One of Moby Dick's Favorite Reviews What's This?
I wish more places were like this in LA:
Good music videos
Cheap, stiff drinks served in mugs
Non-assholey bartenders
Hot, older patrons that ain't about posing and shit
Pinball machine, bitch!
*le sigh*

Love my gays and this bar!
Seriously, it's like a gay cheers :) strong drinks, regular old creepy men at the bar, and local gays.! Loves it!!! but it defintely is a divey type bar, not a upper scale bar.
side note : There is a section of the bar that is really out of place.. there are arcade games? wtf? weird......

OK so I was expecting this place to be scary. BUT I LOOOOVED how it wasn't crowded unlike qbar-a place that makes you feel disgusting and sweaty and yuk.
MY cheap ass also LOVED the specials ($6 2-for-1 Margarita frozen drink every day except Sunday, god bless you) and the bartender for entertaining my drunk questions. I think my friends loved the retro junk playing on the vidscreens last night too.
YAY
I like this place
This bar was my oasis when I first moved to the neighborhood/City four years ago. It's just around the corner from my house, which makes it one of my favorite places to mosey on down from my street. It was a place to come home to after a day of studying, grab a drink and play a round (or twelve) of pinball. The bartenders are always nice, always tending to everyone and not the good-looking ones first, and it's truly one of the gem bars that has yet to revamp itself with the LA look of new establishments coming into the neighborhood. There is always a resident artist monthly, one of the best happy-hours in the neighborhood (because of the good-looking after work crowds) and a place to find locals on the weekends too.

This place is a straight woman's heaven! Cheap drinks, friendly people, good music, clean bathrooms with no line :) For stopping by to check out the place with friends on a short vacations trip...this place is good in my books! Did I mention cheap drinks!
It's an ok bar. it's cool if you just want to hang out.
Went here for the first time with a couple of friends over the weekend. This bar rocks! The drinks are tasty and strong, but not expensive. We had a blast. Everyone there was friendly. The bartenders kept the drinks coming quick! A couple of hours and our group was completely wasted.
I went here with some friends for the first time and I had a great time. The drinks here were strong, which I like, and all the other bar patrons seemed very nice and relaxed.
I would avoid the bathroom though unless you really really have to go. They have a full length mirror in front of the trough so there is no way you can hide without any strangers seeing it.
This place isn't bad. I like it from time to time, but I just have to be in the mood. The people there are always pleasant, and it's supposedly a Bear Bar, but I don't really see a lot of Bears in there. Oh well...
The drinks are always stiff and strong, the way I like my men, and the music isn't too overpowering. For those of you who like pool, this is a great venue for that as the pool table is in a seperate room where you won't worry about impaling someone in their vodka soda as you're aiming for that 8-ball!

Star #1: Pinball machines! Three of 'em! More bars need pinball.
Star #2: Margarita machine! It makes the margaritas like a Slurpee, mmm!
Star #3: The mirror above the pee trough is big enough that you can make sure your clothes aren't looking wonky AND check out the junk on the dude beside you.
Star #4: Cool music videos. Lots of "Hey I never knew that had a video for it!" and "I haven't heard this song in a while..."
Minus one star: Crowd is on the WASP-y side. Not really for me.
Come here if you feel like fighting with queens and fat men in their late 40s.

Probably my favorite bar to grab a drink in the Castro besides 440. Always a good time here. Super laid back crowd, bartenders are fun/cute and pour strong drinks. No pretentious BS, just a cool local hangout with a pool table and a fish tank.
A great place to come hang out with friends and not worry about music blaring so loud that you can't hear yourself talk...
I decided to bring a long lost friend of mine here who leads a quiet life in the south. I thought this this bar would be the perfect mix of unpretentious, and not too clubby. I was hoping for him to have a great experience in the Castro, but instead we got the cold shoulder. Hmph. Our drinks were great, service was quick, and the bar itself is great. The clientele seemed pushy, literally. We finally left because we got tired of being plowed into.
Cheap drinks. No compulsion to dance.
Not a lot of obnoxious little kids running around.
Neighborhoodly.
Mellow.
...and one of my ex's avoids it like the plague.
Loves it.

Yeh it was fun. Not so packed you can't move. Not so dead you can't enjoy the eye candy.
Moby Dick is probably my favorite neighborhood Bar in The Castro. The Bartenders are very nice and personable (both Johns and Patrick are the best).
The bar is clean, the drinks are not over priced, and there is pool and pinball. The music is not too loud, making it a nice place to meet friends for conversation. They are known for their 2-for-1 Frozen Margaritas. They are offered at the 2-for-1 rate all the time, and are popular.
Unfortunately their happy hour doesn't include Call drinks, only Well drinks and a daily special. It would be nice if they had a happy hour food.
I've been here and it's cool, but frankly, I do not even need to come in, because their shit is out in the street: I was driving home not long ago at 2AM, and as I came up to the corner it sits on, I heard a crack like a gunshot.
A short, kidney-bean shaped woman probably in her sixties, wearing nothing but shoes, white socks, and a turquoise one-piece bathing suit, was administering discipline with a leather flail to some bent-over dude while other people watched.
Friendly place, but clearly you don't wanna get out of line with the clientele.

