Mark and Tony are fantastic!

My cousin went here. He recommended it to my other cousin. This cousin recommended it to me. I recommended it to my sister. She recommended it to my mom. My mom recommended it to my aunt.

Really, I have been coming here for about a year and a half, every four weeks. on the dot. Mark and Tony are extremely friendly and great at what they do. They really know how to handle my plasticy asian-textured hair -- they explained to me why my forsaken hair texture can't pull off so many styles *sob*. They found a style that suits me, and although they are pricey for my budget, I really like to go here... The only pampering I get! I just come in, sit down, and they know what to do.

Even though my hair can't pull off many styles... I trust them enough to tell them to do whatever they want to my hair, they're just so awesome.

Realy nice place and I like the people that work there.
I just got my hair cut here and could not be happier.  I  am glad they were not pushing me to purchase anything AT ALL. so I bought shampoo and conditioner anyway because I liked the way my hair felt after they washed it & my hair hasn't felt this soft in a long time.
For the first time in my life, i feel like i have found my salon! AND the prices are great for a fabulous experience.

I got a hair cut by Tony today. Chopped off 2 inches. Paid 50$ without tip.
The salon itself is small but clean which I like very much and there is plenty of parking over there. (the area is kinda dead).

I like my hair cut overall it's decent since I didn't want to drive to SF to my usual place for a hair cut (will go when I am due for my japanese hair straightening). The layers are not too small and I am happy that he didn't thin out my hair which would make me look like a big mushroom.

Big layers and cute bangs (that doesn't scream I am asian).

I think I will definitely go back if I am in need of a decent hair cut...!

So I went to Mitri's at the advice of fellow yelpers and was not disapointed. My 12 year daughter had developed a softball sized mass of knotted up hair and it needed help. Dana worked on the mass for 1-1/2 hours to be able to save most of her hair and give her a nice hair cut. Tony was funny and kept telling her she needs to brush her hair (she does not like to).
After almost 2 hours I was only charged $50. I made sure to include a large tip cause Dana sure deserved it. We will both be back for our hair needs!

Based on the great reviews that I saw here, I setup an appointment and was with Mark.

I made it very clear, in no uncertain terms, that I do not like short hair. And that's exactly what he gave me. He showed me a pic and took my approval before proceeding with the changed hairstyle, but did not tell me that it will result in SHORT hair - something that I didn't want. And for that, I wish I could give a rating in negative.

I hate myself for going there, and have a long wait before I can go to someone else and get the hairstyle changed to something else.

Apart from this, the place is relatively clean. But that's about it. Listening to the client is not one of their strong areas, I would say.

Am I going there again? Never!

I went in to have high and lowlights one evening. The next morning I looked at my hair more closely  and it was brass orange. Do not get your hair colored with Mark.

Realizing that my A-line cut was growing out ridiculously funky, I decided it was time to do something about it. I normally go to Baliza, which I LOVE, but that wasn't going to be too convenient for me this particular day. So i tried something new.

I now live by these words: "Never cheat on your hair dresser".

I should have waited and gone to Mindy at Baliza instead of Mark from Mitri. Mark is nice, handsome, and his salon is super cute, but my haircut was definitely nowhere near cute. I specifically told him that I wanted long bangs and more oomph. What I got was extremely short bangs and so many short choppy layers. He made sure to get in "your bangs will look great in 2 weeks". WTF not now?! great.

I normally walk out of the salon with extra shiny and healthy hair, but I do not know how I ended up leaving here with my hair more dry and damaged. To make it worse, he styled my hair like it was 1960. I didn't want to be rude, but i had to.... i asked for the straightener and fixed it. well, tried to, anyway.

It wasn't so bad, though. Just bad. And expensive. He said to me "Just give me $45". ?!?! Whatever.

Sara is amazing. I went to see her a couple of weeks ago, with overgrown roots and such, and expected to pay for at least partial highlights. Instead, she simply touched up my base color so it wasn't stark black and was more of a natural gradient into my existing highlights, which made all the difference yet cost half as much as what I was expecting. She also made suggestions for what we could do at the next appointment, but assured me that whether I called her next week or next month, my hair would grow out fine.

This tells me that she's genuinely interested in looking out for me and my hair, and not just making a bigger sale (because admittedly, I would have paid for new highlights if I'd been convinced enough). As a colorist and a person, she's definitely a keeper!

