This is a fairly unique dessert location.  There are only a few places like this in Orange County and this is easily the best of the bunch.  After all, you can only go to Yogurtland so many times.  It's a little bit on the pricey side for one or two people, but if you have a group of 3 or more, it's a very good deal.  If your party consists of two couples, it is an excellent deal.
I like the big comfortable tables and benches.  Seating can be at a premium at prime times (7 - 8 on Fri / Sat).  But like all things in Irvine, if you get there at 8:30 or 9, the place is pretty open.
The mochi is REALLY good and gelato is solid, but not the very best that I've had.  The Italian-style served with fruit is truly an outstanding treat to end an evening.  In addition, they have good coffee, which so many dessert places seem to have as an afterthought.

This place hasn't changed much since it first opened...except that they offer a lot more food.

They offer many different flavors of Mochi & Ice Cream, Gelato, as well as shaved ice, ramen, and other dishes.

If you want a table to sit at, send someone ahead to save it cuz the tables go fast.

I dropped by last nite for dessert.  The place was packed so I thought maybe this place improved but it's gotten worst.  Everything is overrated and pricy.  Their mochi aren't any better than the ones you get from the freezer section at the market.  Gelato are good but expensive, $4 for a tiny little scoop.  Macarons are $1.75 and they are not good at all.
I tried their waffle dessert $8, it's absolutely terrible!  I got the one with strawberry and banana topping.  The waffle is really hard and chewy like rubber.  I was absolutely disappointed!
This place is terrible, expensive and over rated.  I don't mind paying for good desserts, but this place is definitely not it!

I was in the Irvine area this weekend to attend a business holiday party (don't ask me why it's held in January, instead of December).  I checked Yelp for a dessert place and found this shop with a check-in offer of buy one mochilato, get one free.  Perfect!  I wanted to see how their mochilato stacked up against the ones from famous Mikawaya.  What's mochilato?  It's a mochi filled with gelato.

Turns out, there's no need to compare because they serve Mikiwaya's mochilato and they have a lot more flavors than the Mikiwaya shop in Little Tokyo.  They had flavors I've never seen before like plum, tiramisu, and choco peanut.  Well, they certainly didn't make it easy for me to walk out of the shop with only two mochilatos.

I ended up with six (coconut, creme brulee, mango, red bean, green tea, and plum).  Coconut had the best flavor though I might be a bit biased.  Plum was unique in a good way.  Mango tasted artificial.  Green tea had a lot of matcha flavor so it was not too sweet.  Red bean was smooth.  Creme brulee was bland.  I was disappointed they didn't have peach which is my favorite because it tastes like a peach Calpico.

If mochilato is not your thing, they also serve Asian shaved ice, Beard Papa cream puffs, XT Patisserie macarons, taiyaki, mochi, gelato, hot/cold drinks, and even hot food.  I didn't notice boba drinks which is shocking.  If they served boba, it'd be over because there's no need to go anywhere else to satisfy all your Asian dessert cravings.

The shop was packed on a late Saturday night.  There were lots of Asian families with kids so the noise level was high.  They could probably use more help behind the counter during busy hours because the line moved slowly which is not bad for first timers so they could check out all the goodies but not so good if you just need to grab something and get out of there quickly.

Finally got to try this place tonight.  I was really tempted to try the Macarons, but in the end, I got distracted by the Mochilatos and got 2 of those instead: Pistachio and Guava. Also tried the Mochilato Way Shaved Ice.

Pistachio was a HOME-RUN for me. Guava -- maybe a 2nd-3rd base for me. Shaved ice got to 1st base, just because of the gelato and the fruits that came with it.  Next time I'm here, I'm just going to try a few more Mochilatos and be well on my way to look for better shaved ice!

Great little dessert place. The Mochi ice cream is good. There are a lot of different types: my favorites are cookies and cream and toasted almond. They are all very light and delicate flavors but very tasty. The Mochi is nice and chewy.

They also have a variety of regular mochi as well. There are also a lot of awesome looking treats: Belgium waffles with ice cream, Gelato, shaved ice with fruits, and also they now have Beard Papa and you can order freshly made cream puffs!

    Hey everyone,

I finally deciphered their Yelp deal.  It's based on your yelp check ins.  I believe you just have to check in at least once, possibly two times or more and you will see that you have accessed a coupon for "buy one mochilato receive one free".  At least, that's what I received.  Plus with their new addition of Beard Papa, I'm still a regular visitor.

