Snooty slow service with mediocre food - at best.

Too bad, cause I love the location.

Did I say, mediocre, at best?

I've been twice for dinner and once for brunch and have never been disappointed in the food. The decor is cute and modern (hence the name?) Sometimes the wait is long but the food is down home and downright scrumptious. The meatloaf is my favorite!!

Lovely teas, wonderful relaxed and friendly service, satisfying comfort food from sustainable sources. My personal favorites are the Civil War waffles made on an authentic Civil War Waffle Iron. YUM. The chicken dinner is nuts. The chicken/spinach/avocado/potato scramble is satisfying, and then there is the pot de creme. Oh my. The teas are all wonderful and complement the food well, We've had to wait a bit, but not as long as other popular places. Also, Modern Tea contributes to the community in a meaningful way, check out their website. It's inspiring.

The food was quite yummy, but holy slow service!!!

We arrived for Sunday brunch, and waited for over 10 minutes before the hostess finally greeted us.  Most of the tables were full, and everyone looked REALLY busy-- everyone was running around-- the chefs in the back were clearly hustling, and the servers moved quickly around the tables.  Except for this one really stern looking woman who we presumed was the manager-- she just stood there and looked out at the restaurant, moving from the back to the front.  I don't know about you, but if my staff is that busy, I roll up my sleeves and get things moving.  Her presence mystified and annoyed me.

When we finally were seated, it took another 10 minutes for the server to take our order.  Our juice came out 15 minutes later, tea ten minutes after, and food 10 minutes after that.

I felt like we did a whole lot of waiting.  There were other tables that were seated before we even got there, and by the time we saw them get their food, we had been in the restaurant for at least 40 minutes.

That said, the cornmeal waffles were delicious, and my boyfriend got a scramble of some sort that he considered quite satisfying.  And, the tea was a nice change from our regular coffee-- still, we needed to make a pit stop after for our daily espresso beverages.

We love this place. The nibble plate is to die for. I crave the chicken and green salad regularly. You can also get tea to go in a little glass jar...adorable. A bit pricey, but we are willing to pay for such quality food. Service can be slow, but since it's a tea shop, slowing down is all part of the vibe.

I was extremely impressed with this place. We came here for a friend's birthday dinner, and to be honest, I wasn't expecting much. You'd think that a place featuring "Tea" so prominently in their name would suck for real food, right?

Nope, not Modern Tea.

I ordered the cast-iron pan-seared halibut served over bok choy and carrots. The halibut was cooked to perfection. Absolute perfection. Lesser restaurants often overcook the hell out of fish, leaving nothing but a dry, flaky mess for patrons to eat. The halibut here was seared perfectly with a gorgeous thin crust on the surface, leaving the inside of the meat cool and silky. It was heavenly. The accompanying vegetables were also great, though I thought the bok choy was a tad mushy.

I also sampled a bit of my friends' dishes. The meat loaf was pretty good, but the layered potato... "cake" (for lack of a better word) that it was paired with was incredible. They should really let you order that by itself! I also had a chance to try the salmon; again, very well cooked, with a perfect crust. I'm not a big salmon fan though.

We finished off with a persimmon tea, which went down like any other tea but really surprised me with its sweet finish.

I only wish the appetizers matched the quality of the entrees. I thought they tended to be a little too simple and uninspired; nothing really jumped out at me from the menu.

That said though, it's still a must-visit restaurant in the city. I can't wait to come again to try the other dishes.

My sister, stepsister and I took my Mom here the Saturday before Mother's Day, and it was awesome!

I had poached eggs, which I'm obsessed with, toast and potatoes, and a side of yogurt. The dried fruit compote it came with... oh my god, so good. I don't know if they make their own yogurt, but I love it... and especially love the little glass pot it comes in.

My mom had some amazing biscuits, and said the chicken sausage was the best she'd ever had. She's dying for the recipe. My sister loved her chicken sausage scramble, hold the chicken sausage (she's a sustainable-pescatarian). My stepsister's sesame granola was delicious - we all loved it.