Today I called in at 12pm for an appointment and got one at 3pm with a stylist called Sarah.

I was a bit hesitant at first because I never seen her there before, but she gave me an awesome haircut.  Her hair wash was very gentle and I just asked for a fohawk cut and I came out very satisfied.

Right before I went in today, I saw a girl come out with attractive hair with a huge smile.  It's been 2 years since my first visit already.  I'm still happy with Mitri hair studio.

It has been a while since I went last time because I cut my own hair and friends hair, too. I went here before my interview and asked for a professional looking, yet fashionable cut. Mark did a great job making it clean, professional and yet fashionable style with short layers.

If I need a good hair cut again I will come by.

I am definitely going to return in about a month for another hair cut.  I had my hair cut at the beginning of February and I'm still getting compliments on it!  I got a compliment last week from a customer of my family's restaurant.  And then again this week from an employee at work.  I'm amazed it's still that stunning to be complimented on!

Tony has a good memory.  I had told him about my family's new restaurant and how he should visit some time.  He came in this past weekend and I hadn't even noticed.  I thought he looked familiar, but I couldn't pin point from where I knew him.  Later on my relatives told me that Mark & Tony had come in because I had told them!  I'm embarrassed I hadn't noticed, but thankful that they went out of their way to try out our restaurant.

Great guys.  They're very humble and friendly.  I can't wait to return for my next hair cut!

I came back to see Sara again once again, I am so glad I found her!!

She is such a sweetheart and will listen to what you want. Have you ever had one of those stylists who just "gets it" ? Everyone's hair and style is different but Sara is able to see that and work with you on incorporating what you want and what works.

She was also sweet enough to trim the bottom of my bob just a tad, free of charge.

Prices here are moderate and affordable, especially for recessionista's like me!

Mark is my HOMIE. I've been loyal to him ever since my first haircut here. I used to pay 75 dollars at W's (I know, for a men's haircut, pretty exorbitant) but mark only charges me 32 for a completely comparable, if not better haircut.

Mark takes his TIME, at least for me. My haircuts take an hour here at least, which is a long time for just short hair. He uses various razors and has a really awesome technique. I think the best part is, I really don't have to explain anything to him. Mark completely understands what you desire, and what will work best for you. I used to be a control freak when it came to my hair, as I whored myself around to all these different trendy places trying to get my hair the way I wanted. Finally now, I can actually have a relaxing haircut experience without worrying. (My hair has been butchered plenty of times in the past, so it was a big fear trying another new place)

I've since had my sister and her boyfriend, my girlfriend, and her brother all come here for haircuts. Since then they've become Mark loyal clients. Despite the low prices, all the service here is comparable to places that charge twice as much. The place might be small, but the decor is nice, and I love the close friendly vibe. It is the complete opposite of pretentious, which quite frankly I get really annoyed having to deal with that when you go those other super trendy places.

You better book a week in advance, Mark fills up QUICK. And tell him James sent you :D

SARA is the BEST!

I've been going to Mitri since she started working there. I don't let anyone cut my hair except that one time she was on vacation. BIG MISTAKE and lesson learned.

Not only is Sara good at what she does but she's very pleasant to talk to. It's true what they say... hair dressers do know a lot of secrets :)

it's been a while since i've walked out of  a shop happy with my hair cut.
i didn't really care much about hair styles before, but  i wanted a slight change so i found Mitri on yelp, i was able to schedule an appointment with Mark about a day before. i let Mark knew what i wanted and he quickly went to work and Mark delivered! He also let me knew what he fixed to achieve the look i wanted. what i liked about the place is that from the cute staff to the stylist everyone was helpful and friendly yet chill. i would definitely go back to Mitri for my next cut.

Mark is a hair god. In the months leading up to my wedding I only trusted him to cut and color my hair. The prices for a cut at Mitri are very reasonable ($45-ish), but me, being cheap as I am, opted to go to a less expensive salon after the wedding. After a really hideous haircut (where I learned the cutter took too much off one side and then had to even it out and it still wasn't quite right afterwards) I decided that I'd splurge and spend the extra $10 (I know - $10 that's all it was at most!) and go to Mitri in the future. Plus, he styles it really well. Most salons I can't wait to wash it and style it myself because they've done a piss poor job.

