Came here a while back but I can't remember exactly why we haven't been back since. I'm not gonna say we're getting older and more forgetful cuz my husband is always telling me that we're only as old as we feel. Maybe, that's another reason for Yelping , huh... our public diary. Anyway, I guess we've been to so many sushi bars lately that they're all starting to run together. One thing that we did remember was that they let us walk in for lunch at 2:55pm (we didn't know they closed at 3pm) and let us eat so we were thankful for that.
So, we came back again to refresh our memory. Surprisingly, this place was still packed at almost 10:00 on a Sunday night! The service was good, except our tempura appetizer came out a litter bit AFTER our sushi entrée. The tempura sauce is boiled with ginger, nice flavor I give them that, but the sushi was just o.k.
Now we remember why... because it is just A- O.K.
It's behind IHOP on 183. I went there for their Sun-Thu half price sushi.
After sitting down for 10 minutes, we didn't get the waitress' attention. Finally the hostess brought us drinks. Waiting for 5 minutes more, our waitress showed up and I ordered dragon roll, rainbow roll and sweet potato rolls.
Their sushi rolls are between $2-$6. Very good price for a Japanese restaurant. But the sushi size is a little bit smaller.
Kid soda is only $1.
After the meal, I had to wait for 10 minutes to get the waitress again.
For food price, I will give it 4 stars. For services, I will give 2 stars. So average is 3 stars.
Oooo, I loves me some Tuna Poke. Never had it until last nite and btw, Poke is pronounced like okay, NOT like I will poke you with my chopstick if you come near my Poke. My daddy used to go down to the creek behind my house and pull up some poke weed for a salad (no, we are not hicks...this was central Dallas). THIS is NOT THAT, thank goodness. This is sweet fresh raw tuna and tomatoes and seaweed sittin, soakin in a martini glass with the most delectable spicy, citrusy sauce (Poke). Chopsticks did not get that in my mouth fast enough. Please serve with a soup spoon next time :)
We also once again indulged in the super cheap rolls of which I am a big fan of the spicy tuna and the rainbow roll. As always we go with the plan to have a cheap dinner but add some wine and our salads, we still spent a bunch. I just noticed they deliver too so maybe we'll do that next time and drink our cheap ass Mondavi wine at home. Ooo please deliver the Poke!

If you are looking for supermarket quality sushi at high prices then you have found the place.
I suppose if you go for happy hour it might look like good value. But "bargain prices" and "sushi" should not be used in the same line. Ever!
My boyfriend and I went here the other night because of all the good reviews and we were thoroughly disappointed. We originally came here for some good hibachi and sushi and left disgusted and unsatisfied.
We started off with 5 different sushi rolls: a crunchy roll, spicy tuna, spicy yellow tail, and an Alaska roll, which were all recommendations from our waitress. We also got some yellow tail sashimi, which to be fair tasted fresh. Although the rolls were very inexpensive, they were gross. Our spicy tuna roll ended up being just a tuna roll, nothing spicy about it. We never got the spicy yellow tail which I'm actually grateful for. As for the other rolls, they were sub-par to any that you would find in your local grocery store. And if our dining experience wasn't bad enough there was a long, dark black hair stuck to the bottom of one of the rolls, DISGUSTING! After seeing that, I sent the rest of the plate back and we decided to try our luck with the hibachi.
We ordered steak and shrimp and It was worse than the sushi. Seriously, we both had one bite of the steak and neither of us went back for more. Everything had a weird chemical aftertaste. It's hard to describe but we both tasted something inedible. The fried rice was worse. Not to stereotype but I'm Asian and I've NEVER turned down rice. I just love it! It's one of my favorite things. I took one bite and refused to eat any more. I couldn't pin point the taste so I smelled it and had to put it at the end of the table. It had sort of gym sock smell to it.
Now the service was ok. The wait staff was nice. The only complaint I have is that the Crunchy roll, the roll with the lovely long hair in it, was still on my bill. I couldn't believe it. I had to ask the waitress again to take the roll off my bill. To her defense she went to the manager and had it taken off but I felt that it should have been taken care of prior to any second complaints.
On another note, the cheap sushi is cheap. Some days it $3 a roll. After everything was said and done our bill was $47 for two people. My boyfriend had one beer but come on....... it's not that cheap. Go somewhere else.
