I recently Stumbled upon this when looking for a nearby round table. Ive only heard about mollie stones as it falls into the whole foods like market.
ITs great!.
They have fresh sanwhiches, soups, pies, pastries. the meat market area has plenty of good meats, deli meats and everything reasonably priced. Lots of good finds you wont find at safeway and luckys, and this place made it big when I found the Bom Dia Acaii juice. Its my favorite juice and really hard to find but this place stocks it weekly Huge fan -
Review from Bing D.
they have their own parking lot in the back...there is some kind of parking eventually if you wait in the right spot...someone will always move around you to sneak one if you're too slow though...lol.
i've been coming here since i was a kid. i even volunteered here when John Pommon was the owner.
Family market owned by Mollie Stone's now. Its interesting because MOST of the faces are still the same. Nice thing.
Its a bit pricier than other places...but you have the neighborhood feel to it.
Mollie Stones generally, is an upscale supermarket where they usually sell things that are a bit pricier and can't be found like generic items of food or household items. Even the food and delicatessen is higher end...its full of foods cooked for your laziness.
I used to come here for the roasted beef..lots of sauce after its weighed because its roasted perfectly. I also noticed that the macaroni and cheese is always sold out.
One time, this student came in. She said she forgot her wallet. The cashier gave her ten dollars as a loan so she could pay him back the next day. I don't know if she did...but thats the OLD SCHOOL neighborhood goodness that this place brings.
Being a Neighborhood store...it does treat you like neighborhood...meaning, if you come here expect it to be a bit friendlier and will take you a little longer. -

Expensive but good selections. Expect to pay up to $2 a pound more than Trader Joe's on fruit & veggies. Great selection on cheeses but same deal up to at least $2-$3 more than other stores for the same cheese.

Review from Nora S.
I really enjoy this Mollie Stone's location. I live in the hood, so it's easy to get to. The people who work here are also really fantastic. They have told me on multiple occasions that if I am looking for something and they don't currently carry it to let them know and they can order it. That is fantastic! I also got an amazing rustic loaf here a few weeks ago and it made my sandwiches extra delicious. Also amazing is their fully loaded chicken noodle soup (they have it at all the locations I've been to, but I want to extol its greatness). You can get it hot, or you can buy it packaged with or without matzoh balls.
The store is small, but I don't feel like it is missing anything and it never feels overly crowded. It reminds me of The Metropolitan Market in Tacoma. -

Expensive, but good stuff and lots that is hard to find elsewhere. Friendly staff.
Gripe: for many years Tower Market sold the most incredible habanero (chicken) sausages---fiery, flavorful, great consistency---and now what they sell under that name are awful in every way---mild, vaguely off-tasting, and textured like a rotten rug. One of my favorite foods---gone. -

The basic facts have been stated by other reviewers: Great store but high prices, more expensive than Whole Foods.
I love them for their cheese, bread and wine selection.
Their "world food" section is interesting, they have a small but good selection of Dutch and German food, items that i have not seen elsewhere. Also the staff is very friendly and helpful.
If you want a good bread selection or are looking for something special, Mollie Stone's is the store for you. I would not recommend though, going there with a full shopping list. -

The sandwiches are on point and at $5.99 - its a steal. AND there is a frequent buyer card.

Expensive. Expensive. Expensive.
Regular grocery like milk and cereal is priced at least 20% higher than Safeway.
Fruits and vegetables are fresh but even they are 20% more expensive than whole foods.
If you can shop somewhere else, do. -

The checkers are super nice and easy to talk to! And they've given helpful advice on choosing products (they seem to actually do their shopping there and to try out new and special items). I would almost choose to shop there just for them!
But, the prices are high for my budget, and so unless I urgently need something (I live just a 2-minute walk from MS) I usually go to Safeway in either the Castro or in Diamond Heights where the employees all apparently hate their jobs and treat shoppers like cattle. -

In the short span of three months that I've been in the neighborhood (kind of), Mollie Stone's thick-cut bone-in ribeye and the wild salmon from the deli, delicious red velvet cake from the bakery as well as the wine and cheese selection have saved me multiple times when it comes to putting something together for last-minute get-togethers.
Not to mention the fact that it has that neighborhood store feel to it - I wouldn't be surprised if most of the customers have gone there for years - they sure act like it whenever they talk to the friendly shop attendants!
Move over, Whole Foods and Safeway. Mollie Stone's is the shit - at least the one in this location is! -

