NO AIR CONDITIONING.  Not even in the lobby or restaurants.  While I thoroughly enjoyed my stay, this was the one pain point and the largest downside to the whole trip given that it was in the 80's and extremely humid (end of July).

Ferry.  If you take Shepler's Ferry to get to the island, they will tag your luggage and transport it to the hotel for you, at which point the bellman will bring it up to your room (the latter is included in the price of the room).  This is an excellent option given it's a bit of a hike to the resort from the ferry (or should I say more of a leisurely stroll without having any luggage to carry!).

Bike rental.  $15 for half a day and can be rented right at the hotel (same price pretty much everywhere).  You should walk to the hotel from the ferry and then rent a bike there so that it's easy to drop off when you are done with it.  Don't forget, there are no cars on the island!

Brunch buffet.  You can get it at the resort for about $20 a pop, and it's definitely good food.  However, one of the days I also walked into the main part of town to try something at one of the restaurants and enjoyed it much more, and paid about half the price.

Glow in the dark mini golf.  This is so much fun!  Right at the bottom of the resort, wait until it gets dark and play the $15, 18 hole mini golf course.  It's really fun because it's completely dark (and thus everyone has similar abilities) and they give you glow in the dark balls to play with.

All in all, I enjoyed my stay on the island and definitely enjoyed the staff and other amenities at Mission Point, but next time I think I might try out the B&B charm.

Don't let the "resort" in the name fool you; this is nothing more than a has-been hotel that may have been something in its prime, but now lacks many modern amenities that we have come to expect at such high prices.

The breakfast buffet is very expensive and very disappointing. The bread for toast was stale and the eggs were never fresh and tasted like microwaved egg product. After breakfast I was convinced to not eat at the Resort for the remainder of my stay.

The bellstaff was very prompt and friendly; we had no problems with getting our bags to and from the ferry.

    In summary:
    No air conditioning
    Far from town
Stinky hallways and elevators in the Straits Lodge
    Overpriced, underwhelming food
    High price for lackluster surroundings

Stayed here on 7/13/11. Bottom line... This hotel does not live up to how it appears on their website. The lobby is quite impressive, but the rooms basically look like old college dorm buildings. Once in the room, we discovered that there was NO AIR CONDITIONING due to the fact that the buildings are so old. They do provide portable fans in the rooms, but what they really need to have are wall-mounted A/C units.

To their credit, Mission Point has a very friendly staff. Everyone we encountered was pleasant and always willing to help. Unfortunately, it's the tired look of the place and the lack of A/C that will keep me from ever coming back.

    CHOPHOUSE REVIEW

There is no way to write specifically for the  Chop House in Mission Point so I have to write it under the resort name.

To put it simply, they failed.  The service was great - for the most part - even though they missed one of our drinks. But the meat - the most important part of the meal - was very poorly cooked.  The first round mostly either overly cooked, or still cold, the second round was for some people right on, and for others, totally wrong.

To their credit, they did comp those meals, but it was terribly disappointing after such an expensive meal.  The rest of the food was good, my Veal Chop was overcooked but the toppings and sides with it were really good. And the appetizers were very well done.

I just wouldn't recommend it when there are other great options on the island you could head to instead.

I suppose the nature of an island only accessible by boat/ferry and which has no land-based motor vehicles of any kind lends itself to a de facto 'import tax' on the cost of any goods, services and accomodations that are to be had on said island.  I suppose also that it is perhaps unfair to assign a number of stars to Mission Point Resort on BEAUTIFUL Mackinac Island without doing a full price comparison relative to other comparables on the island.

