Review from Casey S.
We stumbled into Moki's Halloween evening and between the day of the week (Monday) and the hordes of family's trick or treating on the sidewalk, the place was pretty empty, which worked out great for us.
The staff was friendly and attentive, our water glasses never went empty, which I love about a restaurant. We ordered the ahi tuna spring roll, which was just okay. It didn't have much tuna and the flavors weren't that great.
We ordered 3 rolls:
Volcano Roll, Rip Tide Roll and Kona Roll. All were well executed. My favorite was the rip tide, my boyfriend's favorite was the Volcano. I would write more, but, unfortunately I waited too long to write this review. I just remember them being delicious. -

Ha. Tonite after dinner I told my wife this is the last time I'm going to Moki's for a while. I'd rather hike down the hill (and schlep back up) to Ichi's where the value is much better.
So as I sat down to write this review I had to laugh that the dish that inspired me to write this subpar review is the same as the review on 11/3 - the lackluster, undersized, and overpriced mahi-mahi at $18. I ordered it medium; I wouldn't expect it dry, and the pieces were TINY. There was about 2 oz of mashed potatoes and a quarter head of spinach. Come on!
I could deal with portions this small if the food was off the charts, but it's not. -

Hmmmm...I'm always disappointed when the check comes.
i got the "special" mahi mahi tonight at $18, with spinach and wasabi mashed potatoes. the fish was super stinky and full of huge bones. the sweet chili sauce was not hot, but ok.
my beef is with the two-tablespoon serving of wasabi mashed taters, served in a dipping sauce tin. they offer a HUGE side for $3. we also ordered two cali rolls and a special maki (at $10something), and the kidz' size salmon (which is what I should have gotten cuz it was yummy), and edamame. we all left hungry (this was me and two kids under 10).
granted, the manager always hooks me up with a shot of saki while i am waiting, which is nice. he is the best thing about this place. but the prices are just getting out of control. -

whats going on with this place? we are a regular here and i noticed on my last trip that the rice on the nigiri got a bit larger. I went again last night and yes its confirmed by everyone at the table that the rice on nigiri sushi did get bigger and the fish got smaller/thinner.
Maybe we should come back after the recession is over?1 Previous Review: Show all »

Recently, I found myself at Moki's, in Bernal Heights, a hood I'd previously never ventured to in my 5 years in SF. (Had to look it up on a map). What stuck me at first: children in a restaurant at SF! I mean, I've seen strollers around Pac Whites, but these were actually "kids" around 6-10. Strange sight. Clearly, I am still not over it. It was a novelty to see! Have been back to Moki's about 3 times since.
Cute little neighborhood joint. Despite the number of kids, it still manages to pass muster for date night, w/the dim lighting and dark wood tables. The place is usually full on Fridays/Saturdays but the wait isn't that bad. The food was fairly decent each time, best described as Japanese w/a California/Hawaii twist. There are rolls (creative and your traditional rolls) as well as small plates to share. And random-ish things like baby back ribs. Have always enjoyed everything I've ordered.
A word on prices: maybe it is just me, but I thought that Moki's was rather expensive for a neighborhood resto. (And this is coming from a gal used to Pac Heights prices.) -

Came in for a quick meal and wanted to give the folks at Moki a shout out.
-Fresh fish
-Neighborhood charm
-Friendly staff
-No wait
-Not a wallet breaker
I ordered three rolls (refer to pic):
-Spider roll: Tobiko, veggies and softshell crab. The piece on the left had a huge piece of softshell crab, was one big mouthful!
-Spicy Tuna: the spicy mayo is so good.. seems like a blend of mayo/sriracha
-Rock and roll: not your typical rock and roll, Moki throws in Hamachi (in addition to Unagi) which adds a different flavor. -

Okay, so Joann and I went to pick up Cholo, at first it was just Cholo and me who will have dinner but since Joann will come with me instead of David we decided to make everyone happy by asking where they want to dine instead...
Cholo and Joann asked me to pick...so I picked Japanese, and Cholo suggested this Sushi Place at Bernal Heights.
I ordered the Sashimi Platter (yes 15 pieces of raw but fresh fish), Cholo ordered Baby Back Ribs (seriously at a Japanese Rest) and Joann ordered Sushi Roll (its fried, i forgot what its called). We had seaweed salad and edamame for appetizers.
Cholo kept hoping and asking if I like the place since he suggested it.
Its all good I said, the Servers were extra pleasant and always smiling and asking if we need anything and I like that.
So were full and off to 7Mile to watch my cousins' band perform.
Will definitely come back. -