At first I really avoided shopping at this place However, I have moved forward and gave them another shot. I have to say the food is delicious and some of the employees are wonderful people who are helpful and courtesy.
The only place I can find where they carry stuffed grapes leaves middle eastern style on a consistent basis that is fresh and flavorful. Their selection of pita bread is fantastic and your tabbouleh salad is the right consistency of lemon juice; Yum Yum:) They have a wonderful selection of hummus as well even for a small store.
Their prices are reasonable but do compare prices, I have found their selection of Champagne is reasonably price compare to other groceries stores in the area.
Their fresh orange juice is wonderful and literally can feel the vitamin C throughout your body. Their food to go section is fantastic especially their ready made sandwiches. Lets not talk about sweets because they offer a great selection especially their brownies and cookies. -
Review from Jen H.
The store is quite old but has plenty of parking, is well-edited and neatly stocked.
The most memorable thing was how nice the staff was - chivalry is not dead here! I was prob asked 5x from various associates (yeah, all male but who cares *grin*) if I needed help shopping, checking out, getting to my car, etc. Granted, yeah, I'm on crutches so maybe an unfair advantage, but hell, at Safeway... well, if you have every shopped there, then you know what I'm going to say.
My checkout / bagger guy insisted on carrying my groceries to my car, and not only did he load them in, he also tucked me in, loaded my crutches and saw me off. My knight in a shining green apron... -

Can't believe it took me so many years to check out this location. I was never a big fan of Mollie Stones (based on my experiences with the Burlingame and San Bruno stores) until I discovered the Portola Street Location. Butcher's are expert with everything under their showcase. Some highlights: Come crab season, they have the best catch in the city! Pork sausages are some of the tastiest I've ever had. Their in-house baked bread is excellent and pre-made deli plates have saved our evenings on many occasions.
Overall, everyone at this location is incredibly friendly. Any issues you may have with things like produce, missing bagged items, meat quality...ANYTHING, they'll take care of it without hassle. -

I feel fortunate that Mollie Stone's is my neighborhood market. It is not a Safeway, Lucky, or Cala type of grocery store - so if you're looking for cheap prices for processed food then this is not the place for you. I come here for the fresh organic meat and produce. I find the poultry selection to be much better than Andronico's.
Last year I had a quibble with one of the butchers so I stayed away. I relented after I realized that my family's diet was suffering. The Safeway on Taraval was NOT cutting it. Besides - everybody has an occasional bad day. Forgive and forget.
The cheese and wine departments are also great. Wonderful selections and prices. I do wish that the garlic and onions were fresher and more firm, but the rest of produce is usually good.Comment from David B. of Mollie Stone's 2/9/2011

The only thing I would buy here is the meat and the wine and really those are the only two. I might pick up some produce but really why pay more if I can get it less somewhere less like Safeway in diamond heights or Traders Joe's on Geary.
My suggestion is the rib-eye steak, halibut, and cab wines.
You might wanna bring elbow pads with you on the weekends, people that shop here can be rude. I'm just saying.... -

4 massive stars for being directly across the street from Juvenile Hall (Hi, EUGE!!!). This means that while I wait for a meeting to start at Juvie, I can get my organic salad, free-range chicken sandwich on sprouted wheat 12-grain bread, and a bottle of all-natural, fat free water for lunch. And then I can eat it on the bench in the sunshine while watching children carted in in handcuffs. What fun!
But for real, they take the handcuffed kids in through the back so as not to spoil the mood, and the prepared foods are really yummy and seem a bit cheaper than the Mollie Stone's in my neighborhood. In fact, the whole store is nicer, cleaner, and all around better than the Pac Heights Mollie's. I prefer this location hands-down, but then I am awfully partial to juvenile delinquents. -

I'm pretty much a TJ's loyalist, but I was in a pinch today and stopped by Mollie Stone's while cutting through Twin Peaks.
As soon as I found out they don't carry cartons of chai, I said to myself, "that's it...one star!" However, I continued to shop and found all sorts of goodies to make up for it. Best of all, I discovered beautiful boxes of Oregon Chai teabags (why is it that I can never type or say that without a really nasty visual?) in 3 varieties...black, red, and green tea. I went for the green and look forward to brewing some up tomorrow morning before work. I need all the motivation possible to drag my sorry ass out of bed at the crack of dawn!
I was also pleased to see Clover organic yogurt (which I believe is new)...it's the little things that really make me happy! They also have a fantastic selection of cheeses, produce, and prepared foods.
Mollie Stone's is a little overpriced and the parking lot here really blows, but it's better than my disgusting neighborhood Safeway on 30th and Mission! Nasty. -

