This is a gorgeously renovated space and a fine museum, to boot.

I was here for a dinner reception in the main lobby. Lucky me! The facilities are well-maintained, as is the HVAC system.

There was a duck in the fountain upon arrival. That made me pretty cheerful, too.

I wish I got to wander the museum. However, if you had no rental car, like me, it's pretty easy to get to from the Forest Park metrolink station - it's the closest museum to the station.

Not that much to see here.  But what they've got is very cool.  I really enjoyed the Lindburgh exhibit and learned a lot too .  It is amazing to think about our world without commercial air travel and he was one of the guys that made it happen.  Oh yeah, it's free too!

Ever notice that we are completely obsessed with the 1904 World's Fair in this city?  Yea, I hadn't noticed it really until a friend that moved here from out town told me how weird it was that we were so proud of this fact.  I guess a lot of cities do have World's Fairs...I don't know why we are so proud...perhaps because the ice cream cone was made at ours?  Perhaps because of that annoying Judy Garland movie?  Perhaps it has something to do with the awesomeness of Forest Park....Well, the answer could be found in this museum.

I came here one rainy afternoon with a friend because it was the one museum I had not been to a thousand times in Forest Park.  I was pleasantly surprised.  I loved the Lindbergh Exhibit, and being the true St. Louis girl that I am, I loved the World's Fair exhibit.  The place is all about Missouri History, which I think it's awesome that they have filled a huge museum with all this information.  It's really well put together, well maintained, and of course, FREE....like all good St. Louis attractions.

Gold star to you Missouri History Museum....you make me feel less geeky with my random Missouri History knowledge....Bravo.

The Missouri History Museum is free except for traveling exhibits, which are free on Tuesdays.  There is so much to see and discover here that visitors should plan to spend an entire day, as you aren't going to want to rush through.  I've visited the museum often, and only once has it been crowded, and that was due to a field trip.  Other than that, I typically see four other groups the entire time that I am visiting.

There are exhibitions on Lindbergh, the Civil War, the history of St. Louis, St. Louis artisans, the 1904 World Fair and much more, plus there are always plenty of changing visits.  I really liked looking through the Lindbergh exhibit, as it paints a more complete portrait of the man.  Rather than the perfect version we are often fed, the museum also portrays his stance on WWII and you get a sense of his anger problems.  The Lindbergh kidnapping is covered, which I personally find very interesting and sad.

For the researchers reading this, know that the museum has a vast collection of photos, manuscripts, architecture history and more that is available for study 12-5 T-F, 10-5 Sat or by appointment.

Ok, it IS free.  but I hope you're super interested in charles lindbergh and aviation or you might be bored.  oh, we did get to see a picture of ourselves floating over the arch in a hot air balloon, that was kinda fun.

and YES on the metrolink stop!  I often feel uncomfortable walking past huge groups of males in public, but even with my boyfriend we both feel skeeved out over there.

I'm a complete nerd for museums. I'll freely admit that. The Missouri History Museum is an awesome museum that is great for people of any age.

I absolutely love the exhibit on the 1904 World Fair. It's very interactive and you actually learn some funny, interesting facts. They have a map of the fair that you can stand on and see what stands in those spots today--pretty neat.

The Lindbergh section is also really great. The whole section has little interactive quizzes you can take throughout.

Probably the most fun section is the beer section--you can learn all about AB, the Lemp Brewery and other establishments in the area.

I can't believe I never went here on a field trip as a child; it most certainly would be a great place to take kids, because it's not at all dull. I just recently went there for the first time and really enjoyed myself.

What the toodles is wrong with the midwest?
Do you folks not appreciate or value the arts, sciences and history laden stuffs?  Everywhere we went that week, no one was there.
The icing on the cake was that our cab driver had no idea where this museum was.

Whatever.

Nice for us to have a huge FREE museum chock full of historical facts, artifacts and things to touch all to ourselves.

This place kicks booty.
It is free.
It has things to touch and play with.
It taught me more about Missouri, the midwest and St Louis than I ever thought I needed to know.  And I'm totally a better person now.
And it is free.

Go.  Go now.
Just don't go after dark and expect to not be icked out by the characters hanging out at the Metrolink stop.

A beautiful building with terrific information.

I remember going to Portland, Oregon and seeing the Lewis and Clarke exhibition which was produced by the Missouri Hisorical Society, and was one of my favorite exhibits I'd ever seen, so it was neat to see what else these historians had up their sleeve.

I particularly enjoyed the exhibition on the 1904 World's Fair, as well as the exhibition on aviaiton (especially the blue screen where it looks like you're in a hot air balloon flying over St Louis!)  The oral histories collected for the aviation exhibit were very interesting and gave a different perspective on the field.

All in all, not the absolute best museum I've ever been to, but a thoroughly enjoyable day never the less. Plus, you really can't beat the price!

The address listed here is for the library and research center, not the actual museum, which is at Lindell and DeBaliviere. Recent exhibits included a history of auto works in the 'Lou, and the Lee and Grant exhibit going on now (a great one for all civil war and history buffs.) This is a nice, bright space with a lot to look at, and it's one of the overlooked gems in Forest Park.

St. Louis has one of the better art museums, science  centers, botanical gardens and symphonies in the country...which is funded, in part, by donations from St. Louisans...including myself....not to mention The City Museum was named one of 2006 Best Public spaces in the World (NY Times article)..it's not that no one goes...they just dont usually go during the hottest part of the year

This museum is fabulous for older kids and adults.  There are so many interactive displays, and the World's Fair exhibit is amazing.
We came here for one of my master's classes in education and wrote about projects students could do based on the exhibits.  It was actually pretty fun, since the museum offers so much material.  They also host presentations throughout the year and concerts on the front lawn.

For those who aren't really into history, they have a beautiful courtyard, gift shop, and even a cafe.  I'm not a history fanatic by any means, but really enjoyed browsing through the gift shop and playing with all the interactive displays.
