Yes, it's expensive. Yes, you are better off going to Safeway or Target for the bulk items and dry packaged goods. Yes, the deli isn't actually my fave part of this place.

But talk about great cheese! And for produce, I have *always* ended up buying more than I needed, simply because it all looked so good. The best grapes I've found all season have been bought at Mollie Stone's!

I love that you can find so many natural food store items here- like Amaranth cereal and all the different types of Quinoa grains &tc. I love the friendly, smiling people who work here and yes, the Starbucks is a nice and convenient perk.

I also love that I can buy Krispy Kreme doughnuts here. For the record, I don't usually crave these lardy treats, but lately, well... lately, I've just been glad to find my ol' glazed favs so close to where I live :)

Also, this is where I buy Vosge's Bacon Chocolate bars for friends who don't believe me that bacon + sweet = delish.

I want to like this place. I really do. But after shopping here over a dozen times I just don't get it...

First of all, it's not a proper supermarket. It's a deli and a produce market with a decent meat and fish counter and a tiny selection of dried, packaged and tinned goods. Don't come here looking for paper plates. Or your kids' favorite cereal.

They do have a huge deli counter and prepared foods section with a very unremarkable menu, sort of what you'd expect in a ho-hum country diner, not in a sophisticated "foodie" city. I've sampled many of their prepared foods and am universally disappointed at the quality of their cooking... even Safeways makes better salads. Their extensive sushi offerings come from the same supplier that sells in all the major supermarket chains and that uses imitation fish products with the same bland taste.

The one stand-out is their vegan chili, which is delicious.

They have a huge cheese selection, most of it mediocre. And a huge selection of chocolates (go figure). Their biggest attraction is the ample selection of produce at prices more reasonable than Whole Foods, though not as much organic or locally sourced as Whole Foods.

The cashiers are friendly and helpful.

But I was disappointed to see that they don't have a community bulletin board like many other supermarkets, where you can post ads for local events. When I asked about this I was told that the manager "doesn't want the bother".  Oh well, I guess I won't bother with that extra star...

Mollie Stones provides some really good service.  The shuttle that brings me home is an awesome perk.  I shop once a week.

Yes, they have a huge selection of cheeses, but, I pretty much avoid it since they are really expensive.  Once in a while a treat.

The roast chickens are good and reliable.  The deli is good, also a bit spendy.

I buy a good deal of veg and fruit and always find it reliable and fresh.  If I see something missing or not good, I ask.  If they've got it, I'll get it.

The meat and seafood counter is very nice, also spendy on certain things.  But, I do not eat loads of meat, so my purchases are small.  It's not like I'm feeding an army.

The service is always friendly, they do have sales, and you just need to buy what you need.  Some staples are maybe .50 higher than Safeway, for the free shuttle rather than my using a City Car Share, it's worth it.  Besides, I always get the chance to hit the patsisseries fro bread and pastry, yum.

I have a love  / hate relationship with Mollie.  She's always there, close by, like a good friend that even drives you home when you're done. But while you're inside she'll rape you with exorbitant prices for everything. Good luck getting out of there for less than $100. I always leave this place feeling sad that my wallet is now empty.

This is one of the smallest Molly Stones that I've gone to. I like the Starbucks at the front. That's a nice concept, and very refreshing after I'm done shopping. The salad bar is not too exciting. I understand we can't use plastic any more, but it took me about 5 minutes to find any sort of container to put my food into. They probably don't want us to eat a lot of salad because the containers are very small... I generally get the asparagus and the egg whites, that I have to pry off the egg yolks. If you see too many egg yolks, but not enough egg whites you will know it's my handy work...

In general I like this grocery store chain.  However, this one sort of sucks.  The salad bar was weak and a lot of the stuff was wilted and brown -- not super appetizing.  The place is tiny but they do manage to have a nice fish/meat counter and a huge cheese selection.  Other than that it is lacking in selection and is over priced.