This is a great place to get a drink eith friends, but what I do not like is the lack of racial diversity. I have been in that place so many time and have been the spot in the room.
If you are into White boys then this is the place to go. If you like boys of all races, then go elsewhere.

I like this place!! I'm usually one of the only women in the entire place and the men want absolutely nothing to do with me! They will be friendly and share their space, unlike at the 440 club on Castro (!!!) but usually only when I initiate it.
Otherwise, the pinball is great! Addam's Family is my favorite, but watch out for the one of the far left, it tends to jam.

I was the only female in the place! LOL! I couldn't stay long, but I got a drink anyway, a long island ice tea. I've been told a good LIT tastes like tea & u can't taste the alcohol. By that definition this one wasn't good, though I liked it and drank it all! The atmosphere is cool & they play music videos. Cool!
I was recently mocking on a gaysian friend of mine who was at the Mix for drinks not too long ago. Yeah yeah yeah he was depressed and sought out the company of other men at a cheesy bar and before I really started mocking on him I remembered a time in my life when I used to go to Moby Dick with a co-worker of mine.
I was new to San Francisco and hadn't established a solid group of gays to go out with yet so I was relegated to co-workers who were nice but who wore mustaches and a splash of leather on casual Fridays. Gross. Anyway, Moby Dick is where men with mustaches hang out in the Stro. But not like leather Daddy mustaches, with the riding cap, assless leather chaps, and nice biceps. No no no, this is more like the mustache, stone washed jeans, tank top that says Pride 93 Canton, Ohio tucked into the jeans all secured with a woven belt set hang out.
Of course there I am all of 26, having just moved from Chelsea in NYC where men are men and all of the sudden I'm smack in the middle of where gay men from the Midwest come to retire. Why am I so judgy you wonder? This will happen when drunk patrons at Moby Dick press their Moby Dick up against you while you are trying to order a drink.
Anyhoo, my gaysian friend and I are going to grow mustaches in the coming weeks actually he is still working on arm pit hair but I'm going to grow a mustache and him and I are going to go to Moby Dick, order vodka tonics, sit at the bar, and talk about how much we miss Twiggy.

OK OK Brian G. called me out on my review, which rightfully needs an update. Prior to earlier this year, I had never been to Moby Dick's on a weeknight, which is essentially where it's really at. The crowd is minimal, the drink specials are rockin' and the atmosphere is totally chill. I myself like to play or watch others play pool. You meet some rad folks. So my sage advice would dictate coming here on weeknights but avoiding it like the plague on weekend nights.

I'm sure this bar is great early in the evening or not on the weekend. However on a Friday night?… Read more »
I feel like you're not a true San Francisco fag hag until you have been to Moby Dick with said homo friend. I was one out of three women there.
Tonight I had a great time. Pretty good music with great eye candy (that you can't have because...well...they don't go for the vag damnit). Definitely for the early 30's plus crowd.
It was fun talking to the men about their next day Folsom Street Fair get-ups.
Nice and strong margaritas. I was good to go after one.

Surprised to see my best friend Natalye S. two star review of this place. This is my favorite early evening/late afternoon bar in the Castro! Fucking margarita machine and free pool on Mon/Tues during happy hour. Cheap strong drinks. Yay for the Castro!!
This is the place you get dragged into going. The only reason you agree to go is because they have reasonably tasty 2 for 1 frozen margaritas, except on Sundays when they have 2 for 1 frozen Sex on the Beach drinks that taste like cough syrup and stale Pepto Bismol. Sunday is the night to skip.
Most of the bartenders are nice, and the music is pretty good. However, it's nearly impossible to enjoy your drink comfortably when it's crowded, as often is the case on the weekends.
You could probably simulate the experience of Moby Dick by standing in a cramped closet with your friend, watch some music videos and spill drinks on each other.

After having a nice "ladies" lunch at SPQR, my friend and I decided we needed to have one drink in the Castro. We had never been to Moby Dick's before, but they had a huge sign advertising Happy Hour, so we decided to check it out.
The bartender was very friendly and was not afraid to pour a stiff drink. We ended up having Long Island Ice Tea. You know the drink you have not ordered since you were 22? At $4 a pop, they went down pretty easily. Thank god this place is cash only, as we ran out of money about the 5Th round! I had an early morning flight to Atlanta, so this really could have got ugly.
We also played a bit of pin ball and were just having a lot of fun. I can't really compare this to other bars in The Castro, but I thought this was one hell of a good time!!
Thanks Di. :o)

No Lisa H, Thank you.
What a silly , drunken last night in SF :0) Good god the chocolate and nasty chinese food we had after should have proven fatal...we must have iron stomachs.
Moby's had a Fabulous bartender, cheap strong drinks and pinball...what else do you need? except a cool friend to hang with!

