101 reviews for Mission Pet Hospital
One of the Business' Favorite Reviews What's This?
Brought my puppy back to see Dr. Press. He's great! Very thorough and friendly. He acknowledged my concerns from our first visit to the office and said that they had sparked a lot of discussion and appreciate all feedback.
I had Otter neutered here on Tuesday by Dr. Leigh (sp?). Everyone was very friendly and the doctor called me right after the surgery to tell me how Otter was doing. I picked him up about 5pm and he was definitely doped up as was expected (here's the little guy after his surgery: http://vimeo.com/7678838). By morning he was feeling great and even got a chance to run around the park a bit. Yay! Happy puppy!

BEST. VETERINARIAN. EVER.
I've been going here for 3 years now with my dog Pixel.
Most recently he was attacked by a Pit bull and Dr. Lie came to our rescue. He was absolutely fantastic with him, he's definitely got a way with animals - and people too. Dr. Gordon has also been pretty great to us in the past too.
Finally the best part... they don't charge you an arm and a leg! Maybe just a finger or two ;)
Wanted to update specifically to shout out Dr. Lie. My husband and I are taking our cat to Australia with us and Dr. Lie has been great at helping us along with this arduous process.
He's literally they only doctor I've taken our cat to that doesn't flinch when he starts hissing and wailing, but rather makes jokes about his sunny disposition.

We have a little kitty who's been known to seriously maim vets who don't know what they're doing.… Read more »
The vet came in, one I hadn't seen before, a tall, handsome doctor named Dr. Lee. He had a ponytail..
"Oh, PK," he said as he scratched PK behind her ear, " we're going to send you to a better place."
"What's PK stand for?" he asked
"P-Passionate Kisses," I stutter.
"Of course," he said.
It was over in seconds. When I go, I want to go like PK - - quick and sudden and assisted by a handsome gentle doctor.
One visit down and so far 5 stars. My cat is a little sensitive about his weight and was really relieved when Dr. Gordon didn't make him feel like a fatty, he is after all just big-boned. In all seriousness the vet said that if my boy stayed at his 16 pounds of husky feline, there would be no issue.
We switched him to food to help with his digestion and rank breath, which seems to be working. Dr. Gordon was cool enough to let me know that it was not necessary to keep paying the high price for the prescription diet on which he initially put my cat, and suggested some cheaper non-prescription alternatives that would also suffice.
I too have been completely satisfied with the care and communication I've received from Dr. Andrew Lie. In one instance, Dr. Lie emailed and called me immediately with the results from important lab tests. Definitely recommend!
About 4 months after moving to San Francisco, my indoor-outdoor cat disappeared for over a week, only to come back with a gross dime-sized gaping wound on her back haunch. I called Mission Pet Hospital where they scheduled me an appointment for half an hour later. My cat was seen immediately, and the staff was friendly and caring. Dr. Andrew Lie was absolutely wonderful with my usually less-than-behaved cat. He clearly laid out my options and gave me his honest opinion on the situation.
They cleaned up and medicated my cat, and I was out of the office in just over 20 minutes, though I didn't feel rushed in the slightest.
I'll definitely go back when/if my pain-in-the-butt cat needs more care.
Highly recommended.
THANK YOU MISSION PET HOSPITAL!!!
my vet is way across town, so it's hard for me to get over there for his prescription food. i called around, and mission p.h. was the only other vet on this side of town that would sell it to me w/out being a client
i take my cat to another vet, as i don't want to switch doctors at this point in his life...(he's an old guy). however, i have taken a cat to mission pet hosp. in the past, and was very pleased with the care and service she and i received. ,, which makes my life much easier.
"Thank you, thank you, thank you," says Jack.
"You saved him from sure death. You may have been a wee pricey for my owner's taste," said Jack, " but you saved me from sure death."
Liver failure looked like it was imminent, but you saved him instead. The entire staff was nice and took me and (and Jack) in. And held our hand (and paws) the whole way.
Thank you.
I cannot rave enough about the amazing treatment that my cat (Mr. T.) and I got from Dr. Andrew Lie at Misison Pet Hospital!
