I absolutely hate Safeway. I avoid it like the plague. Mission Meat Market is the antithesis! It's hard to find selection like this and when you do, it's often quite expensive (Molly Stone's or Lunardi's). On the other side of the spectrum are those sketchy butcher shops in the Mish or Lower Haight where everything is sticky and the meat sits out on ice. Yuck!
How about a complete change of pace? Mission Meats is incredibly inexpensive and serves up very high quality meats at an immaculately clean, friendly counter. You can easily feed a house full of hungry BBQ fans without breaking the bank here. The staff is knowledgeable and welcoming.
The only drawback is that they close at 6 so you need to plan your trips here.
This place isn't your fancy shmancy upscale meat market. This place is your down home all business we cater towards people who really cook meat market.
They carry all kinds of off cuts that are used for stews and stocks as well as the usual steaks, pork chops, and lamb chops. As well you can get smoked ham hocks, two different kinds of tripe, tongue, etc.
The place is also nice, clean, and well run.
A cook's paradise!
