I started having lower and upper back pain back in late October and started to consider seeing a Chiropractor. I felt out of balance like everything in my body was just off. I thought I needed to just be adjusted so everything was back in its right place.
I found Alexander through Yelp and also through my insurance. I always check out reviews on Yelp and then see if they're covered under my insurance.
When I arrived, I explained my symptoms and I'd never visited a Chiropractor so this was a whole new thing to me. Alexander explained what he does, what chiropractic is and how chiropractic might help with not only my current back pain, but just overall health. He was totally open to any questions I had which is nice, especially if you're a newbie like me to this type of method.
After the first adjustment, I felt ok. But I totally felt it later on that night and for the next 2 days. I hurt so much. He had recommended that I sleep with a pillow to help elevate my knees when I slept and to also make sure my neck was in alignment with the rest of my spine. He also said the best way to sleep was on my back and of course I'm a total stomach sleeper. It felt awkward at first and just odd, but I have to say I slept better, despite being super uncomfortable. Mind you, he said that I would probably feel uncomfortable since I've never been adjusted, but the pain would be less and less each session.
I went about 6-7 times and my back pain was mostly gone. My neck was also feeling so much better. I started to feel my arm go numb in late December which he said was probably a result of being on vacation for a week and suddenly going back to work for 8 hours having my body do the same motions. In a way, it went into shock. Either way, I'm happy I don't have lower back pain. The adjustments for my arm/shoulder has helped, but I think it will be an issue until my work environment changes. I'm currently visiting my physical therapist to assist with the new issue.
Anywho, he is super nice and totally puts you at ease. I'll be visiting him again soon and setting up to do a monthly adjustment as it's so nice to not feel out of wack. I didn't think chiropractic worked, but it does to my amazement.
I recommend that you avoid this chiropractor:
I saw this practitioner for minor back troubles, based on positive yelp reviews. The first few visits went ok, but then there was a visit where I felt he injured me. I tried to discuss this with him, but he largely shrugged it off. His diagnostic techniques are inadequate, in many cases there was no real diagnosis prior to treatment. He was too timid to deal effectively with the situation, and I needed his help given that my back and neck became severely worse after those sessions.
The result of treatment here was catastrophic for me. Alexander inadvertently hurt me very seriously, and his timid response to the problem resulted in my eventually sustaining crippling injuries.
A letter to Alexander describing my situation received no response Now, 4 months later, I am still severely injured and cannot walk, primarily due to the inadequate care of this chiropractor.
I've been seeing Alexander since he was in Chiropractic college. I've seen him grow and excel at his profession. These days I travel a lot and do not get to see Alexander as much but when I'm in town, I can count on Alexander to re-adjust my joints and realign me from the injuries and tightness that I have built up.
I recently got injured a few months ago during snowboarding. I had a severe whiplash on my neck and in just one session he made the stiffness go away! His cold laser treatment also helped the shoulder pain I had.
After so many years of putting my body through so much, I can't do without Dr. Khanin's monthly adjustments. He truly makes the pain go away! He is a person of integrity and someone you can trust. I definitely recommend seeing him time and time again.
He got the magic hands. Every time I feel pain in my back, I am not worried. I know where to go. Dr. Alexander Khanin loves what he does and I can feel the results. Being a professional photographer, I put a load on my back from equipment I carry and use and in the evenings I usually either very tired or in addition to it, sometimes, I have minor back pain. Dr. Khanin taught me a technique to reduce that pain which I use almost every time I am back from a job and it helps a lot. He literally "saved" me few times (couldn't move) and since then (more then two years) I feel better.
Dr. Khanin not only a 1st class professional, he is really nice guy and knows to listen to your problems. You'll never feel, he is in rush for another client.
Helping others is his obsession. I can highly recommend Dr. Khanin.
Also, he partners with very good massage therapist. Used one in June 2008 and feel like new...

I met Dr. Khanin through a friend of mine, who raved about how awesome of a chiropractor he was. I decided to give him a try because he lived in my neighboorhood, and he was walking distance from my house. Good start.
