I have a new favorite.  The location is super unassuming in this strip mall style location.  My boyfriend and I passed it several times heading to over places.  But, I was finally told by a friend that it's the place to go... We went with some friends and ordered 5 rolls to share.  The service was super quick and very friendly.
We had the Catapilla, East Side roll (Unagi and Spicy tuna), Philly Roll, Mango (something) roll, and the the Scamon roll.  We were happy with everything and I usually don't like Philly rolls.  Since, most restaurants overdue the cream cheese.  But, Miyako does more fish than cream cheese in their version!

Big Extra- They serve Orion beer.  Which you can only find at some of the more authentic Japanese restaurants.

This is going to be our new go to!

We were in Capitola Mall and hungry for dinner, so I checked Yelp*.  I found Miyako and liked what I saw in the reviews.  It's literally across the street (41st Ave).

The service was great.  We had our four year old with us.  You could tell our server had kid(s) of her own.  She keyed in to all those special touches that make the dining as fun for a kid as the adults.

The food was very good.  The price was very reasonable.

All in all, they exceeded our expectations.  I'd definitely dine here again.

This is our favorite sushi joint in Santa Cruz.  Great, cozy atmosphere, friendly servers, and great sushi.  We have never been for the lunch buffet so we can only speak to dinner.

Our faves include the Hawaiian Roll, Boston Roll, and Super Cal.  The Maguro Nigiri melts in your mouth.  We also love Naka Sushi, but Miyako definitely has 3x as many options for sushi rolls.

And who can beat $1 large Sake for the month of December?!  And it's delicious Sake...really great flavor.

I can't even trust yelp when it comes to restaurants near Santa Cruz. Four stars for this place? Are you kidding me?! Do you even know what good Japanese food is? Even Japanese restaurants in San Francisco completely stomps on this place and all the other "Japanese restaurants" here in Santa Cruz.

I'm just going to lay it all out. I ordered the Rainbow Roll and the Bento Box: Chicken Terriyaki and Saba. This was for dinner.

    Pros:
-Open 30 minutes later than the other Japanese restaurants around this area (the only reason why I ended up going here)
-Service was good but I'd expect that since I was 1 out of 2 tables they had to serve
-I'm not a fan of Kimchi but apparently it's homemade and fresh (wait... why is there even kimchi served in the bento box at a Japanese restaurants?)
-I'm not a huge fan of nuts but it's kinda cool that there were little bits of nuts in my Rainbow Roll sushi
-The miso soup actually had a decent amount of seaweed and tofu (probably because we were pretty much the last people to be served..)

    Cons:
-Man, I already knew I was going to drop almost $35 here just for a bento box and a specialty roll) and if it hadn't been for that togo's sandwich I ate an hour before coming here, I'd probably leave hungry
-The saba tasted SUPER fishy which means that it was re-cooked/microwaved.  How can my bento box come out in like 5 minutes if you need to grill my fish AND my chicken?
    -Disappointed in the sushi selection.

Yeah, I'm aware that my pro list IS longer than my cons but I just feel unsatisfied for what I paid for. People in the Santa Cruz area need to raise their standards for sushi.

Miyako is a nice neighborhood Japanese restaurant hidden in the back of a strip center.  The sushi/sashimi was fresh and tasty. Service was excellent.
For the price point, I would have expected somewhat larger slices of sashimi. Mobo Sushi has the edge there.

Yet all in all I will Return.

    NEW FAV!!!!

Now, its not going to replace my all time fav, but its up there for places to eat now.

Review Solely on the Lunch Buffet.

bf took me here said it was great.
Walked in, hostess asked if it was for the buffet or not, we said buffet, she said to pick any place. We did then got up to serve our selvs as she brought water and miso.

it kinda reminded me of a cafeteria and i was nervous...
I got 2 chicken teriyaki legs, steamed rice, tempura sweet potatoes (my fav!!! Glad they had so many slices!), salad, tuna roll, california roll (unfortunately my fav, philly roll wasnt out).

All in all it was pretty decent! I was full afterword and I inspected my sushi for freshness before eating. The avo had no brown! and the tuna was cold!

They had other options too but im a picky eater and i didnt know what anything else was. Plus pretty much what I got is what I would have ordered normally. They had 2 different kinds of noodles, 4 other types of rolls, including 2 veggi options, grilled teriyaki tofu, other tempura veggis, and then strange soups?? WHY OH WHYYYY couldnt they have a miso out!!! AHHHHH!!! I would live off miso if I could!!

