I want to give this place 5 stars based on the red velvet alone.  It was by far the best red velvet cupcake I have ever had... super moist, awesome frosting...
I went here yesterday and ordered two cupcakes.  The red velvet and the tiramisu (I absolutely LOVE tiramisu).  The red velvet, as I stated above, was amazing.  The tiramisu was not so great...
I could not decide between the tiramisu and the rod bennington.  I wish I had gone for the rod bennington.  On my next visit, I definitely will try it.
But thank god this place is not too close - I would be there every day.

Wowza! I walked in today at 9AM even though they werent open til noon. Lucky me, the guy at the counter was uber nice to me and let me order one of the cupcakes in the display case anyway. I chose the chocolate mousse. SUPREME. The cake was dense and moist. the buttercream was just right, not too greasy, not to sweet. It was pretty much a perfect cupcake, I must say.

Really expensive tho! $3.87/each including tax. Yikes! I'm glad I tried it though, it was delicious!

Definitely the best cupcake I have had in the city thus far. I stopped by here on a whim while in the area and had the chocolate raspberry cupcake. $3.75 and worth it. Did I just say that? What a ripoff. No wait, it is delicious!!!

Had rich chocolate ganache with a fresh raspberry on top. The chocolate cupcake itself was rich, moist and chocolaty. Aaaand there was a fresh raspberry puree injected in the middle. A-mazing. I mean, really. When is the last time you've had one of these gimmicky cupcakes and at the end was scraping the leftover wrapping with your teeth because it was so good? Try this place. It is good. And they had pretty good service, nice looking place, whatever. But the cupcake is the star.

The cupcakes are kind of small for the price you're paying, but they're pretty good. I've tried the lemon meringue, berry something, and the tiramisu... all very good (especially the fillings) -- the berry one was probably my favorite. I love that there's a large selection that is available at any given time and that it's always changing. The place itself is very cute too, with swings and stuff.. it's kind of hard to find a seat sometimes, since it's so popular, but this place is worth a visit!

Banana pudding cupcake = awesome.  Hands down, the best that I've had in three visits to Molly's.  Moist, banana-ey cake, banana pudding, and just-chocolately-enough icing.

Also, I wasn't going to mention this before, but after three visits I think that I can say that Molly's has the cutest counter staff in the city.  They're all winners.

My God in heaven.

Somebody at work brought in Molly's cupcakes for a birthday party.  The red velvet cupcake must be laced with crack because I haven't been able to concentrate on anything else since.  I'm distracted at work. I find little interest in things I used to take pleasure in.  All I can think about is my next red velvet cupcake fix.

I told my boss that my company can start paying me in Molly's red velvet cupcakes. I will actually accept them as currency.

I am still not a huge cupcake person, but many of my friends are. So I have been bringing Molly's for my friends to enjoy lately. Every time I go in there, they are super friendly and helpful. They also have new flavors all the time. I did get a mini-cupcake for myself and it was quite moist and delicious. I like the various flavors and the specialties that Molly's does like extra toppings or creative fillings.

We went here on a Saturday night so Molly's and the surrounding area was very busy.  We lucked out and were able to find nearby parking and we were able to get table.  So far so good.

I tried the Banana Pudding and the Pumpkin Spice cupcakes.  Both were moist and delicious.  A little pricey for $3.50+ for each cupcake considering they are a bit small but this is probably one of the better cupcakes I've had compared to every other place I've tried.

Apart from the cupcakes, being able to sit down and play some classic board games also makes this a great place to visit.  Nothing like a delicious cupcake to savor after an intense game of Jenga....

From Wrigley's Field to Molly's Cupcake is a bit far so we took a bus.

Molly's Cupcakes was pretty busy - the line can be long & slow.

I got just 1 cupcake & coffee.  The cupcake was the peanut butter one w/ nutella inside $3.75!  The cake is dry & hard.  I only liked the nutella inside - not much inside though & the frosting.

The Sprinkles Station is totally needed to make the cupcake a bit better.

Coffee we got was a small latte - just average.

Cute inside w/ chairs that look like swings.

Credit cards taken & you'll need it.

Not recommended.