Nevertheless, I assign Mission Point Resort 3 stars.  It should be noted that this rating doesn't accurately reflect how much I enjoyed my stay (or the wedding I attended) on Mackinac Island.  Were I rating the island itself (or the wedding), I would award 5 (or more) stars.  On to the particulars:

The grounds are GORGEOUS.  It seems every day in northern Michigan is forecast to rain, but instead a morning cloudy fog yields to sunshine at around 2pm.  This was the case this past weekend, as ubiquitous rays of sun beat down upon the expansive green lawns, tennis courts, "executive putt-putt" course, many balconies and verandas, and handful of restaurants that round out Mission Point.  The hotel itself looks over a veritable ocean of lake water (albeit eastward, so the sunsets are nowhere to be found).

The hotel itself is also eerily reminiscent of the famous Overlook Hotel from The Shining.  Confusing mazes of similar looking hallways abound, and if you find yourself lost in one of the buildings that houses hotel rooms other than the one you are staying in, you may be in for a good long wander (all the while hoping you don't run into room two three seven).  Unfortunately, the entire hotel is without air conditioning.  I imagine this isn't a problem during the winter time, but it was slightly awkward to have a situation where most of the rooms inside the hotel were hotter than it was outside.

The service at the hotel was pretty reasonable all around with a few exceptions.

It's tough to say without a full comparison, but if I were going back to Mackinac Island for a regular vacation, I would probably explore elsewhere rather than come back to Mission Point for a "suite" of two rooms (one queen bed and two twins) that came out to about $350 a night.  If you've already made your reservation though, rest assured you'll have a great time.

Ever since I was 10 years old I read a book that took place on Mackinac Island.  To this day I can't remember the name of the book but have always had it on my travel list to visit Mackinac Island.  A girlfriend in Chicago marries on 8/6 so my husband and I decided to take our summer vacation to be the week prior to her wedding.  We neglected to use yelp for reviews prior to making our online hotel reservation; big mistake.  However; after looking at various properties and rates for July travel; we decided upon the Mission Point Resort.  Arrival on to the island is via ferry.  We took the Starline Ferry Company (ps they offer a military discount) and arrived late afternoon on a Saturday.  Our choices were to take a shuttle (horse drawn mind you) or walk the 3/4 mile distance to the hotel.  It was a lovely afternoon so we walked.  Upon arrival into the hotel I said to my husband, "There is no air conditioning."  His reply was, "Sure there is; it's cooler in here."  When the front desk agent checked us in; he said, "I'm sorry, there is no air conditioning anywhere in the hotel." Strike one. The hotel was probably the rage in the 60s but doesn't appear to have been updated.  Our front desk agent was very friendly, accommodating and even offered us an additional military discount. After weaving our way through hallways and stairwells; we finally made our way to our room.  While the decor is reminiscent of that camp/lodge feeling straight out of "Dirty Dancing" it was comfortable nonetheless.  Our bellman showed us where the two box fans were located and we proceeded to turn them on and leave them on during the duration of our stay.  Note to hotel; window a/c units work wonders!  Saturday night was our anniversary so we decided to dine in one of the hotel's restaurants as we were given a 10% off our entire bill coupon.  We ate at the Round Bar Grill.  It was a buffet meal.  The service was good but the meal itself was below average.  We decided after that meal to use yelp for the remainder of our stay for our dining selections and options. The internet service is free but very slow. They have a heated pool and an activities center which included a gym and theater. We rented bicycles at the hotel which was very convenient.  Don't try to shop around for rental pricing; most everyone charges the same.  All the employees here have been informative, polite and kind.  The service is good; the hotel itself just needs to be updated and food quality improved. We liked the fact that it was located at the furthest point away from all the hustle and bustle but we'd probably try another property or a B&B on our next stay.  And if you are a child less couple such as ourselves, I'd recommend traveling just before school lets out or just after Labor Day.  It's a very kid friendly destination.

When you think of a resort things that come to mind are luxury, pampering, and comfort. When you think of Mission Point Resort (or The Last Resort as my husband and I are now fondly referring to it as) the three most ACCURATE descriptions would be stinky, out dated, and hot. Unfortunately for me, I didn't even think that there would be a question as to whether or not the hotel would have air conditioning. I assumed that for astronomical $450/night fee air conditioning would have been included. I've stayed at roadside dives at $40/night and had air conditioning that could freeze your eyelids off, lol. However, be aware, there is no air conditioning at good OLD Mission Point.

