty of flat screens to ensure you won't miss the game, but the vibe on the second floor is loungey enough to consider it for catching up with friends on the comfortable leather couches. The third floor is for VIPs, and if you manage to get up there you'll find more flat screens but in a smaller, more intimate space.
While beer is the de rigueur beverage ($2.50 domestic beers and $10 pitchers on Saturday, Sunday and Monday nights), I would be remiss if I did not tell you about the Momotini! This drink made my Tuesday night!
THE VERDICT: Pile into the first floor if you're wanting to cheer your team on with other fans, but head upstairs to the second floor if you want a loungier atmosphere. The good news is, both floors have bars, so you'll never go thirsty at Momo's.
Momo's was absolutely empty last Saturday night, but I don't think it will be that way for long.
I decided on Momo's as the place to host a birthday for our very own sports nut, Craig R. I wanted a place where he'd be comfortable surrounded by plasma but at the same time had a little something beyond the average sports bar. Momo's fits that bill perfectly. It's the only sports bar that I would also describe as swank and upscale. The decor is nice and well thought out and my guess is that it will improve with age. We were able to lounge, talk, and watch the games simultaneously, which was great.
The food was pretty good and prices were fair. Our bartender was fantastic, but that could be due to the fact that we had her all to ourselves. I'm pretty sure the shots she made me were double the size they were supposed to be.
The next time I'm out with my guys who just want to watch sports I'll be sure to recommend Momo's. That way we can all be happy, and that's quite a feat.
I don't go out to bars often (not my kind of scene) and I'm not a huge sports fan (in comparison to my crazy diehard Eagles/Mets/Georgetown DH), but I did enjoy watching a game at Momo's on Sunday afternoon. I didn't know that Momo's had three floors, but we went up to the bar on the second level.
I wa impressed with Momo's. The bar wasn't one bit of a dive. It seemed rather new and modern for being a sports bar. The downside is that space was very limited, seats were uncomfortable, and the food prices were high (that's to be expected though). They had plenty of tv's tuned to different games. However, not all games used the same receiver, so one game would be five seconds ahead of the same game on another screen.
The service was very good at the second floor bar. None of the staff had attitudes, which I experience quite frequently when I do go to bars. I didn't pay for drinks, but from reading previous Yelp reviews on this place, drinks aren't that expensive. I would probably go back to Momo's when the Mets start playing in April. I think there will be less hostility there than at the new Nationals' stadium.
I thought that Momo's was great! I came here to watch UCLA in the first round of the NCAA tourney and I would definitely go back. They have every size flat screen tv you could ever imagine. You can't go wrong with 3 floors of flat screens and a bucket of PBR for $15.
A loungy sports bar...is there such a thing? Yes there is. It's called Momo's.
The first floor is great for grabbing a bite to eat, but the second floor is where you should go to lounge around with friends on their comfy (low to the ground) leather sofas and not only watch the games on plasma TVs, but actually listen to them too!
There is a bar on the second floor and since our group of Yelpers were the only ones there, it felt like we had our own VIP party for Craig R.'s birthday celebration. Who needs the special third floor VIP lounge!
The drinks are strrrong! Half Ketel One/half cranberry juice. Thank you Jazz, the heavy-handed bar keep. You're a real gem! I don't know exactly what the prices for those knock-you-back drinks were since I didn't get an itemized bill, but it was somewhere around $7 each.
Food choices are regular bar food items and reasonably priced. Those who ate here didn't complain.
Cafe Nema still owns this place, but the new atmosphere is refreshing and a welcome change to the U Street Corridor.
This is a pretty interesting venue and a very good neighborhood pub. I've watched many a game at Momo's. The place is tight, usually packed, but they have multiple floors and plenty of TV's to boot. I met a bunch of friend for dinner and sports watching an the staff catered to our needs. We needed to be able to watch 3 different games and the staff set each of us with a different tv. Fun place to watch the games and socialize.
