The Boyfriend and I were walking home from the Austin City Limits Festival on Saturday when we passed the Mmmpanadas truck.

"What's an empanada?" the Boyfriend asked.

"Well, it's sort of like an Aussie meat pie," I replied, knowing his childhood in Australia would help him relate. "Take a hand-held meat pie, but make it a halfsie. Then stuff it with Mexican/Latin American ingredients. Boom--empanada."

"Whoa," he answered. "That sounds pretty good!"

So, of course, when we passed the Mmmpanadas truck again Sunday night, he had to stop and try one. We got the Green Chili Chicken stuffed empanada, and it was amaaaaziiiiiing. I was expecting a small, slightly-burned concoction, but instead it was light and fluffy. (It was also pretty big: larger than a dollar bill, and about an inch across). The chipotle mayo was definitely the kicker here, as it gave the whole thing a great pop of flavor.

I think the Boyfriend is now an empanada lover!

I love the Mmmpanadas food, its great, however the management and business practices are not good.

We hired them for a party and they showed up 45 minutes to an hour late.  They arrived when guests were arriving and getting settled, and it was disappointing.  Not to mention, a friend of mine wanted to do business with them for another event, and set up a time to talk.   The day after they set a time to chat, the owner responded that they had been booked for the event, obviously using my friend for leverage.  There is a polite way to manage a business, and a way that hinders your business.  If this continues, I don't think they will be around for much longer.

One of my besties and I grabbed lunch here during a Saturday of awesomeness in Austin.  The woman who took our order was really chill and really nice, she gets an A+.  The food was pretty good too.  My only complaint is that the dough was just a little too burnt/crispy for me, but then again I prefer mine softer and some might like them darker/crispier.  Nonetheless, the selection is great, and the fillings tasted delish!  I think I got a green chile chicken and a pulled pork one, the two filled me up, but I could definitely see myself getting three next time!

So true story, when I first came here with a friend, I said, "I don't want to go here unless they are selling real panda meat."  He stared at me in disbelief and said, "it says panadas, not pandas."
What the difference an A makes.
Sadly I can't give this place an A, except for effort.  My main gripes is lack of photos and an example of what to expect.  Despite this, I had two, and tasted two others.  They were all very nice, but way to hot due to them cooking it too high (or maybe microwaving, it was just too hot) and was also very messy.  Flavor was good, although I had a desire to tear it open and dump in hot sauce and pepper.

So a few months ago, I decided to take some empanadas to a tapas party.  Whole Foods and Central Market sell pretty much everything you can imagine, but they do not sell empanadas.  While I found this quite curious, I decided to continue my search and I learned from my friends at Wheatsville that a local company called mmmpanadas was filling the void.  I rushed over to Wheatsville and bought up a bunch of black bean and green chili chicken.

The empanadas were definitely a party favorite ... as for me though, I'm a little late to the party.  It wasn't until a couple of weeks ago that I finally clued in and visited the mmmpanadas truck at Mueller. This place is a rolling empanada palace with a vast selection that far surpasses what is available in the prepared foods case at the grocery store.  In addition to my old stand-by - the spicy black bean - I expanded my mmmpanada horizons by checking out the Argentian (ground beef and egg) and a mango and ginger.

I still stand by the spicy black bean as my old faithful, but I also liked mango ginger.  I wanted the Argentinian to have a little more kick in the form of olives and raisins, but I would definitely eat it again as is. At just over $3, these hot little honeys are an affordable indulgence available in an array of interesting flavors.  The only problem is that you might buy three, intending to save one for later, and accidentally eat them all.  It happens to the best of us.

    Mmm is right!

Mmmpanadas trailer was at the Austin marathon this year, and may I just say, Amen. It was absolutely glorious for them to show their support and give me a reason to run 13.1 miles back to where they were parked.

We got one of everything. They were out of the sweet one (cinnamon) so I guess that's pretty popular. Will have to try next time. My favorites were hands down the Argentinean (funny cuz that describes my bf) and the spinach and mushroom (CLOSE SECOND). The former was ground beef and scrambled egg. We also tried a breakfast empanada with eggs and bacon, and a chile chicken empanada. Personally, I would skip the chicken next time--the inner contents just weren't as juicy and flavorful as the other three. They gave us three different sauces but the lemon garlic was my favorite (and great on the spinach mushroom empanada).