All in all I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone unless they wanted to go for some cheap mediocre sushi. Even then I would recommend saving your time and your money and go to your local grocery store. They probably have better sushi for a dollar or two more and it doesn't come with hair or chemicals.
We went for the happy hour. 1/2 price sushi and we had dessert which was ICE SCREAM, tempura fried ice cream with candy corn and sponge cake with whip cream...yummy!!
Our bill was 32 something for 4 rolls , drinks and dessert which is not bad at all. Customer service is good and the place is clean. As a vegetarian I had the vegetable roll and cucumber which was decent. It is so hard to find a sushi place here in Austin that will make you whatever you want (if you know of one let me know!) I am used to tempura fried sweet potato with spicy jalapeno sauce on top lol
Almost 5 stars. They have great rolls for the best prices I have ever seen. Wife and I went last night and they have tons of $3 specials. Enough on the special menu to even make the kids happy. We are so impressed that we are going again tonight.
Very friendly staff as well.
Eat there and be happy.
I first saw Momiji not too long after it opened and was hemming and hawing over whether or not to give it a shot. I LOVED vegetarian maki rolls and I like hibachi, but... dude. It's in a strip mall. Right next to Lowe's. Really now?
When I made an appointment with a colleague, she suggested we meet at this joint and I thought, "okay, why not?". I was still leery so I ordered hibachi, but my companion was nice enough to let me try her tuna and salmon rolls. And whaddya know - I like raw fish maki rolls too. In fact, I like them a lot. I'm now obsessed with this place.
I will admit that their hibachi is nothing to rave over. It's just okay. I didn't care for the sushi or the sashimi, but that's probably more my own preferences (plus I'm still a bit of wimp about raw fish, the rolls I can handle). But their rolls are wonderful, the prices are incredibly reasonable (I can get out of there for $20 for 2 for lunch!), and the waitstaff are polite and accommodating.
I've been back a lot. No, I don't think you understand. I could live there happily and return several times per month. Luckily, I find I prefer the healthier rolls so I don't feel like I'm overdoing it, but given a chance, I take anyone I can find there. Everyone is always impressed. The restaurant itself is pretty understated, there's not a lot of noise or music and the decor is light. I have a hard time hearing in places with a lot of white noise, so this is perfect.
Check out the menu on their website at http://www.eatmomiji.com - half price rolls Monday-Thursday and great lunch specials. Heck, even specials on weekend nights.
My kids will also go here. My daughter likes the shrimp-asparagus roll and my son likes the fried rice. The waitstaff is always great with them. The last time I dined there with my son, the waiter gave him the kid chopsticks for his rice. I looked at him a little like he must be nuts, but my son did okay with it and when I left, apologizing to the waiter for the mess, he said "nope, it's on me, I knew what I was getting into." - he still got a big tip. I always tip well here, they are always wonderful and I appreciate good service.
I have been yelling from the rooftops about this place in hopes they stay open. They appear to be doing a very good business so yippee!
Go here - and invite me along :)
I would give them 5 stars, but the "just okay" hibachi loses 1 star :) I also wish they had a standard fare for kids - grilled cheese and chicken strips (not the katsu stuff - kids know the difference), but of course, I'm lucky that my kids like this place as is :)
A tip: if you ask nicely and they have it available, they will grind you up some fresh (aka real - the real stuff is infinitely better than the "fake" stuff) wasabi for a small extra charge.
Oh Momiji, I knew that one day the half price sushi would be gone but it still makes me sad. Sunday -Thursday are now "special price sushi" nights. It's still cheap but... not as cheap :)
Our bill last night-
Tuna roll - $4.00
Salmon roll - $4.00
Philly roll - $4.00
Salmon sushi (2) - $2.75
Tuna sushi (2) - $3.00
Escolar sushi (2) - $2.75
Also our tuna roll had chopped tuna in it which isn't as good as a solid piece. The salmon roll wasn't chopped so maybe it's not normal practice and they were just running low on whole pieces of tuna last night?
They do still have lots of $20-$25 bottles of wine though!