Maybe it was just because the place was filled with mouth-breathing Philadelphia Eagles fans who cheered when one of the NY Giants got hurt but I was pretty unhappy with Momo's. I had a hard time getting a menu and when I did get a menu I thought the prices were pretty ridiculous. $11 for an inadequate burger is not cool. The bartender also told me that the special was a bucket of five Heinekins for $15. I bought a bucket then realized that I was charged for a bucket of Coronas which was $18. After ordering it took a good 30 minutes to get our food. I will grant that the plates were big and full but the food wasn't anything to write home about. And I can't imagine finding a place with more TV's in a small amount of space. I might go back but only because it's not far from my place or to hang out with friends.
3.5 stars. Came here last week to watch a World Cup qualifier. The place has three levels but I only survey the bottom two. It's definitely a sports bar, plenty of teevees and testosterone. I hung out on the bottom floor with Walter the bartender--wonderful man who gave us free shots. When some more of my friends came, we went to the second level where th game was showing. Be Warned: get there early, like 90 minutes or so, if you intend on getting a table for friends. There were plenty of squatters wrangling chairs for phantom friends. By the time the game started the place was packed . . . but it never got uncomfortable. I went to the top level once to use the restroom. 1) the top level is full of couches and is kind of like a clubhouse hangout. 2) the bathroom is unisex. 3) just because most of the people on the top level are your friends, it doesn't mean you don't have to close the door when your draining your main vein, or whatever you guys say these days.
As for the food, it was pretty standard bar food. I got the chili and it was super meaty, which I love. None of those stupid vegetables and beans gettin in the way.
Overall, a positive experience. would go there again.
Momo's is new and still hasn't formally celebrated a grand opening. They have 16 plasma TVs, live entertainement a few days a week, 2 bars, a VIP room in the works, and is putting in Nintendo Wiis for slow sports nights. The owner, Dale, also owns a 5 star catering business in Miami so as soon as the kitchen is officially opened for a full menu, the food ought to be pretty awesome - I've sampled a few things there and all were fantastic and exactly what you want at a sports bar.
The six couchesupstairs are a perfect place to catch a game with friends. Comfy and cool. The prices are so reasonable that you won't mind drinking from the bar vs. a 12 pack on your own couch. Momo's is exactly what a sports bar should be but still embraces its lively and eclectic U St surroundings.
This is a relatively new bar - open less than 2 months. The drinks are relatively cheap ($3), but there is no specials or happy hours (although they tell me that they are working on that). I've only seen one waitress, but she is nice and friendly. Willing to chat.
Momo's venue is pretty nice! The main floor (on the 2nd story) is not huge, but has 8 to 10 HDTVs always playing different sports activities. Upstairs are more HDTVs, including a big screen. Also upstairs are plenty of sofas and an additional bar. It'll hold a surprisingly large amount of people all able to see the games.
Occasionally, they have live music or show a boxing fight...both of which are very popular.
Food is not particularly good or cheap, but they have the basic sports bar menu. I just had the fries, but wished I had gotten the onion rings.
If you get to Momo's early enough for your game... it is a fantastic place to watch, socialize, and get completely hammered. I love it. And I love that there's a sportsbar on U Street.
Drinks aside, Momo's has fantastic BBQ ribs! Who'd-a-thunk-it? Try 'em...
I had the pleasure of heading here with friends for my birthday and I was not disappointed by Momo's. There are three floors to the bar and each has its own unique style to it. However, I didn't get a chance to check out the third floor so my review covers only the first and second.
For a sports bar, this place is decked out with comfortable couches and it looks extremely modern. Most of the time you wouldn't figure a sports bar to be aesthetically pleasing, but Momo's is just that. The first floor has a bar atmosphere where you can come watch a game and really get into it. It has a bigger bar and some really nice HD TVs. The second floor has more of a lounge atmosphere so if you want a place to relax while still watching the game, this floor has it. The bar is a little smaller than downstairs, but they have all of the same alcohol so there isn't much difference. The best part about the second floor is that they turn on the sound to the game. That's what makes a sports bar a sports bar.