The empanadas are $4 each which is even more than they cost at Buenos Aires Cafe. But, they are larger in size. We split each one among three people. I'd probably eat one with a salad if I were being healthy, two if I just wanted to fuel up.

The guy in the truck was nice too. Friendly, accommodating, and quick to give us our bag of food. That is exactly what a person needs after running a half marathon!

In keeping with the sexual prowess that encompasses the majority of my reviews, the first thing that came to mind when I saw the name of this place was the stereotypical fake porno girl moans.

Now that we have moved beyond that, we can dive right into the warm pockets of stuffed Mexican goodness (Oops I did it again)

Going full frontal on this one, I did not score these babies from the truck directly, my lazy ass was able to bike down to Wheatsville and pick and choose what ones I wanted to give a whirl.

After having a Pokemon moment, I procured a sampling of the most appealing flavors to my sensitive palette.

    Breakfast
    Spinach mushroom
    Cinnamon
    Chile chicken

In short, the chicken and breakfast were the equivalent of dry sex, to much of a tease and not a lot going on.

The spinach mushroom was better, like a quick tug but with a bit more grace.

The cinnamon was the all star, like a cheerleader getting taken on by the whole team.

In summary: Sex is still better than empanadas but if cinnamon is involved it might get elevated to porn star levels.

    Staying classy

After eating Mmmpanadas I'm afraid I will only have Yuckpanadas from now on -- they've ruined me for all other empanadas!

My brisk stride toward The Gingerman broke into a gleeful skip when I saw the Mmmmpanada cart in the distance. After perusing the menu and being assured that the Green Chile Chicken Empanada was more flavorful than spicy, I forked over my four dollars, waited around for a few minutes, and was handed a bag with a perfectly cooked pastry around the size of a half sandwich.

The pastry was flaky and buttery and absolutely the Platonic ideal of what a pastry shell should be. The green chile chicken filling was packed with flavor! Inexplicably, the filling was somehow able to avoid the dreaded dryness that often befalls chicken, while still managing to stay neatly inside the empanada (instead of spilling all over my shirt) even as it's being consumed by someone skipping down the street singing the "I have an Mmmpanada!" song.

These empanadas deserve all the Mmmmmmm's they get!

You are just like my ex.

I never know where you are. You randomly text me (via twitter) to remind me how much I like you, and I swoon like a moron over the high school bad boy. You DO think about me, I gush.

You always have the best intentions, but things never seem to go the way you plan. I've never met your family. I don't know if there's a future for us. Every time we part ways, I feel a heaviness in my chest. Stomach.

Like today: when I skipped outside between SxSW conference sessions to meet, as we did yesterday, you let me down. Your soy chorizo and brie empanada just a cloud shape in the sky. Poof. You don't even care that I would prefer more brie in there, or worry about when we'll see each other again. One day, you're there for me. The next day you give me the invisible finger.

So help me God, I am never buying your empanadas again. If I can't find your truck.

I came to this place with high hopes, fresh off amazing stops at mouth-watering Franklin's BBQ and crunchy, salty weiners from Chris' Little Chicago.  I expected nothing less than perfection from another Austin food trailer.

I'll get straight to the point.  What I loved so much from the other trailers in Austin that wow-ed my tastebud is that the food was absolutely freshly-cooked.  I ordered the Argentinean, filled with ground beef, a hard-boiled egg, and olives.  The empanadas were popping out like crazy, with people being served 3-5 minutes after their order.

Waiting with a couple friends, I joked that these were just fresher "Hot Pockets" and I think the stand proved me right.  I watched as they put already cooked empanadas into a small oven (warmer).  It was kinda sad,  when I bit into my food it was luke-warm at best and did have a crispyness to it however it was chewy because the empanadas weren't fried to order.

Honestly, I would rather wait another 5 minutes and get my food to order, than have to pay $4 to watch a guy "reheat" an already cooked empanada, sorry.

On a strictly taste level, it had all the right ingredients, it just didn't pop in my mouth like I expected it too.  The samosas (I know they're not empanadas) at Ken's donuts have more flavor than this fried pastry.