There are  only downer is we were never check on, yes i know its a lunch buffet, but non lunch buffet-ers were getting water refills... not us... second is it would have been nice to have a tray, at first i loaded everything on one plate then went back for the smaller sushi plate/ dipping place because i dont have 3 hands.

21.95 for 2 people ( we didnt have drinks, just water).
I'll be back for the buffet again, not sure if I'd go for a regular meal, Ill have to check their menu/prices/quality.

I thought this place would be great because of the reviews here on Yelp. Could not have been more wrong.

People rave about the freshness of the fish here... It was not fresh at all; there was a buffet; and everything was overpriced for the location, ambiance and service. I felt like I was being ripped off as I handed the waitress her tip. What a horrible place to work...

The buffet is okay, but don't expect any good or traditional Japanese food; soggy tempura, one bowl of miso soup, fake crab rolls, crummy rolls in general, chincy Kimche that 1. isnt even japanese and 2. is clearly just cabbage and spice powder with some saltwater and vinegar..., poorly made japanese pickles and no real noodles.

I wouldn't come back here again to save my life. It's a rip and the food tastes like crap.

Better luck at the sushi place inside of Whole Foods.

I love the cute decor and shaded windows Miyako offers. There's nothing to distract you from your delicious meal and it almost forces you to relax!
I got a dinner bento box with a California roll and chicken katsu. Pretty common things that can't really be messed up. Both the sushi and chicken were moist, which is really important to me. There's nothing worse than dry, impossible to chew sushi rice. They have great portions for the price you pay. I was left with tons to take home. Overall, a great experience here!

First of all, the taste of fish is very good here,
I'm not kidding, I never taste this freshness before in anywhere else.

Sashimi menus are very likely recommended,
since you can fully, fully taste the real fish here.
Seriously, I was almost about to drop a tear for it. my goddess!

Other menus I tried was sushi rolls,
Blood mery is awesome. And also the udon !!!
You must try the udon here!!!

Everything in here is very fresh and delicious,
I can't wait to visit here again soon :)

Best sushi on the East Side of Santa Cruz. Very friendly atmosphere, fresh sushi and a fantastic all you can eat lunch buffet. Also very accommodating for food allergies. The Bento Box is my favorite, but all their rolls are tasty. They always have Sumo Wrestling and a travel show playing on the TV's as well. Not the best sushi in town, those are found downtown. But this place has everything right where it matters. Tasty food, great atmosphere and great service.

I thought the food was pretty good, but it is definitely not the best Japanese restaurant I've ever been to, nor is it in my top favorites.  The sushi was pretty good, but I didn't care for the miso soup. The thing I did like about this place was that the workers were really nice. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here. I would go back if I was really hungry and no other sushi places were open.

This is my favorite Sushi restaurant in santa cruz!  The fish is always amazingly fresh.  The service is always great even when they are busy.  The owner and the sushi chefs always say hello and thank you when you leave.  The dragon roll is out of control!  And don't leave without getting the spicy green lip mussels appetizer, it's amazing.  The ambiance is great, nice and quiet unless it's super busy.  It's a nice small sushi restaurant with the best sushi rolls in SC for sure. Nothing crazy on the rolls menu, but every one is delicious. The best part is the price!  You can get totally stuffed here for pretty cheap. Oh yeah and I love that the TVs always play Sumo wrestling!  I hope I find a sushi place in my new town as good as this.

Yum yum yum. I loved this place from the first bite I took. I have traveled extensively in Japan and this is the most authentic and delicious Japanese restaurant in Santa Cruz. They have a few things going for them: An affordable lunch buffet, really great staff, and flavors straight from Japan.

    $10 Lunch Buffet ftw.

What separates this place from other japanese buffet eateries (other than the phenomenal price) is that this place does not focus solely on sushi. Since I am allergic to fish, I am limited to rice dishes, california rolls, and tempura - which this place had in the buffet!

They had teriyaki chicken wings, sliced beef, gyoza, steamed white rice, veggie tempura... thinking about it just makes me hungry. They had unlimited salad with the typical Japanese salad dressing which was exceptionally good, so good that I dipped my california roll in it. My friend that I went with seemed satisfied with the other rolls that they had to offer. They staff was attentive and did fill up the buffet with freshly cooked food every 15 minutes or so.

I honestly went up from my seat and filled up my plate three times. I'm not sure that was a good thing because my stomach did expand and I've had a bigger appetite for the next few days.