Ventured here last night after actually leaving room for dessert. I got the red bean and coconut gelato mochis. The red bean was ok, I had a bite of a cookie dough which was good, but the real star for me was the coconut. It had little bits of shredded coconut in the gelato. We also got a waffle with nutella, bananas, and vanilla gelato. The waffles was super tastey, but I think you can put nutella on almost everything and it would make happy.

The whole dessert cafe idea is super great. They also have beard papa's and coffee drinks available. And there is a whole menu of shaved ice insanity. Overall would be a great place to take a few people who were wanting something sweet but didn't know what exactly they wanted. The menu has enough variety that you'll be able to find something you like.

The cafe part has a good amount of large table seating. The only slightly negative is all the teenagers that hang out in here. So it can get pretty loud. But more than likely you'll be so high on a sugar rush it won't really matter.

    Nothing spectacular about this place.

You pay less buying mochi from the boxes at Mitsuwa than here. Their shaved ice is Ok. I'd say "The Balcony" in the Jamboree plaza tastes better.

    Plain like white rice.

That doesn't even make sense. :/

Went here last night, and have been coming here for a while every now and then, but something's changed...

It's not the fact that they've added the Bearded Papa's cream puffs or that they now have macarons... it's something else.  I can't quite put finger on it, but I can tell you now, the happy feeling I used to have when thinking of mochilato is definitely gone, now I just think oh, mochilato.. THAT place.

Kind of like with relationships.  In the beginning, it's something exciting, something new, and you think, wow, this person's great- more amazing than any other person you've ever been with.  But then the relationship drags on, and you get used to the same old things.  You try to introduce a few new factors into the relationship to spice things up, to keep things going, but in turn, things only go for the worse.

And that's what mochilato is like now to me.  They've added a new franchise and threw in some macarons, but the macarons looked poorly displayed and unappealing, and the bearded papa's attracted more attention to mochilato, but from what I saw last night (Saturday night), the staff wasn't able to handle all the new attention, which ultimately lead to a long wait inside their stuffy, cramped up store.

While in line for 20 minutes last night, I also go to look at their menu, and really?  That's what they charge for only that much?  Maybe it's good... really good... to be that kind of price.  But no... it wasn't.  It was just, as my yelp rating says, "A-OK."

So now the question is, will I come back to Mochilato?  Yes, but only if my little sister wants any mochi ice cream that's a flavor different from the ones you can buy in stores.  (a flavor other than green tea, strawberry, mango, or chocoolate)

But I won't be coming back for any other reason.  I used to like Mochilato, but now it seems as if it's trying to take on too many new things at once, and it's overwhelming in more ways than one.  I saw weird things go on last night... one lady carrying a plate of hot korean food to her table, a long line that lasts at least 20 minutes, and only two people behind the counter trying to serve: macarons, shaved ice, bearded papa's, korean food, mochilato, gelato, and sorbets from one counter.

Don't worry Mochilato, when I look back at our good old times, I'll still try to think of you as the sweet dessert place you once were, when you only served japanese desserts, mochi, and mochilato.  I'll even try to forget that you served hot korean food, though you're a japanese dessert shop.

The mochilato is pretty good. I really like the red bean one. Shaved ice is nothing special... Never get the dessert waffles. I ordered the strawberry red bean waffles once and the waffle came out soggy in a pool of strawberry syrup... Not good. Won't ever be getting it again.

YUMMMMM!!! Their shaved ice is one of the best I have ever tried. I like their Japanese style and Italian styled ice. They differ in toppings and flavors but together they are absolutely amazing!! The Gelato is tip top and their mochi is good as well! Everything here hits my tastes buds just right. Bonus, the cashier who served us was quick, polite, and extremely cute!

Never been to a fresh Mochi place before and this place certainly gave me a good first impression!  Cute and nice decor inside with the heavy wooden table and benches.  The real/stale cream puffs they have everywhere as decoration was a bit off putting though.

Apparently they now sell: Beard Papas too as one of their options.

Was very tempted to try the yummy looking shaved ice but no room in tummy.  We shared 6 different flavors of mochi instead.  They have about 15 flavors to choose some and all the flavors we tried were pretty yummy.

Another store I really thing Norcal needs to have- fresh ice cream mochi and nice big portions of shaved ice!

Mochilato Style Shaved Ice is awesome.  The portion is a good size and rather than skimping on the goodies they give you a good ratio of ice to stuff.

