I have lived in Southern California for nearly all of my life so I have had Mexican food at a lot of different places. This place is my favorite ever. They have, by far, the best REAL Mexican food I have ever had.
Taquitos- awesome
Tacos- amazing
Floutas- BOMB DIGGITY!!!
Love this place, reasonable prices and amazing food. I usually walk in an just order the special, because no matter what you order it will be delicious! -

id probably say 3.5. good flavors but the pastor was unimpressive at the end of the day.
tasty salsa. would go back if in the area and try something different. -

Great little hole in the wall. Staff is very friendly. You order at the counter and they bring your grub to you.
I had the two beef tacos combo. Comes with rice and beans. The hard shells on these tacos are quite good. Crunchy and not too greasy. The meat was juicy and flavorful. The beans were okay and the rice was fluffy.
Prior to your meal coming out, you are brought chips and salsa in a stone bowl. The stone bowl is called molcajete in Spanish and thus the name of this joint. The salsa had some flavor and kick to it.
No booze here, but there is a bar a couple doors down and there is also a 7-Eleven in the same lot. A flask will take care of all your booze problems. -

Wasn't impressed. Carne asada was chewy, beans had an odd flavor, and enchillada sauce tasted like it came from a can.
Have to borrow a key to use their restroom. No beer/wine license. No need to return. -

Drove around, starving, and stumbled upon this place.
Burritos and tacos weren't too bad, although the fish taco needed to be fried a bit crispier. This place did have free chips and salsa though.....and the salsa was DELCIOUS. Fresh and tasty, with a major spicy kick to it. -

Love the chips n salsa here! The shredded beef soft taco is the bomb. I've been going to their chain of restaurants (Fiesta Grill) in huntington beach for over 10 years.

I was craving Mexican food one Monday night and wanted to try something new. Sure, I could've gone to Alerto's or Alberto's for something quick & satisfying, but I wanted some place I could sit down and relax. Saw the reviews on Yelp and thought... hey, it's down the street & it's got 4 stars. Could be decent! Wow... it wasn't. I ordered the "super deluxe wet burrito" with carnitas, and my company ordered 2 hard shell tacos. The chips were stale but the salsa was good. Very rich in onions though. Our meals came out in to-go boxes as per our request because it was 8:20pm and I didn't want to bother them so close to closing (which was at 9pm) in case we didn't finish our meals.
The red sauce that was poured over the top of my burrito tasted like boiled spaghettios sauce and it was so hot that it had turned the guacamole into runny green goo. It also softened/moistened the tortilla into disgusting mush that was almost impossible to cut with the flimsy plastic disposable utensils they provided :( The outside being a hot mess... I took a knife and fork to it to find out what was inside. Well... it was cold!!! The beans, rice, cheese, and meat were ALL COLD. I guess they thought the heated sauce would warm the inside.. uh.. not even close. & the carnitas was way over seasoned.
The hardshell tacos were decent (I didn't eat them but that's what I gathered). Very small, but that's expected. They came with rice and beans. The beans looked like brownish gray mush & were grainy in texture (probably would've been happier with refried beans from a can), but the rice was decent (pretty hard to mess up rice). In short... left with my burrito practically in tact and unsatisfied.
If this were based solely on my meal, I'd give it 1 star. But the hardshell tacos were decent so I guess 2 stars is warranted. In any case.. I won't be coming back here. -

Another place that just does pico de gallo. Where is the hot, spicy seeded red sauce at sit down restaurants? I blame the owner listening too much to white people (or maybe he or she is caucasian).
It's actually has some decent food and service, but the pico de gallo just kills it for me. Wake up! -

Overall, a 3.5 - 4 star. "What made the difference between 4 & 5?" you ask? Well, the food was good but not amazing, the service was ok, the place was tiny.
The good is, you order at the counter like a fast food joint but they serve you a big hot plate of food like a nice sit down joint. Also, the serve you chips and salsa while you wait at your table which is cool and the salsa has a nice kick. Points for that or sure. I will definitely go back some day. -

Anybody that says the food here is "just ok" is lame! They have clearly been eating too much tack bell! This place rocks! Go there and find out for yourself!!!