I'm very curious about the tilapia "bacon," but totally afraid to order it.

Fun tea menu, which reads like a wine list. Our waitress was super sweet and knowledgeable about the teas, and we all liked what we got! My mom had the elderflower, I had something barley-related.

I haven't been here for dinner yet, but I am really looking forward to doing so. Super close to my house, great, interesting, fresh food.

So comfortable! So reasonably priced! So home-cooking, simple and filling!

And even better - they were half-empty on a Saturday night. Better for me, that is, I hate crowds. Their dinner menu is really simple - home-cooked-style meals such as dark meat chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy. Luckily, I prefer this kind of simple fare, and the prices were really reasonable.

Of course it's also a tea bar, hence the name. I just ordered a simple genmaicha tea after dinner, but I also had a really yummy iced Moroccan mint tea with dinner.

We had an amazing dessert as well, some kind of pudding cake in a jar, but at that point I was so stuffed I could only eat about half. $75 for three people, no wine (but lots of tea). I'll definitely be back - I think it would also be great for large groups because they have a couple of larger tables that normally serve as communal tables. Very friendly service as well.

Because I don't want to see them fail, I strongly recommend that you go there. Apparently they have brunch as well - that's next on my list.

A friend and I have been meaning for months to check this place out, since we're both fans of high-end tea. Ironically, we'd both over-caffeinated yesterday, but the tea menu is organized by caffeination level, which was our first sign that we were in the right place.

We showed up at 5 to beat the theater crowd, not realizing the dinner service doesn't start until 5:30 (and I wanted to skip the afternoon service, since I am allergic to gluten and the menu's 90% pastries and sandwiches). But they were happy to serve us tea -- elderflower in my case, persimmon in my friend's -- and let us chat until dinner started.

The teas were wonderful, exotic and warming. We ordered a nibbles plate that came with walnuts, radishes with salt and butter, a small arugula salad, crostini and a pot of goat cheese topped with a thin layer of honey. Since I couldn't have the crostini, I just had bites of cheese/honey on a spoon, each with a walnut half -- heaven.

For the main course, she had the chicken-quinoa soup which she enjoyed but wasn't overly enthusiastic about. I had the polenta and salad with a side of chicken. Everything was tasty and simple -- especially the flavors of the polenta, jack cheese and tomato sauce combined with mushrooms and other veggies in the polenta bowl.

Modern Tea's food is simple and tasty, and not so fancy that it overshadows their centerpiece: the tea.

I have had brunch twice at Modern Tea.  The first experience was great.  I was seated quickly, the service was prompt and very attentive and the food lived up to my yelped-expectations.  I had a savory egg/bread dish, for which I cannot recall the name.  The boy had the civil war waffles.  Both plates were the appropriate size, and not a whopping dinner-sized breakfast.  I was very appreciative to have finished my plate, feel satisfied and have little or no wasted food.  Well priced for a nice morning brunch with my lad.

The second experience was poor, poor, poor... we were seated outside and forgotten about for at least 20 minutes. When our server finally arrived to take the order, it was evident from his voice and body language that he was irritated and not happy to be at work.  I ordered the veggie-version of chicken sausage scramble and my boy had the layered potatoes.  The scramble was overwhelmed with fennel, and I resent that Modern Tea could not have substituted extra alternative veggies or tofu in place of the sausage.  The layered potatoes were nothing more than a box of glorified Betty Crocked Scalloped Potatoes.  Sadly, we left disappointed, only to drown ourselves in leftover rum cake later that morning. Amen.

The food was decent, but nothing spectacular. I mean, its kinda hard to screw up country potatoes and plain poached eggs on toast, right?  That being said the service was painfully slow. That's ok if you aren't on a schedule or really don't care about waiting fifteen minutes before they take your order.  But when you only offer like five things and they probably only take five minutes to create, it shouldn't take that long, with so few dinners patronizing.
I was really disappointed about the limited menu selections. I hope this is due to their painfully small kitchen.
The egg and chicken sausage scramble was pleasing, and the leftovers provided me with breakfast on Sunday, but thank goodness they had that because nothing really popped out otherwise.
I'm not thrilled and not inclined to come back for another meal.
Cute place. Very European in feel. Polite wait staff, but while I was sitting there I was thinking about how I could have seriously trumped their dishes at home, and that I should have just saved the money. Ug. Oh well.