Moby Dick
*Smirk*
Oh you gays, you're just so precious. I could put you in my pocket and take you home. The boyfriend might have something to say about that, I don't think we're at the orgy-phase in our relationship - isn't that the 5th anniversary gift?
I get so confused.
Moby Dick. It is a bar. Pretty local. Nothing particularly stand out, nothing particularly bad. I felt youngish. I'd probably come here for pre-drinking drinking if I lived in the 'hood. But I don't, so I won't.
As an aside, I kind of wish straight bars were named similarly.

I stumbled on Moby Dick first when my friend Zach introduced me to it.
Then it became something I'd stop by when I was on my Sunday booze cruise in the city.
"I'm getting sober, y'all... we need a drink special RIGHT NOW!"
It's a great bar in my opinion just because it knows what it's doing and is a fun time. It can really crowded on weekends but if you go there when nobody else is drinking - you should be game for a good and comfortable spot.
The men's bathroom is a bit odd and pervy, but that just adds all the magic to Moby Dick.
And he probably wouldn't have wanted it any other way...

Let's just say I leave "reasonably near" moby dick. I enjoy coming here early on a weekday before we head out on our evening. I would say it is rather crowded Fri-Sat night but Sunday seems to be the hottest night. This is also a fav for the sporty gay softball guys.
I wish their bathrooms weren't so stinky I could smell them if I open one of our back windows. So for that I must take away a star.
The drinks are stiff and they've got a nice aquarium, a great happy hour, pinball, and pool... what more do you need? Oh! If it's Britney's new album, they've got that too!

But dang, I had a lot of fun here! Even ran into people I knew. The video was funny (Jackass) and the music was good. :)

Two for one frozen margaritas, nice atmosphere, hunky bartender.
OK so this is part of my on-going saga with my main gays, which has been re-invented by a recent break up. Have you ever noticed how break ups cause you to make decisions like accepting an invitation to Moby Dick's on a Tuesday at 9:30 pm with your hairdresser and his hot boyfriend, who, by the way, have no real interest in you being there and are actually just inviting you bacause you are recently single and they are good loving friends? Well.....this new compulsion has lead me to many a gay bar recently, and I've lived in the Castro for three years and never been to any of them before....
(don't worry, once I am feeling more *myself* I will begin hitting the Mission again with my cab light *on*)
Hit this place last week, and while I wanted to despise it, I rather enjoy the name cause, well, like any red blooded female I love the pirates. Which is weird, cause I've never met one, not do I suspect that I ever will, but am consumately sure they are HOT. Sorry, I digress.
Had a great time here!!? I know, I know, seemed bizarre cause it was filled with cruising gay men...but it was also filled with locals just looking for a chat and a friend, so while my hairdresser and his delectible BF made out in the corner after shots of Patron, I made friends with a guy named Beckett and we discussed Waiting for Godot, my favorite all time play, until I felt successfully gorgeoous again.
Long story short:
Don't judge a book by its cover
Don't forget that friends are to be found in the most unlikely of places
Don't forget to shave and wear cute undies even when you go out in the Castro cause you never know.... ;)
The End

This bar is great. It doesn't seem like everyone is on crack here. Or if they are, hide it way better. Its where all the little gay boys play when they grow up, get jobs in finance, aquire a "husband" and a dog, and stop giving each other blowjobs in the bathroom. They give each other blowjobs in a dark corner behind the pool table instead. Oh, yes, FYI, this bar has a pool table.
Wait, am I in Starbucks? Oh, whew, I was confused for a second when I had to ask for a key to use the restroom. Double tall vodka tonic, extra ice and a lime. My name is Carla D. Next!

Moby Dick's 2 for 1 cold slushy Sex on the Beach special on Sundays is pretty hard to deny when you're passing through and a little parched. The vibe is laid back and the crowd is a little more mature (not necessarily older, but just less wild) than the few other Castro bars I've been to, though I'm sure it gets wild on weekend nights. The only time I've been here was on a warm and non-overcast summer afternoon, and the windows and doors were all open so the room was airy and cool, loud with chatter, all with a 90s and today pop music backdrop. LOVED IT.

So there is a group of Castro boys - lots of product in the hair, waay too much time staring at themselves in the mirror - think of themselves as 'the cool kids' and fit better in L.A. These boys are NOT at Moby Dick's. THANK GOD. Its like an oasis of genuine cool. I love the attitude here - meaning, there is NONE. Guys are great and friendly. Drinks are solid. Watching pool is awesome. The fish tank is brilliant. One of my favorite things about the Castro. So glad Moby's is here.
