11 reviews for Mitchell's Fish Market
The location is quite pleasant and the atmosphere is nice, but it is a little disconcerting because it is in the same vicinity as the Newport Aquarium...
Regardless, Mitchell's serves some of the best seafood in Cincinnati. I started out with a cup of the lobster bisque. It was very smooth and creamy and was topped off with just a hint of spiciness. For my entree, I had the cedar-plank salmon with balsamic vinegar and a vegetable medley (eggplant, asparagus, tomato, to name a few). The salmon was cooked beautifully, and the plating was so well done that I almost didn't want to eat the fish. The vegetables and the salmon went well together, but the vinegar was a little overwhelming and took away some of the flavor.
Overall, this restaurant is very good and I highly recommend it.
Pretty good fish. Plenty of options and mostly very fresh. We had better results with the simpler preparations--if you stick to broiled, salads, fish sandwiches you'll be OK. The more you test the menu the more you risk disappointment. Our experience was that the service was friendly fast and competent.
For a nice and simple fish dinner before a movie next door...that's the kind of occasion I think Mitchell's shines.
Went here after the aquarium...It was pretty good! Prices weren't bad, between $10 and $15....I wasn't in the mood for seafood (I don't eat much anyway) so I got lemon pepper chicken..It was yummy! The mashed potatoes are great! My fiance got blackened tilapia sandwich...It was good..mother in law got grilled mahi mahi and step father in law got sam adams fish n chips..they were all great meals! The clam chowder and lobster bisque were both good also! The service was good, very attentive. I recommend this place!
After my second visit to Mitchell's Fish Market, I'm pretty underwhelmed. Steep prices and uninspired dishes make me feel like I've been cheated. The service is fantastic and the ambiance is sophisticated without being stuffy (though the location is a little disconcerting, being next door to the Aquarium), yet I doubt this restaurant will be on my list of top seafood joints.
We tried the lump blue crab and spinach dip ($12.95) which was topped with sun-dried tomatoes and served with pita chips. Big chunks of crab meat were found throughout the creamy dip, which was so scrumptious we didn't leave even a tablespoon's worth in the dish. Shared between three people, this app was ample enough to stave off our appetites.
Though our appetizer was great, our entrees were just average. My lump crab cake and broiled shrimp plate was served with herbed corn and mashed potatoes ($22.95). The potatoes were mediocre and the corn tasted frozen. As for the main course, my crab cake did actually contain mostly crab meat instead of breading, yet the dish lacked flavor. My three seasoned boiled shrimp were well cooked (not too tough or dried out), but they too were not a stand-out item.
After sampling my family's meals, I discovered the hush puppies were on par with Long John's and that the blue crab and shrimp Alfredo was nothing stellar because the crab meat was disintegrated until it became unrecognizable from the sauce.
The food wasn't bad, as we all ate until we were stuffed; however, at these inflated prices I'll look elsewhere when dining for seafood (I'll try Oceanaire or McCormick and Schmick's). If you're looking for upscale dining at the Levee, go to Reserve. You'll spend the same amount and have far better culinary experience
Overall: 3 1/2 stars
Mitchell's Fish Market has some of the freshest fish in town. Sitting just outside of Newport on the Levee proper next to Barnes & Noble, Mitchell's has all kinds of seafood available to its patrons.
The big draw here is the fresh catch of the day. They prepare it in four ways, blackened, broiled, grilled, or Asian dependent on your mood. Be it perch, seabass, salmon; whatever the catch of the day is you can know that it'll be good.
My dad always loves to get scallops and the ones he got at Mitchell's were great. The meal is fresh and it's nice to have lighter fare every once in awhile.
I first heard of this restaurant when I was looking on google maps for local fish, meat, and ethnic markets. I stumbled upon what seemed to be a fish market in Newport. I was assuming they sold fish and I was wrong!
It's a restaurant and not a fish market so don't be deceived! I dined here the other night while looking for a place to eat in Newport and I realized that they were the same place. Their appetizers and entrees are both pretty pricey. The appetizers will run you around $10 and the entrees will be $15 or more.
They have two menus. One is a list of about 10 different types of fish that you can have prepared many different ways. The second menu is their signature dishes. I had a mixed plate of the scallops with an Asian preparation with a sweet ginger taste. On the side was blackened tilapia and cedar planked salmon. Everything was cooked to perfection except for the vegetables which were a little too crunchy for my tastes. Then for desert I had a slice of the key lime pie. It was good, but was very sweet.
Mitchell's is an excellent seafood restaurant located at the Levee. I have eaten inside and on the patio several times, always at dinner, and both the food quality and service are always superb. The servers are consistently helpful and attentive.
Try the Shang Hai preparation on one of the fresh catches; it's a ginger and soy based sauce with sticky rice, scallions and spinach. I also like the blackened salmon spinach salad as a lighter dinner choice and the Voodoo BBQ shrimp and portabella bruschetta as appetizers. The oysters on the half shell are excellent also.
For the non seafood lovers, there are a few chicken and steak options.
On a recent business trip to Cincinnati, I liked Mtchell's so much I went two days in a row!
