I tend to not believe the hype.  The more people gush about a place, the less likely it is that I'll try it.  Foolish assuredly, but what can I say, I can be a bit of a mule.

When waiting for a dance showcase at Velocity I noticed that there wasn't a soul inside Molly Moon's.  Being the anti-line girl and mildly curious about where this Seattle obsession with MM comes from, I decided to give the place a go.  My mother loved her scoop off coffee ice cream and my sundae got the job done.  I have since popped in a couple more times during mid-day and there has never been a wait and the employees are quick and courteous.

Do I think MM is worth waiting in a line around the block? Hell no.  Would I turn my nose up if a friend asks if we can pop in.  No again.  If there isn't a wait, I recommend everyone try out Molly Moon's, if only once.

The Honey Lavender Ice Cream is dripping onto my keyboard as I type!

Molly Moon's is a great ice cream parlor and has a variety of upper-end flavors like Salted Caramel, Balsamic Strawberry, Scout Mint,  and my new favorite Honey Lavender.    Their waffle cones are also amazing- not only for their flavor but the bottoms are sealed so the ice cream does not come out the bottom.

I love you Molly!

Mmmmm....

Maybe part of the draw is the always present line that snakes around the corner.

Or the small parlor, intimate feel of the place.

Or the irresistable smell of freshly made waffle cones...

Either way, this place... is delish.  Fresh, creamy goodness.

Wasn't a fan of the salted caramel, but some believe this to be better than s*x... Loved the balsamic strawberry and the mint...

Enjoy!

I hesitated before joining the crowd. I don't see myself as a revolutionary, even if a reading of Les Miserables acquainted me, at an intellectual level, with the genesis of one. However, as I surveyed the sixty seven people (at last count) standing ahead of me debating their next course of action, I felt re-assured that firing up this band of merry men (and women) would be a worthy cause. Secure with the knowledge that a mob has many heads, but no brains I raised my fist in the air shouting "YES! Let's go!"

As the group moved a few hundred yards, I heaved a sigh of relief for the procession was not, as I feared, a group of people waiting in line for ice cream at Molly Moon's... but, one searching for their next Friday night watering hole. Phew...

The gods of dessert must have been smiling on me. Having done my research, I knew that Molly Moon was popular, and her lines of ardent admirers long - but 67 would surely have been an insane number to wait behind!

Now, we all have our different yardsticks for what makes an experience truly great, but the one I've held faithful to is where laws of economics are not just challenged, they are turned completely upside down. In this case, I speak of the law of diminishing marginal utility - as applied to consumption.

I was absolutely stuffed after a delicious meal at Lola, and countless nibbles at patisseries earlier in the day. And thus, my mind was reconciled to the fact that this could only be a quick flame test to determine Molly's true colors, as opposed to a thorough 'trial by fire'. Consistent with that purpose, I decided in favor of a trinity of unorthodox flavors that could provide a ready comparison with other popular creameries of the west coast (Birite, Mitchell's): salted caramel, strawberry balsamic, and lavender lemonade (sorbet).

But, Dear Lord, once I started I simply could not stop! Just when I thought I had converted to the just desserts of gelato, over the wholesome virtues of ice cream, Molly Moon helped me rediscover my faith. I would never have expected to find an ice cream that matched the intensity of flavors that gelato is able to offer, while retaining its inherent creamy goodness, but Molly Moon was no ephemeral experience. Where else could you match up the traits of tart or salty with sweet, and not have either subjugate its natural instincts merely to co-exist?! And so, what was intended to be merely a dalliance with Molly, ended up with me being over the Moon with rapture, blasting notes of hi-fidelity to all skeptics in Seattle (fans of Old School or Fainting Goats) and unbelievers in SF (Bi-Righteous folks).

So, for all of you who are fans of the real thing: Molly Moon is it! The disbelievers will always have Paris (Hilton), er Pinkberry. Speaking of the faux-yo, I am reminded of a Sartre quote that exemplifies her cult: "She believed in nothing. Only her skepticism kept her from being an atheist."