My haircuts here are always flawless. Mark isn't the overly effusive haircutting type that will get to know your life story, but he gives a damn good cut.

I love Mark and Tony.  I've been going in to them for about 2 years now and they've each cut my hair twice I think.  Every time I tell them exactly what I want and they have not just delivered, but they've exceed my expectations.

The place is small but nicely organized and decorated.  High marks for cleanliness too!  Oh, and Mark and Tony are SO NICE!

I have long, thick, semi-curly hair and it's always been a struggle to get a cut that works with the hair, no matter how I choose to style it.  After getting cheaper $10-$25 haircuts my whole life... oh, I will never go back to that!  My hair has never looked better!  When I choose to wear it curly, the way that Mark and Tony cut it totally accentuates the curls, and it's just a wall of curly hair from the back.  Yay!

The $45 or so (plus tip) is totally worth it.  Parking can be a pain sometimes (it's hit or miss), so make sure you allow a few extra minutes before your appointment in case you have to park in the street and walk.

Despite the good reviews on Yelp and the recommendations I got from my friend, I was quite disappointed with the haircut I got here. Tony cut my hair; I was told that he's really good at seeing what style fits best with your hair texture and face. I told him to give me a suggestion, and he suggested the exact same hair I already had: long layers with slight side bangs. So I basically paid $50 ($60 with tip) to have him cut off my split ends.

I also happened to be going to a job interview right after my appointment. So I told him to style my hair. He used a curling iron and curled my entire head. I looked like a lion with loose curls! I thought that it would've been a nice style for a beauty pageant, but not for a job interview. I'm sorry to say that I went home and washed out the curls, and felt less like I was auditioning for America's Next Top Model.

They seem like really nice guys, and they appear to be knowledgable about hair and hair cutting methods. (When I made a suggestion to have short instead of long layers, Tony said that the texture of my hair wasn't ideal for short layers cuz it would make it look poofy.) But I don't ever want to pay someone $60 just to cut off my split ends again! You guys better impress me next time!

Tony was nice, he didn't make small talk, which was great.  The color I got was very pretty. The hair cut though, was one of the worst I have ever gotten.  I don' t think he knows how to work with curly hair. It had ugly layers.  It only looked good straight, which pissed me off.  But the worst thing was how he styled it. I told him I wanted it straight, and he have me the freakin Rachel, yes the 1996 Rachel, I didn't have the heart to tell him I hated it. It truly looked ridiculous!  I'll never go there again.

I made an appointment with Mark and visited Mitri for the first time today. In the process of cutting my hair, Mark used all sorts of tools I had never see before but all worked great! My hair has texture and life like never before!

The space itself is clean with reddish-brown wood floors and large mirrors in front of each station. It was obvious Mark took pride in his work. I'm a guy with pretty simple hair and he still spent nearly an hour from start to finish. I'll definitely be back!

LOVE IT.

I don't think I will ever go anywhere else in the Bay Area for my hair cut and highlights. These guys are very detailed and professional. Mark knew exactly the right color highlights for my skin tone. Although he is a bit rough with his hands, you will be satisfied with the results. They also do not push expensive product for you to buy like some other places. As a matter of fact, I was looking into buying some expensive product for my hair, but Mark suggested I got something else that was less work and inexpensive. Brilliant! I will be back for sure.

I had a horrible "perming" experience here. granted, I know perms went out with the 80's, but I thought the fellas here at Mitri would be able to give me a decent "body wave" like jessica alba's.  i thought wrong, i asked if they had large curlers, the guys promised me that they had large curlers, thus ensuring a big wavy perm. they were wrong and i think they were just trying to make a sale.

there were about 7 large curlers, and once they ran out of those, they reverted to using the same size curlers my mom's hair stylist uses to give my mom her typical chinese mom perm.

long story short, the perm didn't turn out so good and when i went back to get it fixed, they said to give it a few weeks. it never got better.

on the flip side, i do agree that they give wonderful men's cuts. with scissors too, no razors, pretty impressive.

I got a haircut with Tony today, and am very pleased with the results.  I went there with a messed up head -- I had been slacking off hardcore on getting a haircut.

I wanted to be surprised to an extent, so I asked Tony to suggest a hairstyle.  I was impressed when he confidently laid out a plan, and immediately started crafting it.

