Mission Pie has great pie, a comfortable atmosphere and an admirable mission statement.
I've come here to meet friends or just enjoy some dessert multiple times. I like to sit at the community table and people watch inside and out.
Once I was here when a school group was singing and playing instruments, just great!

Mission Pie is more than mediocre but less than great.  I hear that they hire at-risk youth in the city, but it does not seem that they are coaching these youth on customer relations, which is not actually helping them beyond a paycheck.  When I got there on a Saturday evening, there was barely any pie there.  I have been there two times (the last was a Saturday night as well).  There were barely any pies there that night as well.  I am thinking that maybe that's because it's the end of the day and there just aren't that many pies left.

But seriously, if you're gonna name yourself with the word "Pie" in the name, then you'd better have some kind of attractive display with, well, pies.  There was a teeny pumpkin pie, a typical apple pie, and a banana cream pie and that was it for the desserts.  Hmmmm....not much selection.

The guy who served me at the counter was slouchy and really didn't impress me or seem like he was impressed working there at all.  Granted it's an outreach program, dammit, teach these kids some customer service skills.

We decided on the banana cream pie, which I would say was very good.  It just didn't make up for the poor customer service or the small selection to warrant anything much more than mediocre.

Strange that my favorite thing from Mission Pie was not pie at all...  It was the scones!  Black currant, rich and buttery with just a hint of sweetness...  Perfection!

Prior to my scone scarfing, I partook of the chicken pot pie and the plum pie.  The pot pie was delicious, though not life changing.  It was nice to have a pot pie that didn't require me to chug a gallon of water afterwards because of high salt concentration...  The plum slice was very subtle and understated, combined with the fresh whipped cream it was a nice treat.

Bottom Line:  While I feel Mission Pie merits an overall 3-star, they definitely deserve a 5-star for their at-risk youth outreach program.  It's places like Mission Pie giving back that make our community that much better.

Even though I think its really awesome what Mission Pie is doing, it still doesn't make up for the flavorless pumpkin pie.  If I didn't already know what I was eating was pumpkin pie I wouldn't have guessed.  I didn't taste any pumpkin and it lacked sweetness.
I wanted so bad for it to be good especially since I was craving PP and read so much about this place.  Maybe their specialty is the banana creme pie, so IF I go back I'll try that.
Finally, if you take it to go put it in the fridge first because it is  really soft.

The Good: The pie was excellent. The crust crispy. The apples inside tart but sweet and firm.

The Bad:
The slice of pie, I had to go, looked like someonelse's leftovers. It was maybe half of a normal piece of pie, crust broken and it looked like someone scraped the remnants of the pie tin into the box. It was like 3 bite pie.

The Ugly:
The guy who served me my pie had an open wound about the size of of a 50 cent piece on his wrist that glinted with that fresh infection look. He was also either sick or high. None of these things I like with my pie.

The annoying:
On the sign the said "Savory Pie" $4.00-$4.50" I ordered a pot pie, assuming it a savory pie because there was no other menu item to match it, and it was a $7.00 pie. Herumph. Also when I asked them to tell me the kinds of pie they had the pointed to the signs in front of the pie and said "they are labeled" the problem was all the signs were smeared beyond reading. Hellllo.

Their banana cream pie is to die for!!  (5 stars!)

Not sure about the service. How many times do I have to repeat my order before you can get it right? 2 slices of banana cream pie... 2. Banana cream. Repeat: 4 times. (3 stars)

When it's good it's five stars.  But mission pie is inconsistent.  Sometimes the pie is overflowing with amazing fruit.  Sometimes it's a little wan.  Sometimes the staff is clean friendly and alert.  Sometimes its sullen and slow.  Really, it swings from 5 stars to 2, so I have to settle on 3.

Atmosphere is always terrific.

Mission Pie has been generous to my nonprofit.  I never heard of this place before, found it online, mentioned it to colleagues, and they all raved about it.  Tried just their pumpkin pie, and it was incredible.  It had real pumpkin filling and the crust had a wonderful texture and taste.  When I went inside, they have a variety of pies and the space is open and congenial.  I would definitely go back.