Review from Dan H.
It's Christmas week! That means different things to different people. To me it means champagne, multiple calls to relatives/friends back home, gettin together with friends for good food/drink, and tamales.
Paid another visit to my local Mexican joint for the required Comida de Navidad. Damn good, not as great as the homemade versions of my Mexican friends but satiated the holiday jones. I ordered the tamale combo w/ beef, came with rice and beans, chips, and their killer homemade salsa, a tad spicier this time, perfect.
The rice is always perfectly cooked, but the beans were unusually runny. The combo was $7.95 for 2 huge tamales + the aforementioned accompaniments. Wash it all down with the Jarritos soda (no cerveza) of your choice and you will be one happy amigo/amiga.
Feliz Navidad and a Feliz Año Nuevo to all!!1 Previous Review: Show all »

By far my favorite Mexican spot.
You come in,order at the front, choose your drink of choice, soda fountain, horchata, or bottled Jarritos! Find a place to sit, As they bring over a complimentary basket of chips and the best homemade salsa your taste buds may ever have the pleasure of coming into contact with.
Everything I have tried here has been exquisite. From the Sopes to the taco salads, chimichangas, taquitos, enchiladas, etc. They even have chile relleno burritos! A plethora of heavenly eats.
Another thing i should mention is their friendly employees. I have never detected any attitude from anyone. It's always very refreshing when you don't have to worry about someone handling your food inappropriately.
But if i could only mention one thing about this place( fortunately, that's not the case) It would have to be their rice and beans. Hands down. Never have i encountered rice and beans quite like this. Sometimes i think my boyfriend would even pick them over sex, if he was faced with that ultimatum. But i don't think i could blame him.
So if you're ever in the mood for an authentic, inexpensive, friendly, delicious little mexican eatery, Molcajete grill is where it's at! -

I give this one 3.5 stars. Great specials in this little strip mall restaurant, often around 6 bucks. The burritos are real good, and so are most of the combos. Good salsa and chips, and the tacos are pretty good. Carmitas combo is strong. The inside is not real big, so I usually take out here. They do accept credit cards, which is a plus.
The only thing that perplexes me is that I don't see molcajete items listed on the menu, like I do elsewhere (Los Compadres in Long Beach comes to mind). I guess that's a good excuse to go back and ask about them. -

Costa Mesa, CA
The person who wrote a one star review is way way off base. I live in the westside of costa mesa and frequent santa ana at least once a month and this is no typical "surfer burrito" place.
Almost all of their menu items come with a somewhat spicy salsa in them so if you don't want your food spicy make sure that they hold the salsa.
1. The chile rellano burrito is fantastic. Rarely do you get to have one. My co-workers love this burrito.
2. My wife LOVES their veggie tacos.
3. Their heuvos rancheros are different then most. They have big slices of onions and bell pepper in the sauce and the sauce is darker than most. They are my favorite hands-down.
4. Their al pastor chicken tacos are good good good.
I like their fresh salsa and most everything is good, but trust me and get one of the items above.
PS they have real coke with real sugar in the cold box behind the counter. -

The cheese enchilladas are amazing and the rice and beans as well
Nothing spectacular but definitely a nice hole in the wall place to have lunch -

INCREDIBLE. Best authentic Mexican food in California. (Other than Fiesta Grill on 17th because it's the same menu and owners!)
I might choose the carnitas taco as my last meal and the refried beans are to die for. When family and friends come to town they make sure we hit up Molcajete! -

Great food everytime. We've been to hundreds of taco places in SoCal and this place still has the best carnitas tacos around.

This place is pretty good. It's super simple, fast, easy and cheap. I would highly recommend this place if you're just looking for something mellow that also happens to taste good.
Last night, I ate a beef taco, an enchilada, rice, beans, chips and a drink for 6.75. Can't beat it.
Definitely worth a try. -

Great spot, I had driven by it about a dozen times but had never actually stopped in. Well, i've gone back about 3x's this month, great little mexican place, with some of the best Al Pastor i've had!!!
I recommend getting a menu and calling ahead if possible, the wait can be lengthy. -

Very friendly & helpful staff, phenomenal food. Just about everything we had was fabulous. The tamales & green chile pork (chile verde) were by far our favorite. Salsa was great. Looking forward to spreading the word and heading here again. If they had beer, we'd be here every night.

Ordered the flautas again and they're simply the best. Better than all the rest. Got the food pretty quick. The thing I like about this place is that they're in the entertainment book and its pretty much a buy one get one free. No hassles, no dirty looks. Yet, I always tip 3-4 X, so I don't feel too cheap. Flautas and rice and beans were great, even though rice and beans are pretty much the same wherever you go. Ate all the food and it filled me up. No waiting, never seems busy at the place. I'll be back!

Really great food, fast service, chips & salsa while you wait. My boyfriend eats here several times a week because he has the metabolism of a 16 year old, I do not, so I make it in there with him about twice a month.

Great for the price. Tasty salsa! After 3 years of eating here, we've yet to be dissapointed with anything on the menu. We've also done take-out for a few large parties. Always gotten our order right and on time for pick up.