The cut came out great, and it's a much-welcomed change for me.

I plan on going back here for my next cut.

I came across this salon while dining out at Yuki Sushi, right next to Mitri's.  I decided to try this hair salon and let me tell you that Tony is fantastic.  I hadn't gotten a haircut in 6 mo.  It was fried from all the hair straightening I'd done.  He took great care in listening to what I wanted, helped to texture and layer my long hair and kept my bangs so that they could grow out.  My hair looked fabulous, just fell naturally.  The prices are great, $45, for a women's haircut and plus they're open until 9 p.m.  I'll definitely be coming back!

UPDATE 10/13/07
================================================== ====
I had my haircut in July and just this past Sat. and both times, I've just felt plain let down by the quality of the haircut and the service.  My haircut in July was just a trim and to get my bangs cut.  I usually show my stylist a picture of what I want b/c I've had those experiences where if you don't show your stylist what you want, then you'll end up with f%!d up haircut.  I think he just glazes over the picture, doesn't take the time to listen to what I want.  I just feel that there's no personal attention.  There should be!  After all, this is MY hair!  I have to live with the results!  So after my haircut in July, it just grew out to be this out-of- control mess.  My bangs were in such bad shape.  He could have cut in such a way where when it grew out, it wouldn't look so fobby.

Now this past Sat., I got my haircut again.  EgoMechanix and Rage were all booked up until next month and I just couldn't wait so I went back to Mitri and well, let's just say I showed my stylist what I wanted and he didn't deliver.  I wanted to cut my long hair up to my shoulders with layers and have it thinned out since I have incredibly thick hair.  I didn't want my bangs cut and he proceeded to do so.  He didn't style it too much and so my haircut resembled that of my friend's Asian mom back in the 80s (think poofy bangs).  The cost was $50 instead of $45????  Huh?  I was just so disappointed and annoyed with the service and just wanted to get out of there as fast as possible!  Sorry Mitri but I won't be coming back anymore.

Master of style - Sir Tony knows how what to do with his scissors.

I was in desperate need of a quick cut as my hair was ridiculously long and I looked like a 80's glam rock god which is cool but not when my hair would constantly hinders my sight. In short, I was in need of a quick fix.

After calling around to try and slide in a last minute appointment, my girlfriend recommended Mitri. Tony was nice enough to accept me after hearing the sheer despair in my voice regarding my current hair status. Tony made miracles happen. He literally sat me down, went to work without even really asking me what I wanted and made me look like Sean Lennon with edge. Which is typically a good thing.

Mitri is a South Bay hair staple that people should check for. The prices are literally half of what you would come to expect from most upscale salons these days. Mitri is definitely a breath of fresh air!

Finally, I've found a new salon!

My partner and I have been looking around for an affordable, high-quality haircut for the past few months.  I haven't been satisfied with the last two places we tried, so  I seached Yelp and decided to give Mitri a try based on the reviews.

We called this morning and Mark was helpful in slotting us in as their first appointments today.  Botth Mark and Tony are great guys -- friendly and amazing with a pair of scissors!  I arrived at the salon with a 6 week mane of hair that I'm sure frightened Mark ... but he turned it into a fantastic style in no time.  His attention to detail and viewing the hairstyle from different angles was terrific.  I felt at ease in his chair and trusted him to give me a new look.

The cost was $28 for my cut and it was totally worth it -- these guys could easily charge much more.  We will definetly return in a few weeks.

One review commented on the ability of Mitri to style non-Asian hair for women ... well, I am not a woman.  However, speaking as a big white, caucasian guy ... I left Mitri with a terrific style!

Overrated. My hair got butchered last time by Mark. I had to go home and grab some scissors and trimmer to fix some bad sloppiness. He isn't very social, pulls your hair pretty hard and you get the feeling he's trying to do your hair fast so he can get onto the next victim. And this wasn't my first time to Mitris either.

Verdict: Try all the stylists to see who fits you best. I definitely prefer Tony.

I've followed Mark Nguyen through three salons and now he's opened his own with Tony.  Mark belongs in the Castro, but lucky for us he's planted himself in south bay.  He's got metro skills at suburban prices (under $40 for a long-haired girl cut, and you can get a coupon on his website).  He especially knows Asian hair.  I've recommended him to my cousin, my aunt, my mom, coworkers and friends - everyone loves him and goes back for more!