Mr. T. decided to get deathly sick two days before I left the country for two weeks. Dr. Lie gave amazing physical care to my kitty and emotional support for me. He was willing to communicate with my mom (from another city) to make decisions and give updates while I was out of contact. He minimized a very expensive bill (although thoroughly justified. Mr. T. received a LOT of care) and went out of his way to arrange care for Mr. T. at an emergency hospital while MPH closed down on Sunday.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. To Dr. Lie and the rest of the staff at MPH, you saved my kitty's life, were concerned about my emotional helath, and went above and beyond any level of care I expected to receive. Thank you.
My dog (depicted here) is generally healthy, so we haven't needed much from Mission Pet Hospital until this month. But that's still five years in which I could always count on someone at MPH to give me veterinary advice on the phone and make appointments for me. Now that the little beast seems to have a bacterial infection, I am experiencing some of the more medical aspects of the hospital - and they're terrific. If I have to have a serious, scary phone call about test results, there's no one I'd rather have it with than Dr Press. He tells me the maximum amount of information in a very understandable and gentle way. And always with an explanation of how much things cost. All doctors should be this forthcoming, articulate and kind.
We had to wait about 20 minutes for Ruggles' appointment but that's a similar wait time to most doctor's offices. The waiting room was stocked with magazines and doggy books.
I brought Ruggles in for his first check-up and his doctor, Andrew, was very nice to me and Ruggles. He listened while I explained my questions and provided comprehensible, reassuring answers. Ruggles did not seem to mind his exam at all! After about 10 minutes in our appointment, Ruggles was cleared and we were ready to go. I had asked about getting his nails trimmed there but it would have been about $25 and apparently less expensive elsewhere. I hope I will never be back for an emergency but am glad that the Mission Pet Hospital is there and responsible just in case!
I've been going here for about 10 years and I LOVE it!
I am very grateful to the vets and all the staff at MPH.
Dr. Lie is AWESOME! He is very professional, well informed, detail oriented and explains to me exactly what procedures my cat will need and how much they will cost.
Dr. Bollich and Dr. Scarlett (no longer there) have seen me through my accident prone kitten's numerous injuries. They have both been very kind and accommodating. Dr. Scarlett also worked very closely with me when my cat had lymphoma. She even called me to update me on my cat's status even though she had lost her voice. Unfortunately, my cat didn't make it, but my heart was warmed when they sent me a sympathy card.
MPH is reasonably priced and they have helped me out on numerous occasions. They have always been very honest about the cost and they have even helped me out with donated items.
I have always left MPH with the feeling that they really care about me and my pets.
I just had a great first experience with mission pet hospital. After living almost 2 years in San Francisco, my dogs have finally found a vet in the city! When I drove into the Mission, I thought of going into the free parking the receptionist mentioned to me, but there was plenty of metered parking so I parked almost right in front of their location. As I walked in, the "hospital" felt more like a house. There is a small waiting room and reception area in the front with appointment rooms along the main lobby. Everyone I came into contact with here was friendly and obvious animal lovers. Our new vet, Dr. Lie had a natural ease about him and gave my two dogs thorough examinations. They each have different personalities, one being very friendly and hyper and the other more mellow and wary, and Dr. Lie was able to get through the examination quickly and pain-free. I also did not have my dogs' previous records which posed no problem at all. I was a bit worried that they wouldn't be seen because of this. All in all, a friendly and helpful staff to both dogs and people alike!
This is a no frills pet hospital. No points for ambiance, decor, or even roominess, but I don't mind that. I went looking for a good doctor for my fat cat, Donut, and not some crappy place with a posh waiting room.
Professional, efficient, and they all seem to genuinely care about the animals. Luckily I've only been in for routine exams, so easy in, easy out. I've been happy with the service each time.
Thanks to the Vets and the staff at MPH, our cat Sam is going to live. He has liver failure and is now being fed via a feeding tube. He seems to be improving everyday and thanks to the great people at this vet, has a great life ahead of him.
Thank you so much MPH!!
I have started a blog to document the healing process of sam

We found this place on Yelp, and now I am here yelping about it. I am glad we brought our cat here and I would recommend this place to any pet owner. The waiting room is small, we waited for 1/2 hour, but the staff was very nice and professional which is most important in my book. The doctor was very sweet with Luna...our fat 10 year old cat, and he was a joy to meet with. I would definitely go back here.