MMmm-Moki's is one of my favorite little sushi spots. Tucked out of the way of busy Mission and across town from Japan Town - I'm lucky to have this little spot in Bernal.
I always come here with my best friend Rosy, we like the same things but always add in something different so we can try something new. It was a cold night outside, so we go with the hot sake.
We ordered the Grilled Hamachi Cheeks special, Salmon Sashimi and Seaweed Salad. Everything started coming out of the kitchen in a stream, steadily replacing plates of sushi. I like a lot of Wasabi.
Yummm. Round 2 or 4 or ? Plates are being arranged on our table like Tetris. We order a few more rolls, the Ecstasy was my favorite. The Drum Roll was my crab roll of the night and did not disappoint. The Special Roll of the Day was good, but I can't remember what was in it.
Once again our eyes were bigger than our stomachs and had to take the rest to-go. I hate doing that because leftover sushi isn't the same. -

Came here for dinner with a friend last night after a failed previous attempt (showed up at 9:55, and the sign says closing time is 10:30, but the door was already locked and the place emptied).
Decor has a combined South Pacific/Japanese feel, what with the throwback Pan Am posters. Very pleasant.
Ordered:
Kamikaze Roll (Salmon and shrimp)
Unagi Nigiri
Grilled Hamachi cheek
Carafe of warm sake + 2 Sapporos
Total check was something like $56, very reasonable.
The Sapporos were my idea, since (Asian fail moment) I'm apparently unable to tolerate sake's taste by itself. Unagi was sweet and soft, right on the spot. And the Hamachi (Yellowtail) cheek--which I only ordered given the big deal made about fish cheeks in Hannibal Rising--was a surprisingly large portion, served on a bed of garden greens. The best description my friend and I collectively came up with was "steaky not fishy". And that's exactly it.
If you're near the Bernal area and need your Sushi fix, this is the place to go.Comment from Loulie g. of Moki's Sushi & Pacific Grill 7/21/2011

It's hard to find a place that has both good omnivore and veggie options and this place has great vegetarian rolls! The Bernal Roll, Futomaki, and grilled shitake rolls were delicious! Mmmm... tasty. Although I didn't eat any of the fish type of rolls, others in my party said it was good. Staff was wonderful and friendly. Street parking was easy to find or you can take bus # 24. Cute little neighborhood restaurant and I'd definitely come back!

I LOVE THIS PLACE. The food is high quality and very tasty. I can honestly say that the Gindara is my favorite. I also recommend the Kona roll! OMG... Plus the desserts! The fried banana was so good bc unlike the normal fried banana you can get everywhere, they coat the crust with some caramel and nuts! Yummy!
I would have given 5 stars but I don't like that they don't take reservations because I would like to bring a big group over and the last time I went, they ran out of the Gindara! And that's why I went there! Not good!
But I highly recommend this restaurant for those craving Japanese food with a Hawaiian twist! -

After I almost broke my neck on a piece of what I would call lettuce I would say the food was okay and I would return. Luckily my cat-like reflexes saved me from hitting the floor in my stiletto's. What made it even better was when a woman yelled out SAFE!
We ordered the ribs for our 6 year old son and they were great. My husband and I ordered the dinner plate of grilled salmon and rice which was okay. I am sure weight watchers wouldn't be mad. The california rolls were good but not the best. I would order them again though.
I have to say the fried bananna's wraped in Lumpia rolls served with a side of ice cream was AWESOME. The dessert was the best part of the meal. I loved the atmosphere and it was kid friendly. I pretended to be on a date with just my husband by keeping one eye closed so I couldn't see my son : ). A great nite at a cool spot. -

Miso soup is some of the best and the closest in the US to the authentic I've had while visiting Japan. Haven't quite explored the "pacific grill" section of the menu, but I really don't need to. The sushi is some of the best I've ever had, and to give some context: Sushi is my favorite way to eat.
They have the best sushi roll I've ever had in my life: The Ecstasy Roll. As cliche as it sounds, go here and try it; Once with the vinegar sauce that comes with it, once without any sauce, and once with a soy sauce and wasabi mixture, in any order you wish. Finish off the plate with your favorite. You won't be disappointed.
The only reason it loses a star is that in my last visit I had the spicy tuna roll, and the maguro cut seemed a little below par, most likely cause it's one of the more ordered plates, along with them possibly hoping the spicy sauce would cover up and quality of the cut. Or maybe I'm just crazy. -