My heart pitter patters as I drive down 5th street... is it???  Could it possible be???? Is that a red trailer that I see????  Holy shit, the mmmpanada truck is on the corner!!!!  Hip Hip Hooray....I'm FINALLY going to get to eat a god damn empanada!!    My weird excitement has built over the last month or so because I would go on days that it wasn't there or to late in the day to catch it (check out their website for their hours before you make the trek down).   I might need to attend a self help group, because I have totally been stalking the mmmmpanada truck for the past month.

I tried the lunch special... which is 2 empanadas and a drink for $7.50... that is decent deal but not great.   I went with one savory and one sweet empanada. My savory choice was the chicken with green chilies..... The empanada was full of tasty chicken, slightly spicy (I'm a wimp with spicy food so in reality it might be more normal than spicy). The crust was good, not great.... I think the crispiness of the crust was lost when it was reheated.     I got two of the sauces... one was salsa and the other was a chipotle mayo. They were both good toppings that added a nice flavor.

The sweet empanada was peach. It was okay. The peaches were sweet and slightly tart and a couple of sprinkles of cinnamon on the outside. A scoop of vanilla ice cream would have done wonders for this little guy. I love peaches but I don't think I would get this again.

I am torn with giving them 3 or 4 stars....I think they are a solid 3.5.  Their hours of operation lose them a half star but they are a local business, so I'll round up!

Oh. My. God. This place is so good, I had to yelp it from my iPod at the starbucks on 6th!

I saw the trailer when I got off the bus, and since it's a new trailer food concept, I had to try it. I randomly ordered the chicken and green chili empanada, and it also came with chipotle mayo on the side. The empanda was quick and I thought large enough, but as soon as I took a bite, I knew I wanted more and more and more. It was amazing! And cheap!

You all need to go here, because I don't want this trailer going anywhere.

I can't say it enough, so so good!

While walking aimlessly around downtown Austin during SXSW my friend suggested we hit up Mmmpanadas. In previous years I always found it fun just to say the name over and over again mmmpanadas, mmmpanadas -- ok you get the deal but never had the opportunity to actually try one.  My fortune this year would allow me to try the place out twice! The first time I went they were out of the Green Chile Chicken which I really wanted to try but no worries instead I ordered the Spinach and Feta.  Somehow I must've confused the young lad who was taking my order cause he asked me if I had ordered 2 and I said no just one, and then I handed over my card and when I got the receipt realized it said $8 instead of $4.  Silly boy.  So I politely told him of his mistake but decided that in exchange I would just get another empanada.  So then I decided on a Ham & Cheese.

The empanadas were nice and flaky and mm mm buttery.  The spinach and feta one was a delight, the ham and cheese however not so much.  There was definitely more ham than cheese and felt a bit dry.  The lemon aioli however to dip it in was heavenly.  I just wish I could've had more and in a wider cup. But for $8 overall I felt pretty satisfied

My second encounter was thanks to IFC, they had an Mmmpanadas truck parked in front of the IFC House next to the The Driskill and were giving away empanadas to the first 500 people.  Apparently my friends and I were among those first 500.  They had a limited selection of the empanadas they were giving away and had sold out of about half of them.  So in the end I settled for a Soy Chorizo w/Brie and a Ginger Mango.  The Soy Chorizo was absolutely brilliant.  Spicy and hearty I would've never known I wasn't eating meat.  It came with salsa dipping sauce which also was very good. I had been afraid that it might've been very generic but it was rather refreshing.  The Ginger Mango was delightful. I'm not a fan of ginger AT ALL but it was subtle and didn't make me want to yack.  And of course they were FREE so who am I to complain really about any of that?

Mmmpanadas has made me want to search around my hometown see if we have anything like it. Probably not as where I live consists mostly of hoighy toighty country clubbers who most likely don't know what an empanada is.  I guess I can only dream...

Mmmmmm is right! Today I discovered some of the best empanadas I've ever had!!!

A coworker and I walked over to mmmpanadas for lunch to check out the trailer on 5th and Brazos. I ordered two tasty, flaky bundles of goodness- a chopped beef empanada and a black bean empanada. YUM! The black bean was nice and spicy and the chopped beer had a nice combo of meat and sauce.

Unfortunately they had run out of the asparagus prosciutto and the spinach mushroom (darn you Keri for ordering the last ones =), but I was told by my coworker that they were VERY tasty. The accompanying chipotle mayo was delish! $7.50 for two empanadas and a drink was a decent deal.