He is quite amazing! Fixed me right up. I am a massage therapist and I always give better massages when I'm not in severe pain. He makes it so I'm not in pain. I love him, and my clients do too!! Yay!!
I've also referred quite a few people to him, one who I ran into at a social function, and she said he "changed her life". That was awesome!! When she came to me she was all crooked from a old injury, and I knew that my massages wouldn't hold as long as she was so out of whack. It works good when all of us healers work together, right?
Dr. Khanin rocks. Belize that.
I recently saw Dr. Khanin a couple days after I crashed my car.
I arrived in a state of nervous exhaustion, nausea, disorientation -- and had an aching head that I feared might be from a concussion.
Once, when I lived in L.A., I was referred to a chiro when I threw my back out while trying to finish a final draft of a screeplay that had been optioned for megabucks. Throughout the chiro session, the "doctor" never shut up about his screenplay ideas. And he made jokes about my pain.
So just let me say, Dr. Khanin is the OPPOSITE of that. He is not insensitive, boorish, self-centered, or prone to displays of goofy greed.
He is a brilliant (a 2000 graduate from the prestigious Palmer College of Chiropractic West), genuinely caring, gentle chiro who really listens.
And don't let the ponytail and quiet, gentle manner fool you -- the man can crack your neck, straighten out your vertebrae and perform the nearly acrobatic bio-cranial adjustments with the best of them!
He's just not a Chatty-Cathy type who needs to ask about my personal life or tell me about his.
In Los Angeles, I saw chiropractors more often than my dentist, so I get that chiropractic can be approached as a superficial "body" adjustment to alleviate bone or muscle pain, or it can be viewed more holistically (seeing how the body-mind-spirit trio is interconnected).
Dr. Khanin offers a blend of the two approaches, and seems to tailor according to a patient's preference.
To enhance the sessions, he also offers Cold Laser Therapy (used by pro athletes for peak performance, and can also help specific ailments, such as chronic liver problems, etc.).
Oh, and how am I now? Well, I've had 2 of the 4 visits we've scheduled, and the headache was gone on Day One. I felt clear and present right after the first session.
I walked into the next session a few days later not feeling well, but Dr. Khanin advised me that I pushed too hard right after the first session. So now I'm resting, breathing, watching my posture, per his instructions, and can feel my energy returning.
Dr. Khanin also donates his services to Glide Memorial Church Health Clinic, and has gone on missions to El Salvador. Now that's dedication. I wonder if he's writing a screenplay?
I felt the need to break the string of 5 stars that Dr. Khanin is getting. I don't like writing negative reviews, but when it comes to yanking on people's spines, doing something unhelpful has pretty dire consequences.
To be fair, I do not have proof that Dr. Khanin's adjustment caused my problem, but the timing was suspicious.
The short story: due to a childhood whiplash injury, since my early 20s, I have suffered from occasional (4 times a year) neck spasms, in which I move my head in an innocuous way, have a sharp pain in my neck, and then all the muscles lock up and I basically can't move my head in any direction without pain. For the last 3 years, I've gone to another chiropractor, in Berkeley. He's helped me immensely, giving me exercises to do at home to self-treat to an extent when things feel a little "off." But it is such an inconvenient trek from the Inner Sunset that I decided to try a local chiropractor.
I visited Momentum Chiropractic for the first time a week ago, Friday, for an hour-long consultation and adjustment. The neck adjustments he gave me created more "sensation" than the ones I had been getting. Saturday, I was fine. Sunday, I woke up and started doing neck exercises that I've done for 3 years, which my other chiropractor recommended. As I turned my head from side to side, I could hear clicking (unusual), so I stopped. Within 5 minutes I was in the worst neck pain I'd had since getting the original whiplash. (I have never been in WORSE condition in the aftermath of an adjustment.) I literally could do NOTHING but yelp and groan my way around the house and watch TV to distract myself. I cried myself to sleep eventually. It was very bad. I went back to Dr. Khanin Monday morning for an emergency adjustment, and he gave me a couple of very gentle adjustments. I experienced no relief (no worsening either) in the ensuing hours.