I love Molly Moon's, don't get me wrong, but I think I am over it. I love the honey lavender or the salted caramel or the birthday cake ice cream...but the fact that I just had a kid sized cone and I feel like I ate butter, that's not good. Their flavors are amazing and unique (less so than they used to be) but I feel my throat covered in a thin layer of something. I did enjoy the staff tonight, but I think that I am over the hype. This is a weird review. Thanks for listening.

Honestly I'm more of a Fro-Yo person, but who doesn't love a rich, decadent scoop of ice cream every now and then? My boyfriend and I were lured in by the smell of fresh waffle cones being made, and walked out with a gigantic scoop of honey lavender on top of an equally gargantuan waffle cone. I probably ate about 10% of it, as it was extremely rich, but the flavour was complex enough to be appreciated even in small amounts.

I also tried the balsamic strawberry, which doesn't sound like much but oh, it was. next time i stop by i'm hoping they'll have some of their more eccentic flavours like ginger, cardamom, and/or pomegranate curry.

I asked Molly Moon's to make lavender lemonade ice cream, and they did. That's how awesome they are. Unfortunately it had way too much lemonade and hardly any lavender.

The downside is that ice cream gives me a bad stomach ache and the waffle cones tend to leak all over my hands and then down my arms and sometimes into my sleeves.

Seriously serious ice cream. Salted caramel and lavender ice cream? What?!?! Oh my god, it's good.

It's different, not like any other ice cream around. They are innovative, interesting, and the best part is I have yet to see a line around the corner at this Capitol Hill location (the Wallingford location ALWAYS has a line...dammit)

But seriously, cause I can't be serious enough - you have to try it, even if you don't do well with ice cream -  DO IT! Cause I'm the devil and what I say goes.

Why does this place insist on a making ice cream with texture that's like spongy gum? The flavors are lovely and the combinations are tasty and thoughtful. I've been four times now and while there's lots to love in the kid friendly and elegant space I can't get over the texture. It reminds me of natto, and hey, I like natto. But you know what you're in for when you get a scoop of fermented soy beans.

I wish I could give half stars, because then I'd give this place 3 1/2.  It's a bit more than "just ok" but I wouldn't say I'm a raving fan either.

I really want to love this place.  It's cute, it's got a great atmosphere, and the ice cream just sounds so interesting.  But the thing is, I feel like they're just trying to be interesting and that it kind of tries a bit too hard and falls flat.

I was given a gift certificate here for my birthday, and that's the reason I've continued to return...in hopes that it'll change my mind about the place.  But so far, I'm thinking that once my gift card runs out I'll stop returning as well.  I've had the salted caramel here, and it was just ok.  There was something off about it, and I couldn't put my finger on it.  Too salty?  Not caramel enough?  Same with the balsamic strawberry...and I usually love those flavors together.  Last visit I had the creamsicle and blackberry sage.  I was totally expecting the creamsicle to bring back memories of half and half bars...but once again it didn't quite do it for me.  The boyfriend's first comment when he tasted it was "overrated."  The blackberry sage didn't quite have the right amount of sage or something.

The only ice cream I've ever enjoyed here was the scout mint...and that's what I will use the rest of my gift card money on.

I do appreciate the attempt at trying new flavors, I just wish that instead of doing a bunch of them they perfect a few and give us something fabulous that makes my taste buds leap...rather than something interesting that makes me ponder "there's something missing..."

Yes, the ice cream is good here.  Probably great when compared to other typical shops.  Some well-done classic favorites and some fun new flavors that change often.  It's just a walk-up store with a few spots for sitting - so grab the ice cream and keep enjoying the city.

Although the one in Wallingford is quaint, and it's pretty cool to start inhaling the smell of the cones cooking before you have even made it to the door of the shop, I can't abide by the long ines.

This one is much bigger and it feels less claustrophic.  Parking can be a challenge, but every good thing has it's drawbacks!  (Yes, I did park my car across the street at the fast food place and high tail it into Molly's.  Shhh, don't get me in trouble with the law.)

Why go to a ice cream shop is more interested in being a brand than a nice ice cream shop.

The service is snotty and they purposely make you wait in lines to attract more customers.