Yes Molly's has an interesting selection of cupcakes, yes she has a cute and cozy interior.  Her cupcakes...  are nothing out of the ordinary.  In fact, at times I have found them to be a little bland.  For me, it just depends on the day.  Still, it's a cool little cafe to go and hang out with a group of friends or a laptop, just to chill and have dessert and a cup of coffee.

It had been over a year since my last visit to Molly's, so I had to make a cupcake run between films at the Landmark on Monday.

Molly's is still cute and childlike, with bright colors, googie-shaped melamine plates and friendly hipster staff. I made my choices from the tempting case and parked it to chow down on my first selection: the peanut butter Nutella cupcake.

Folks, I love me some Nutella (look at my profile: it's one of the components of my "final meal"). But this may have been too much even for me. This cupcake consisted of very airy, whipped chocolatey frosting atop a peanut-butter-flavored cupcake (the top of which was just a bit dry). Ensconced within this carapace was a huge wad of Nutella, a nugget of chocolate-hazelnut goo so big that it was hard to penetrate. I liked the idea of this one better than the execution.

I couldn't leave with just one cupcake, and I needed to have a control cupcake for comparison besides (i.e. something that I'd had both times -- science, people!), so I took the popular Ron Bennington to go, which I recalled liking on my first visit. Still good, though the frosting was fudgier than I recalled, and the crown of frosting was very tall, making it hard to bite frosting and cake in one gnash.

I will still never say no to Molly's, but between the high price and the location, it's not a frequent destination for me. All the more special when I do get there, I suppose.

Molly's Cupcakes is highly rated and the pictures online look wonderful.

Ah, deception.

Maybe I'm just not a cupcake person.  But the shop wasn't as bright and pretty as the pictures looked - way more dingy.  I only tried a little of one cupcake (a chocolate mousse), and while the cake was moist, it was nothing special.  The frosting, chocolate curls, and ganache were quite nice, though - but that's not the core of the cupcake.  What's more, these nice garnishes didn't match up with the cake itself - just somewhat off in the integration.  Maybe I just picked the wrong flavor.  Maybe it was an off day.  But I wasn't really impressed.

The toppings bar?  You only have control over sprinkles, and it's a measly 3 kinds of candy sprinkles.  The custom stuff is all done to order by the servers and has surcharges - again, not what I was led to believe in many ways.  All in all, it was disappointing, though I'd like to try a couple of other cupcakes - but I doubt my dining companion will *ever* want to go back.  *sigh* So it goes.  I can easily live without.

One word summary: disappointing.

This time I went with a group of friends later at night and it was packed!  There was a couple playing scrabble, a group of young girls in their PJs (maybe a slumber party near by?) and some women out for a birthday party.  We got to sit on the swing seats at the bar and I think they made the cupcakes taste even better.

CUPCAKES!

So, I'm a cupcake kinda gal and decided that I would hunt down the nearest cupcake joint in the area I was in. MOLLY'S it is.

Walk in. Look at menu. AH, chocolate cupcake and the option to build your own cupcake...think. think. what would go good with a chocolate cupcake? Oh yes, butter cream frosting. Hello cupcake lady...yes, can I please have choco cupcake with butter cream frosting. Thank you!

Pay. Walk out. Drive home. Sit on couch to enjoy my cupcake. Reaction on face nothing wonderful about this cupcake.

Absolutely wonderful cupcakes.
I stopped in here to get a cupcake creation for my work.  I definitely found success here.  While I didn't particularly care for the gentleman that I spoke with the women were very helpful and great.  The man offered me 3 free cupcakes because I think that he didn't quite understand what I was looking for and when he did he felt bad that he had been a little snippy.
It doesn't matter every employee in the place could be a complete jerk and the cupcakes would make up for it yummmm.

Yummmmmmmmmm!!!!  I normally do not like cupcakes, because I'm very picky about frosting and cake - I hate stuff that is too "sugary," if that makes sense.  The cupcake that I tried at Molly's, however, was PERFECT!  I can now say that I am a cupcake person - but only at Molly's :)  I had the turtle cupcake, and it was worth the $3.25 or whatever ridiculous price it was.  My cupcake had caramel filling (so good!), was really moist, and was topped with chocolate ganache (not too sweet!) and crushed pecans.  I loved it so much that I scrapped the cake part off of the wrapper so I didn't miss anything!