The wine is now $6.50 a glass but you can still get a bottle for $20 so that works out ok :)

It's all about the sushi. I have tried every place in town and this place stands out for quality and price. The atmosphere isn't anything special but the sushi is really good, realllllllly good. Did I mention the price? I admit I was a bit trepidatious about so called half prices sushi. This would normally make most sushi fans run screaming with their hands above their head.
But they not only pull it off but have me wondering why I would go anywhere else for a sushi fix. I'm alway's hesitant about giving Five stars but when you finish eating and already start thinking about coming back thats what five stars is all about. It's not a place to try to impress a client or friend but it is a place to get your sushi on.
They have recently switched their menu to only offer half prices Sunday- Thursday but they still have good deals on the weekend.
I'm not sure who their supplier is but the fish was fresh, no smell, and cut thick.
This would be my idea of a stereotypical strip mall restaurant. Not much atmosphere, decent but not great food at a good value.
For lunch we tried the shrimp shumai, beef negimaki, seared ahi tuna, seaweed salad, seafood ceviche, and golden wall roll. The seaweed salad, seared ahi tuna, and seafood ceviche were good. The shrimp shumai were lacking in shrimp, the beef negimaki lacking in beef. The soft shell crab in the golden wall roll was not freshly cooked.
Service was good, except for oddities like their taking water and tea away to be refilled rather than using a pitcher. You can hear them filling up the water glass with tap water, a pitcher would remind you less you were drinking tap water. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
affordable sushi, thanks to their dine-in half price deal (non-weekend nights). worth trying. not big on atmosphere (strip mall) or imagination, but you definitely get what you pay for. the escolar is mouth-watering, and the rolls are tasty. service was a bit off - once we were seated we waited forever before a waitperson showed up. we actually contemplated walking out...but were glad we didn't because when he finally arrived, he couldn't have been nicer and more attentive, and the first thing he did was apologize. it's in our hood, so we'll be returning for sure. not sure it is worth a special trip up north, unless you're broke, not overly picky, and have a sushi craving that won't be denied.
I gave 4 stars for the value of its happy hour sushi! I mean for $3 a roll (spicy tuna/salmon, alaska roll, etc.) and $5 for dragon/caterpillar.. it's cheaper than grocery store sushi!!! The nigiri sushi was around $2-$2.5 per 2 piece. The only catch is you have to finish what you order, if you take leftovers home, you have to pay the regular price.
And they're not bad either. We ordered way too much today. 9 rolls for 3 people, and the total bill came to be $35 + tax, and we were stuffed!! Last week we had sushi at another restaurant and we spent $60+ for 2 people, which I guess is pretty normal. The quality is of course different, but it's not fair to compare them seeing how low the price is.
This place has pretty good sushi for a really good price. I had a nice experience here with some friends and am looking forward to going back. We left stuffed and happy!
I had been meaning to try this place the next time I was required to go to Lowe's. Hit it just right, walked in on a Saturday shortly after 5 and took advantage of the specials. 3 buck california roll, 3 buck spicy tuna and I was outta there with my sushi craving fulfilled and my wallet barely noticed the diff.
Will be back for another quickie real soon.
Very good sushi here! I had about 28 pieces of fish for 39.00 (sashimi)
The service was great, The portions were large. I will be back for sure.
It's not terrible.
Translation = It could be worse, it could be better.
For $22 (pre-tip), we got 4 rolls of sushi, edamame, and a drink. Not too bad.
Obviously, this isn't top grade sushi, but if you're looking for a quick and cheap sushi fix, I think Momiji's is a good choice. It falls somewhere between Whole Food's sushi and some place like Osaka or Odaku.
Their sushi is half-off Sunday-Thurs in the evening, so I thought it was worth it to try it out.
I've eaten here at least a half dozen times now. I think the restaurant is finally starting to hit its stride. What started as an order-at-the-counter and serve-yourself-your-own-drinks place is now a sit-down casual Japanese restaurant. The format of the lunch specials has changed a few times, but seems to have stabilized into a nice selection lately.
Most of the food is very good. I especially like the seafood yakisoba. My new favorite lunch option is the bento box with beef negimaki. The bento boxes at lunch include shumai, which is unusual, but I like shumai and these are very tasty, so it's OK. The sushi I've tried is always very pretty and seems to me to be at least as fresh as what the other Japanese restaurants in the area serve. The only thing I've been disappointed with was the hibachi chicken - the one time I tried it, it arrived overcooked.