I had to race from dinner to get pie to go from Mission Pie before they closed. This place is cool - old school.  9PM, lots of people socializing and enjoying the cloister inside.

My mission was to basically case the joint and find out if it is a good morning hang out - yes, yes it will be.  And also to get some pie to sample. Everyone raves about the banana cream pie and I needed to check out the fruit pie - why?  Because no one makes a better fruit pie than I do.  I picked up a slice of apple and raspberry pear (sort of an exotic).

Anyway, the results are in.  The pies are very good - especially the banana cream - and I would order any one of them in a restaurant for desert. But, here is my theory of the pie.  1) Its difficult to screw up a cream pie once you have the formula down - I could be wrong, because I don't claim to be a cream pie expert. 2) No one makes a better fruit pie than me, especially apple.  The apple slices were too big for my liking and it had too much nutmeg (any nutmeg is too much nutmeg).  The raspberry pear is very good - a lot of pear and a little bit of raspberry.

All in all, I'm looking forward to polishing them all off in the morning - actually the banana cream is already offed - pretty fantastic really.

Service with a smile - very friendly place - two thumbs up!

This place no longer deserves five stars, as the products are a little hit or miss nowadays.  You can buy a $5 gallete, only to find out they really skimped on the fruit filling.  I like that their muffins and scones are not too sweet, but they are really skimpy on the fruit/nut ingredients.

Their coffee is disappointing and it would be great if they could switch to whole wheat flour in their pie crust.

I recently went back to Mission Pie with my parents. One again the mixed berry pie was incredible, but what changed my rating of 4 stars to a new one of 5 is the banana cream pie.

Seriously, it is the closest to bliss you're likely to get. The horrible parking be damned, I would walk on hot coals for the Banana cream pie!

I've been meaning to stop in here for quite some time now.

Despite it being a pie place I tried their bacon quiche w radish greens. DAMN it was good.

I can't wait to try one of the many pies they had available. The space was very well-lit with natural light and has about 10 tables and 1 large communal table.

The staff also was very nice. Nice in that hippie/granola kind of way that reminds you that you're in SF...which is a great thing.

I definitely recommend this place.

Mission Pie will make men LOVE you.

Seriously!

J and D mentioned that they wanted to try Mission Pie.  So being the food enabler that I am, the next time I saw them, I brought along my favorite Mission Pie:  Banana Cream.  The combo of pie crust, bananas, pudding, and whipped cream is IRRESISTIBLE.

And apparently, now so am I.

Later that night, I got pie texted.  The messages said, "thanks for the pie.  We both LUV you" and "now both have a crush on you."

SWEET.

I realize I will be disagreeing with most reviews here, but I have my reasons.

Several months ago I had some pie at a friend's party, we got into a whole big conversation about how much I love pie, how I have a 700 page book called "pie" with every conceivable recipe and how I had to cease and desist my attempt to make every recipe in the book, cover to cover, part way through after I'd gained quite a bit of weight from the project -- true story. Many ha-ha's and my friend starts telling me about Mission Pie.

So, finally I'm in the city, it's peach season (I LOVE peach pie) and all the stars are aligned, I go to Mission Pie for the first and last time.

I walk in -- they're blasting rap music and the guy behind the counter can't stop rapping along (pardon me for coming in during your favorite song, sir) to speak to me. Yes, he does get me the peach pie and put it in a box and take my money (EIGHTEEN DOLLARS!!), but not a word from him to me.

So I leave. Not a pleasant experience ambiance-wise, but I assure myself the pie will be worth it, the pie will be worth it. I think "oh my Jeebus, did I really just spend nearly $20 on a PIE??" but I tell myself it's organic and the pie will be worth it, the pie will be worth it.

I think you know how this turns out.

The pie was NOT worth it. The crust is tasteless and burned -- oh, ok, burned is a taste, I suppose. No texture to speak of. A crust should be flaky and sweet and crunchy and a bit salty -- I KNOW pie, I KNOW pie crust. I make it a thousand times better than Mission Pie's. And the peaches? Well, those that are in there (it's not got many, so I'm not quite sure what that EIGHTEEN DOLLARS goes to) are NOT good. They're not sweet and they're not even peeled. OK, with most fruits I like when they're not peeled, keeps more nutrients in, yada yada. But peaches? You ALWAYS peel peaches because they're FUZZY. It's not pleasant having so much friction on the tongue.