Miyako is "Alright" at best, but I've definitely had better experiences and better food elsewhere. Came here for the lunch buffet after my friends saw so many reviews on yelp for it. $10 is pretty cheap for a lunch buffet, let alone a sushi buffet.

Once you enter, you see that the furniture is dated and the decoration isn't very tasteful. It gave me a bad feeling about the place especially since I'm a picky eater.

There was a buffet bar sitting against a wall at the corner of the restaurant and you bus yourself, AKA, you get your own chopsticks, plates, napkins, and put your dishes away once your done with them. There isn't really a clear place to put your dishes.

The food was, well, buffet food, but not the best quality. The food lacked taste and substance. The amount of food they placed on the buffet was very little and the variety was very lackluster. There were potstickers, rice, chicken wings, sushi, salad, and noodles. Once sushi came out from the kitchen people would swarm over to the buffet to get a new type. They should have had more sushi out!

I feel misled by all the good reviews for this place. I don't see the charm or the value in coming here, at least for the lunch buffet. Dinner could be a different story, but I don't know if I'm willing to come here and try the dinner.

I guess this place is OK for Santa Cruz, but it's not OK for me!

First let me say to all you kooks from the valley that expect to be fed like Romans for ten dollars, just stay home in San Jose and enjoy one of your many fine chains. The Cheesecake factory maybe.  Miyako is a great sushi place with an affordable buffet and plenty of options to sushi for such a little place. The sushi is what we go there for and it is of the highest quality. We have eaten here for years and never had to send a piece back. The staff is really friendly, super personable and they provide great service. Miyako of the many good sushi places in Santa Cruz is always our first choice.

I moved away from the area but popped back in  at Miyako because of my great memories here.  The food has declined.  The salad was wet so the dressing didn't stick to the lettuce.  They forgot the mango in my mango roll.

    :(

Why do all the good things have to die? So sad, I will not go back if this is what they've turned into.

2 1/2 stars. I was going to give it a 3, but I thought about it and man, people should get better taste buds! Found out about this place through yelp and I was really curious to try it! $10 for all you can eat sushi? Sounds like a deal!

I went here for lunch today with my friends and the look of the restaurant did not look so bad. It was pretty decent inside. They had two cart-like things of food. Sad thing is, there was not THAT much sushi rolls! Disappointment. It makes sense though because unlimited sushi would be costly and the price IS only $10 bucks.

There were chicken wings, pot stickers, tempura (not the shrimp kind, only yams, onion and asparagus), california rolls, tuna rolls...etc. I was really eager to eat unagi and sad they did not have that as part of their selection of rolls. I think all I mainly ate were the tuna rolls. The bad thing about this place is that they put 6 rolls of each kind on one tray. I always had to wait for them to bring out more and ate all 6 of whatever they brought out. I thought it was really random for them to be serving noodles that looked like pancit as part of their Japanese style dishes.

Apparently, we had to change dishes every time we wanted to eat more. They should probably make a sign about that since they had to notify everyone that was about to eat more using their old plate.

Overall, I think if you ate here for dinner, the place would be rated a 3. Considering this was for lunch and it is Santa Cruz, 2 1/2 stars sounds right to me.

Everything in our experience showed that Miyako is one of the best sushi restaurants in the county. Incredibly fresh fish, gleaming with health--and very good service. We chose to sit at the bar, and watched the three chefs work quietly and efficiently.

Our Special Sashimi was dazzingly good. Ditto the Rainbow Roll: my favorite construction of a Rainbow Roll ever. (Macadamia nuts, anyone?)

The waitress's suggestion for a saké was perfect. (It's the one in the keepsake bottle, but I forget its name.)

See my photos of the beautiful presentation. Can't wait to try the lunch buffet. Also? It was more than half-full on an early Monday night. Looks like a lot of loyal customers.

Miyako is modest in size but delivers big.  We were there July 4th weekend 2010 and found excellent fresh fish, pleasant service, and swift sushi delivery with three sushi chefs hard at work.  We liked the Castroville roll with artichoke hearts in it; very inventive.

The restaurant is tidy and clean too. We thought it was a pleasant experience and would recommend it highly.