I had a request from my boyfriend.
"Can you cook the black pepper steak?"
Again?!
I was out of bell peppers and green onions and needed those for the dish. Although, I have to admit , this dish is really good. Actually, I can't even take credit for it because you can get the black pepper sauce at any Asian grocery store.
I like Mollie Stone's for their produce. (proximity to my place counts too) Right when you walk in, there's a rainbow of fruits and veggies that greet you. And, most of the time, these are perfect, bruise-free and shiny looking.
The green bell peppers sell for $1.99/lb. The red $2.99/lb. Green onions are 89 cents a bunch. (inflated prices here!)
The organic red bell peppers go for $6.99/lb!
I'll take my veggies with a little bit of pesticide, thank you.
That would be the third time in a week that I've made that dish. He had it for dinner and said: "thanks for making it! it's good!"
me: "yeah, but aren't you tired of eating the same thing for the last couple of days?"
Hunny: "huh? how can you get tired of steak?"
Spoken like a true man. -

I hate this Molly Stone's. Everytime I go in there I get so pissed off. It is not a pleasant experience by any means.
First off, the parking lot is a nightmare. All the spots are metered, there aren't very many spots, and once you go in - it is really difficult to get out (especially if you were not fortunate enough to find a spot). I've learned to park a-ways-away and walk over but it took me a few frustrating times to learn this.
The store is small and cramped. It's like on an airplane - they need to eliminate one aisle and give every other aisle just a little more breathing room. You can barely squeeze by people in aisles with or without a cart. Grocery store "traffic jams" near important stops such as the butcher counter, deli, or dairy case are common. I feel like a 15 minute shopping experience turns into 30 minutes because of the difficulty in maneuvering around this store.
The produce section is unimpressive, and the flowers are always crappy. They DO have a good cheese selection, a great deli, and a decent butcher though - but the experience there just kills it.
Finally, to top it off, it's expensive. I still shop here sometimes out of convenience but I hate every minute of it. -
Review from Penelope D.

Everyday products are marked up 10-30% over other supermarkets. So expect to pay a few dimes more for small container of Yoplait or a buck more for a six pack of beer.
Beyond that, the deli makes great sandwiches and the meats are quite good. The produce is good as well, but their commercial produce is the same price as Rainbow Grocery's organic produce.
One thing that really bugs me about Mollie Stones is the greenwash bullshit out front.
They make a huge deal out of recycling cardboard and composting, yet like so many other supermarkets they have no doors on their refrigeration units.
So imagine coming to a party at my house. There you stand listening to me bragging about recycling cans and using the green bin, but all night long, I leave the refrigerator door open.
Not very green, is it?
Can you imagine how many thousands of kilowatt hours Mollie Stone's loses by keeping these antiquated refrigeration systems?
Isn't it a little disingenuous for Mollie Stone's to brag about their new found commitment to going green while leaving their 25 refrigerator doors open? -

I think the booze is the only thing here that's not overpriced, but sometimes it's fun to be bourgeious and pretend like it doesn't make my soul scream to spend $10 for lunch meat and sliced cheese.

Just five minutes up the hill from Glen Park BART (an easy bus ride on the #44). I always thought this was called Tower Market, I had no idea it was Mollie Stone's supermarket!
Larger, more selection, and cheaper prices than Canyon Market, though slightly more than the other chain supermarkets, ie. King Arthur Flour at MS: $6.99. Same item at Trader Joes: $4.99. But at least there were plenty of sale items and a very impressive cheese selection.
They also have a much larger selection of Kosher foods than the other non-speciality supermarkets, including meat, frozen items, and packaged goods. Dying to know where to buy some schmaltz for your kugel or matzo balls? Mollie Stone's to the rescue. -
Review from Fannie S.
Nice grocery store. They do carry some specialty items. I especially love their deli section. And their seafood/meat section. Oh, and their naughty thing is tons of chocolate bars and bits by the registers...ah, I hate it...impulse buys! Their desserts are nice too.
Quite a pretty penny. Better quality than Safeway, and some items are about the same in prices. Just have to do your homework!
Parking is easy...when you're not there when everyone else is going!
The people here are so friendly and helpful. Seriously... I sometimes walk in there looking like a disgruntled 12-year-old in my PJs, flip-flops and hair in rat's tail form...and they still smile and ask to help me. -
Review from Denise Q.
I love grocery shopping, and Mollie Stones is no exception to my love.
The place is nicely done and arranged. Even though it's a chain, it still gives off that upper scale, gourmet market vibe. It definitely doesn't feel like Albertson's in here, let's just say that.
They display their veggies and fruits nicely, have a nice meat and deli section with a very helpful butcher, fish fish, offer a great variety of cheeses, and their bakery is wonderful. Good wine section and alot of organic offerings for those that want to be super healthy. Also the store stocks alot of harder to find food items that you normally would think of finding in a specialty store, in say Noe Valley. The staff is nice and helpful, and I rarely have to wait in a line of more than 4 people.
I enjoy coming here, I always take my time, and seeing all the food and how it's displayed motivates me to actually want to cook. Or just pick something up here to bring home and pretend I made it.
Yes it's pricier than other grocery stores, but you get what you pay for and the quality of the store and it's products shows. -