Argh, I'm mad at Mission Pie. I want my money back.

Starving, we left SF Street Food Festival and came to the first "cute" venue we saw. (Honestly, I made my friend come in here b/c I loved all the windows, and the adorable country-esque ambiance inside. I kind of had no idea what type of food they even served at the time, but I knew I wanted some.)

Once inside, I knew we may not have made the healthiest of decisions, but we made a good decision. Mixed Berry Pie to the rescue! It was tasty & good, but not as dense as the really good stuff that I love, though it was probably healthier, and made with more natural ingredients. Still, it also seemed more crumbly. Tasty, but not the best I've ever had.

One other plus: I LOVED the yellow/silver wallpaper behind the cash wrap, and the silver/gray crown-molding archway. Kudos to the interior designer, bravo! (It reminded me of a David Bromstad design - my favorite - from HGTV's Color Splash and/or Design Star.) :)

Actually I'd prefer to give them 3 & 1/2 stars.

Pros: Delicious food and coffee. Wholesome all-local and all-organic ingredients. Support for farmers and the Mission community. Nice ambience/decor.

Cons: The service is horribly, hopelessly incompetent. (Please: Don't leave a customer at the register to play with your iPod/iPhone. Don't get confused when I bring in your coffee bags for reuse, as per your stated policy. Etc.)

Dear Mission Pie: Please hire someone with a high school degree. Otherwise, I love you.

Whenever I've found myself in the vicinity of Mission Pie, I've craved more savoury things rather than sweet.  I can say that their Bacon and Radish Greens quiche is absolutely fabulous and delicious. Chicken Pot Pie is often on the menu.

On another occasion I sampled their Plum Frangipane, and it was as though the heavens opened and a choir of angels belted out a chorus.  One of the best pies I'd had in a very looong time... If I had to do it over, I would have purchased an entire tart and consumed that.

Though I am not always enamoured with everything on offer, the bright, cheery space is enough to put one in a happy mood the moment one steps foot in the door... Portions can be small, and while Twitter is a convenient way to keep up with their offerings it's not always updated.

Nonetheless, I love the ethos and community spirit behind Mission Pie, and I'm eager to actually journey to a workday at Pie Ranch, and further support them that way.

I came here with a group of my friends a few weeks back and I had some excellent baked goods. I'm a big fan of their banana cream pie, which is obviously their most popular pie. I asked the guy at the counter what his favorite pie was and he seemed to love the berry pie (seasonal) and while I was mentally inclined to have that for my second slice, my stomach overruled and demanded yet another piece of the banana cream pie.

That said, their banana cream pie still pales in comparison to Tartine's banana cream tart. If the Tartine version is 5 stars, then this banana cream pie is a very strong 3 stars. Looks like you gotta pay about a buck and a quarter per star in my system. ;)

I've been here twice now- once for a slice of banana cream pie as a treat and then another to pick up a pie as dessert for a get-together.  The banana cream pie didn't disappoint, and neither did the mixed berry pie I got for dessert.  Both pies had a great, flaky crust that was buttery without being overly full of fat and the fillings are really tasty- I especially enjoyed the large chunks of strawberry and raspberry in the mixed berry pie.  The crumble topping helped a bit as well.  The banana cream pie was also good- the pudding filling wasn't too sweet and it had a nice banana flavor.  Given the summer season, its good to take advantage of the bounty being offered by Mission Pie right now- I wouldn't mind going back for a slice of the other pies being offered.

So, why the 4 stars even though I clearly enjoyed my pies?  Unfortunately, the price is a little restrictive- $18 for a whole pie is a bit much to pay on a regular basis.  Alas, this shall mean that I'll have to wait for special occasions to warrant getting more pie from here.

Oh, Mission Pie. You kept me from massacring and Columbine-ing pedestrian passerby after a douchebag kicked my baby's derailleur in, leading me to spend 3 hours at the Bike Kitchen attempting to fix the f*er.