Overpriced to the point of absurdity, Mollie Stone's actually makes Whole Foods look cheap.  And it's not with any great improvement in quality; It's largely the same old everyday products that you could get at Safeway or your corner convenience store, just MUCH more expensive.  Mollie Stone's seems to be overpriced just BECAUSE.  Every time I come here, I kind of have to laugh, as there is so little justification for their inflated prices.  Most items are marked up 30-50% over their price in Whole Foods.  It's just CRAZY, man.  I only come here when going somewhere else would be exceptionally INconvenient, and I limit myself to 1 or 2 items.  To be fair, they've got a lot of cheese.  And they make a mean croissant.  ...but I'm not sure that these things in themselves justify the price bump (interestingly, their croissant is quite reasonably priced.  That is one of the FEW items which are so).  So don't come here to do ALL of your shopping (...unless price is of no concern.  And considering the neighborhood in which it is perched [my own], I'd imagine that it's NOT a concern... Still, it's the PRINCIPLE...).  The selection is not as good as Whole Foods, and the same products (even LESSER products) cost a HELL of a lot more.  Skip it, and just go down the street to Whole Foods.  It's not THAT much farther, after all...

I'm already on a rush to get to work and found out (on a short notice) that it's my co-worker's bday, so I needed to get cake.

This Mollie Stone's is conveniently located near work.  I pulled into the parking lot and this person was slowly pulling out of his car spot.

S-l-o-w-l-y putting on his seatbelt...

S-l-o-w-l-y inching away from the space...

WTF.

* honk!!! *

He was looking for his jamba juice drink.  I saw him s-l-o-w-l-y- slurping on his drink while trying to drive with one hand.

* Oh, sweet Lord!!!  Please give me patience!!! *

So, I finally made it into the store and was rewarded with a dizzying array of dessert choices which instantly calms my nerves.  Lemon cake, German Chocolate, Princess cake, Fruit tarts, your usual brownies, cupcakes and cheesecakes.

Since the bday boy prefers cheesecakes, that's what I'm buying.

Wait a minute, this Mollie's only has personal-size cheesecakes but not a full sized one. (plus that small-itty-bitty cheesecake costs $13.99!)

* sorry boy, you're S.O.L. *

As I stood in line with my 8" Cookies N Cream cake, I noticed that the cashier was in a sour mood.  No smiles, just an obligatory, "hey, how are you today?"

I kept my tone light, flashed him a smile and said, "okay, thanks.  Hanging in there?"

He pauses.  "Yup, just a long day"

Then I saw a smile.

The items here at Mollie's may cost you a little bit more than Safeway, but remember a smile is always free!

This used to be my neighborhood grocery store, back when I lived a couple of blocks away, way back during the earthquake days, 20 years ago. It was called Grand Central back then, and it was an old school type City Market.

Mollie Stones took over not long after that, just like they did in San Bruno at the old Petrini's Market. That was a great old school market, too. Personalized service!

But Mollie Stones brought a newer approach, with healthier selections, appealing to a new generation of shoppers. They put in a big flower area, added the coffee shop, rearranged the butcher area, opened up the ceiling to bring in more light, etc. They did a nice job.

This Mollie Stones has a good selection of Cheeses. There used to be a specialty cheese proprietor a couple of doors down, but alas, times change. I don't eat much cheese anymore, but Mollie's had one of my favorites, a Cave-Aged Gruyere from Switzerland. Great dry, nutty flavor, wonderful with a nice red. At $22.99/pound, it better be good!

The great thing about this market, for the City, is that it has a lot of free parking. And there is a city pay lot across the street when the free lot is too full. Also, they have a flat screen TV you can watch at the check-out line. It's on the Food Network! Great idea for the business. I am sure many people have gotten out of line to get some ingredient they saw on Iron Chef America!

For the City, this is a nice market. Not as big as Whole Foods closer in on California, but better than most. Compared to sprawling suburban groceries, well, there is no comparison as far as amenities and selection. But at least you can walk here!

I live very close to this Mollie Stone.

Upside: Very convenient great service, great selection of cheeses, fresh meat and veggies (my default location for those two items.) and lots of organic stuff. Great deli.

Downside: The prices. It is almost painful to see how much the stuff you buy rings up to.

So I only come here only if I am lazy with cooking and want to impress friends with the quality of food you want to make. Otherwise I make my trips to Mollie Stone's as sparse as possible.

So close to home, but far from making the cut as a grocery store i'll buy things from.

I'd honestly buy anywhere except here just in hope that one day they'll lower their prices to the competitors.