The restaurant is in an awful location, unfortunately. It is in the shopping center at the southeast corner of US 183 and SH 45, near the IHOP and the Office Depot. It's really hard to see the restaurant from the frontage roads, and it's in a portion of the shopping center that is easy to forget about.
We live and work nearby so we stopped in for lunch this week and were pleasantly surprised. We both ordered the sushi lunch so each got a piece of tuna, salmon, escolar, shrimp, and yellow tail, as well as a hand roll and our choice of rolls. I had the crunchy roll and my girlfriend had the yellowtail roll and the lunch came with the usual bowl of miso soup.
All of the fish was fresh and tasty and the yellow tail, which is not my favorite, was actually great because it was seared. There was also seared yellow tail in the hand roll.
We got some mango and vanilla mochi for desert and it was tasty too.
The staff was very friendly and told us that that have 1/2 price sushi for dinner from Sunday through Thursday so we said we would be back to try dinner and all of the rolls on the menu that sound interesting.
The decor was neat and it was nicer and larger inside than we thought it would be so we like it and look forward to reporting back on our dinner experience.
I love this place. We've been here several times now and have had great service every time. Never had to wait for a table, service is prompt and friendly, and the food is very good. I've only gotten sushi there but the menu is quite extensive and I hope to try some more of their dishes soon.
I took my hubby there by force because I wanted something relatively healthy, and I am half japanese, so I want him to try the foods I grew up on.
Every time I had tried to get him to try sushi (even INARI, aka Football sushi) he would make a face before taking a bite, then spit it out immediately. Momiji converted him.
The first roll he tried was the Rock and Roll, a tempura fried roll, since he claimed that the nori was always the thing that turned him off when he bit into most sushi, "forcing" him to spit it out. The frying softened the nori so he didnt really notice it when he bit into it, and he loved the taste of the roll paired with the wasabi and mango sauces drizzled over the slices. It paired nicely with our hibachi entrees and our tempura calimari (huge rings!). When we left, he immediately said he was hooked and wanted to go again.
We returned 2 weeks later for half price sushi for our anniversary. We ordered about 6 different varieties in addition to the rock and roll and pretty much ate that for dinner. After his first experience, he realized that nori is actually quite tasty when paired with a good filling, so he was more than willing to try each one! The trick is, I found, to not tell him what it is until he says he likes it... he seemed to like the spider roll the most! I just enjoyed eating food that tastes like my Bachan's cooking, as opposed to the korean and vietnamese-style "japanese" restaurants, and the stale, bland (and often questionable) buffet line sushi so often found around town. Oh, and he LOVED the concept and contents of his Bento box.
If you go during happy hour, it's a great deal. Ok sushi for a good price. Last time we went we got 6 rolls, fried rice, and 3 drinks for $30. Can't beat that.
The location isn't the greatest, but I am ok with that. Probably helps them keep the cost down. The sushi quality is adequate. It isn't the best or freshest i've ever had, but it's definately a good value if you go during happy hour (M-Th 5-close).
I went here for dinner the other day. Their happy hour (Sun-Thur 5pm-close) has to be the best value sushi in Austin. The service was great, there was no wait, and the quality of the sushi was very good, especially considering the price. I liked the rice they use too...it was less clumpy and had more flavor than I had expected. This place absolutely destroys Kyoto (downtown), which has a similarly-priced happy hour. I'll definitely be back.
I just had lunch here to see how this place fits into the sushi scene in Northwest Austin. The fish was okay, it definitely wasn't the freshest but above what HEB serves for sushi. I would recommend it as a lunch spot, but there are better within a 5 mile radius for around the same price.
I love this place! I eat here all the time. Don't get me wrong, it's not as good as Tomo, but it's not Tomo prices either. For $10, I can get an good amount of sushi for lunch and satisfy that salmon craving. :) The staff is wonderful and very friendly.
I finally checked this place out after seeing the reviews. I have to echo earlier reviewers Robert and Wei... This place is definitely a find - the HH sushi is a great deal - you can eat (er, OD on) sushi on a budget!!! Great service. We'll be back!
the happy hour menu is huge and good for the price. guess as word has spread, more people have come to learn about the happy hour and the service is slower. will come back. between good and great bang for the buck.