Also the mochilato's (Mochi Covered Ice Cream) are pretty good.  The fruit related ones tend to have a greater pop when it comes to the flavor department, but the savory ones are good none the less.

The Macaroons are pretty well done, nice and chewy with good flavor, I had the Earl Grey one, but like all Macaroons the price is a bit steep for a single piece.

I checked in here since it was the closest to the CVS, and I noticed that they had a offer check in of a buy one get one free mochi! So of course, I went in, and surprisingly, it was busier than I remembered.

They had quite the selection of mochis, from the typical ones you see at the stores in the beige boxes, to tiramisu, cookies and cream, and chocolate mint. I'm pretty simple, and I had to leave in a hurry, so I ordered the green tea kind. Their gelato selection looked appetizing, but not a lot of people opt'd for it. The green tea mochi, in my opinion, isn't as sweet as the ones they sell at the asian markets, or Trader Joes. It has more of the tea essence, so I guess it depends on how strong you like your tea. I however, still like the boxed kind, so I guess its by preference.

They also sell papa beard's, but just the regulars: chocolate and vanilla.

It's $1.25 per mochi, and I'm not sure about the cream puff., but its roughly around $1.50 or so.

The set up is pretty nice. It's quiet with a hint of a modern spin on the traditional asian atmosphere. It's just a bit hard to find since the sign doesn't jump out at you.

I think the only reason why I'd come back is to try their colossal shaved ice and compare it to Guppies.

I drove by this place and thought, "interesting...i should give this place a try." Parked and walked into the store. I was about to have a heart attack when I saw rows and rows of mochi's with different flavors. Goodbye to Trader's Joe's Frozen Mochi's...HELLO to FRESH MOCHI's!!!!! I have tried many flavors and they are all so good. I recommend to purchase a couple at a time, if you are a slow eater or like to enjoy every bite. The reason being is that the mochis melt very fast!

Mochi with gelato ice cream filling! I'm constantly craving for mochi ever since my last visit.

They have a variety of flavors and I was amazed that their tiramisu flavor was so distinct and on point. I was a little disappointed with their guava flavor though; it was too sour. My favorite flavors are mango and green tea.

This place started out as gelato/shaved ice place...now they've expanded to add Korean food to their menu (which I'm not a fan off).

I do however, LOVE LOVE their dessert....especially with the recent new addition of Beard Papas.  This place is so busy with ppl buying BP all the time, they actually had some baking in the oven at night! Gelato and mochilato are excellent! I have yet to try their macaroons.  This is definitely a place to go for dessert!!!

My sister and I had just gone to Dairy Queen when my sister said she was still hungry after dinner and a Blizzard. We headed over to Mochilato for some mochi gelato deliciousness.

We were pleasantly surprised by the new addition of a Beard Papa's to their store. I've had the cream puffs many times before and I love the cream. The guy filling the cream puffs said that they were out of green tea cream puffs, but when we went to pay, the lady at the register asked us if we wanted green tea or vanilla and we ended up with a green tea cream puff. Very confusing.

Besides that though, the mochilato was good. The lady that helped us was super nice and the gelato inside the mochi wasn't melty or hard. We got 3 guava, a green tea, and a mango. My sister loves the guava because it has an authentic guava taste and is really fragrant. Last time she got the creme brulee and it was nice and thick, but it lacked any substantial flavor. All in all a good experience.

What was I thinking?  This place has been around for a long time now, and although I've been wanting to check it out, I didn't until my friend said, "Let's go!"  I have been sorely missing out.  *tears*

This place is pure awesomeness.  First, their mochilato.  The item that represent.  For a buck and a quarter, you can choose from a variety of flavors.  I only tried their tiramisu, but that alone made me want to try the rest.  In one sitting.  The mochi was so soft, and the gelato so flavorful and smooth.  I also tried the red bean latte, which I absolutely loooved.  It tasted like Japanese oshiruko or zenzai (http://en.wikipedia.or...) - my favorite during the winter.  If you like sweet red beans, then this is the drink for you (and me).

They also have other readily available confections such as manju (traditional Japanese rice cakes), taiyaki/imagawayaki (kind of like pancake with sweet red beans stuffed inside), and macarons.  Their menu includes shaved ice, sweet toast, ice cream waffles, as well as savory items such as kimchee fried rice.  Beard Papa's cream puffs will be making their debut on 12/16 too.  Basically, you can hang out here all day never go hungry (and they're open till 11p on Fri/Sat!).