There is a private lot (free), pet meds and food, and like I said the staff (doctors and employees) were all fantastic.
Did you know epilepsy was common in chihuahuas? I sure as hell didn't.
Well, a few weeks ago at around 3:30 in the morning, to my horror and dismay, my dog Rocky had a seizure in the middle of the night. His whimpering woke me up, and in my haze, I began to realize that he was experiencing a seizure. He urinated, whimpered, then went into the full seizure. I held him and stroked him for the duration of the convulsions and was amazed at how similar this seizure looked to the human variety. After the violent convulsions, he entered the confusion phase, as his mouth foamed up. I massaged his little back through all this, and when he finally came to, he shat on the kitchen floor, wandered around the kitchen a minute, confused, then drank a half-gallon of water. He was then eager to go out back to pee.
Well, the good folks at Mission Pet Hospital have recommended a possible treatment, after we spend more time observing (read: waiting for more seizures) Rocky for the next few weeks. They took blood and were very careful and loving to my little guy. Amazingly, Rocky accepted his new doc, and even seems to like him. That's good, because I thought he was great.
So here I am, waiting for the next seizure... poor Rocky! The plus side of all this? Rocky has a great new vet.
Frankie loves Mission Pet Hospital. The staff is nice, attentive and for the most part knowledgeable - except for this one girl who shall remain nameless in case she recognizes Frankie.
Frankie's vet is this super nice and adorable young woman who talks to him like a baby, she calls him boo boo, cracks me up.
I found this place after I went to the SPCA and they tried to charge me $800 to have Frankie fixed!! Crazy.. it was 1/3 the price at MPH.
Anyone that's super good to my baby is a-ok with me!
I heart Mission Pet Hospital, cause Mission Pet Hospital hearts Lola.
Lola was spayed today and had a baby canine removed that didn't fall out.
She is doing fine and resting from surgery. Say a little prayer for her speedy recovery.
Update: 9/13/06
Lola is home and resting. BUT she is MAD! She is so pissed that both her daddies left her overnight in some place that made her hurt. Can you tell I am guilt ridden right now?
I feed her her favorite food, she looked the other way.
I gave her a kiss and she turned her head.
I gave her, her most favorite treat and she didn't touch it.
Oh Lola, feel better soon!
9/15/06
Lola is back to her old self again, giving kisses and waging her tail. She is even eating her treats. What I find amazing is that she has not needed one of those lamp shade thingys to keep her from licking her stitches, which is a comfort. I would hate to walk Lola around looking like the Flying Nun!
How interesting to read the other reviews......
I dont find the front desk to be disorganized at all. It's a small space and *always* very well staffed, so that clients are not kept waiting. The front desk folks know their routines and move through the day with ease and sensitivity. Each one of these people have shown such grace under pressure (the client's pressure, not the staff's)...
Yes, it's a small waiting room... a great people and animal watching space. A great space to sit quietly, to experience one odd slice of life passing by... and sometimes, sadly, slipping by as the animals come and go.
Yup, sometimes I have had to wait... those Darned emergencies... And I've brought in the emergencies too. To the woman whose dog was not spayed until later in the day.... there was a reason. Probably an emergency surgery to save someone's life.... and you would be given that same treatment, without hesitation. I have been given such consideration on more than one occasion.
Because I do rescue (wonder dog rescue) I have sat in that waiting room many times.... some surgeries, some euthanasias... sometimes just a check up. I've been a client off and on for about twenty two years... Dr. Holden did surgery on one of my doglets in the 80's.
"Impersonal" would never describe this hospital. It is a delicious and invaluable microcosm of life in this city.
I am so deeply grateful to the Doctors, Front desk staff and Vet techs at this hospital. They are GOOD at what they do......
Thank you, MPH!
p.s. to the "tapeworm" posters.... *You*, the owner, need to bring in a stool sample to test for tapeworm. Tapeworm is caused by fleas, and using a good flea product such as Advantage will eliminate both problems. I dont think it is fair to blame medical staff for failing to diagnose tapeworm if no stool sample was brought in.