Update winter'08: I have to say, these guys are awesome at hair cuts and highlights, but they don't know the first thing about punky hair color. I still love them to death for cuts, but if I ever need a pro bleach-and-dye again I'll try somewehre else.

I went to Mitri's for the first time Friday with a friend who recommended the place.  I was very pleased with my haircut. I have mid back length hair and a lot of it.  but after Mark got through with it, it was so much lighter and had more movement.  All my friends love it...

Mark was super nice and definitely listened to what i wanted.

I used to always drive up to Belmont to get my hair cut at Michael's Hair Design, where I used to work. I still had some friends there, so I thought, hey. But seriously, it's too far to drive for a haircut, even if it is discounted, and let's face it, that place is kind of trashy.

So my ex and I set out to find a new place. He suggested this place and we went. I didn't care for his haircut, but mine turned out pretty good. Not too different from what I usually got at Michael's, just a bit more drastic (finally, someone listens!).

I decided to come back, and this time decided to go all out and even got my bangs cut. I never look good with bangs, but I always want them. Tony did a great job with my hair! Seriously, it is cute, trendy, and oddly/surprisingly/pleasantly low maintenance. I really love my bangs, for the first time in my life! I think that's worth getting excited about.

(see for yourself in my adorable new profile picture. yes yes, modesty is one of my many virtues)

Best Men's Hair Salon Value in San Jose.

Mark's style rocks, and he seriously used like four different pairs of scissors for my trim.

Get a clue, go to Mitri Hair Studio!

I love this place.  I have been there twice. Once for a new hair revamp and another time for a trim and color.

I haven't colored my hair before so I had Tony pick out the color and do everything for me including coming up with my hair revamp (the first time I came in).

At first, I thought the color was the same color as my old hair, but as it grew out it got lighter and now I love it!

I also love my haircut!  In fact, I need to go back for a trim.

Tony and Mark are really accommodating and lots of fun.  I even brought in my sisters and gave them the works too.  We all came out loving our haircuts, highlights and coloring.

I would recommend this place to anyone who needs a new look at good prices!

Supercuts... Not my style.  Hair Salons for women... I love looking at the ladies, but they just can't cut hair for men.  I attend San Jose State University and I have been searching for a good hair cut.  A fresh cut to feel confident in.  You know that hair style you have that makes the ladies turn their heads.  Mitri is place to go to.  It's difficult to find a hair stylist that can cut hair for the pimpin Asian Male.

To keep my story short, I made an appointment with Mark a week before.  I drove by the store in Santa Clara.  It's close by Valley Fair.  The shopping  vicinity is small.  You have a Japanese restaurant around the corner.

I entered Mitri and was greeted by Mark.  The salon has a warm atmosphere and they have a Bose system for the listening connoisseurs.  Mark is from San Jose, and he knows his shit.  He has been trained by one of the stylist companies in Texas.  This master showed me some different hair styles and we narrowed it down to what I was looking for.  Mark created a masterpiece.  I handed him $30 dollars for the hair cut.  I felt like a million bucks when I walked out of the store.  Thanks Mark!

In college I would shave my head since it was the easiest thing to do. Once I graduated and moved back to the Bay Area I asked my friends for stylist recommendations. Turns out they all went to the same one: Sarah!

One of them is so picky, he changes cars every 6 months but has been going to her for years.

Sarah has been cutting my hair for 8 years now and I am always happy with the results. I highly recommend her.

Its been 2 weeks since my hair cut so it's time to do a review. A great haircut will show its true style a few days post the day you got it cut.

Thus far, Mark did a wonderful job adding texture to my normal/thin hair. Mark, greeted me with a smile and made me feel comfortable right away. His techniques and edginess is something that you would find in SF and thank goodness he's in good ol' Santa Clara.

The salon is cozy and doesn't have that big salon attitude. Actually the hair designers are pretty sassy and seem to laugh a lot together. One thing I did notice during my wait, they ROCK with men's haircuts. All the men that came in and out had wonderful cuts. Guys, go here (making my husband go here and he's picky).

With that said, I will for sure go back to Mark . Mitri is a great find.

Thanks Yelpers