Updated 7/16/07:
Downgrading by a full star because they seem to have started hiring clerks, rather than butchers, at their meat counter. We went in last night to buy a pork shoulder to make sausage. We didn't see any in the case, so we asked the guy at the counter. He told us that pork loin (an extremely lean cut from a totally different part of the animal) would be close. Yeah, no. I was so pissed, I actually told him off: "Dude, you call yourself a butcher? Other than both being from a PIG, they're not anything alike."
-----
Updated 3/13/06: So, we went there on the weekend and did our whole big grocery shopping for the week. The butcher was great, going in the back to get the specific cuts and sizes of meats that I requested, and going out of his way to thank us, in a way that seemed quite sincere, for shopping with them.
I was so impressed by the selection and the service, I went onto http://safeway.com when I got home and shopped for all the items I bought at Tower, just to see what the premium was. And guess what: Safeway was $4.50 *more* expensive (on a $130 shopping trip) -and- they didn't have three of the things I needed. I'm really happy to know that I'm not spending more overall to shop here.
-----------
Still the best butcher in the City that I've found.
On the other hand, I don't know how they took the old Tower Market layout and made it even worse, but they have: you can't get more than 2 carts wide in the produce section on a Saturday afternoon... it's nuts!
Gripes aside, this is the place to go if you can't handle Whole Foods fascist anti-everything policies (hey, sometimes I *want* cured meats... I'm a grownup, let me decide. Oops, sorry, off the soapbox now...) but still need your gourmet food fix.Listed in: Get your grocery on

this is a great store. I get cajun marinated half chickens (or lemon garlic) for $3.69. I couldn't give a sh_t less if the chicken isn't organic or free range or what; it's dead and it's tasty when cooked. their butchers and fishmongers are so helpful and nice and honest to boot. 'is this farmed salmon?' 'yep, the coloring came out of a Crayola box.' lmao !! I love it
I found a spectalicious macaroon the size of a C-cup implant -- heavenly good ! this thing was bigger and prettier than most breasts in San Francisco (except mine of course) -

Teeny Tiny location. I seriously got a bit claustrophobic. Everything is stacked to the brim. This is after the remodel.
I suggest you visit this store off peak hours of the day because parking is atrocious. I usually avoid but the sale circular had my kombucha tea drinks $1.50 cents cheaper than Rainbow. -
Review from Liz S.
The more things change, the more they stay the same.
Kudos to Mollie Stone's for making the switchover from our beloved Tower Market less painful than I ever imagined. And thank God I can now fit a shopping cart down the aisles because trying to fit a week's worth of groceries in one of those plastic hand-baskets nearly caused me to have gangrene in my arms from carrying such a heavy load.
It's less dusty now, and more organized. However, this store still feels very special and neighborhood-market like, not super-market like. The butcher shop in the back is my favorite part of the store, and we always get good meat there.
The deli has improved as far as the quality of the food, but the prices are similar to what you would find at Whole Foods, so a picnic made up of food from the deli can become an expensive affair.
They have a lot of nice accessories and appliances in the front. If you need a last-minute gift, great. If you are not looking to add $50 to your grocery bill, speed past this section, or be prepared to explain why you needed another plastic cutting board or a set of 3" porcelain custard cups when you were supposedly just going out for milk.
The layout of the store has improved (especially the produce section) however the sections have remained relatively the same so thank goodness I never had to re-orient myself. I like to speed-shop, so this is very important to me.
All in all, this is a great grocery store. It's not the cheapest, but you can find a wide variety of products in a very convenient location. And the baggers still ask if they can help you out to your car with a sincerity that I don't usually experience in other stores - nice.Listed in: To Market, To Market