We first went to Mission Pet Hospital for a routine check up. Everything was good. We next went to MPH after a knee injury. Ouch! (a torn ACL)
The doctor (who will remain nameless) prescribed Rimadyl for the injury and scheduled some testing. After visiting the vet and beginning the anti-inflammatory drugs Rudy starts vomiting and pooping blood. I call the MPH. "What could be happening I say"?. "Maybe he ate some garbage or drank dirty water and has Giardia" - they say. "He never does that" I say. They do not suggest discontinuing the drug.
I bring him back in and they run some very expensive tests for abdominal blockage and other things.
I go home and look at the Pfizer website. Rimadyl can have some very nasty bad side effects including DEATH in some animals. Side effects are vomitting and intestinal bleeding (pooping blood). I learned this not from the doctor who prescribed the drug, but from looking on the drug website. I call Pfizer. The Pfizer representative vet explains the side effects and wonders why the MPH vet did not explain possible bad side of the drug. This sounds like a drug reaction to her - discontinue use immediately she says. Pfizer even makes a tear sheet which they give to vets to distribute when they prescribe this drug because of the possible effects.
Because there was no explanation that it could possible be the drug causing the intestinal bleeding, Rudy continued on the drug for far longer than he should have, causing extensive intestinal bleeding, requiring hospitalization (at SFVS), and costing a couple thousand dollars in additional treatment including blood platelet transfusions.
MPH never admitted, yeah, we should have told you what to look for with this drug. Even later, they say, "the drug is as safe as aspirin, but oh, yeah, aspirin kills people too sometimes".
I think MPH is fine for routine pet care, and I know they see many of animals daily. I have heard good things about several of the vet's there. In Rudy's case though, they completely dropped the ball with a word of apology.
The vets are very friendly, informative, and patient. Willing to answer thoroughly every time I come in with a long list of questions (is she too thin? are her teeth looking okay? are those warts? no? you're sure? okay. okay, I believe you).
Just your local friendly pet hospital. And the prices are very fair, if you ask me. Sophie never leaves unhappy - they spoil her here I swear!
If you love your pets DO NOT take them here. I had taken my dog and cat here until my dog passed away. To make a long story short, the vets here use this place as a rotating door and are in this for money not consideration for your pet. They dont speak plain english and wont review your pets chart in detail until forced to do so even though you spend thousands of dollars here.
My cat was on their RD dry food diet and never lost any weight. When i started going to SPCA hosptial, they recommend good quality canned food. My cat lost almost 5 lbs in a couple months.
I have no complaints about MPH. I brought my new cat in for a reular check up. Here's the skinny:
$45 for visit
$20 for vaccine
$50 for FIV/Leukimea test
total: $115
The vets and other employees were all very nice and they used discretion, both in the waiting room and on the phone. 5 stars also because they have a free parking lot on 19th & Valencia.
I went with my friend for moral support when she had to take her cat in. It was a Friday afternoon and I think they were either overbooked or understaffed or both, because the small waiting room was packed with animals and their people. We saw the vet rather quickly, and after his very thorough yet gentle examination he recommended x-rays for the cat.
It took about an hour for the x-rays to get taken an analyzed (the vet explained they were down a tech person in the lab) but once the results were in the vet was very patient and clear in explaining the results of the x-ray (boring is good!) all the options that were available for the cat. My friend was able to make an informed decision and the vet was supportive all the way.
It was a two hour visit in total, which kinda sucked, especially because in the end the only thing for the cat was a "wait and see" approach. But like everyone has mentioned, the staff and the doctors were all very nice, sweet and professional. Plus we got to meet some amazing pets--a giant Irish Deer-Hound named "Cowboy" and a crazy little Pug with a lolling tongue whose name I didn't catch, were the highlights.
Hopefully the cat will start feeling better soon and we won't have to visit MPH again for anything serious.
-friendly people all around.
-knowledgeable dr.s and staff
-THEY LISTEN TO YOU! an explain things well to upset or worried humans.
-not just a business, they actually love animals.
-small place. you end up stepping on toes if you are not careful in the waiting room.
-room are not as squeaky clean as i would like.
-wish they were open longer+weekend hours.