Went to Moki based on the good reviews on yelp. Don't always believe the hype.
Pros
1. Nice to have a trendy sushi spot on bernal heights
2. Creative menu
Cons
1. Although the menu was creative, the flavors and food just doesn't work
2. You expect sushi to be fresh......
3. Over priced
Conclusion
Avoid at all cost. -

Mokis is hands down my FAVORITE place to get sushi in San Francisco. I have been over 10 times and it just keeps getting better and better. The fish is always fresh and if you don't like seafood or rolls, there's an extensive menu with options for all you vegetarians out there. There's also a wide variety of sake's for a pretty affordable price.
Wait staff is friendly, service is top-notch, and the ambiance is makes it a suitable place for date night or family dinner. If you haven't been, check it out ASAP! -

It was a showery night (is that even a word? lol), we were looking for a good sushi restaurant to go to - just a spare the moment type. We found this place because it was the only one that was still open on a late night say 9ish?
Got seated and wasn't crowded at all. We ordered our appetizers as always, they forgot my miso soup which was a bad thing because that's my favorite of all time?! Lol so I was a bit disappointed considering they weren't busy.
The sushi roll we ordered was good but the service was bad - we have to wait for about 10 minutes to get another order. This happened almost 5x. Waited & waited! Even when we were just waiting for the check - it took forever to get anyone's attention - they were all in that little area (must be the I want to go home now area because it's almost closing time?).
So, overall I like their food 4 out of 5. The service sucked bad so I'll give it a 1.5 out of 5. -

Like everyone else I'm going to chime in and say the salmon ceviche roll is the roll to get if you are a fan of sushi. Everything else I had was good, but paled in comparison once I had a bite of this roll. Yeah, it is *that* good, or at least I happen to think it's that good (and we all know I'm always right, right?). Parking is what is in SF, I've gotten lucky and managed to score spots across the street.
Bottom line: Salmon ceviche roll = amazing. -

The appetizers were good, but unfortunately the sushi rice was warm. Very unappetizing. Ugh. Any place that serves sushi should know how to make good sushi rice. It is unfortunate because the ingredients all seemed fresh.

This is the only sushi place up on Cortland Ave, but the flavors are still crisp, especially given that there weren't any Japanese chefs or waitstaff..
The rolls are moderately priced, but higher than I liked.
The ambiance of the place was a little dark to me, but the decor was nice. If the door is open, it's difficult to eat and savor anything because the restaurant gets a
bit nipply...
As for the actual food, I liked that the ingredients were fresh and the spiciness of my roll was just right. I don't have any examples, but I remembered that the rolls have interesting names, too. We had quite a chuckle about some of them.
Strangely, the seemingly tiny amount of sushi filled us up to a comfortable level, as we opted out not to get dessert.
Overall, the restaurant works well as a sushi restaurant, but the waiters and the other customers seemed cold and a bit elitist. I'm not racist, but most of the customers were not Asian, and they eyed us like we were in the wrong place. I probably wouldn't recommend this place to anyone unless you're desperate for sushi and are stranded on Cortland (which was partly the reason why we picked this restaurant).
Oh, and watch out for the mint leaves. Apparently the roll my friend ordered had mostly these mint leaves, and he couldn't finish them because the flavor was too overpowering. -

We've been here twice so far and are big fans! Finally got my boyfriend to try sushi and he liked it. The fried calamari is great. The service is pretty good, but not fantastic. The wine list is pretty limited. Overall, very happy this place is in our new 'hood.