This place quite simply has all the elements of a favorite neighborhood restaurant -- convivial owners, delicious food, well curated tea selection and great overall theme. I only wish they were open later for dinner, but that might run the friendly owners into the ground. The menu includes highly original interpretations of many American standards and they are all excellently executed. The egg / chicken scramble is divine. I have never had anything here that wasn't uniquely tasty, and I am hoping they eventually do a cookbook. This has replaced the now defunct but much missed Miss Millie's as my favorite brunch spot.

This is my favorite spot in Hayes Valley for a casual meal.

I have no idea what to order when it comes to their expansive tea list, but it's fun to pretend I know what I'm doing - not unlike wine.

MT also cooks with neighborhood youth!  Kudos for the positive social impact.

One more place to add to my Unpretentious Hayes Valley Venues list!  (Hmm, maybe I should make one of those.)  They have a delicious vegetarian dish with farro in it -- farro!  I *heart* farro! -- that they'll happily take all the cheese out of; it's so so yummy.

They also give you one of the desserts -- a flan, perhaps? I forget -- in a jar.  A cute little jar!

There isn't a preponderance of vegan items on the menu (I think the polenta was the only other one listed), but because they're so flexible, I'll be back.  Nice dcor; warm; friendly; yummy.

Walked there for lunch on a nice sunny day - since they have outdoor seating. Ordered a chicken meatloaf sandwich.
The meatloaf was cold (I was expecting hot/warm), and the only thing tasty about it was the ketchup on top (sad! specially for a 10+$ sandwich!). The bread was good sourdough, but the edge was almost black instead of brown, and it was hard, really hard to bite/chew, and hurt my upper palate.
It did come with a salad which was quite good - it had some orange zest that gave it a fresh, citrusy, summery flavor, and it had orange beets that were very good.

Wouldnt go there again.

Great spot if you're looking for a lighter fare. Wide range of teas from normal to funky. Pastries and breads are always delish. Dinner menu is somewhat limited but everything I've had was solid. I like how they always give you a small green salad. Good looking out! I'm usually able to get a table pretty quickly but if you have to wait, there's not much room to stand and you are deathly afraid of knocking over teapots.

Wandered by and decided to plop down at the tea bar since we really had nothing better to do this amazingly warm weekend!  Turned out to be a good decision as the tea (had the Tokujo Karigane) and cake were excellent!  I was even given an extra carafe of hot water that supplied me with about 5 more steepings!

Sitting at the tea bar, I got to see first hand how much modern tea cares about tea.  They pre-heat the teapot and cup before steeping!  Their greens were at 175 (except for my Karigane which was 155 degrees).

The staff (owners?) behind the tea bar were very knowledgeable and answered just about every question I had!  While sitting there, we also managed to have a great conversation with the tea brewers . . . felt like we were just hanging out with old friends really.

ALSO, I can undoubtedly say I had the best hot chocolate I've ever had.  . . . and it was hot out, so I wasn't influenced by any sort of frigid temps.  It was almost like drinking a chocolate bar, very rich, smooth and flavorful!

Yum.  The food and tea were delicious.  I got the vegetarian sandwich (I'm not a vegetarian, it just sounded really good) and it came with a fantastic apple/walnut/dried cherry salad that I can't stop thinking about 2 days later.  It was the perfect combination of savory and sweet because they put a little bit of fresh chopped thyme in it.  My friend got the cherry muffins, which were served warm with a few slices of cheese - a great touch.

The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because I have a hard time paying $6 for a little cup of tea.  I drink about 50 ounces of tea a day, so that little baby cup was not cutting it for me (as cute as it was...).  Otherwise, I can't wait to come back!  I'll order the warmed jade, I think, because that looked amazing and is more up my alley from a volume perspective.