Good thing to note- they accept credit cards, so no cash needed!

This is a great place for grabbing a quick lunch or late night snack. One empanada makes a perfect snack, while two will fill you up. The truck is spotless and the service is outstanding.

The empanada's are also homemade with quality ingredients that will go easy on your stomach. My personal favorites are the Spicy Black Bean and the Green Chile Chicken.

My workmates were obsessed with the mmmmpanadas truck while we were in Austin. And I can't say I blame them - the food smells amazing, it's cheap as all get out, and the staff are the absolute loveliest people.

My review is not based on food (though my colleagues will tell you that the chicken or beef empanadas are must-eats), but rather on my great interaction with the staff here.

I asked whether they carried anything that I could eat and they were completely frank and honest with me about not having vegan items. They actually went on to recommend some other places nearby I might want to try. We chatted with them for a few minutes about our project and why we were at SXSW and they were kind enough to take some of our cards and pass them out to people. Two thumbs up for that. Definitely a nice spot to patronize while you're in town - especially if you're in a rush.

This place is right by my work so I've been a few times. It's good stuff, appropriately priced. The soy chorizo is my favorite, if only they would add more brie it would be perfect (albeit maybe not doable for the cheap price). Sometimes they are cash only, so be prepared.

    SUMMARY

    Delicious, crispy, satisfying.

I had the BLACK BEAN EMPANADA

The filling was well stuffed with whole and mashed black beans, very well seasoned with the usual Latin suspects (cumin, chili powder, I suspect) and spicy from jalapenos, but not overwhelmingly so. There were a few corn kernels throughout and hint of cilantro. The crust was delicious, which isn't tough when you use vegetable
shortening, a butter substitute. I'd have preferred the more natural butter, but it was still good.

I bought the empanada at Royal Blue Grocery downtown and heated it up in a toaster oven.

This trailer is my new favorite food out of a trailer!

They offer several vegetable options.  I am not a Vegetarian but the veggie options sounded great.  I went with the 2 Mmmpanadas and a drink  for 7.50.

I ordered the Asparagus Prosciutto with Blue cheese and the Spinach and Mushroom w/ Pine Nuts and Goat Cheese mmmpanadas with an orange juice as drink choice.  Granted they are not vegetarian but veggie based....

All I have to say is YUMMY...

And the owner told me they will be serving the savory empanadas at the Nomad Bar...

    They are down town T-Th 7:30 AM - 1:30PM and TH- Sat 10PM -3AM.

Until I saw Henry's ROTD, I totally forgot about Mmmpanadas!

Some friends and I were at the Pachanga Festival this year and Mmmpandas were there at the festival food court. After perusing the selection, I decided on a green chili and chicken empanada.

Before I knew it, it was gone. Totally delicious. Plus they heat them up just enough. Not so much that you can't eat your tasty pocket of foodie goodness for, like, hours! I hate that. Also, the filling was very well balanced - the chili to chicken ratio was excellent.

Anyways, next time I see their truck, I'm pulling over to try another one, so if you are in the way, watch out!

Stop #5 on the Austin Food Cart Pilgrimage '09.

Though this experience was not award winning, I'd like to try Mmmpanadas again.

The guys who were working were super nice, and their cart smells like heaven. It's also super clean.

We tries the vegan option - soy chorizo and brie. It came piping hot, and the chorizo product was pretty good - salty, spicy, and substantial. We had to search pretty hard to find the brie, and then when we thought we saw it, we decided that there was not enough to affect the flavor.

I want to try it again because the menu was so compelling! Really neat choices. Too bad Fliphappy was closed. --It was supposed to be stop #6.  If we had known that, we would have had dessert at Mmmpandas.

    Damn it!
I had really high hopes. Maybe I just had the wrong things?

I tried two of their empanadas at Nomad last night, and was a little disappointed. I liked the flakey crust, and over all there was pretty good flavor...but where's the freaking CHEESE??

A Veggie chorizo and brie empanada? Sounds great, doesn't it? I mean, except for the fact that chorizo flavors will likely completely overpower a cheese like brie. Fortunately, that wasn't going to be a problem, since there was practically no brie in there at all. Oh sure, I found evidence of small bits of it here and there when I looked closely, but I had to really search for it visually and couldn't taste it at all.