Because the pain was so bad, I made an appt with an MD (and got percoset and a muscle relaxant) and my old chiropractor for Monday afternoon. My old chiropractor gave me his usual-seeming adjustments and I experienced relief over the next two hours (though I was still in enough pain to need to take the meds later that night...which I was very unhappy about because I'm pregnant). I have since returned to my old chiropractor 2 more times, each time with more relief, and, about a week after the problem started, I'd say I'm 80% better.
I was a bit sheepish explaining that I'd gone to another chiropractor, and he said that that was fine and understandable, but that someone who doesn't x-ray your spine and then proceeds to manipulate it is just operating blind. (My chiropractor took a full set of x-rays of my spine 3 years ago before touching me.) Perhaps having no x-rays is fine for some chiropractic treatment. For me, it was disastrous.
To Dr. Khanin's credit, he called to follow up on Wed, see how I was doing, and ask how my old chiropractor had treated me in an effective way.
Until last month I had only a vague idea of what chiropractic was. After my experience with Momentum Chiropractic I am now a believer!
I woke up one morning in April with a pain in my hip, and by the middle of the morning it grew into a severe, debilitating, mind-bending pain that extended all the way down my leg. In two days I couldn't put my weight on that leg at all. I felt completely helpless.
They say married men live longer, and that's because there's an outside observer to blow the whistle and say, "You need help NOW."
I was a total wreck when I met Dr. Alex Khanin. My first impression was that this guy really knew what he was doing. Alex was very patient, and listened to my whole story without judgement. His active listening, professional demeanor, and confidence brought me back to earth. After letting me finish in my own time, Alex did something I have rarely seen any doctor do: he told me what chiropractic was, what we were going to do together, and what I could expect from the therapy.
After the first session I was walking, and the pain left for about 12 hours. After the third session I was feeling nearly normal. Now I'm officially healed and we're down to maintenance, which means coming in once a month for a tune-up. While I was living in pain I promised my body that I would take care of it from now on, so this is a good thing.
Thank you Alex, you are THE MAN! I am forever grateful.
I had the worst neck and upper back pain from all the sitting and reading that I do for school that I finally decided to do something about it. Dr. Khanin identified it as a muscle problem, did some deep-tissue work on my back, shoulders and neck, and gave me tips on stretching, posture and sitting properly. A few days later, I noticed a huge difference. A week later, the pain was almost gone. On our second visit, Dr. Khanin did more deep tissue work, and some acupuncture and ear therapy. I'm open to alternative therapies, so I love that he combines both east and west techniques in his practice.
Dr. Khanin is fantastic. Personable, extremely patient, ability to articulate information to me regarding all the techniques he has & how they work with my body. I prefer gentle adjustments. Dr Khanin was excellent in providing me with gentle work.
Dr Khanin has excellent massage therapists in the office. I have had the pleasure of a couple of massages. Very relaxing & excellent work.
Office is neat & clean, professional looking. Parking is easy in the neighborhood. Public transportation accessible.
After THREE "inconclusive" MRI's, etc............I returned to SF and found this chiropractor. He is awesome. I kinda feel like he is a modern day version of Jesus Christ, or whatever. (This comes from someone who is not particularly religious). Some people have special powers and are completely gifted. He is one, for sure..... The office is a serene sanctuary affording positive strength to anyone who enters. You can't help but feel good just walking in and seeing him. He keeps abreast of all the latest procedures, yet chooses the ones that are applicable to his version of practice. A referral from Tucson directed me initially, as he is one of the few that work with a "cold laser". Practitioners who provide this are the only ones who really care deeply about positive outcome, as it is pretty expensive to own. You gotta trust a guy who does pro-bono regularly for disinfranchised folks at Glide Memorial, as well as answering his own phone for direct contact with his clientele. I walk in like a monster-- leaving like a princess (which I am, anyway)! Can't say enough about Dr. Khanin- Try him, and you'll see. I've been to about 15 chiropractors, but none that afford the physical, spiritual and genuine goodness he can share. (Not only is he brilliant........he's awfully handsome). Rates are very reasonable, and he truly listens to your initial rantings and drama. The BEST BODYWORK DEAL IN SF!!!!!