Forgetting how cold a sunny SF day can be, I was happy a friend suggested lunching at Modern Tea. We immediately ordered tea (after browsing their many selections from oolong to white), which came with specific steeping instructions for each (mine 1 min, hers 30 sec), and I was warm instantly.  The food was yummy comfort food - I had a delicious savory bread pudding and simple salad, with one square inch of unleavened chocolate cake ($1) for that little something sweet I need at the end of a meal. I can't wait to bring my tea-obsessed sister!

You know, I'm not sure i'd get out of bed at all on weekends if it weren't for the salmon hash breakfast at Modern Tea. Alice, Greg, Mary, and the rest of the staff are sweet and know their tea, and the food is delicious.

It's a pretty green/locavorish place, too: I frequently see the owners unloading produce from the farmer's market from the back of a City CarShare car parked outside.

In an effort to find a cheaper tea place in place of Samovar, Mel (you know, my roommate because I never hang out with anyone else) and I came here to have tea.  At first glance, Modern Tea looks like a good mix between modern and country home style.  Which I find adorable.  Unfortunately, the acoustics suck.  It was crazy loud and therefore is not relaxing.  Honestly if I just wanted tea and a chat with my roommate, I'd bust out the big mugs, put the kettle on and just go and sit on the couch under the big blanket.  I don't need to spend $20 to do that.

I ordered this twice baked bread thing with all sorts of veggie and cheesy goodness.  THAT was bomb diggity.  The side salad had a nice dressing as well.  But unfortunately the service was not what I hoped it would be.  Namely it seems to take forever to get seated and water was only refilled when asked.  Maybe I have a thing about this or I am being picky but it seems to me making sure there is plenty of water for the diners is the easiest thing you can do to make sure someone is getting good service.   It costs nothing but your attention.

In the end the place is nice, cute and quaint and has a good handle on their food.  And I would come back just for that bread thingy but in the end there have to be other options open for us tea girls.

So last Sunday, after reading many a positive Yelp review and passing by a million times on the 21, I finally made it out to Modern Tea with a few of my friends. For the first time in what seemed like a loooonggg cold winter season in the city, that morning the sun was shining beautifully and it was amazingly warm... perfect brunch weather!

The sunny mood outside matched Modern Tea's glowing mood inside, where we were seated immediately at just past noon, despite the fact that we thought there'd be a long line on a weekend.

I think what I loved most about this place is that being there just made me FEEL so happy! Inside it's spacious and airy, the walls are painted a bright yellow, tiny fresh flowers greet you on the table, water is constantly replenished from pretty clear pitchers, and the funky blue and green glass wall hangings add a bit of that "modern" touch.

Normally brunch is meant to cure a hangover, but this place CALLED for mid-day mimosas.... another happy yellow addition to the experience :).

The brunch menu isn't grandiose, and neither are the portions, but then again this really isn't your divey grease spoon of a place. I went for something different and ordered the salmon hash, which turned out to be delicious, especially paired with the contrasting sweet fruit compote. My "sheared" egg (crunchy on the outside, runny on the inside) was also something new... that and the "yogHurt" got us thinking that throwing in some extra h's on the menu probably also tacks on an extra dollar to the item. But still good!

We ended with the buttermilk pudding cake that I had read raves about, and sure enough, mmmmmmmm! Our friendly and helpful waiter also assisted me in picking out a tea to take home, and gave me some very specific instructions on how my choice (the Ti Kuan Yin Mao Cha, an oolong tea) should be prepared and served. Since one of my goals in life is to become a tea connoisseur, his shared knowledge, whether contrived or not, was much appreciated :).

I left feeling great, and as a result I think it made the rest of my day great too. Thanks to you, Modern Tea... my new favorite brunch spot!

I'm not a picky eater but my stomache is so it's rare that I can find food that satisfies. Modern Tea managed to do just that. The vegan celerac soup was to die for, and it went espeacially well with the amazing chewy wheat bread they bring to your table. As an entree I had the chicken meatloaf sandwich. It was unexpectedly cold but hit the spot.