Really 3.5

Before I die, I hope to try every famous ice cream place in the country.  So far, my progress on that is unexceptional, but I've been everywhere in the Bay Area and Los Angeles and I am preferential to that new breed of ice cream shops - biodegradable utensils and bowls, organic cream, different/exotic flavors that work.

So of course, everyone does a honey lavender these days.  However, I'd have to say, that Molly Moon's is my favorite for that flavor.  The texture on it is beautifully creamy and fluffy while still dense and the intensity of the lavender and honey flavors are overwhelming.

Salted Caramel, second flavor.  Note to ice cream and dessert establishments: STOP trying to do this for the novelty effect if you can't do it right/well!  This flavor was a complete disaster, and anyone who likes it doesn't come close to understanding what salted caramel should taste like.  Too salty!  And I live for salt!  Salted caramel should not be salty...

These flavors I feel less passionate about: blackberry sage, huckleberry, and scout mint.  The scout mint is quite nice.  The blackberry sage - the sage had no effect on me.  The huckleberry was nice and light.  However, my complaint on these last flavors are based on texture.  The texture was heavy and flaky, not creamy.  This is a huge problem to me: inconsistency.  However, I'd still go back to get the honey lavender and their fruit compotes are quite nice!

I really want to love this place, but I actually don't find their ice cream flavors very approachable, or very amazing.

The salted caramel is WAYwaywayway too salty, and many of their more exotic flavors don't actually taste that out-of-this-word. (Mallard's in Bellingham blows them out of the water!)

I have to say though that Molly's cones are really great, and it smells delicious in the stores!

I think they've done a brilliant job with branding; they definitely have a great concept. I just think it fails a bit in execution.

As great ice cream goes, this place is known for producing great ice cream... That made sense in my head, but now that I read it, it makes absolutely no sense. But see that's the beauty of Molly Moon...

It doesn't make sense that a "basalmic strawberry" would taste better than a normal strawberry... Who would think of "salted caramel"? I mean really, why did it take so long for someone to make such a delicious "birthday cake" ice cream??? Why must the lines be so long???

But back to reality, if you can brave the long lines, find parking in the highly populated areas that these stores tend to be at, you're in for a treat! I can smell fresh waffle cones now...

After some extremely salty food, I needed something cold to ice down my tongue. We decided on Molly Moon. It was easily identified by the line inside the store. We figured we may as well try it and see what the fuss was about.

Had a taste of birthday cake and strawberry balsamic. Two single scoops in two waffle cones for about $8. Ugh. The waffle cones were just okay. They had been made a while ago (maybe earlier in the day?). The birthday cake was nice, with crunchy sprinkles..but the strawberry balsamic just had way too much balsamic (there was a fresh drizzle on top that we just couldn't eat around). We tired of it quickly.

And so, it's a nice place to try...I guess. I'm glad I experienced what the fuss was about to know that the wait wasn't worth it. I'd rather pick up a bin of Ben & Jerry's Phish Food or Soy Dream in the grocery store for cheaper.

Just for fun, I'm going to write a review comparing three places: Molly Moon's (on Pine), Old School Frozen Custard (on Pike), ANNNND homemade ice cream made in the comfort of my own home (somewhere in the dark underbelly of lower Queen Anne).

Vanilla is the standard I use for ice cream comparisons, and this is no exception. I'll rate five factors worth 5 stars each, then use an intensely complicated formula of adding and dividing to assess the final star-age out of 5. These factors are: Flavor, texture, waffle cone, service, and... the wow factor.

Let's start with my own ice cream. After purchasing a $15 vanilla bean, I scoop it into the heaviest cream I can find and chug it through my ice cream machine. Chug chug chug, some time in the freezer, and oila! Homemade ice cream! Now for the review:

HOMEMADE ICE CREAM FROM COMFORT OF HOME [9/5 = 1.8] so rounded to... 2 STARS

FLAVOR: Good flavor with real vanilla, but a bit on the light side. 4 stars.
TEXTURE: A bit too icy for my taste, but still better than QFC. 2 stars.
WAFFLE CONE: What waffle cone, I can barely make ice cream! 0 Stars.
SERVICE: Get your own. Please. 0 stars.
WOW factor: Kind of cool making your own, I guess. 3 stars.