I saw a 2 x 3 inch Rice Krispie Treat for $3.....I can buy a whole cereal box + marshmellows + butter and create 30 times that amount  for $10.

I'm going 3 stars for Stone's, bought with an impressive selection of meats, cheeses, and a bunch of the stuff in between.  The other two missing stars disappeared into a $7 pack of raspberries.

MS is super convenient if you happen to live right across the street, and as far as neighborhood groceries is concerned, it rips the pants right off the absurd selections near my Lower Haight residence.  Their various departments seem pretty well stocked, and they even have a nice little selection of $15 spatulas in case you find yourself desperately in need of a piece of silicone on a stick.

Bonus points: I've been having trouble finding St. Andre, one of my favorite cheeses, in other local markets recently - Mollie's had it well stocked, so I'd say whoever handles their cheese has his bizness in order.

5 stars for the free shuttle service! With $20 minimum purchase, there is a shuttle that will take you home on Mondays and Tuesdays. There is a schedule posted on the shuttle shelter inside the parking lot. This is a great thing for folks who don't drive. I saw quite a few seniors taking advantage of this service.

The market has a pretty sizable parking lot. We went in pretty late with the intent of buying ice cream. Surprise! The ice cream was on sale for 2/$7. So why was this significant? You don't have to buy 2 to get the discount. You can buy 1 and still get the deal just like Safeway, but with no club card.

The food area looked good, but it didn't smell that great. Don't know if that was from dirty water or from bad food. I'm hoping it wasn't from bad food.

I don't know about other prices so I'm probably of no help, but sounds like they like to go premium.

I have to add two stars to my previous review because this place has a new purpose for me.  I will still do the bulk of my shopping elsewhere, but I was fiending for oysters the other day after being cock-blocked at the Cliff House, and I was almost ready to hop in the car and go all the way up the coast to Tomales Bay to get some fresh, live, in the shell Oy.

Thinking to myself that that sounded a bit like crackhead talk, I decided instead to call around the city and see if I could maybe find a more reasonable solution.  Called about ten different spots, found the only place that I could get them RIGHT NOW, instead of having to pre order.

This is my spot for specialty stuff.  The seafood is pretty well-priced, too.  But I can't get over the fact that I had a regular shopping list and I couldn't get a bunch of regular stuff last time I was here.  They didn't even have green onions.

Mollie earned some major points with me this weekend.

So I was looking for a whole goose the other day for a pre-Thanksgiving Thanksgiving Dinner.  Why a goose?  Well, it's bigger than a chicken or a duck yet smaller than a Turkey and would go well with the crabs we also planned to cook for our Pre-TG TG dinner.

The menu was set.  All I needed to do was find the goose.  The morning before, I called Whole Foods - they have a recipe for roast goose on the website - but no, they did not carry geese at this time.  So then I called good ol' Mollie.  At the off-chance, and lo-and-behold, not only did they check for me in the freezer upstairs, but they actually remembered to call me back and let me know they had one, AND take it out and let it defrost for me so I could pick it up that night and be ready to rumble.  The plan went off without a hitch, and I picked up a defrosted goose that night after work.

As a side note, if you're ever looking to buy a whole goose, and you're calling around looking to procure a goose from a nearby butcher, just say "Hi, I'm looking to make roast goose for dinner; do you sell whole ones?"  I only say this because asking, "Do you carry geese?" is just going to make you giggle on the phone.

While expensive, Mollie Stone's has some great things about it worth going to. For example, their produce (organic and non-) is excellent (as is the presentation) and their butchers are very helpful and friendly - if meat/seafood is your thing. I have also noticed that the cashiers are very friendly- Mollie Stone's must be a good company to work for. I would save the toilet paper and dish-washing detergent kind of purchases for Walgreens or Target, however, you'll save quite a bit.

I also think the free ride home (if you spend like $30) is an awesome touch. You just wait under the awning in the parking lot for the van to show every 20 mins or so. The driver is very friendly and has his own health tips worth listening to if you wish to chat him up.

5 Super Rockstars!!

Mollie Stone made my Thanksgiving possible, AMAZING and the best I ever had...