I've been coming here for the last 8 years possibly longer but after last nights dinner we have sworn off this place and will never be going back.
I have two words for you that will sum up our dining experience here last night:
FOOD POISONING.
The fish was not fresh. The spicy tuna roll smelled like spoiled rotten fish. There's one thing you don't want in this life and that's food poisoning from sushi. As soon as I realized that the roll smelled funky I immediately told the waiter (the service was great, very friendly and accommodating). He then took the roll back to the kitchen and took it off our bill. I later turned around to see the New Owner/Chef talking down to our waiter. It looked like our waiter was being reprimanded for taking back our sushi!!! We were less then pleased with the sushi we had last night. This place use to be one of our favorite sushi places and we have always recommended it to friends but after last night's disgusting dinner we will never dine there again. -

Decidedly non-traditional and intentionally not. Way better than CCS. In fact, despite their efforts to be non-traditional, they're much closer to traditional than CCS and better tasting.
The ownership is changing, so we'll see how it may or may not change. (oops I started this update a month or two ago.)

I hate sushi. Seriously, it's gross and boring and involves dead, uncooked fishies. But at Moki's they understand me! They have creative, scrumptious options for us vegetable-munchers, and plenty more besides just rolls. The Bernal roll is crunchy heaven. The coconut tofu had me drooling all over myself. The baby greens salad with candied pecans and grapefruit was incredibly delicious. On top of it all, the service was impeccable.
I love you, Moki's! -

I'm pretty certain this is the closest sushi place to my house. Therefore I wish it were better than it is, but it's pretty good. The albacore was very tasty, which is one of my benchmarks. The Unagi was fine, (another benchmark of mine) .
The night I was there they had hamachi kama on special. Hamachi kama is one of my favorite things, so I had to get it. At first they told me it was sold out, but then they miraculously found another one, so I was able to partake. Sadly it was only mediocre in quality - still good, but I've certainly had better.
My father thoroughly enjoyed his grilled salmon. And my vegetarian friend devoured her Coconut Fried Tofu - and was also pleased that there was more than kappa maki and rice for her to eat.
Overall, perhaps a 3.5 for my one and only visit, but it was intriguing enough that I will go back, and I think it has potential to rise to 4 stars. -

Ah, sushi. On those rare occasions where your wallet is feeling fashionably large and your appetite fashionably small, nothing else will do.
Moki's has got to be the most Seattle-esque restaurant I've yet been to in SF. Exhibit A: they call it a "Pacific Grill". Exhibit B: the wood-heavy look of the front. Exhibit C: the mellow-modern interior decorated with Pacific Rim posters and statues. Kind of makes me nostalgic.
Sure, there's non-sushi here (via the "Pacific Grill"), and lots of basic cut rolls that are surprisingly cheap. But the focus is clearly on the high-end, creative cut rolls (the "Specialty Maki" menu). You can't go wrong with a dish named after the restaurant, and sure enough, the Moki's roll was the highlight. Whatever your fancy, you're sure to find something neat, especially if you crave hot and spicy everything, like me.
Good food, good decor, reasonably priced for what it is, and in one of my favorite neighborhoods to boot...could easily add up to 5 stars, but man, the sushi took forever to come out, especially considering that it's, y'know, sushi (and believe me, on the spectrum of restaurant patrons, I'm pretty damn patient). So I'll hold on to that last star till they get that worked out.Listed in: Bernal Heights &…

San Francisco, CA
The chunks of coconut tofu were heavenly (who knew fried tofu could taste sooo good?!), the Bernal Roll was tasty, and my dining companion enjoyed his salmon rolls and calamari; food wise, it's thumbs up, all around.
Service was fine, though, a bit awkward. Dishes came out quick, and water glasses were promptly filled. Our waitress was gracious and helpful, but towards the end, I felt rushed--not so much to leave the restaurant, but to clear the table, because there were several other tables occupied, all with diners finished eating long ago that were still there when we arrived and when we left that weren't being bothered in the slightest to leave. They state their closing time as 10:30, but if you expect to come here for a late dinner, know that their "Closed" sign flips once it's 10 p.m..
Located in Bernal Heights, I enjoy the local feel of Moki's. But neighborhood haunts usually translate to a packed house, even on a weeknight. And when it's packed, it can be noisy. I'm not a big sushi fan to begin with (pre and post-vegetarian), but from what my taste buds have experienced, the food is good enough to ensure a repeat visit. -