MOLLY MOON'S ICE CREAM (on Pine) [21/5 = 4.2], so... 4 STARS

FLAVOR: Real vanilla bean, and good rich flavor. 5 stars.
TEXTURE: Very smooth, no ice, but a bit "fluffy". 4 stars.
WAFFLE CONE: Excellent! Not too hard, good flavor. 5 stars.
SERVICE: Good, but maybe a bit slow in busy times. 3 stars.
WOW factor: It's really good ice cream! 4 stars.

OLD SCHOOL FROZEN CUSTARD (on Pike) [23/5= 4.6, so... 5 STARS

FLAVOR: Very dense flavor, no vanilla bean,, but rich. 5 stars.
TEXTURE: Amazingly smooth, no ice, melts just right! 5 stars.
WAFFLE CONE: Good, but a bit too crunchy for my liking. 3 stars.
SERVICE: Very fast, friendly, and expedient, even with lines. 5 stars.
WOW factor: Custard is COOL! Lol. 5 stars.

CONCLUSION: Both Molly Moon's and Old School Custard are excellent. Molly Moon's makes a superior waffle cone, but as the ice cream goes (or custard, whatever), I have to give it to Old School. My own homemade attempts at ice cream, while better than store-bought, pale in comparison to these experts. Maybe I need ice-cream making tips. Anyone?

Complaints first:
-always a line
-small store, nowhere to sit
-where is the peanut butter, molly moon?
-they close kinda early
-their ice cream is a strong laxative (for some ppl)

And the good stuff:
-two words: salted caramel. Like many other items on the small, eclectic list of flavors, it sounds gross. But its in-cred-i-ble.
-you can split a scoop into 2 different flavors!
-friendly staff despite the constant lines & hectic environment
-waffle cones made on the spot
-nice location near many bars and across from the wed & fri dodge ball games

The only Thai Iced Tea I have ever loved has been the Molly Moons ice cream kind.

I was surprised and happy by this discovery, because so far I haven't really liked a number of their stranger flavors. One of those was that sorbet mint I had last time. It was good for a while and I loved that there was actual MINT in there instead of flavoring, but I just couldn't eat too much of it.

Tip: Apparently crazy dodgeball games happen in the field right next to this Molly Moon's (on Tuesday and Thursday evenings) and getting some ice cream is something lots of the game spectators do. My friend and I eventually gave in after watching people enjoy ice cream around us for about an hour.

Props to these peeps. Pump the smell of fresh waffle cones down the block right in front of a large park. The first time by you might resist the smell and the line, but the second time passing by, you will break down.

Delish Red Currant ice cream! Please don't take it away, it's so refreshing. I also enjoyed the Thai Iced Tea ice cream, which needs to be enjoyed by itself b/c of it's subtle flavor. The mojito sorbet is a great choice for something fresh with a minty and tart kick.

This place can not be healthy but who cares when you're indulging at Molly Moon's.

Two single scoop waffles around 8 bones. Two double scoop w's around 12 bones.

Enjoy!

The most TLC I've experienced in a scoop of ice cream EVER!!

Case in point: Their coffee ice cream doesn't contain highly acidic coffee that's been brewed at high temperatures.  Instead, they grind in some Vivace coffee beans and leave it to cold brew overnight, bringing out the natural flavors with none of the acidity.  Also, they prioritize the use of  local Washington ingredients and use compostable cups.  Why can't all businesses be this socially responsible????!

People in front of us were complaining about how long the line was, but after enduring many a 30 minute waits for tiny $6 cups of gelato in NYC, I wanted to punch them in the face and make them realize how lucky they are to have this ice cream store nearby.

Although the line is often out the door, this ice cream is worth the wait!

The flavors are fun and amazing. My favorite flavors are the honey lavender and the salted caramel. Every time I have a homemade waffle cone from Molly Moons it's as if I'm in ice cream bliss.

I don't like to only experience one flavor when having ice cream however two scoops it to much. I love that Molly Moon's lets you have half scoops which is something I can't say for Baskin Robins or alot of other ice cream places.

I love Molly Moons! It's so delicious!