Instead of learning how to cook a bird in 24 hours, my coworker told me about her experience with the juicy bird she had last year. And I did order the whole 12-14 pound turkey, which I had to cancel and get just the breasts because it was only for a couple people. The store was kind enough to let us cancel the order... or we would be having Thanksgiving until the next one comes around!

While it's precooked, with about 30 minutes of reheating in the oven in addition to all the sides they also offered-- stuffed breading, cranberry orange walnut relish, sweet mashed potatoes, roasted butter squash with walnuts, corn bread, dinner rolls, baby spinach with dressing included, and of course, the best part was the gravy.

EVERYTHING was perfect!!! Every bite was juicy, moist, soft and tender that has awakened all my hunger, thirst and desiring sensations. The Goats Do Roam white wine was cute, inexpensive, and was perfect pairing for the dishes!

Believe me, even everything was precooked, as my cutie guy joked, "well, we are still cooking, just the second time of cooking!" Not only did it save us so much time after a full day of hiking, it created the atmosphere of every signature dish you can imagine at the Thanksgiving table, warm, cozy, delicious, and not crazily spending whole day between 2 inexperienced cooks but somewhat experienced food critics haha...

There's only 1 small mishap, we thought we picked up some pumpkin pie as we so certainly believed it was that we bought two of them. After 30% of the *pie* was transferring down to our happy stomachs, we realized we had actually been eating Carrot Souffle that tasted like yam! hmmm... still very good, just unexpected.

Mollie Stone has also made the experience all wonderful as we were up on the coast where grocery stores were minimal. We bought the whole feast the night before and reheating did not take away any juice or flavours or add any other odd taste. We fully enjoyed the super-licious dishes in our cabin while listening to the crashing waves against the cliff and the propane fireplace bursting its fire tongue.

My heartfelt kudos to Mollie Stone!! And I definitely have something to be thankful for at this unforgettable and unique Thanksgiving!!!

In order to qualify as a delicious turkey sammich, the following ingredients are needed:

smoked turkey
cheddar
spicy mustard
avocado
lettuce
bread

They didn't put the cheese which I had paid extra for on my sammich.  UNFORGIVABLE.

When I am feeling to broke from Whole Foods, overwhelmed by frozen pasta from TJs, and angered at Safeway heirloom tomatoes I turn to Mollie Stones. My saving grace, a happy medium that breaks up my grocery shopping. A bit cheaper and with wider isles than the anorexic Whole Foods on California, you will still experience a mild amount of sticker shock and cart bumpage.

Mollie Stone's is good for the stone fruit, pre-made dinners and butcher. Find single servings of Jerk Chicken and Mollie's Meatloaf below the viewing window. Mollie's Meatloaf is your own personal brick of lamb and beef love. Deli is a bit of a chaotic scene. Sometimes they use numbers, most times they do not. Like today when I pulled #87 and they were on #67. Standing there like an idiot I saw the expensive selection, ditched the number and bought prepackaged meat.

Cannot beat that...

I just discovered this market and although it is a little overpriced in some areas, it is very fun. It has the biggest cheese selection that I have ever seen. It has every cheese that you could ever imagine or want. It also has a good deli selection, although the lady that was working at the deli counter when I was there was way too intense. A few people were looking and deciding what they wanted and she kept insisting that we take numbers and was yelling all the numbers out at us. I didn't even see a place to grab a number. It wasn't crowded at all and it didn't seem like anyone was in a hurry or ready besides the lady behind the counter. She needed to chill out.

Moving along, they also have an open salad bar which is nice for single salads.  quickly browsed through the wine section, but it looks like they had a good selection for a variety of prices. Starbucks is also right in the entryway of mollies, so you can grab a coffee and shop. I would definitely like to go back and explore more.

I also have to mention that the cashier that I had was very friendly! Unlike the deli lady.

When it comes to food shopping, I belong to a few different schools of thinking. There is the ghetto shopping run, where I am there to stock up on stuff that I really should be eating. Things we all have cravings for like cheese-infused hot dogs and pizza rolls (Hmm, that might just be me?). Then there's the healthy shopping where it's organic this and organic that and it's a fun little trip filled with buying and trying new things and perusing the aisles and reading packaging. Then there is the what the hell is wrong with me shopping where I spend far too much money at a "gourmet" market and love every minute of it. Mollie Stone's is definitely the last one.