Yum.
Moki's is my new favorite sushi place. The ambiance is cozy, cool, and inviting. I understand this is a new location and you'd never know that because the flow of dinner was perfect.
Everyone working was friendly and attentive. We were not rushed. A cool family atmosphere. I hear people call Bernal Hill Maternal Hill and you can tell by all the cool city toddlers eating sushi last Saturday night. Every table in the place had a young child but it wasn't annoying at all. SF kids rock. They can hang with the older coolios noshing sushi on a Saturday night.
Moki's plays great music too. Great if you're between the ages of 30-45 because it was cool retro night. Thompson Twins, Clash, Kate Bush, etc. Good stuff.
On to the food. . .
Edamame was super fresh served warm with rock salt. Hamachi nigiri was fab as was the Tobiko Nigiri, Maguro Sashimi, and my oh my the Ecstasy roll! Yummy yummy in my tummy.
I love Moki's so much I'm moving to Bernal Hill just so I can call it my neighborhood sushi place. -
Review from carol y.
i am a really BIG fan of sushi. its one those things you wouldn't mind eating everyday. Also, i love trying to new restaurants thanks to all the great yelpers out there! :) YOU ROCK!
Yesterday was my first time here and I thought Moki's has fairly inexpensive sushi compared to most of the other sushi places in San Francisco, especially for the quality you get. They have a lot of unusual rolls, and it doesn't bother me that they aren't "traditional." My suggestion is to order their specialty maki rolls. I really enjoyed their spicy tuna roll & volcano roll, they were pretty tasty and had a nice spice to it.
In addition to sushi on the menu, Moki's also have grill selections like baby back ribs with wasabi mashed potatoes, calamari (GOOD STUFF!), curry chicken & etc. You may wonder why a sushi place would offer ribs but i assume they want to make their restaurant different than other sushi places out there which comes with their name "PACIFIC GRILL."
Moki's is somewhat small but its roomy, quiet and warm, but can be a little dark. The staff is friendly and efficient.
Recommendations:
-- Volcano Roll
-- Spicy Tuna Roll
-- Pacific Sea Salad (YUM!!!) -

Great sushi and great atmosphere! The place was a little hot but that only was because there were so many people there which is always a good sign. I don't know too much about sushi so it was hard to tell what I would like just by looking at the menu. But I still ended up liking what we ordered. I can't wait to go back and try more rolls.

**Update** I don't believe they serve brunch anymore (that is what my original review was about). I gave them 3 stars for that.
But I like their sushi and I'm updating my review and giving 4 stars for that! They've got a great, creative veggie selection. I think that their rice has improved. I like their appetizers, their corn fritters, vegan spring rolls, and their mochi ice cream desserts are so yummy!
This is our go to sushi place. Can get crowded. But, when I've got a sushi craving, this is where we go. -

If you love all things sushi and are into unique flavor combinations this is the place for you! The sushi definetly strays from traditinal rolls, but what they have instead, is best described as "craveable"! I.e. coconut and macademia in a roll??? Sounds propostorous? Try delicious!
They've got a selection of steaks, chickens, etc. for those who are sushi shy (though I've never tried them), and also have tons of options for vegetarians. However, don't come here expecting half priced sushi, its a bit pricey but worth every penny. -

I've been to a lot of sushi places and this place has the best sushi around! The service can be a little unpredictable but it has gotten so much better over the years (we've been going there since they opened). The rolls are unique and tasty. Try the Ecstasy, Riptide and Rock 'n Rolls. Their desserts are good too. We love the different Mochi they offer, the Banana Lumpia and the Chocolate Ecstasy.
The clientele has changed a lot with the neighborhood. Usually there are young families coming in right when they open. So if you're a twenty-something hipster or just a barren old grouch that can't stand kids, wait until after 7:30 pm to stop in. -
Review from Bingying L.
San Francisco, CA
Came here in a party of 8 and shared a bunch of appetizers, rolls and main dishes. I enjoyed the appetizers (although the calamari was seriously mediocre for a restaurant of this standard) and the main dishes were really good, but the rolls were totally unimpressive. I mean, a roll is a roll is a roll. You can't really get it that wrong. But if you're going to pretend that these are extra special rolls I expect something at least slightly above average.
Would have given this place 3.5 stars, but I'm taking half a star away for the bewildering service. The servers were friendly enough I guess. Unfortunately, they ruined our birthday surprise by coming out with the cake before dinner started and telling us there was a cutting fee right in front of the birthday girl. Good job dude. Way to be subtle. At some point they brought out 7 plates and 5 forks for our party of 8. ??? How do you even do that? If you're going to be wrong at least be consistent about it.