Even though when we were there the place was empty, we still had a great time. Our bartender made some of the stiffest drinks I've had in awhile. Thank you! The food was incredible. They have quite a selection on the menu and I chose to have a cheeseburger. This wasn't your normal fare. The burger was made like a home-made burger thrown on a grill in the back yard. Topped with lettuce, tomato, onions and a kaiser roll, I was set.
For important games you'd better believe I'm heading back here for the action.
Basically everything you need for a quality sports experience. Lots of TVs, friendly service.
We went on a Wednesday to watch a game and the place was moderately crowded with a fun, mixed crowd. Service was excellent.
Only downside would be that the beer is a bit expensive.
3.25 stars. This bar would be fine, but for the clientele. But unfortunately, this place somehow always seems to bring forth the most completely douchebag fan type - the right out of college, uneducated about their own team, more concerned about trying to start a fight with the other team's type of "fan". Seriously, it's like the McFadden's crowd for sports. You simply don't want to be around these people. I've been here where a Detroit fan was literally trying to argue EVERY call on the way to his team going down 25 points; I've been here when an idiot Denver fan was more concerned with yelling at two rather quiet Cleveland fans than supporting his own team. It doesn't matter. I have no issue with people supporting their team or even engaging in some trash talk, but when you are only trying to instigate a fight, which has been the case multiple times that I have been here, it's a problem. And it's really unfortunate because...
The crazy thing is that everything else about this bar is great. I have never had any qualms about the service, the TVs are excellent, the bar is smart enough to buy the NFL Network and college football package (so they will have your game), they have an EXCELLENT website, and their food is much better than competitors (see Vettnor's or Nelly's). Yet I still can't get past the clientele. I'm hoping it has just been a major coincidence because I really do like everything else about this place and it seems like no one else that has reviewed this place has had this same issue here.
Momo's is by far the best sports bar I've been to in DC. They will put on whatever you want to watch, the guys are all real friendly, and its not corporate like Buffalo or Rocket Bar. Oh, and all their tvs are HD, flat screens. Seriously, why do some places still have CRT, standard def tvs anymore? Its almost 2010.
I am a big fan of this sports LOUNGE. It fills in a sorely needed spot (sports bar) on U Street with a refreshing approach...beautiful flat screen tvs everywhere your head looks; a laid back interior perfect for sitting and having a meal, or lounging and having a beer. The drinks are enormous and strong, and the owner is super-cool and there to please. He also set up a Playstation 3 for his customers, which I thought was pretty sweet.
The only thing they're missing is dessert, though Im sure if enough people ask for it, he'll be happy to add it to the menu.
Im particularly impressed with the chicken wings, which are some of the best I've had.
Yay Momo's! I'm so happy to see that they are doing well - they underwent a serious renovation in the last year and things are looking/sounding/tasting great. For game time, there are tons of TVs on all those great stations that I don't want to pay for at home. At night, the music can get a little crazy-loud, but the crowd and drinks are good. The bar in the same building in the basement - Cafe Nema - has an even more relaxed vibe (same good drinks) and has a great DJ from time to time. =)
Was in town for Mem Day Wknd. Researched that this place had 25 LCD TVs and 2 levels so I had to check it out. Caught Game 3 of Lakers vs Spurs here. We ordered the Caprese (dubbed Tomato & Mozarella Salad) and 20 Wings. The wings were nice and meaty, with a sweet glaze that wasn't too overpowering. It worked since I'm not a fan of tangy buffalo sauce (way too tart). Everyone else was a college student that just came to the sports bar to drink. Red Stripe was $3 all night. The service was great and friendly. We left a 33% tip for the warm hospitality. Upon exiting, we noticed huge mobs of college students roaming the streets. On my way back, the cabby told me that U St is becoming quite the up and coming social scene. Whatever the case, the Lakers still got blown out so HUMBUG!
Go-to neighborhood sports bar. Lots of Longhorn fans congregate here, as well. Food is good - especially when they get it from Cafe Nema downstairs. Can't beat the service - the bar staff are our friends now. Great place and ample numbers of TVs - hugely important.
Momo's is the perfect spot to grab a beer, eat some good food and watch a game. They have 15-20 HDTV's on the first floor, plus more upstairs.