The husband also loved his cupcake - chocolate and raspberry.  I need to try that one next.  We will definitely be back!  Also - Toro sushi is just down the block, so it makes for a nice dinner/dessert duo!

If you want a ridiculously good cupcake, go to Molly's.  For $2, you can "build your own" cupcake by choosing the cupcake type and frosting.  I chose a red velvet with cream cheese frosting and... holy crap.  It was so perfect.  Delicious cupcake with the perfect texture and amount of moistness, and the icing was amazing - it struck the right balance between sweet and cream cheese and whipped goodness.  My Lord!  And they sprinkled little hearts all over it!  I wanted to smoosh it all over my fingers and lick it off.  I am so going back.

Oh... they have games there too.  Apples to Apples, woohoo!  ^_^

There's really  no need to state that Molly is ultra popular, but I just did anyway.  Good luck finding a seat on a weekend night.

Turn offs: frosting that is so oily, when you go to take a lick, the whole glob moves as one unit.  The fact that it'll leave an extremely greasy residue on your fingers is not appealing either.  Too. much. butter.

With tax added, cupcakes end up being over $4.  Pass.

Molly's has been my favorite cupcake destination in the city for a long time. I've tried to buy into the hype, but other places with their adventurous flavors just don't cut it. Nothing (so far) has topped Molly's baked treats - they do simple cupcakes, really well. I'll take a moist Molly's cupcake over a dry bacon maple salty caramel blah blah cake (ahem, More) any day.

My favorite regular flavors: chocolate cake with vanilla frosting and red velvet with cream cheese frosting. But honestly, everything I've had here is great, including their specialty center-filled cupcakes. The summer seasonal strawberry shortcake has a giant fresh strawberry in the middle. They do a pumpkin spice during the fall and for a MINT velvet for Christmas (I am so excited for this!). For those who can't bear the thought of eating a whole cupcake or want to try more flavors - the mini Molly's are your answers! At only a dollar each, they are a great way to try different flavors, and they're cute to boot! Actually, all the cupcakes look great. Beautifully frosted with sprinkles (the hearts on the red velvet are my favorite).

I had Molly's last year on my birthday (totally beat out the Cake Girls cake I had too), at multiple friends' birthdays, or post Thai Classic lunch buffet dessert, and just because I needed a little sugar pick up.

Last week I called in a custom order for a friend's birthday and they were great on the phone and my order was ready to pick up when I came in, all beautifully nestled in their boxes. Pretty pretty cupcake love!!!

The store is adorable but try to avoid busy times when the kids come in and scream/play with those loud robots. They have a selection of their center-filled at the store, but if you spy a cake you want to try on their website (I have the menu printed out) then you should call ahead and check... or just order a dozen (or two?) to pick up and enjoy at home. :)

Molly's was good. Not amazing, but very good. They have swings by the counter, which was really cute.

I felt like the cupcakes were overpriced considering that cupcakes at Luscious Layers cost less despite having some higher end ingredients. The flavors, though, were tasty and the area is cool. The Ron Bennington? was very good but the Tiramisu was not a dense enough cake to handle the coffee and it fell apart before we could eat it. It was moderately tasty, though. All of the cupcakes we tried had way too much frosting. I guess that's a personal preference issue but my household tends to prefer that frosting be an accent, not the key player, in our cake-y delights.

On the whole, the place is cool but I feel like it's too far away, too expensive, and not as good as some other places so I can't justify going unless I'm already in the area.

I finally went!! Yay, cupcakes!!

Went I entered I was surprised to see tables and that they had drinks. The cute little swings from the ceiling to sit on in front of the counter were original and cute. This isn't a bakery, it's a cupcake cafe.

So, the main cool thing at the cupcake cafe is that you can build your own cupcake. Get Out!!! You can pick your cake, then your frosting.  You can get toppings for a quarter or so. Being the cupcake-monster that I am, I got two. 1) red velvet, cream cheese frosting, brownie bits topping.  Ok, I wasn't really a fan of the frosting for this one, nor the cake. The cake was moist and had good quality, but both the cake and frosting were a little too tart for me.  The brownie bits were more like chunks though, which of course made me happy.   2) chocolate cake, french buttercream frosting, chocolate chips toppings.  I was very pleased with this one. The french buttercream reminded me of french vanilla ice cream.