Just had a company event at Modern Tea and we bought out the place for  a couple hours on a Sunday. The staff was fantastic, knowledgeable and we all took back some good information and suggestions for brewing tea and the benefits of certain blends. Organic, sustainable produce really is a great touch and the prices are fair for a neighborhood spot in the Hayes Valley area. Definitely save some room and get their chocolate pot de creme-like dessert...it's too amazing for words.

This is a cool place to enjoy a brunch outside on Laguna.  The hostess was super nice, the service was good, although it took a while to get the food out even though it didn't seem slammin' busy.
The strawberry muffins were tasty morsels to whet out appetite.
I had the salmon hash with a "sheared" egg.  This was a really fried egg, which I don't normally like, but it was pretty damn good actually.  The hash was nice as well.
The dried fruit compote on the side was great and the levain toast was delish, although a bit too toasty for my liking.  Got some house made strawberry jam to slather on that bitch, and I was good to go.
My friend got the granola and a HUGE jar of tasty full-fat (or at least it tasted like it) yogurt on the side.
Oh, by the way...the tea was brewed to perfection, seriously.  It was so nice to have it brewed AND THEN poured into the pot, so it didn't continue to brew and get bitter.  Definitely GREAT tea. Only thing that would be an awesome little touch would be to have a tea cozy wrapped around it to keep the pot warm, especially on the cold-ish day that we were there. I will for sure be going there again.  Cute place, nice people, and good food.

After driving around and around, we FINALLY found a parking space in this part of town. We happened to park half a block away from Modern Tea and decided to drop by for a bite to eat.
Our server was friendly from the very beginning. When she saw us approaching a table outside, she immediately invited us to sit down and the menus arrived shortly. She was great throughout the meal, making sure we were well taken care of without being intrusive.
For food, we shared the strawberry oatmeal muffins and citrus cake with berries and cream. For tea, I had Moroccan mint and hubby had Assam Breakfast. The teas were alright, but the food was excellent! The strawberry muffin was moist and yummy, with a sweet crackling coating on top. The citrus cake, OMG, was soooooo good. It had the most incredible fresh lemony flavor. It was heaven with the slightly sweet cream and fresh strawberries.
Enjoying delicious food while soaking up the sun with hubby and the pups. Life doesn't get much better than this.

This restaurant was such a pleasant surprise!  A few friends and I were wandering around Hayes Valley looking for three things:  outdoor seating, booze, and reasonably priced lunch.  We were celebrating, so we had some champagne (yum!).  I had an absolutely delicious mushroom sandwich that came with salad, and then we split two desserts - chocolate pots de creme and apple crisp.  It was all very reasonably priced, the staff was very friendly, and both the indoor and outdoor seating was nice.

Also, they had an amazingly thorough tea list - it ain't named "Modern Tea" for nothin.  Tasty.  I'm looking forward to trying it out for breakfast.  Now I just need to make some friends who live in Hayes Valley so I can visit them on Sunday morning!

Rustic vibe. It had a sort of summer camp feel to it, with its wooden floors and stained glass artwork hanging from the rafters.

Went here for brunch on a sunny Sunday and ordered me a Mimosa. I like to down my drink before I get my food, on an empty stomach, so that I get a bit of a buzz goin' (sure sign of an alcoholic, wanting to get tipsy at noon, but hey).

I had the creamy layered potatoes, which tasted like those powdery Hungry Jack packaged Au Gratin potatoes, so not so great. My friend had the Salmon Hash, which I'll vouch for, though.

The place has an appreciable hipster vibe, but their food definitely backs it up.  My friend and I went for brunch this afternoon wearing our running scrubs.  Our waiter was incredibly attentive and helpful.  My chicken sausage scramble was stunning; I could barely even believe I was eating eggs.

My friend, however, found the real shining star dish of the morning.  She wanted the vegetable sandwich, but after some consultation with our protein-crazed waiter, asked for it with chicken on top.  This was apparently an unprecedented suggestion, but, after tasting it, I wouldn't be surprised if it shows up on the menu by the end of the week.