-i have asked for the same dr. each time and they accommodate easily. he is in love with my cats--too cute.
-good prices on 'advantage'.
-they know me and my kitties when i come in. which is kinda neighborhood-y in a good way. just brought yoda in for his last round of kitten shots. two peeps behind the counter went "yoda!" like he was norm from cheers and commented on how much he has grown :-]
When I adopted my dog from Animal Control they give you a free vet visit and since my sister insisted that she loved this place I went
I have been very satisfied although my pet is never mad when we go in or leave. Even if she just had a shot or when they had to shave her face to weeks ago due to a bite and it was infected.
She just kept waggin her tail like nothing ( yeah she's a rider)
She was also diagnosed with a hip or leg problem and one of the vets asked me to bring her in again free of charge before I went to
the specialist so he can make sure it was not just a sprain
Now that's service
On CitySearch, there is a review of MPH by an angry customer who brought their pet in and heard the staff discussing a pot deal amongst themselves. I had to laugh when reading that, because it is very believable, yet perhaps it's part of MPH's charm. The front office staff does, at times, seem a bit disorganized and most everything seems to be done with archaic looking files rather than computer, but there's something about the place.
I think that something is that they really love your pets, and they do their best for you. It's very much a neighborhood business, with the comfort of an old shoe and lots of idiosyncracies. The staff get to know your pets, and they get to know you. Although vet care is always pretty costly, I never get the feeling that I'm being gouged there.
The only thing I'd change is that I'd make them more available for emergency care. Your pet can't stay overnight on weekends. It would be nice if they took AmEx, too.
Right now I'm pissed at these guys. Not because they were closed at 7pm when I called but because they didn't even have a voicemail giving me an emergency number. There are a million vets in this city and countless 24 hour emergency pet hospitals and they couldn't bother to have an after hours message referring their patients to one of them. I had to use yelp and luckily found a great vet who, though about close, took the time to refer me to an emergency hospital.
Also, on their "brand new website" they don't bother listing their hours.
So disappointed. I've used them for regular check ups, etc. but now, when I really needed them, here you go.
I was a little nervous about coming here after reading all the disparate reviews. Luckily, my cat only needed a checkup and no major surgery.
I found the waiting room to be on the smaller size but not uncomfortable (besides, what do you expect on Valencia Street? Do you see any big malls in the area?). The front desk staff were friendly and professional. There were no delays in seeing in a vet.
Hera was examined by Dr. Andrew Lie, who I found personable and friendly. Hera of course did not like him but it could have a lot to do with his groping her :-).
Overall, I was really impressed with the care and knowledge of the staff. I felt they really had the best interests of Hera at heart and weren't trying to get me to spend all sorts of money on optional procedures. Dr. Lie explained all the different vaccines for cats, what they were for, why they were important, so I could really understand their recommendations. I really appreciated that part.
I would definitely come here again.
We've been taking our dog Jackson to Mission Pet Hospital since we adopted him in early 2003, and we've always been pleased with the vets and vet techs. The office is somewhat barebones, a no-frills operation, but everything is clean and well taken care of. It's nice that we can buy our heartworm and flea and tick medication here, too.
Jackson has been seen by Dr. Gordon (for all of his past visits) and Dr. Scarlett (for his latest visit), and both have been friendly and knowledgeable, willing and able to answer questions. Thankfully, Jackson hasn't had any major problems, so we haven't needed to go to MPH for more than the usual yearly exams and maintenance shots, but I feel like the staff would come through for us if we needed them.
Tip: There are a few parking spots reserved for MPH in a lot on 19th right at Valencia. But be prepared to park on the street, probably at a meter, if that lot is unavailable for some reason (as it was today).
The entire staff at Mission Pet rulz! I've been there with my little canine buddy for neutering, vaccinations, check-ups, dog bites (on the dog, not me!), even for digestive problems and every time we receive top-notch care.
The staff! Can I say enough about their friendliness and generosity, squeezing my pooch in for an emergency visit?
Although Grendel's regular doc is Dr. Lie, Drs Scarlet and Gordon have worked their magic on him, too. I am so lucky to have such a wonderful clinic so close to home.