I also had the spinach, mushroom, goat cheese, and pine nut one. Guess what I found inside? Spinach! And...a few pine nuts! And...well, that's pretty much it. Not even a hint of goat cheese that I could see or taste, and not a mushroom to be found.

They were served with a chipotle aioli, which I tried and it had pretty good flavor. In fact, I kinda wish I'd had more of that stuff, as it was the most flavorful part of the meal.

I hope I just caught a bad batch or maybe ordered the wrong thing. I really love me some empanadas, but haven't been able to find a good place for them here in Austin.

I hate to be a Debbie Downer on Mmmpanadas, but I didn't find their empanadas to be all that remarkable, especially considering the hype in both the Austin American Statesman and GQ Magazine (which is how I initially found out about this place).

Unfortunately, the customer in front of me took the last green chile chicken empanada, which appears to be the clear favorite of those in line in front of me, so I grabbed two others:  The brisket and spinach mushroom.

I found the brisket empanada, which included pieces of chopped brisket, beans, and onion, to be a bit too sweet for my tastes.  The flavor all seemed very muddled together and somewhat monotonous after the 3rd or 4th bite.  The delicious salsa seemed to help add a bit of kick, but shouldn't a sauce be a compliment and not requirement?  Perhaps anywhere other than Austin, people would think of this thing as bliss, but when you come out with anything "BBQ" in BBQ Mecca (otherwise known as Central Texas), you're going to be up against some pretty stiff competition.

While the BBQ empanada was a let down, the Spinach Mushroom was even worse.  I'm not sure if it's being overwhelmed by the eggy-ness of the dough, or the spinach, but the two ingredients I was most interested in (the feta cheese and pine nuts) seemed totally lost and indistinguishable amongst everything.  The lemony butter sauce didn't seem to help that much either.

I had some pretty high expectations for this place and was ultimately let down.  I would like to eventually try the green chile chicken empanada (and others) before I give my final judgement but ,for now,  Mmmpanadas gets 2 stars out of 5.

There's something unappealing about Mexican food served from a catering truck that has always kept me away from them. Maybe its the fact that most are stationed at construction sites or that most of the workers speak little English and the chances of ordering something you didn't want are high. Either way, I've kept my distance away  from taco trucks for as long as I could until my extended stay in Austin during ACL.

Walking up and down on Barton Springs during ACL means there is a plethora of  food stands and catering trucks line up on the side of the street waiting for festival-goers to hound down at their stations and gorge on their overly priced food. Mmmpanandas on the other hand was marginally priced and was eye catching. Who can miss a bright red taco truck with Christmas lights hanging on the window?

My boyfriend and I each got our own empanada, I got the Green Chile chicken and he got the Argentinean. My chicken was a little dry, but I definitely tasted the chili. It was enough kick to enjoy and not spicy to ruin my meal. The complimentary aioli sauces also gave my meal more flavors which made it more appetizing. My boyfriend got the better empanada, no additional sauce needed. The Argentinean was stuffed with a hard boiled egg, seasoned ground beef and olives. It tasted like what a fiesta should feel like in your mouth--sombreros, mariachis and all.  It's literally deliciousness in a little pocket served from a taco truck!

Mmmpanadas look like plump happy calzones that just devoured sweet grandma's pot pies.   I wish they would have pictures of their Plumpanadas (cut in half) to show off the ingredients.

I was on my way to ACL hauling my free Yelp gear and standing in the rain checking out the menu and looking lost, I was feeling more like a tart than a savvy empanada shopper.

I had made up my mind on the spincach-mushroom when the guy in the trailer recommended all but that one... hmmmm!  I got it anyway.

Pretty good.  It would've been nice to sit down and enjoy it (since it came with a dipping sauce that I ended up bypassing).

    Overall, I give them a B.  Cute t-shirts too.

This place is delicious!  My current favorite downtown lunch spot.

The soy chorizo with brie and the green chile chicken are both incredible.  They also have sweet empanadas...I think I'll try one today.  Maybe pineapple cinnamon.

I dream about mmmpanadas. One of the best food trucks in Austin. I absolutely recommend the soy chorizo and brie.. it's amazing! I've tried the mango dessert mmmpanada... a little against my liking, but I didn't really know what to expect. Anyway, 5 stars! The staff is friendly and the food is amazing.