For dessert, we tried the citrus buttermilk pudding cake.  There are really no words, beyond the four in its name, that can effectively describe it.  This is one of the few times in history that my very athletic friend offered to split a dessert with me and then ate more than half of it.  It was that good.

The pudding cake was so delicious, I won't even dock Modern Tea a point for its unimpressive teas.  I'm definitely not a connoisseur or anything, but my $5 pot of herbal tea wasn't much tastier than the teabags I can get at Trader Joe's.  I've had some life-changing tea experiences, and this wasn't one.  Still, the food was mind-blowing.

My new favorite brunch spot. Good tea, tasty food. And only 3 blocks away from the Blue Bottle Kiosk. :)

The corn waffles are a bit out there for me, but you should definitly try it once. Make sure to put the fruit compot and yogurt on there, as all the tastes come together nicely. I guess I'm just more into eggs and salads for brunch stuff these days.

Oh, and the pastries are quite tasty. Watch out for the lines though (I mean wait lines, not crack lines, sicko!)

Great place to chill and enjoy brunch or afternoon tea (without all the hype and reservations required at Lovejoy's or the posh places downtown).

I've been here twice so far.  Once for brunch: civil war waffles are outstanding!  And just today for tea:  all the pastries are really good: especially the Texas Cake and Strawberry Tea Cake.

They have lots of teas from all over the world and friendly service.  And after you're done, you can go shopping on Hayes Street...

I love this place! I've been there four times and the service has always been excellent. One night it was a little slow, but that's okay because there dishes are all so fresh and seasonal. The citrus sugar bundt cake is a must. The salmon with farro risotto is also one of the best things on the menu. A very friendly owner too, what could be better?

A group of 9 of us dropped in for tea and dessert after having dinner nearby. We were seated right away at nice large table. The staff were friendly and helpful. The owner stopped by to chat.

They have a decent selection of tea. I had a Pu erh that came in a nice little pot and was very tasty. I also had the carrot cake that tasted homemade. It was topped with a very fresh whipped cream.

The decor was bright and cheery and was accented with hand made stained glass. The place looks like someones large modern kitchen.

Our group enjoyed the place.

On a Sunday afternoon they were serving a brunch menu.

We were told that the wait would be a half hour, but because they seated us at a common table, a space opened up in about ten minutes.  I ordered salmon hash, which turned out to be more like pan-fried mashed potatoes than a hash, but which tasted very good.  My Lady ordered a chicken scramble, which had something like mild Italian sausage in it.

Now, for the tea.  We ordered the Honey Dan Chong, which the waiter approved as "very sophisticated."  Oh, really?  The man in the beret -- is he an owner? -- taught us how to steep the tea in small batches, as the teapot held about 3 ounces.  He was right, every batch was different, and we did taste the honey-like flavors on the third and subsequent batches.

We wrapped up the meal with a cookie plate, which gave us the real "afternoon tea" feeling, and stimulated a conversation about what it is exactly that attracts women, and some men, to tea ceremonies.  That, and the oldest Japanese geisha, and how the geisha club has changed over the last century.  Yeah, I know.  Women, and some men, like to talk.

An afternoon of culinary entertainment for $23.50 + tip.

This is a weekly spot for the bf and I. its the perfect place to get a nice brunch with amazing food and awesome teas.  one of the best things about this place is the fruit compote and yogurt.  they're sides, but they're amazing! The chicken sausage scramble is really good and recently we tried the strata and it was really good too, but my favorite is the waffles and i hate waffles.  the pudding cake is totally out of this world good and the perfect end to any meal at modern tea.

Nice ambiance for a saturday afternoon tea and chat with a friend.

Best deal on the menu is the Simple Tea and Cake for less than $7!  The homemade jam on soft cake/bread pieces is to die for!

Try the longevity tea with white peony or something like that from Yunan Province, it's a light flavor tea with a sweet soft aftertaste... good combo with the cake.