Well I heard great things about this place, and was very disspointed in there lunch buffet, there is a sad selection of food..Chicken wings!!?, Potstickers, rice, noodles, salad, some kind of beef stew and all you can eat sweet potatoe sushi?! California rolls BLAH! and Tekka Maki..(the highlight)  There miso soup is also very watered down, and has next to no tofu in it.
I also had there lunch special to go, which was a bento box with a small piece of teriyaki salmon which was delicious however for $15 dollars I was dissapointed in portion size, as well as the quality of there sushi..

LOVED the sushi here. I usually go to I Love Sushi on Front St, but I stopped going because it was so expensive. Miyako, on the other hand, doesn't leave my wallet with a hole in it.

I ordered two rolls: the Boston Roll and the Tempura Sake Roll. Both were DELICIOUS. The Boston Roll was a simple cucumber roll, but with scallops on top in a spicy creamy sauce. The Tempura Sake Roll had cucumber, avocado, and tempura shrimp inside with salmon on top. I also asked for lemon slices on top of that roll and it was the icing on the cake! The wait for the food wasn't even that long.

I've only been here once, but the food I had was really really good. The Only reason why I gave it 4 stars is because there was only one waiter, and it took him a while to get to us throughout our meal. But there again, it was about a half hour till closing time.

Miyako's is the reason my fiance and I like sushi and this review is long overdue.  It has been a couple years since our first experience.  We have been back on several occasions and have been impressed every time!

I have always tried to like sushi but could never get over the taste of the seaweed. So...I tried soy wraps and that worked but was so hard to find at many restaurants. Miyako's is the first sushi place where I got past the seaweed and enjoyed the other flavors. I think I could never do that before because I was going to crappy sushi places.

They have a HUGE menu and are willing to make custom rolls as well (macadamia nuts FTW).

The staff is great. Our waitress was patient and made excellent recommendations.

There is usually live music on weeknights (have seen a couple jazz groups) and the place is always packed.

Miyako's is awesome for everyone--from a first time sushi eater to a seasoned veteran.  Definitely give them a try!!!

Discovered another reason I love Miyako. Their Sukiyaki is full of veggies and noodles, and is PERFECT for these cold December nights. The beef option is also made with kobe beef (did you know kobe beef means the cows are fed beer and then given sensual massages? Crazy!).  Oh, and did I mention they have a special for $1 house saki (large OR small) for the whole month of December???? Well they do. Bargain!

Oh Sweet baby Jesus.  This place was great. We went there for the lunch special, because some people submitted it to the santa cruz specials site. Anywho, i'm glad they did. I finally made it there, ten bucks for the buffet.  Awesome. All kinds of neat rolls, no nigiri, but it was available by order. Wasn't in the buffet which is fine :)
There was all kinds of other things in the buffet too, it came with miso soup, but there must have been 12 side dish items, gyoza, seaweed salad, etc.  And about 8-10 rolls available.  I was really blown away by this place, inside is SO different from the outside. outside is just windows, some neon signs, but inside, they've done a great job of making it a nice looking little sushi place. I love it and will go back, an excellent deal, I was still satisfied for hours to come.

MIyako is THE BEST sushi place in Santa Cruz.  No, I take that back...Miyako is the best sushi place EVER.  I love sushi and I've eaten at so many sushi restaurants in the Bay Area!  I visit Santa Cruz TO eat at Miyako's.  But hands down, in Santa Cruz...Miyako is better than Sushi Totoro and I Love Sushi combined!

My favorite is the Mango Mania.  Mango and macadamia nuts in sushi?! Genius! Seriously, it's a luau in your mouth! Whenever I go, I always order that, the Boston Roll, the Lion King and their Tempura.  The last time I visited I also tried the East Side Roll (tuna), The Bay Roll (scallops), and Sake Tempura Roll (salmon).  Miyako NEVER disappoints!  The fish is super fresh.  AAAH It is SO good!  End your meal with their Green Tea Tempura Ice Cream (deep fried ice cream).  It sounds weird but is a very interesting dessert!

Their bigger rolls go from $10-$13 and worth every penny!  Don't be shy, try everything!  Great service too!   Not open Saturdays for lunch or all day Sunday =[

My friend and I came here because August Moon Sushi Cafe was closed.

Now granted, we came here deeply disappointed, it was a very pleasant experience.

By the time we got there, it was pretty empty (oh, us late dinner eaters). We were seated and served rather promptly. Our server was friendly and animated, not afraid to make conversation.

The food was very good. I can't remember what we ordered, but I do remember one of the rolls tasting like there was corn in it, even though there wasn't any. It wasn't bad, it was just weird. But my friend, as well as the server, thought I was insane because they had no clue what I was talking about (me and my crazy taste buds). We all had a good laugh.