Yum! I hadn't had an empanada since I lived in H-town years ago. In Houston, Marini's has been around for years. These guys make an empanada that definitely compares favorably to Marini's. Their truck showed up at work today during lunchtime.

I had the black bean and a green chile chicken. Both were great! Unlike some of the other reviewers, I found the crust to be perfect. I like the green chile chicken better, but the black bean wasn't bad at all. They both were spicy, which I like.

Only reason they don't get 5 stars is the selection. Marini's must have 30 varieties. These guys have about 10. Of course, that might have something to do w/ the fact they're serving theirs our of a truck while Marini's is a brick & mortar restaurant. No matter, mmmpanadas is great, and dine with them again in the future.

No, it is not worth all 6 stars everyone has given it.  It is good, I have had better.  My empanadas were only luke warm - not even hot.  One of them is no where near enough for lunch.  Two of them and you are stretching it to call them a lunch.  With a drink?  I think you are up in the $7 range for a snack.

I think I just figured it out - the secret - go here for a snack but not for lunch.  It ain't that great people.

This place was great!  I was new to town and rolled by on my bike one day, but the smell of empanadas pulled me in.  I got three - two savory, plus a sweet one for later - and all were great.  The soy chorizo sausage was tasty - my only complaint is that it didn't have a lot going on beside the convincing fake meat and spicy sauce, could maybe use a veggie or two for texture (or olives? hot peppers?) - and the spinach one with goat cheese and pine nuts was divine.  I saved the peach cobbler for later that day and, frankly, of the three I tried that was the best.

My only (probably unfair) complaint is the cost.  This is a general issue I have with the price of empanadas at most non-traditional bakeries in this country.  $3.50, seriously??  But if you're in the mood and willing to fork over, it'll definitely hit the spot.

Yummalicious! Looking for this last time when I was here for SXSW and I'm in love with the ones I tried: The Argentinean, BBQ Chopped Beef and the Asparagus Prosciutto! So it wasn't a snack for me but a friggin meal after a night of drunkeness! The oasis on the walk back to the hotel!

In SF we have venga! empanadas which is great too, but there's something about the flavors when asparagus, prosciutto and blue cheese co-mingle. Or the surprise at the taste of the combination of ground beef, olives, and hard-boiled egg with the Argentinean dipped in chipotle mayo! The beef? Well, I did have to have bbq at every chance especially when in Texas!

Ok so lets just say one empanada turned into two which turned into three.. WE COULD NOT WALK AWAY. The Spinach Mushroom had just the right amount of ingredients plus it had pine nuts..  The Green Chile Chicken was delectable with the right amount of spiciness. These little pockets o' love pair with the lemon garlic aioli perfectly like ricky williams and marijuana. I was totally sober when trying this place out too.. i wonder how out of this fuckin world it'll taste when i'm buzzin hard from a night of inebriation.

So I ride over to Whip In for a quick dinner and Lo! the Mmmpanadas truck is parked in their lot. The guy in the truck who said that the green chile chicken was spicy is clearly a pansy little sissy girl; delicious yes, spicy no. The pineapple cinnamon was great; nice light dinner for $7.

Let's be frank. These sorts of food carts/trucks/kiosks are seldom sought out specifically for their own purpose, and almost always stumbled onto a few drinks in on empty stomachs. For that purpose - it simply can't be beat considering the amount of bad-to-mediocre pizza that exists out there in the streets of downtown Austin. They have variety (more than 1 veg choice), run-on-par with pizza slice costs, and are a welcome reprieve to the thirst-quenched but hungry midnight wanderer. My personal fave is the Spicy Black Bean empanada with the chipotle mayo. A savory (and truly spicy) treat.

    Vegetarian Friendly: 5/5

I stumbled across this little truck while working at SXSW this year. I was intrigued (and very hungry) but had to run off to get to my next venue. I stopped by the next day and had a breakfast empanada. It was flaky, not too greasy and very delicious! I was surprised at how big it was. Not big enough for a meal, but a very decent snack to fill you up for a few hours. The guys were super nice (unlike people at other stands) and I got a freshly made empanada in about two minutes. This place certainly lives up to the "mmm" in  it's name. I'll definitely hit this place up when I'm downtown and craving something filling but not huge.