At $2 for the regular sized cupcakes, and $1 for the poppers, I think you definitely get your money's worth.  You can also get cupcakes with filling in the center for $3.75, not my cup-o-tea though.  Better than Sweet Occasions, but doesn't top Cupcakes. However, with Cupcakes' prices and lack of beverage offering, this would be my frequent cupcake spot for when I just want a good cupcake w/a hot beverage.

Now the service was. . . .well unenthusiastic.  Luckily I was excited enough on my own to try the cupcakes because they certainly would not have made me so.  I'd like to think it was just an off day for them, but I see their not-so-great service was brought up in a previous review.

I'd recommend Molly's for your run of the mill cupcake flavors with quality. But if it's creative flavors you're craving and a happy vibe, this isn't the spot.

Cupcakes until midnight?  Add this to the long list of reasons I'm glad I live in Chicago.

Molly's was crazy busy when I arrived.  I assume it's like that every night.  But the line moved quickly and the staff was even sweeter than their frosting.  My only quibble is the general lack of seating, but how can I penalize a restaurant for being awesome and popular?

I came here a week after sampling Swirlz.  Molly's is cheaper, but still excellent.  Molly's cupcakes are very light, while Swirlz are a little thicker.  Much like Chicago's always-raging pizza battles, our city has two excellent cupcakeries... each well worth the trip, each with a long list of positives.

You can't go wrong with Molly's.  I'll be back.

In my little Southern mind....a cupcake shop? Wtf is a cupcake shop? How do they stay in business? Who would just order cupcakes when you can make them from a box?

Along came Molly's. My South African mother bought me a cupcake flight for my birthday dinner. OMG.

Love of my life: red velvet cupcake with cream cheese frosting. Enough said.

I don't typically like sweets, but every now and then I get a craving for something chocolate.

While shopping at REI the other day, I mentioned wanting a cupcake.  Another shopper overheard me and told me that I should go to Molly's.  She talked the cupcakes up so much that we decided to swing by on our way home.

The interior was less than I was expecting after having driven by so many times.  From the outside, it seems much brighter and warmer.  I do think the chair swings look cool though, and would eat inside if I could sit in a swing.

We made our selections - double chocolate and boston creme pie.  We took them to go, and the gal behind the counter asked if we would be eating them right away or not.  Knowing that we would be scarfing them down in the car, she just set them in the box instead of wrapping them better so they don't roll around and mess the frosting.

For the first time in our relationship's history, my husband and I did not share.  We were both so into our respective cupcakes that we finished them off without giving the other a sample - they're that good.

We'll be back next time a craving strikes.. which its a good thing that doesn't happen often.. otherwise we'd have weight and financial problems.

After reading Tricia L.'s reviews, I guess I got on the cupcake bandwagon.  She has to be the Chicago cupcake queen.  Anyway, gave Molly's a try.  I thought the story behind Molly's was cute, but not enough to win me over emotionally.

I tried the PB nutella, coconut, and caramel apple cupcakes.  I enjoyed the caramel apple the most, but I just felt all the cupcakes were just way too sweet for me.  Of course, you're thinking, what business do I have eating cupcakes if I can't take the sweet?!  But I found some other places that I enjoyed.   I guess I should lean more towards the savory cupcakes.

My friend Mary O. and I visited Molly's last week, when I foolishly did not order enough empanadas down the street to satisfy my middle-aged urge for a big lunch. I had a lovely, moist, melt in the mouth chocolate cupcake that I had to eat with a spoon. Typically I'd just bite into the thing, but this was so moist, a fork was necessary.

The selection of delicious cupcakes was very large. It gave me the idea of having a cupcake tasting party instead of a wine-tasting party, which I haven't done yet, but given the deliciousness of my small sample, this party idea could be a good one.

The young lady behind the counter was very nice and professional. Maybe she has started working there after some other yelper's had bad service - who knows?

The place itself is cute and neat. There was no garbage or trash out on the tables, which is a big plus in my book. Some staff member is picking up after the messy customers.

Can't give it another star because my sample was so limited, but I'd definitely go again, given the selection and good service. I do have to say, though, that paying more than a dollar for a cupcake seems extravagant, and you will definitely pay more than a dollar here.