Definitely a bit pricier, but worth it. I wouldn't mind driving a little further for this place.

Mmmmm, best sushi ever.  Out of all the sushi restaurants I've tried, this one is by far my favorite.  They have great rolls, generously sized, and the prices are quite reasonable.  Their lunch buffet is a super deal too.

Last year when I came up to Santa Cruz on a regular basis I'd eat here at least once a week.

I've always found the staff to be very friendly, and they're more than happy to work with you on customizing your roll.

My single complaint is that on busy evenings it can take a super long time to get your food, but if you're willing to be patient, it's worth it!

This is a great, solid sushi bar and Japanese restaurant. Their weekday buffet is terrific with lots of veggies (soy-sprout salad - yum!), good sushi maki, tempura, and more.

And they are the sweetest people! They were open New Year's 2008 and they gave out gen-mai tea as a gift to their customers (as well as a free edamame).

The prices are very good for this area and the quality is good. I stick with the basics, but their fancy rolls look very pretty going by.

My observation has been that no restaurant genre is more susceptible to personal taste and individual expectation than Japanese Restaurants. Santa Cruz County, for a county of it's size, has more than its fair share of Japanese Restaurants.  Ask ten people what their favorite Japanese Restaurant is in Santa Cruz and you'll probably get ten different answers -- my favorite is Miyako. It's a true gem and offers a great Japanese lunch. The staff is fast, attentive, and really friendly.

I agree with the reviewer that said, "Don't be scared that it's in a strip mall" (Steph N). I'll take that a step further and explain that it's sandwiched between a pediatricians office and a dry cleaners.
Let your inhibitions go on this one, join the young, working Capitoleans who pack the place for Miyako's buffet lunch, or grab a bento like I do. Their food is great. Their sashimi is the most fresh I've had in SC county.Their prices are reasonable.  I hope you like it, too.

MMMMM. So friggin' good.  Don't be scared that it's in a strip mall.  It's part of it's quirky allure.

This place rocks it pretty good.  The gents slicing up the fish are the three mildest mannered sushi chefs I think I've ever experienced, not to say they're not fun - they are, just kinda mello style.  I always sit barside and watch sumo and listen and read the GT Weekly - oh, and stuff my face with delicious sushi. and a couple of ice cold Sapparo's.

Yum-yum, gimme some.  Good stuff folks.  Check it out.

I forgot how AMAZING Miyako's is....until this weekend.

Was in SC for graduations, and came here for dinner with 3 friends. We ordered a Boston roll, Philly Roll, Mango Mania (my favorite!!), Unagi #1 Special Roll, Shrimp Tempura Roll, and a Lion King. Bill= $52 without tip.  Most of the rolls (other than the Unagi #1 and Lion King) were in the $6-7 range.

The owner recognized us and gave us a salmon collarbone dish on the house which was SOOO good.

Really amazing food for a really great price.

Miyakos never disappoints!  They bring sushi to a whole new level with their vegetarian sushi selection... but their regular sushi rolls are AMAZING!!  not too much rice on the rolls and ingredients were fresh. BEST in the Santa Cruz area!!! no doubt!
    TRY:
    Mango Mania
    Delavega roll ( sp?)
    41st
the roll with deep fried yams was DELICIOUS ( vegetarian roll)

If this is the best sushi in the area, then it doesn't bode well for the rest of the sushi places in Aptos.

I usually order the California Roll to gauge how good a sushi place is. Their Cal Roll was mediocre at best.  I think I've gotten better Cali Rolls from Safeway.  We also ordered the Lion King which is salmon and cream cheese baked on a Cali Roll.  Since the Cali Roll was already bad, adding salmon and cream cheese just seemed to make a bad situation worse.

We also decided to get the Bento Box with Saba Shioyake (Broiled Mackarel).  As another Yelper mentioned, the portions were small and the saba wasn't cooked very well.  For $13.95, I thought that we were getting a good deal since this was a 2 item bento box.  After we ate it, we felt really cheated.  They had this cabbage thing which was gross.  The salad dressing was really watered down and we left really hungry.

Service was okay.  They came, took our order, gave us our food and came back with the check.  No one came to check on us and it wasn't like the restaurant was packed.  Our Lion King Roll took forever to arrive.  We were almost to the point of canceling it since we were done with our roll and bento box.

I really wanted to like Miyako's, but they made it very hard to.