With the newly renovated mall (the front of the store is more open and spacious now with lots of sitting area) and Mitsuwa opening nearby, I'll probably be popping up here more often.

This is a good place to go with a few friends to catch up and get dessert. They have a bunch of different flavors of Mochilato, my personal favorite is the green tea and mango. i have had their shaved ice a few times and it always satisfies my tummy. They have lots of different fruit and ice cream that can be added. Make sure you share because their portions are a fairly good size and don't eat to fast or you'll get a brain freeze!

They also have gelato which I haven't had yet, and the last time i went i saw MACAROONS!  I didn't get to try it but next time i go it is definitely a must try!!

They just recently added a beard papas which is always a plus! Their flavor of the week right now is coffee, which I  thought was okay, but there is always just the plain cream flavor that I like.

Mochi?! Gelato?! Words can't explain the awesomeness when you combine the two. Boasting 22 flavors, it's easy to get caught up in the delicious plethora of little pastel-colored mochi in front of you. Besides mochi, they also have ice cream waffles, traditional Japanese sweets, shaved ice and macaroons.

I had a hard time choosing which flavors to get but I settled on mint chocolate chip, cookies and cream and peaches and cream. The mint chocolate chip mochi was pretty good, tasted exactly like the ice cream and the powdery, sweet mochi skin was a perfect complement. The cookies and cream mochi wasn't so good, and tasted kind of weird with the mochi skin. Maybe cookies and cream is better served in a regular cone. Now, the peaches and cream mochi was just divine. It tasted like real peaches and cream; I was surprised by how well the fruity, sweet flavor went with the mochi skin.

I'm not even a huge consumer of mochi ice cream, since my teeth are quite sensitive. But I enjoyed this enough to say that Mochilato is fun, innovative and just plain delicious! Each mochi goes for $1.25, which isn't too bad, and the macaroons go for $1.70, I believe. I would've ordered more but 3 pieces of mochi is quite filling on its own.

Mochilato shaved ice any day over Guppy house shaved ice

Hands down.... mochilato gives you quality over quantity that Guppy house gives you. Their green tea shaved ice has texture and even some hidden yogurt at the bottom. They also serve a variety of free mochi. They have way more flavors than your typical frozen section at your supermarket.

Also.... I heard on the grapevine they're bringing Bearded Papa's to Orange County sometime next month... stay tuned.

i have learned not to be too ambitious here. the shaved ices are pretty pricey but they are HUGE.

the presentation is great; the bowl overflows with mochi and different-colored fruits. there are cute little plastic bowls for sharing too! be careful when scooping, though, as there is the initial danger of knocking the whole tower of shaved ice over haha.

the family size is basically a boat of shaved ice...it could probably feed 6-10 people. the junior is good for two; i once attempted the single with just one friend and felt like barfing. more often than not, there will be a poo-colored puddle of melted, unfinished ice at the bottom of the bowl haha.

my favorite part is the vanilla gelato in the middle of the mochilato way shaved ice, which, by the way, is the best of the selection in my opinion!

A great day in Irvine: getting L&L Hawaiian BBQ and then walking a few doors down to get ice cream mochi at Mochilato for dessert.

Alright, so its the same Mikawaya mochilato that you can buy from 99 ranch or trader joes BUT those stores only sell about 3 flavors: strawberry, green tea, chocolate (about $5 for a box of 6 at the supermarket?). I love supermarket mochi but I rarely buy it because they get too frozen/hard in my own fridge and I'd feel like a fatty if I constantly had ice cream mochi in my freezer to eat.

Mochilato sells their ice cream mochi for $1.25 but they have a large variety of flavors. Don't waste your money on plain ol' chocolate or strawberry (because you can get those for much cheaper) - try the cookies and cream, coffee, mango, or chocolate hazlenut.

They seem to sell a bunch of other things but I really only come here for the mochi and the shaved ice. The shaved ice is delicious but kind of pricey for what you get. They just started selling real food (i.e. fried rice) but ummm I don't think I'd want fried rice from a dessert place.

Place is very well decorated and has huge wooden tables. It looks like a great place to study because its usually quiet but I've never really seen anybody study there (Do UCI kids study?). There's mostly groups of people just eating mochi and chillin.

Came in at night. They were already closed but they still let us in. Such a nice owner.