So, my bestest friends in the entire world were in town.  And one of them is a complete nut for fun kitschy stuff.  So when she heard about this place in Chicago that had a swing and only served cupcakes, she was hooked.  So, after months of hearing about it, I jumped on board and took her and the other friend there.  Well, I'm not going to lie, normally I am not a fan of cupcakes normally.  In fact I'd much rather have a good cookie to good cake.  But, dang Molly's, I LOVE YOU!  If I could have your cupcakes every day I probably would...

Good thing your halfway across the city from me (but still dangerously close).   I had the peanut butter cupcake, with OMG -- "wait for it" NUTELLA!!!!!!!!!!!

Yup, that magic little ingredient just won my heart.

I'll be back, yum yum yum!

Tried Molly's cupcakes while in town and was thrilled with the taste of these cupcakes. I tried a berry cupcake that had real berries cooked into the yummy yellow cake and had berry icing and real berries on top. Also tried this Chocolate and  banana cupcake and that was also so good.
The only reason this place lost a star is because the staff is unfriendly and actually boarders on rude. I wanted to plan a tasting event for my job there and they were not helpful and make it seem like they don't care for the business. I would  have dropped 2 stars for the staff but the cupcakes really are that good.

Am I dreaming? This place has cured all my sugary cravings. I don't even know if that's a good or bad thing, but I can see the numbers on the scale rapidly rising and it's NOT a good feeling.
I ordered half a dozen as a gift for my hairstylist, a dozen for my cousin, one for myself and two for my immediate family. My hairstylist loved them. My cousin loved them, however, she claims that they're too sweet. (WHAT!? She's crazy), I loved my peach cobbler. My parents enjoyed theirs as well.
What I didn't like about the cupcakes was the wimpy ass filling. Cupcake makers of Molly's I hope you're reading this. We, the customers, pay $3.50 for your center-filled cupcakes. We expect a generous amount of filling for the amount that we pay. I must say that I am EXTREMELY disappointed. The mixed berry cup cake had literally, a teaspoon of jam shoved into it. Same goes for the peach cobbler. The ratio of cake to filling was just wrong. Fix it. On a brighter note, the place is cuteee! :)
I liked the seats at the coffee 'bar' (?) area. They're like swings! How romantic. Behind the counter were boxes and racks of cupcakes. How tempted was I to jump back there and scarf all those down? VERY.
The service was just okay. When I pre-ordered over the phone, the person sounded so friendly! When I got to the store the employees had this miserable cloud of sadness over them! You're working at a cupcake store... What's there to be sad about?!??
Another down side? A lot of the flavors I wanted, they happened to be out of so I was pretty upset about that. I guess that gives me a reason to go back though, huh? How could I not try the Mighty Mint and Mint Velvet?
All in all, not the best in Chicago, but I'll continue to come back.

After being pelted with some rain and still hungry after dinner, Molly's was a welcome sight.  The bright and colorful interior practically glowed in comparison to the drab and wet street.  Walking to the counter you'll see a bunch of elementary school chairs, board games, lunch boxes and other childhood entourage.

We were greeted at the counter and ordered a peanut butter Nutella cupcake, chocolate raspberry cupcake and some coffee.  These cupcakes were the 'filled center' variety.  The p.b. one had nutella in the middle of a p.b. cake with a light p.b. frosting that was dusted with cocoa.  It was enough peanut butter to satisfy this fan.  I loved the cupcake and it was rich enough to kill the craving but not big enough to get me into sugar shock (like Sprinkles or Eclipse Chocolat cupcakes in CA).  Similarly the Choc Raspberry one had a choc dipped raspberry in the center with rich chocolate cake and frosting.  It was another winner.

Molly's was a great find and is a super after dinner spot.  If you want to play a board game, you may be disappointed.  We looked at a few and they were missing pieces.  At Molly's you can't play the games of your youth, but you can relive it through the cupcakes and decorations.

The Ron Bennington, yes, now this is a cupcake. I had never had a chance to make it to Molly's Cupackes, but it was so worth it when I did. I love the decor. I love the special flavors and the filled cupcakes. I love the story behind the business. All the employees were very nice. A+!