The first time we went, Grendel was shaking in his boots, but every time since then, he's totally relaxed. He obviously knows quality service when he sees it.
Normally, when a place has 72 reviews, most of them positive, I don't bother adding another. But Mission Pet Hospital deserves all the extra love it can get.
I started bringing my cat here two years ago upon the recommendation of the Yelp community. If you can look past the dated decor, the medical treatment and staff support is unparalleled. Dr. Gordon is amazing -- knowledgeable, down to earth, and incredibly caring.
The problem with vet treatment is that it costs a lot and it's hard to know if you're getting ripped off. I completely trust Dr. Gordon and the others at MPH. They gave me a *much* better price on a teeth cleaning for my cat than the SPCA (which, technically, is a non-profit). Plus, Dr. Gordon always reassures me that my tubby feline is overweight and not obese -- music to my ears!

My experience with MPH has been hit and miss, but mostly miss. They have more than once misdiagnosed ailments with both of my cats. The doctors don't seem all that knowledgeable either, or at last not interested in going in depth about conditions and possible causes for ailments.
Almost as bad, they have not been very helpful or accommodating, unlike the great folks at Presidio Way. Too bad MPH is in walking distance, but I think I'll deal with the hike across town to get to Presidio Way.
Curtis Press & Dave Gordon are awesome vets and the staff at MP are all terrific. I have been taking our pets to them for over 15 years. They are caring and engaged. They helped us work through a very ill cat and a very ill dog and held us when they had to put the beloved pets down. I wouldn't think of using another vet practice in SF. They take care of our two cats and Boston Terrier. If we have an emergency, we get squeezed in no matter what and they are always available for a phone call.
Dr. Andrew Lie is one of the best vets my cats have ever seen. He is calm, non-judgmental (unlike way too many vets and vet staff I have met over the years), and really clearly explains all the options. I appreciate his honesty about which tests or medications are most worthwhile. I have never felt like I was throwing money at a problem after listening to his advice (again, unlike at some other vets).
The only reason I can't give this place five stars is that I don't know the rest of the Mission Pet staff very well, and frankly a couple of them freak me out. But as long as Dr. Lie is working there, we'll be going there!
The space is indeed cramped, the parking (while free) is limited, and they are incredibly busy. The staff assistants has always been extremely kind. As for the vets, I have loved Dr. Bollich and Dr. Gordon-- both are knowledgeable and creative problem solvers. They strike the right balance for me: caring deeply for the animals but not over-treating them.
Mission Pet Hospital has acquired a number of new and caring Drs. since Dr. Holden has semi-retired.
I went through a VERY emotional time last December when, cooincidentally both my 13 year old cats developed fatal diseases within one week of each other and I had to euthanize both of them within that period time.
I worked mostly with Dr. Gordon, who, while I was under alot of stress, was very patient with my hysterics (at the time you might say I was going crazy), but he offerered me the strength to do what I had to do, that is euthanize both cats.
All the diagnostic tests were very thorough, and when I couldn't make a decision, Dr. Gordon helped guide me (along with Dr. Holden) as to what my cats' options were. Sometimes when you are grieving you tend to want to blame something or somebody, and often I found myself getting emotional and blaming the Drs. for what was happening, but there was noone really to blame. It was a cooincidental hardship.
While at first, I lashed out the compassionate people that treated my cats as they were new, and I didn't really know them, in retrospect, now that I have my head back on straight, I realize how so out of their way they went, Dr. Holden, Dr. Gordon and their wonderful staff to get me through this ideal.
I feel very at home coming to MIssion Pet Hospital - I have been going there for many years - and truly hope that I can make a graceful transition from Dr. Holden treating my cats to Dr. Gordon. He did more for me AND me cats, and went out of his way to get both my cats AND me through this.
I find him to be compassionate, sensitive, and I hope we can work together for years to come and get to know my 2 new cats. I plan on going to Mission Pet Hospital as I always have for years to come.
I catsit in the Bay Area too, and I have the owners fill out a little cat instruction resume, and I wasn't surprised to see that most of my clients also go to Mission Pet Hospital. They really love what they do too. I found that out last December.
Having my Drs. know and engage with my cats as well as myself, is very important to me. It is a two-way street and trust is an important issue.