They were getting ready to clean up and pack all the gelato away!

Since the last time I was here, they changed up the interior a lot. I liked it the way it was before.

$1.25 - Mochi - I got the pistachio flavored one.

It was good and nothing extraordinary. A couple friends got a few other things but I didn't get to try it. It's a good place to go to if you're in the area.

The mochi are good. My favorites are mango and green tea. Tiramisu was a little too watery and not solid enough so it tasted more like ice cream than gelato. But overall, it is a great place.

I recommend you getting the triangle rice ball here. It is excellent. This place has good location, great decor, great seating, good staffs, and good dessert.

I never even knew such a place like this existed! I only stepped foot in here because I had a CampusCred coupon thing for a free mochilato (normally $1.75) which is basically mochi with gelato ice cream inside.

I ordered and tried the following flavors: Green Tea, Guava, Red Bean and Pistachio. My favorite was probably the Guava just because it felt super refreshing.  I feel like when you come here, order a flavor that you would not normally be able to try so try something new!

This place was super clean and even have other things besides mochilatos such as their signature shaved ice, chichi dango mochi, and other Japanese snacks. This is such a great hang out place.

    The short of it:
    - Variety of freshly made mochi gelato balls
    - They also have other sweet treats like shave ice, gelato, japanese red bean pancakes, etc.
    - Open late for late night dessert cravings
    - Favs: chocolate hazelnut, cookies and cream

    The long of it:
This place is pretty unique as I haven't come across any other dessert place like it. They specialize in gelato filled mochi and it comes in an assortment of flavors. Aside from that they have shave ice, red bean pancakes, and different beverages. There are large tables and plenty of chairs for large groups. You can also get your mochi gelato to go and they will place it in a container and wrap it for you so you can store it in the freezer at home. That way you can have a supply for yourself at home. The only thing is that it can be a little pricey for one little mochi ball of gelato (a little over a dollar each). But, then again they specially made so I guess thats the price you pay for.

Tiramisu and Hazelnut are really yummy flavors!

I also ordered some greeen herb-infunsed mochi (not the mochilato) just to try it. It is pretty bland tasting compared to the mochilato and just has red bean paste on the inside. Was not very impressed by it. But my tiramisu mochilato was amazinggg!

Love mochi and love geltao... so this place is bomb. It's kinda pricey, but definitely worth it :)

I come here once in awhile to catch up with friends. The mochilato portions are large enough to share and they have a variety of mochi!

This is the place I go when I have a craving for mochi and don't feel like getting the one at the grocery freezer section. Here, the mochi is fresh and the flavors are different. Mochi here is delicious. I love the variety of flavors. I've tried vanilla, hazelnut, chocolate, tiramisu, dulce de leche, strawberry. All yummy. The mochi cost about a dollar plus tax each (correct me if I'm wrong).

At the register they also have a variety of mochi candy available, made by a local bakery. I got the kinako mochi and it was delicious.

In addition to mochi, Mochilato also serves a variety of hot foods and drinks. I still have yet to try the hot dishes. Inside the restaurant is a nice table area to sit down and eat, with a few friends or a large group.

Mochilato is located in a shopping center that is heavily under construction, so it might be a little hard to find. It's a few doors away from a Ralphs, Denny's, and Wendy's, as well as others.

    MMmm... mochi....

I've been here a few times and I always leave a happy customer. They've got all kinds of desserts that range from gelato, Japanese sweets, shaved ice, to mochi (of course!). The flavors and freshness of their gelato filled mochi are simply refreshing and good. Compared to frozen mochi which you buy at the grocery store, this is much better by far! The reason is simple; the mochi is actually chewier (in a good way), more flavorful, less dusted with rice flour on the outside, and filled with a huge variety of homemade flavors. I've tried plum, tiramisu, vanilla, peach, and a whole bunch of other flavors- they are all fantastic.

As for the environment, it's tastefully decorated, clean and has plenty of large and small tables so you can relax and tackle that huge mountain of shaved ice goodness at your leisure.

The best mochi wrapped ice cream here is definitely the pistachio. Buy it because you cannot buy it in stores. The other flavors, mango, strawberry you can buy in a pack of 6 at local food stores.

Mochilato is good in the sense that when you buy, the mochi is ready to eat meaning at the correct temperature. When you purchase from a store, you don't know how long you need to defrost for because if you eat straight out of the freezer, it's too hard.

    $1.25 per mochi, affordable.