For those in the loop in the Loop, they are now selling Molly's Cupcakes at the Fruit Flowers on Madison between LaSalle and Clark. Just in case you need your Molly's fix. :)

The "filled" cupcakes are definitely NOT worth the cost ($4+ including tax). We got the strawberry shortcake filled cupcake and it had like ONE or TWO slices of strawberry in it...This is NOT worth an additional $1.50-2 over the regular cupcakes...

In addition, we walked in around 9 PM on Saturday (tonight) and there were two guys standing in front of the cases talking to some of the employees and we couldn't look at the cupcakes to make our decision and the other employees kept asking us if we knew what we wanted! Get a CLUE people!!!

WAY over priced-bad service!

The flavor of the cupcake was nothing special either! It tasted like something I've whipped up at home (minus the strawberry slices in the middle). What a disappointment I'm never going again!

Everytime I visit Mollys it gets better and better!  How do they do it?

I was lucky enough to be visiting Mollys on a day when the Chef made her famous Cinnabunnies and Scones (out of this world! i'll never go to cinnabon again) and I was absolutely blown away.  I went back every day I was in town and I also tried the chocolate eclaire (in cupcake form), the lemon merengue (light, moist, just sweet enough), the peanut butter nutella (i never expected a peanut butter cupcake to taste that good) and of course, enjoyed more of my favorites-- the red velvet and the Ron Bennington (the king of all cupcakes and all time favorite sweet!!).

I also got there early enough to see them making some of the specialty cupcakes, and cant imagine how anyone can complain about the prices.  I watched the bakers hand dip each and every eclaire cupcake, one at time, slowly and carefully.

The truth is, if you want assembly line food, its out there.  You can go to any supermarket or chain bakery and find things that have been made quickly, uniformly, and with recipes geared toward efficiency.

But if you want something unique, made with care, and made with ingredients and techniques that are selected for the best taste, not the fastest or cheapest way to produce them, go to Mollys.  You'll definitely taste the difference.

Yum! Molly's is delicious.  I would recommend the Red Velvet, it is phenomenal.  Also, the plain vanilla and chocolate cupcakes are to-die-for.  I would never want to know the calories in one of these, but they are incredible.

So this is my fiancee's favorite cupcake stop in Chicago.  Cupcakes are her thing and we found this place to be much better than Sweet Mandy B's   I bought a dozen for my fiancee's birthday for her officemates- they were a HUGE hit.

PROs:
1.  cupcakes are a good size (some places make them a bit larger than they need to be)
2.  option of "mini" cupcakes if you want a small treat or variety
3.  red velvet with cream cheese topping is incredible
4.  when these are fresh, they remain most for at least a day.

CONs:
1.  timing is critical.  We went once late on a weekday and got slightly old cupcakes.
2.  price is high for a little cupcake joint.

MISC:
1.  they make mini-cheesecakes, cookies, and dipped strawberries if cupcakes aren't your thing.   the cheesecakes are VERY sweet.
2.  board games are fun but it gets crowded on the weekends.

I went back last night to give Molly's second chance and I was impressed!

We chose the Cookie Dough Cupcake and the Peanut Butter and Nutella.  Moist and delicious.

I can't wait to go back!

I walk by Molly's on my way to and from work regularly. Their marketing and interior are just so well done that I've been meaning to stop in to check the place out. My friend Chris and I were looking for a Scrabble venue, and I suggested Molly's.

Now, I have never been to a cupcake place so I don't know if the prices are average for cupcake places. But $3.50 for a cupcake seems a little outrageous to me. Nevertheless, I bought two cupcakes-- a tiramisu cupcake and a peanut butter cupcake with Nutella.

The tiramisu cupcake was decent. Worth $3.50? Not really, but it tasted good so...fine. The peanut butter cupcake was sort of hard and had a whole "smidge" of Nutella (which, to be honest, was the selling point for me). My friend got a small French silk pie (about the size of a quiche) which was probably the best tasting item out of everything, a little strange for a place that prides itself on cupcakes (the small pie was $5.50).

We sat down to play Scrabble and the environment was decent for a while. The radio was playing really awful country, but I was able to tune it out. Suddenly one of the workers started fiddling with the radio and changed the station about four times in fifteen minutes. It ruined our concentration and the ambience.

Two stars because I took advantage of the distractions and won the Scrabble game. Oh, and the employees are semi-friendly. That's about it.