My husband and I went there last week for our honeymoon, and unfortunately it was too hot to do much of anything in the room other than pray for sleep & and to thank everything holy that the bats (yes i said bats) that were swarming the restaurant and lobby had not found there way to our room.

The room had a very musty smell and I was told that there was nothing that could be done about that issue. Also, when we booked the trip we were told that we would be in a Lakeview King room, however, the bed that we received in the room was a very small Queen. We were told there to that nothing could be done. The furniture in our room had some seriously gnarly stains (it looked like they had had a few incontinent guests), and when we asked for a different chair...you guessed it, NOTHING could be done.

The 1 meal that we ordered at The Chop House was less than savory. Our total bill was $74.00 which included 2 entrees, 1 Bud Light, and a soda. We also got to experience at least 5 bats that were flying around the restaurant dive bombing us. They got in through the open doors, open because there is NO AIR CONDITIONING, and then they couldn't get out. I spent a good portion of the meal terrified one was going to get me. Our meal consisted of a brisket that was so fatty my husband could not eat it, and a half rack of ribs that had more sauce than meat. When I asked our server if I could have something else from the menu, I was told in his VERY broken English, that we would still have to pay for the items we sent back. Very disappointing. Also, in this Last Resort, there is NO room service. After dinner my husband went looking for a vending machine only to discover that the 1 on our floor no longer worked. He went to 2 other floors before tracking down a working vending machine. I ended up eating a bag of Cheetos and a snickers for dinner that night.

Seeing as our room was hotter than blue blazes at all time of the day (and most of the night) we tried out the swimming pool. There was only 1 pool, and I am not exaggerating when I say that I have been in cleaner and more modern facilities at the community pool in my home town. The pool was extremely cold, and there were cracks all over the pool area. These cracks were great for stubbing toes, and I did that multiple times. The last stubbing was so severe i needed to ask the front desk for a band-aid. However, because my injury happened after 5pm there were no band-aids available. So i suggest that if you are planning to injure yourself at The Last Resort you do so between the hours of 9-5. I digress, the hot tub that was at the pool area was full of dirt, and it appeared to be less then half full. I was not about to attempt a relaxing soak, not that I could have because there were always a multitude of children, unattended, using them.

Overall, this was the WORST hotel experience I have ever had. I was very thankful that my husband and I had only planned to spend 2 days there. It was creepy, it was old, it was smelly, and it was full of bats. It was everything that Stephen King's "The Overlook Hotel" was about. ICK!

We are disappointed in the facilities, as our family unfortunately picked a weekend that it rained more often during the day than was forecast.  So we spent more time in the hotel than we expected.  We anticipated that we might spend some time in the hotel, and allowed our son to bring his PS3.  What we discovered was that the TV set in our room was over 15 years old and didn't have the basic video and audio jacks needed to connect a PS3.  I have seen a TV set this old in a long, long time.  When I asked at the front desk about a converter, I got an immediate response "we have no converters", indicating to me that they get this question often.  When I asked to speak to the manager, I was told he was in a meeting, and would call me after wards.  I was asked to write a message to the manager.  I did, asking for newer TV or a new room.  I didn't receive a call back from the manager.  Instead, I got a call back from the same clerk I spoke to who said the TVs in all of the rooms were the same, and if we didn't like it, we were free to leave after staying our one night minimum.  Frankly, this hotel is old and tired.  The management of it does nothing to improve the experience.  I definitely would not recommend this hotel for families.  It is too long a walk from town, and it is a $5 horse drawn cab fare each way each person from the hotel to town.  We ate once in one of the hotel restaurants and the food was average.  Overall, this is a two star experience, and not worth the price.