I first went on a Saturday night. The place was PACKED, perhaps one of the most crowded restaurants I have been to in a while. Unfortunately, despite being told that I would be seated in 45 minutes to an hour, it took nearly an hour and a half to get a table. I know that times they give you are an estimate, but my experience has been that restaurants' estimates are sometimes worst case and often you get seated early. They should really review their software's ability to manage customer load during peak times.
However, once I got to my table things definitely improved. The decor is very much weathered, seaport fish market. I began with a seared tuna appetizer and seared was a generous term as there was little part of the edge of the fish that had been cooked. However, being a f an of sushi and sashimi, I was fine with this. The tuna slices were arranged over a mound of sushi rice with tasty soy-based glaze. However, I was disapointed that the dish was topped with thinly sliced cucumber. I absolutely loathe cucumber and unfortunately, I was able to taste this even after I removed it. If I were to get that dish again, I would ask them to hold the cucumber and I think it would be excellent.
My entree was the blackened rainbow trout. The blackened fish had an excellent cajun flavor. It was served over a bed of rice with jambalaya shrimp and andouille sauce. The tiny shrimp in the sauce really added to the dish, but the sauce flavor was a little thin and tomatoey for my taste.
I topped off the meal with a slice of key lime pie. It had a great flavor and was topped with whipped creme and nuts. The consistency was a little thicker and more firm than I personally like, but it did not take away from the excellent dessert.
I do want to note that before I left, my server brought me two cards for free appetizers because of my long wait to be seated. This was very impressive because I had not complained about the length of my wait. That to me says something about their attention to customer service!
On the second visit, I started with the Old Bay peel and eat shrimp. The shrimp are served over ice with remoulade and cocktail sauces. They provide a stainless steel bowl, appropriately dinged and distressed to fit the ambience, for discarding shrimp shell. Also, a warm towel is provided for cleaning the messy Old Bay seasoning you wind up having all over your hands. I was very impressed at just how many shrimp you got! That could have been an entree alone!
My entree was the Shang Hai sampler which included salmon, scallops and shrimp over spinach and rice with a ginger soy sauce. This was an EXCELLENT dish. The scallops were flavorful but not overpowering (I am not a big scallop fan so this impressed me) and the shrimp were perfectly cooked as was the salmon.
No dessert this time though. A nice touch was that my server from the previous night stopped by to talk and we compared the two dishes from both visits.
My business trip is over, but if I were going to be here another couple of days, I may well have found myself back at Mitchell's!
One note about their location. They are in Newport on the Levee which is a great collection of shops and entertainment on the Kentucky side of the Ohio River. I love these type of retail developments, but be warned parking is paid. Saturday night was five dollars while Sunday was only three. Between 11-2 and from Monday to Thursday, parking is free for their Lunch on the Levee promotion.
Wonderful seafood restaurant on the levee just across the river from Cincinnati (although they have many other locations in the East and Midwest). My cousin, whom we were visiting in Ohio, took me and my husband here for lunch. I had the Maryland crab cake sandwich which was one of the best I've eaten. My husband enjoyed sea bass prepared Asian style (they prepare the day's fresh catches 4 ways--Asian style, grilled, broiled or blackened.) Everything was fresh, seasoned well, and presented nicely.
Ok, maybe I'm going to sound too harsh compared to the other reviews, but when I spend nearly $100 for two people I expect complete excellence. We made reservations for 6:30 pm on a Saturday, and were seated within a couple of minutes after arriving. Once we were seated, we did not have any wait staff come to our table for at least ten minutes. Meanwhile, I saw numerous wait staff passing our table to wait on others. It's almost as if we weren't there. Once our waiter finally did take our drink order, service steadily got better. We ordered the Spinach and Crab Dip ($12) and it truly was excellent. Very yummy and I highly recommend trying it. They also serve complimentary sourdough bread and butter. This too was very good. My wife ordered the King Crab Legs, and her meal was fine. It's usually hard to mess up something like crab legs. I ordered the Chesapeake Bay Lump Crab Cakes. My meal was less than stellar. I have to completely agree with another reviewer about this meal. The crab cakes I felt were mushy in the middle. The crab meat was not lumpy at all, and instead was finely shredded. I felt as though they just took crab meat out of a can. There were also bits of shell in my crab cakes as well that I'd occasionally have to pull out of my mouth. The side items did nothing to compliment the dish either. It came with mashed potatoes, and a sweet corn sauté. The corn was pretty boring, and the mashed potatoes had nothing special added to them. For these kinds of prices, I was expecting a meal that would leave me envious of the chef and wishing I could cook like that. Sadly, I could have easily made this meal at home, for much cheaper, and probably far superior in taste. I'm sure if I would have ordered another dish, I might have had a better experience. Still, I left the restaurant feeling pretty bummed that I spent nearly $100 and didn't walk away feeling nothing but ecstatic about my dining experience.
Fresh seafood with a strong variety of preparations to match. I'm sure if you asked for your fish to be prepared through a method not on the menu that they could handle it. Their vegetable sides are al dente to the point of being nearly raw. So if you want your vegetables cooked ask them. Fish dishes usually also come with a rice side which is good but not great. Very friendly service. Worth trying.