I frequent the Wallingford location and am always a bit dissapointed by the lines-I want my ice ceam like, NOW. So, I was pleasantly suprised when in the middle of the Capitol Hill Block Party, I didn't have to wait, even with a lot of people in line.  The service was quick and friendly and efficient.

I tried the Rasberry Mint, which was really good and I was tempted to cheat on my new found love, Salted Caramel.  But the temptation was overcome and I had a blissful ten minutes with my waffle cone and salty carmely goodness and all was good in the world.

Salted Caramel is great, but not better than I've experienced elsewhere.  The little guy has enjoyed Birthday Cake here, but prefers Full Tilt's version.  Balsamic Strawberry is pretty darn amazing, but the taste was tainted on a rainy day several months ago, when my guys and I were forced to squeeze into the rather uncomfortable window seats, while the owner took up the only tables in the establishment to discuss - quite loudly - her unique book keeping software needs.
I understand that it's her joint, and she should be able to sit wherever she wants, but perhaps she should should consider using a satellite office during business hours, when paying customers might want to have their cones and enjoy them too.
Just sayin.

Yum!

Part of what makes Molly Moon's so great is the fantastic location right across the street from Bobby Morris Playfield and Cal Anderson Park.  After you've had your tasty lunch at Oddfellows, hit up Molly for some rich, creamy heaven and take a stroll around the park!

The chocolate is rich and filled with little bits of shaved chocolate.  My favorite flavor is coffee, and theirs was a bit of a disappointment for me.  It wasn't bad, but seemed a little bland and gritty--maybe because of all the Vivace coffee grounds in it.  I also tried a sample of the balsamic strawberry.  It sounds a little odd, but was delicious!  The strawberry flavor was sweet and the ribbons of balsamic gave it a tangy bite.

It's a warm Seattle summer evening, and your head is swimming with the loveliest of thoughts and the most comfortable of memories as you waltz around the vibrant nightlife that is Capitol Hill with two young gentlemen whom you looooove with all your heart.  Is there anything at all that could make this picture even closer to perfection?

MOLLY MOON'S!!!!

Although the wafting scent of freshly made waffle cones tantalized my fat ass's senses to the brink of giving in, I instead opted for a split single scoop -- balsamic strawberry and coffee.  At first I was like, wtf is 'balsamic' and 'strawberry' supposed to be together?  Oh, MM, I will never doubt again.

This is by far worth the wait, which is a LOT faster than Ici on College in Berkeley.  The ice cream is creamy but not too dense, not too melty and not too icy, and my beautiful server gave me a HUUUGE scoop!  Oh Jefferson, you had my heart at 'put hers on my tab too.'

To add to this religious experience, we enjoyed our cool treats across the street at the park while watching dodgeball.  Yes, that's right, dodgeball.  A bunch of grown ass people playing dodgeball in an enclosed outdoor arena.  Great times!

I really wanted to love this. I really did. I came in excited and skipping, anticipating delicious salted Carmel ice cream like I have read about. I was let wayyyy down. I got a scoop of it and it was WAY friggin salty and nasty.

I only got 3 or 4 bites down before I let it melt in the park next to me. Yuck.
I don't think I can do this again.

Save your money and get something else.

This shop is two blocks from my apartment, so I really wanted to love it. I gave it four tries before deciding I would never come back.

The main reason is the terrible, unsmiling, snotty service. The second: truly mediocre ice cream, ranging from extremely bland, to overwhelmingly salty.

First trip: tried the salted caramel. I actually threw the ice cream away half consumed. I am a very healthy girl, and have never, ever intentionally thrown ice cream away prior to this. WAY WAY too much salt, not enough caramel.
But the service was nice, with smiling people behind the counter who asked how I was, and bade me a fond farewell.

Second trip: Salted licorice. I was looking for a strong black licorice taste, and received a cone filled with dime store candy flavored salt lick. Barely enough licorice flavor to qualify.
Service was ok, but no one was smiling, or looking like they wanted to be anywhere within a 20 mile radius of the shop.

Third trip: Ginger ice cream. Yum! Loved it. Great little pieces of candied ginger made me drool over every bite.
Service: Ok, so I had an old latte cup with me, as I had been walking around for several hours. Looking around the shop, I could find not a single trash bin. I VERY nicely asked the counter person if there was a bin behind the counter where this could be disposed of. THE GIRL SNAPPED THE CUP FROM MY HANDS, ROLLED HER EYES, AND STALKED AWAY. Whoa! Who is hiring these people??!!

