ALFREDO IS A INK SLINGIN GENIOUS!!!

Alfredo put my tattoo on like a pro! It looks as if though i was born with it on my skin, set to the physical tone of my upper arm matching the shape and contours of my arm! I aint never seen anything so friggen aaawesome! The last time I felt this way was when I had my first child! I highly reccomend ALFREDO. I 'm gonna have alot pride on what i pride in my first tattoo and what i call my "an alfredo piece" so get the man to hook you up before he becomes famous......

I have been wanting to get re-pierced for sometime, and just wanted to find the right place... I went to Modern Body and met a tatoo artist recently to discuss and idea I had for a larger piece, and noticed they also have piercing...

About one week after that, a friend and Iwere discussing my desire to get re-pierced, and she suggested that I head over to MB.... That;s all the recommendation I needed... They were hella cool about my tattoo ideas, and have great recommendations- this is yet another GLOWING review for them...

Melissa and I chatted a bot about the possibilities with re-piercing, jewelry and the different options... She made sure I was cool with the process, was very VERY professional throughout the process, letting me know what she was going to do, and telling my why.

The piercing didn't hurt one bit, and it barley even bled. SHe gave me detailed instructions about after-care, a copied sheet of things to think about and longer term aftercare and sent me on my way with a cheerful and very friendly bye!

I couldn't be happier, will reccomend her to everyone and will see her again for some other things I have planned!!

Whoot Whoot for Melissa and MB!!

I wanted to have a custom tattoo done so I headed to Modern Body.  I met with Alfredo and talked about what sort of design I would like.  He quickly sketched up something that I liked so I made an appointment for a week later.  When I went back the drawing was amazing and the tattoo came out beyond my expectations.  You can not beat the experience of having a custom piece done and Alfredo was fantatic.  You can see pictures of my tattoo on my blog:

I went here Friday night with a friend of mine to get *cough* something pierced.  I was really really nervous because I am a baby and afraid of pain.  I didn't have an appointment, but I was still seen pretty quickly.  The guy who was my piercer, Russ,  was super nice.  He is very professional, even when he was asking to feel my friends cheeks to see if he had jewelry long enough.  With me, he was very calming and relaxing.  He told me when to breath for the pain!  It was super clean too.  I think Russ changed his gloves like five times through the event.  And the instructions for after care are great.  They made me feel like they didn't want to just get my money and boot me out the door.  So, if you want something pierced, go to Russ at Modern Body for a really clean, relaxing, and overall wonderful experience.

Update 5/7 I had to go back to check on my stuff and it turned out I needed bigger jewelery.  They once again took great care of me.

I've currently still got a work in progress with the wonderful Alycia.  As someone else mentioned on here, this is not the place for quick flash work.  Each piece is as unique as the person getting it (and the person dishin it out).

The waiting list for Alycia is immensly loooooong.  Which, is fine by me.  She has the skill and clientel to keep herself busy.

If you are looking to get tattooed, my advise is to call in and schedule a consultation (there will be a small fee that goes towards your first session).  Tell the tattoist your idea and let them go to town with designing one for you.  You'll be able to set up your first appointment then, also.  Guaranteed you won't be dissappointed.

Really cool place and friendly folks working there.  I expected to be treated with a bit of disdain being a newbie to the tattoo world and admittedly looking like a bit of a square to boot.  To the contrary the artists and the owners were extremely cool and helped create the exact image that I wanted.  The tattoo came out even better than I imagined and when I'm ready for the next one I will be going back to Modern Body.

EDITED 4/1/08 to add: Regarding Brittany G's remark about MB being not being for "something generic the size of a silver dollar"--this is exactly the craptastic attitude I despise in some tattooistes and hated about my MB experience.

Despite this Yelper's assumption (and you know what they say about assumptions, kids!), my negative MB consult was about a custom piece I hoped to have the artist design based on my rough ideas, not something generic or prefab.