Your crumbly crusted mixed berry goodness is a staple in keeping the frustration down as I scrape the grease out from under my nails.

Oh, and your wooden tables, none yet rickety, are awesome for those four-hour conversations about everything under the sun.

Decent Pie + Charming Environment + Progressive Food = Wonderful.

This place, to me, embodies all the things that a good business should be.  You can read up on their mission and values on their website; I won't go into too much detail here.

I think this place deserves several stars just for the social justice aspect and for being a model for other for-profits looking to do the same.  I've been having more conversations with friends lately about how to think and talk about food in a more meaningful and productive way instead of just OMG FOOD IS GOOD YUM YUM YUM EAT!  And I think Mission Pie helps us do just that, demonstrating all the ways in which food can be a force for good - in building community, in empowering youth, in supporting a healthy Earth.

That's where the first two stars come from.

The next star is for the aesthetics of the place.  I've only been here in the evenings, when the place is softly lit, with cozy furniture and a nice homey charm.  It's just really simple and nice.

And then I'll give one more star for the pies themselves, which are good, but didn't blow me away.  I've tried several varieties, and was happy with the fresh eats, but to be honest, the pies aren't the main draw for me.  (That's why I'm leaning towards 4 stars instead of 5.)

However, I still really like this place.  Some of my favorite kinds of adventures are the quiet, creative ones you go on with your friends, when you're just sitting together, eating food in a comfortable place like Mission Pie.  The place just feels comfy, the staff is really nice and friendly, and I can't quite explain why it feels so good, but it just does.

Thanks, Mission Pie.

I have fallen in love with mission pie. All it took was a community celebration for their re-opening (check out the mural in the back and the sexy reclaimed sidewalk), and a few old people enjoying pie together as if it were their first date. Hell, maybe it was.

As far as I'm concerned, life would be better if we all slowed down and ate more homemade pie.

Ode to Mission Pie:

Apple, peach, and pumpkin pie
Flavors make the tastebuds fly
It's the best dessert in all the city,
though sometimes service is kinda shitty...

But your flaky crust
hath gained my trust
And fresh whipped cream
completes the dream.

O how sweet or so savory,
everything here is super flavor-y
I like your vibe and free wi-fi
Thank you, spank you, Mission Pie.

Definitely the best pie-specific place in the city. Well, it doesn't have much competition, but regardless, the mixed berry pie is really great. So is the service. Not gonna lie, there are places with better pie, but this place is really nice to come to, to get a coffee at and sit with friends for hours. Plus, the kids working there are great (yes, kids, they do an awesome youth-outreach thing. Yay community!)

I love the idea of an all pie shop.

I also love the fact that Mission Pie uses all natural ingredients that come from Pie Ranch, owned by graduates of the UC Santa Cruz Farm Apprentice program. They grow all the wheat, berries, and goodness that goes into Mission Pies!

I've had the apple and pumpkin pies here. They're expensive and don't particularly blow my mind, but I like the nice shop and convenient location.

I also dig the communal table, free reading material and wi-fi in the shop. My friend uses it as his office away from home. The wi-fi hasn't worked for me in the past, so I don't go there to work.

Oh, I do remember this time I spent a few hours at Mission Pie transcribing an interview (one of the most tedious things you could do). After a few hours, one of the guys came over and hooked it up with a free slice. Sweet.

I have never stepped food (Bwahaha, food on the brain, I meant fooT!!!) inside this place...but my friends have brought me numerous pies from this place.

So far, I've tried their apple, apple rhubarb and something else. My favorite is the apple rhubarb and they're organic, all-natural, etc... Fillin g = delightful, large pieces and obviously not out of a can.  Crust = buttery, flaky, but quality ingredients comes through.... OMG yum.

You can't stop at one slice, and the pie is worth the $$ upwards of $20! :D (Granted, I have yet to buy one yet :P)

Go get some, yo!

Charming.  Enjoyable.  Green.

Had it not been for the anticipation and over-hype, Mission Pie could have been a success.

The ambiance is warm and jovial - people having educated discussion at the large round table, father and daughter sharing a moment at adjacent table, wood floors reminiscent of a simpler time, sun shining through the large windows.  You certainly can feel the happy, carefree waves at MP.