This store is expensive, but it is also filled with fabulously yummy items that sometimes you just need to spend money on. Things like delicious cheeses that you can bet your Grandma's razor scooter that you won't find at Safeway. Things like kitchen utensils that you definitely won't find at any normal market. And a meat counter with a totally friendly female butcher. Not every day that you see that. It's also the kinda store where the ingredients for a caprese appetizer and a lasagna totaled over $75.00.

But damn was the lasagna friggin deelish!

It's a glamorized Safeway! I always thought  Mollie Stone's was considered a specialty chain, but I was extremely disappointed with their selection, shelf organization, and value when I moseyed on in for a bag of Pamela's frosting mix.  Not only did they not carry the frosting mix, but their organic baking flour was priced 20% higher than Whole Foods for the same exact item.  I was also confused as to why they decided to stock pine nuts in the baking aisle sandwiched between 2  boxes of baking mix.  It looked completely out of place.

I have high expectations for specialty stores, but Mollie Stones has failed to meet the criteria.  Why would any health conscious person want to shop here if 80% of the brands they carry are mainstream and can be found at your local Safeway & even 7 Eleven!  I left and went to Whole Foods instead which is only a short drive away.  I will never come here again.

Molly's host a good variety in a compact store, however the prices are in the range of Whole Foods so it may not be the wisest to do all your shopping at this stop.  Recommendation; take-out salad bar, good cheese selection, and great to grab an upper end essential.  But pick up milk and staples down the road at Safeway to save a few dollars.

I'm here at the salad bar with ambivalence every week before a local appointment. Love the parking and the ease of check-out. The salad bar could be better/fresher/organic-er but it's still okay (better than middle America grocery, but not Whole Foods/Wild Oats).

Regardless, I continue to come here weekly and do love the convenience. I think their advertising about being the medium between Safeway and Whole Foods is accurate. You can find your organics, but also your regular old environmental pollutants such as bleach, unrecycled toilet paper, etc.

Cute grocery store, with ridiculously inflated prices. Hmm... I think their deli bar and soups and salads are really really good. You know what I really liked? They have the nutritional information for the soups right next to the soup bar! I can't even find that at Whole Foods. Not that I'm really into nutrition and all that, but it's just nice to have the option to see what all the ingredients are JUST IN CASE.

If you're trying to get regular run of the mill groceries go somewhere else. Molly Stone's seems to have a somewhat decent selection, but it's really limited and way overpriced! They have a pretty random selection of hard-to-find stuff, but if you're just there to get a bag of coffee or something, try some other store.

THE GOOD:  The selection is fantastic for cheese, bakery goods, and meat & poultry.  The hot prepared food is tasty, fresh and convenient.  Produce is decent.  Everything is neatly organized and the service is great.  Just wish the aisles were a little wider.   Oh yeah, they offer shuttle service for their local customers which is great since traffic in that area is hectic.

THE BAD:  The prices.  I guess there is a premium you must pay when you shop in this neck of the woods.  But really you shouldn't be surprised, after all it is 94115.   And you must consider that the shuttle service will offset the few extra cents you pay for milk and potato bread. Anyway avoid the ordinary/everyday items here and you'll be fine.

THE UGLY:  The customers.  Damn airheaded-no-manner bimbos love this place.  They are rude, crude, and lewd.  Go back in your X5 where you came from!

Molly's gets five stars for their tremendous sandwiches at the deli bar, but they lose one star because the prices are astronomical and the foot traffic patterns are crazy.

I like you can go in and grab a homemade picnic in ten minutes.  For groceries and regular shopping, I stock up at Safeway or Smart & Final, but I like Molly's grocery section for all the odd stuff, special brands, and great frozen section.

Produce is generally good, although also more expensive than Safeway; however, for just a nice apple or peach, why not?

Have you tried Molly's soups?  They're great.

And the bakery/dessert section has a wide variety.  Given the proximity of other bakeries in the neighborhood where they actually bake on premises, I don't really stop at the bakery counter much, but the few things I've tried were good.

And I thought Whole Foods was pricey.  This place makes Whole Foods seem as economical as Costco!  Nonetheless, if you desperately need some groceries, here is an option, but your wallet will pay dearly for whatever you buy.