San Francisco, CA
Read Anita C.'s reviews. They are eye-openers. Yes it is expensive for snacks, but the staples are not that bad. Bread selections is much better than Safeway. Milk is adequate and meat, beer and wine are as cheap or cheaper (unless you can consume 5 lbs of meat at a time). I was worried when Viglizzo's bought it and even more when Mollie Stone stepped in, but, the place is much nicer to shop in and (wait for it...) You don't have to wait in the (....) check out!
I used to mystery shop Andronico's on Sloat. Huge place. More food then you ever want. But the service basically sucked green pickles. Slow deli. Lucky if there was anyone behind the meat counter. Wait ten minutes to checkout.
Mollie's (as I now fondly call her) kept the best and forgot the worst. Now a nice clean store, she still has the same staff (and underripe fruit, Tower was even worse), but she has so many checkout lines that I either don't have to wait or they open up a new one while I am waiting and call me over. Heaven! Like Diego Montoya says, "I hate waiting!"
The deli is good (the foie gras save my ashes when a caterer didn't show up for a housewarming I was holding). But the other Yelpers are right. Go to Miraloma Market for milk or for wine you can't get at Mollie's (and Burritos and Tacos already. ) The prices are about the same. Go to Creighton's for cheese or a sandwich if you want. But please continue to shop at Mollie's. It's a gem, and I don't want to see its twinkle wink out. -
Review from Jen D.
This is a pretty nice grocery store... They carry a variety of specialty items and have a great produce section as well as a fresh butcher department in the back... It's not too large so I guess you can't get everything in here, but again, specialty items are available...
Kinda pricey, but definitely worth the money... -

I came running in looking for a last minute bouquet of flowers. They had them sitting right when you walk, or as I did, run in. Why are flowers so expensive? Oh well...
The cashier, this very nice man made small talk with us and we walked away with a smile. -
Review from Nanette L.
San Francisco, CA
I love the new varieties Mollie Stone brings to this market. There is a wide selection of cheeses, olives, pre-baked goods from other bakeries, and the wine selection is great since someone actually takes the time to review them.
In the meat department there is a great selection of top quality grade beef, pork, chicken, veal, sausauges, etc.
Beautiful fresh seasonal flowers and plants are available at this location.
Gourmet candy, cookies, and other specialty items exist here.
Deductions...
I would be cautious to purchase some of the frozen stuff because I see what looks like frozen vegetables might have been in the freezer for awhile because it is iced over inside the bag. Could be that this neighborhood has a few brown outages every now and then and the food is not checked or removed.
This location has it's own parking lot in the back but has limited number of parking slots. Sad thing is there are expensive meters outside the market which can to your cost of groceries. San Francisco meter rates are not cheap. -
Review from James T.
San Francisco, CA
I love the store because of the veggies, organics, and awesome fish and meats. It's not busy because it's pricey but you need to know what to buy.
The clam chowder is good and the breads are usually fresh but not the place you want to get all your shopping unless money is no object.
Parking on the side and friendly people always. If you also buy more than 4 bottles of wine they discount it so put another bottle in the cart and save a bit more. I wish their saké selection was better.
Costco has the deal on ahi and shrimp but their veggies and fruit sucks. So go to farmers markets or mollie stones for that. I don't trust Whole Foods anymore since the whole fake organic thing they got busted for.
I am growing my own herbs and veggies now anyway but just can't grow it all. -

The facelift of the old Tower Market is, on the whole, a pretty decent improvement. It doesn't feel like a maze when you walk in anymore.
Many folks have complained that the prices have gone up, but I don't see it. They did knock out part of the beer section, which doesn't play too well at my house, but that' ok.
The produce section is better. You walk in to the store to a nice area lit by halogen and lots of well placed veggies, fruits, etc. Their selection is very good. The deli is nice, their meat counter is fantastic. Lots of folks behind the counter, most know all about what they are doing. You can't beat that.
One day I needed to buy some specific wines from a specific region in France, which is NOT my forte. I was a little bit intimidated, but the person working there on a Sunday morning was very helpful and informative. Their wine inventory seems to be cover all the bases. Overall, a very good experience each and every time.
Driving into the parking lot directly in front of this place is hazardous to your health. I like to park in the two lots on either side of this block, in the back lot, or on the street. I strongly recommend you do the same.Listed in: Monterey Marvels

So cramped inside, limited selection, parking is a nightmare (not for me though, get a motorcycle).
About the only reason I think I'd ever go to a Molly Stone again is if I didn't feel like cooking and just wanted to get some of their fancy-pants pasta salad or olive salad or potato salad or bean salad. Maybe if I was on my way to a party and had to bring a dish.
But I'd rather just go out to eat, mostly. See my review for the other Molly Stone for more specifics.