Fourth trip: Birthday cake. I have no idea how they came up with this gem, unless they measured it against the week old on-special cakes from Costco. No wait, those have flavor. There was absolutely no flavor in this ice cream. The ultimate blandness was astounding. Not even a hint of vanilla.

Service: my friend has a service dog. We walked in to FOUR employees yelling "YOU CAN'T HAVE THAT DOG IN HERE". After my friend nicely let them know it was a service animal, we were served as quickly as possible, then ignored Quaker style with a good old fashioned shunning, complete with turned backs.

I work in the service industry.......but the service in here is so bad that I don't tip......and now I will never go back. I will also tell every single person I know and meet to go elsewhere for their ice cream. There are a few other, much nicer places in this neighborhood for frozen refreshments. I gave you four tries, MM.

i just don't like it. first off, i like my ice cream to taste good. i don't want curry flavored ice cream. i tried some of the offbeat flavors on the off chance i was being judgemental, but it was not good.

the waffle cones are the best part.   the smell wafting down the street of them cooking has almost enticed me in again after already deciding the very expensive and mostly un-appetizing ice cream wasn't worth it.  almost, but not quite..

i just don't get the obsession

Some of the best ice cream I've had in my entire life. I tried the balsamic strawberry and honey lavender. I really liked the balsamic strawberry a LOT but wasn't a fan of the honey lavender but then again I'm not a huge fan of anything lavender in general, sooo ... It wasn't repulsive though, it was edible. Anyways, there will most likely be a line out the door when you arrive: wait in it. It'll be worth it. And it moves a lot faster than you'd imagine.

Big ups to Molly Moon's for their creative flavors!!

Not quite sure what the hype is about.

Being genetically built to love the premise/attitude of this place makes it all the harder to just not like the ice cream. I look at the menu and think every single one *sounds* good, but then nothing lives up to the name...

Sigh.

The 20 minute long lines don't help either, though I'd happily wait if the payoff was good.  Serving sizes are pretty huge though.

Sometimes, Molly Moon's is a little too in-your-face about their wacky ice cream flavors -- for my taste anyway. I can appreciate novelty flavors, and I think a lot of them sound delicious -- but sometimes I feel like Molly Moon's sacrifices taste for the dare-factor.

And guess what? It's hot out! I don't have time for that!

Salted Caramel? Insane. I've had delicious salted caramels, but this was *~SALT~*ed caramel. A whole scoop of it was just too much. Blerg. We actually dumped the scoop out to eat the cone alone. The Balsamic Strawberry was a good example of "crazy" + "edible" though. So, I don't know. Think hard about your ice cream choices!

That said, I'm sure I will continue to dump all my money into Molly Moon's everyday this summer -- but only when there isn't a long ass line and I can smell fresh waffle cone. The super convenient location plus the scent of fresh waffle cones is just too much for me.

This is the best ice cream I've ever had, without a doubt. Inventive flavors (honey lavender, birthday cake, salted caramel to name a few).  Even if you usually get your ice cream in a cup, go for the waffle cone when you come here. They are made fresh in a waffle maker right at the counter, and still slightly warm and chewy when you take a bite.

Be prepared to wait, we were here at 2pm on a Monday and the line was still out the door.

I thought Molly Moon's was just a'ight. Don't hate me Seattleites.

To each their own I guess. Apparently, I'm not a fan of weird ice cream flavors. I've tried salted caramel, balsamic strawberry, ginger, honey lavender, raspberry mint sorbet, scout mint, and cake.

Cake is definitely my favorite with scout mint at a close second. The others are just plain weird and the sorbet was a little too tart for me.

I will give MM's props for making a yum waffle cone though!

Yeahh.....

I don't know.  I think the Wallingford location is better.  Something about the Capital Hill location bugs me.  The serving sizes here are smaller as well.  It's definitely closer, but for whatever reason, I think I'd rather make the drive out to Wallingford than go back to the Capital Hill location.  Just me though.