Yes - I am reviewing a grocery store.  But this is the type of grocery store where they do seriously know your name and what you like.  The customer service here is top notch - they are friendly and quick.  This is not Safeway where you're just another receipt.  I always get a great conversation in with the staff, be it at the meat counter, the deli, the aisles, or the check out line.  Oh, and James in the express line is a sweetheart.

I love that they have a great selection of imports AND local stuff.  There is this AMAZING organic orange juice that doesn't have a name or a label, but it's just like drinking a pure orange.   They had some really interesting gourmet sea salt as well that I didn't see elsewhere.  The meat selection is top notch, and they'll patiently discuss with you what they have, what they recommend, etc.

They only get four stars though because they are more expensive then Safeway or Lucky's, but considering the quality, the service, the selection and the clientèle that it's serving, it's great.

This is like going to safeway without the club card benefits..

Things are over priced, but i guess you pay more to stay away shopping from the "lower class" citizens...

I only come here for emergencies.....and to stay away from the minorities...lol..wait a sec

One night I went to a black tie event and got incredibly drunk. Somehow I made it home, only to find out that I was locked out of my house. I, drunk in a long black gown, had to kick in the door to my laundry room, get into the back yard, climb up the fire escape and then ram my shoulder into my deck doors until they opened. I woke up the next morning to the sound of my extra cell phone ringing - my roommate informed me that I had lost my regular cell phone the night before, but some nice Asian woman with a really thick accent and limited English found it and was calling me on the extra phone after she took her family to church. I looked out on my front porch and saw my shoes and my bag, which was open and had money falling out of it. A little while later, the woman who found my phone called and asked me to meet her at the Starbucks inside of Mollie Stone's.

I got there, met the woman, her daughter and her granddaughter. I tried to give them a monetary reward for my phone, but they refused. The woman just gave me a look like "please, for the love of God, my granddaughter just came from church and doesn't need to inhale any more of the alcohol burning out of your toxic system right now, so please leave before you scar her for the rest of her life." She was a nice lady and deserves a million stars.

Unfortunately, this review is not about the nice woman who found my phone (which, incidentally, was a block and a half from my house - and I took a cab home that night, so that will remain one of life's great mysteries). This review is for that hellhole of an overpriced, selection deprived market. Don't even bother, it sucks. The meat is decent, but only worth it if Cal-Mart and Bryans are both closed.

Shop the meat counter!  Very nice, clean and helpful.  I shop this store weekly on a budget with their weekly flyer available on line and via e-mail.  Or just grab it by the front door as you go in.  Their produce is also excellent.  They have lots of things like kitchen tools, wine, etc.  Besides the meat counter, I also love the DOOR TO DOOR service...after you buy your groceries, they have a van leaving every 30-45 minutes or so...that will take you HOME to your front door!  Great people, great service and good food.  Go there and they'll take you home!

Molly will take you for everything you're worth, but at least she'll give you a lift home when she's done. Molly gets 4 stars for the salad bar, the prepared foods, cheese selection, and the shuttle. Plus, her proximity to my place means I have an alternative to Crack-Central-Safeway for those days when I'm just not quite up for all that excitement.

Get the prepared beet salad (don't even look at the price), grab a chicken burrito (I AM on a burrito kick this week), and make yourself a nice, big salad that will set you back $13 but will make your tummy sing. Grab some cheese while you're at it (there's a huge selection, a little more pricey than Whole foods and not as many choices), some Acme bread, and you're good to go.

Now, walk your items up to the very friendly, very flirtatious checker, plug your ears, and hand over your credit  card. Sign and leave. What you don't know can't hurt you and you are now cleared to enjoy your delicious snacks, free of pesky buyers' remorse. If you live in the hood, wait for Molly to pick you up and shuttle you home. OK, it won't be Molly, but the drivers are always really nice anyway.

As a lover of fine cheeses my very favorite Gouda happens to be found at this oasis of fine foods, but last night on a 10-second, $10-dollar trip to Mollie's I regretfully paid more than $2.50 for a single piece of fruit. I just cant feel good about a grocery store that makes me question the purchase of a pear!
Fruit lovers and claustrophobics beware.