The pie however, while good, was not mind blowing.  The crust was soggy and paper thin, causing half of it to fall off before it hit my plate!  Cry!   The strawberry rhubarb was delicious!  ...but a whole of three bites.  Double cry. Based on my trusted yelp friends Genevieve and Juila though, I'm definitely going to have to give MP a round two.

I'd certainly go back for the ambiance alone or even to enjoy an earth friendly cuppa joe as well!

$3-6 for a slice - sizes vary!!

My oh my do I love Mission Pie! It seems to me that homemade pie is always a good idea, even more so when made with sustainably organic ingredients. These lovely little slices come from the best stuff that Pie Ranch has to offer. Even if the word organic doesn't strike your fancy, eating a piece of pie from Mission Pie is not just good for your tummy, but great for the community of people who work the farm in Pescadero.

"Pie Ranch works with educators and community collaborators in diverse urban, suburban and rural settings to help students apply what they've learned at Pie Ranch in their daily lives. "

For those of us who never see the light outside the city, Mission Pie offers a slice of small town inside its wooden-walled, wide windowed sunny cafe nestled along Mission Street. Sometimes there's just nothing better than a slice of banana cream and a cup of mint tea ala Mission Pie.

I had always wanted to try this place. I'm more of a pie person than a cake person (although who can resist either?). All the pies look good as well as their other baked goods and treats.

I had a slice of their peach raspberry pie ($3.5). Since the place was jam packed I ordered it to go. Be aware that they don't have any forks, knives, or spoons for to-go orders. I guess it's that whole green movement? They could at least have biodegradable utensils.

The pie is pretty good although not my ideal slice of fruit pie. It was too moist and soggy. The peaches were the canned kind. Plus the super thin crust doesn't help out at all. However the flavor and mouthfeel is satisfying. I felt a little cheated with the portions. I'm not fat, I just wanna get my money's worth.

Why is this place always full of caucasians?

CASH only.

My first visit to Mission Pie was before its big remodel.  I was uncomfortably full from lunch, but I'd heard such wonderful things about the pie that I still wanted a slice or two to sample after my long BART ride home.  At the time, I got Banana Cream and Walnut.  Both were absolutely delectable.  The fresh whipped cream is what really makes the Banana Cream special and the Walnut was not too sweet as many nut pies tend to be.  At the time, I was in love with the pie, but found the space to be awkwardly crowded.

I went in for my second trip and was pleasantly surprised by the remodel.  Mission Pie is really nice and spacious, and I really love how they've changed the space.  They also make great use of having a bunch of large, communal tables rather than overcrowding the space with too many two-person tables and a sea of clunky chairs.

Today, I sampled the Mixed Berry pie with the crumble topping and it was just as delish as I remembered the other pies to be.  Their coffee is really yummy and I love that they support a local beanery!

Hurray for pie, and an extra Huzzah for Mission Pie!

sigh....their banana creme pie recipe changed, SAD this was my favorite!!  The good news is that they took out the corn syrup...the bad news is
it now tastes little to jello-y for me taste:(  I still love this place but my favorite pie has changed.  Go for the mixed berry.  It is mind blowing!!!

I like coming here to relax in the evening. The atmosphere is casual and comforting, and there is complementary water for you. The establishment attempts to be eco friendly, offering local honeys and products for sale and has recycling bins for trash disposal.Their pies are delicious, and there are great vegan options as well. You can get quiche, veggie pot pie, potato salad, etc. but I'd go for the pies. I personally like the mixed berry pie with whip. Their coffee is good as well.

I kept hearing Mission Pie had the best pie in SF.  Based on my small sampling, it was good but not necessarily the best.

The banana cream pie was average, suffered from a dearth of bananas and an excess of cream.  The flavor was good, maybe too sweet for my tastes, but then again--what are you doing in the pie game if sweetness ain't your thing?

The walnut pie was phenomenal however.  Tons of toasted walnuts held together with some gooey masonry work on a nice, flaky crust.  This is what pie is all about.

Its too bad that I only managed to try two of their many pies during my time in SF.  If I could throw out the banana cream as an outlier, Mission Pie might earn the bump to five stars.