Yeah, I wanted something small, and something that wasn't photorealistic. SFW. I didn't get consulted with so much as looked down on. And that sucks.

/EDIT

Disclaimer: I did not actually get a tattoo at Modern Body.

I wanted to. The portfolios I viewed online were beautiful, particularly Alycia's (hence the stars). But the wait was long for those artists--so long that they weren't even taking appointments for some of them.

But, they said, they had a new artist who was available. However, after much discussion of designs, he and I decided we simply could not see eye to eye (I apparently failed his Hipster Test and he practically broke my Pretentious Meter).

I do believe that a tattoo is a collaborative work between an artist and the client. And I fully appreciate hearing from artists if my design idea has flaws, such as too much detail that will lose definition over time.

But if I say I want an abstract or primitive looking design, I really don't want an artist to steer me towards something photorealistic because that's what he says he most enjoys doing. And if I want a tattoo the size of a silver dollar, I don't want an artist to grumble and mumble about how he really gets bored doing that type of tattoo and why don't I want something bigger?

And, wacky though it may sound, I believe that a tattoo that gets inked on my skin is, ultimately, more a reflection of my style than the artist's (it is, of course, a reflection of the artist's skill).

I don't know if this particular artist's attitude is reflective of the attitude of Modern Body as a whole. If so, then, I guess my experience is just an example of a mismatch between client and store. If not, though, MB management might want to have a discussion with their artists about how they interact with potential clients.

I'll end this review with some of this MB artist's own words, as they appeared in the Sac Bee in a recent article on tattoos. The subject was how people sometimes get tattoos removed, for varied reasons. The artist in question stated, "A tattoo is a commitment you make. Removing it is demeaning to the artist."

If you agree with this sentiment, then perhaps MB is the right place for you to get inked. If not, then you might want to find another place--or at least artist--with a less grandiose viewpoint.

i've been getting tattooed at Modern Body for a good few years now. i've got a half sleeve from dave, as well as half of my chest. i've got another full sleeve from alycia that is currently in progress.

i've also been working in tattoo/piercing shops for quite some time, so i'm not new to "tattoo attitudes". Modern Body has none of that. more than likely, if you go into this shop with a good idea of what you want, some patience because they are severely booked up, and a willingness to work with the artist, you're going to come out with a great piece of art and not just some silly trinket tattoo that you'll want covered in a year or two.

"Full Custom Shop" means pretty much one thing, CUSTOM tattoos. don't go looking for flash of a butterfly sitting on a peace sign or taz smoking a joint. you're not going to find it there, as you shouldn't.  i believe there are pleanty of flash driven shops in sacto, and we don't need another one. this shop is filled with ARTISTS, not just people who like to draw from time to time. not only this, but you'll probably meet a new friend there as everyone that works there are really down to earth and friendly (just because they wear black doesn't mean they want to eat your face).

i only wish that i had more skin for them to cover.

Several months ago I had to admit that as a grown ass woman I couldn't refuse a job just because they told me I had to take out my nose ring.  So, out it went for three long months.

During that time I came to realize the hypocrisy of forcing me to take out my nose ring when it was perfectly fine to have large holes (including plugs) in ones ears.  I don't have holes in my ears.  Never have.

So, after being offered a new job I resolved to get my nose repierced first thing.  My friend knew of someone being pierced at Modern Body so off we went.

The man working the front counter greeted us and set up helping me pick out my new hoop.  I wanted my hole in the same spot as my old one, which originally raised concern for the piercer because my hole is high up (necessitating a larger hoop).  It took some back and forth to convince the guy that I actually like larger jewelry.

The piercing process was done in the back room.  Everything looked extremely clean and the piercer cracked jokes to ease any tension.  I wasn't nervous, but my body tends to have funny reactions to needles being jabbed in it so he gave me time to get settled after the poking (which didn't hurt at all).

Total cost, $30 including the hoop.
