One of the Business' Favorite Reviews What's This?
I love Mission Fish & Poultry. I can walk out with a high quality, fresh. sushi-grade piece of fish for a couple of bucks. This is one of the best places to buy fresh Seafood in San Francisco.
The butchers who work here are real, traditional butchers who know about the meat they're cutting. They are just so warm and friendly, with great suggestions for preparation and interesting recipe ideas.
I like to wander in here, see what's fresh, chat with the guys behind the counter, and plan my meal accordingly. What a nice alternative to Safeway.
Let me reiterate that they only sell sushi-grade fish here. Nothing is frozen or has been sitting out on ice all day. The place is immaculately clean and the selection is fantastic. Beats the hell out of Safeway!
When they opened in the mid-70's we lived a few blocks away. We have since moved several times, but we always come back here for our fish and poultry. Neighborhood restaurants and fire fighters shop here, so that should tell you something.
Some items that we frequently buy: beautifully-filleted and fairly-priced petrale sole, jumbo wild prawns, one pound boxes of salt cod (bacalao), duck legs, Diestel turkey, Fulton Valley chickens, chicken and apple breakfast links.
Love that Bob. There's not a friendlier or more helpful guy around.
We live (well, I do) in San Francisco, so finding high quality food isn't that hard. We have a dizzying array of markets and specialty stores, to the extent that one might never leave the city's limits and still eat like royalty every day, assuming one can cook.
When I discovered that my refrigerator freezer could get down to 0 degrees Fahrenheit, I was tickled, as this is that magic number where food will keep "indefinitely", and I could keep food in bulk in the freezer. I have a whole geeky system worked out where I use colorful laminated gift bags to sort my frozen meats, and it makes planning and cooking meals much, much easier.
When my yellow (poultry) and blue (seafood) bags get low on supplies, I make a dash to Mission Market Fish & Poultry for a restocking. It is clean, airy, and the food is fresh, sustainable, and excellent quality. Bob, who has worked there for decades, is very friendly and knowledgeable.
The quality of the food, especially for the prices, is outstanding, but as I've said many times before, service is key, and it's the service that earns this place all 5 of my stars. Bob will cheerfully individually wrap my orders of salmon steaks or chicken breasts, making the preparation of meals for 1, 2, or 6 people a very straight forward process.
One small caution to newcomers. If you come in from the Mission Street entrance, keep walking towards the back, as it's a bit tucked away in the back of a mall that feels a little like a ride at Epcot Center.
I do most of my shopping at the Heart of The City farmers market, but their selection of seafood is lacking (if you don't want to gut/skin/debone your fish). Because of this I have been searching for a great meat market in the mission for about 5 years, so when I read the reviews here I was so excited to visit Mission Market.
It was a great disappointment.
I went here at 5:00pm on a Saturday. There was hardly any selection because they were packing up the meat early. o_O? I would see something i wanted, look somewhere else for a second, and the thing I wanted would be gone. The chicken breasts were very expensive. 2 breasts for about 7 dollars!!!?? The chicken was good, but it's only chicken and not any better than chicken anywhere else. I also wanted to get some Cod, however it looked as if it had started to desiccate, yuck.
The search continues...
Been going here for years, I'm surprised I forgot to write a review.
They offer super fresh chicken & fish at surprisingly modest prices. It feels so good to eat well/healthy and not spend a whole paycheck in the process. :)
My only thing is that I wish they were opened Sundays since that's my errand running day.
I got really fresh talapia to make fish tacos for my Miss Universe party.
Service was nice. Price was right. Quality was high. Fish was tasty. Oh, and Miss Venezuela won... again.
Everything was very fresh and clean. Prices were very reasonable, and service was knowledgeable, extremely quick, and friendly. I was in and out in maybe 5 minutes tops - it took me ten times longer just to get there! Well worth the trip though - I got a big load of sashimi grade fish that all tasted fresh and clean, high quality.
I will definitely be coming back to this place for any meat-fish-poultry related needs. I honestly cannot think of anything that would make this place any better than it already is. Highly recommend this place to anyone that eats meat/fish. :)
I just read a book about eating sustainable seafood and was not looking forward to going back to the fish mongers. Although I was now armed with the Monterey Bay Aquarium fish guide I knew I would have to ask a lot of questions and I wasn't sure if a) they would appreciate this 3rd degree and what if b) they didn't know and I would have to resort to Whole Foods for fish?
But you know what, these guys really know what's going on. They were happy to answer all my questions and were super patient. No attitude at all. Plus they know their stuff and will tell you where they get their fish as well as how it was caught. And if they don't know, they'll tell you. Great guys.

How nice to have a proper meat market run by butchers who can recommend different meat and also cut… Read more »
Located in the the Mission district, this fish, poultry and meat market is the real deal. The quality is superb -- everything fresh, reasonable and sold by people who are knowledgeable about not only the product you are thinking about purchasing /eating, but also issues of sustainability, eco-friendly issues and great recipes. Bob (he's my guy) is second generation butcher. He's accessible, smart and funny. His colleagues are also terrific.
I'm primarily a vegetarian, but when I feel the urge for fish or poultry, this is where I head. Just recently, I bought fresh sardines there that I grilled. They were so delicious, ... [sigh]
And, they wrap your produce in brown paper, for heaven sake.
Love these folks...They are a treasure.
I wrote a bad review for Mission Market describing live turtles and I am very sorry b/c I HAD THE WRONG PLACE...
Bob, who called me from Mission Mkt was really nice about my bad, misplaced review too, which shows major respect for the people and maturity. No turtles here, but I do know where they were and I will correct.
thanks bob for being kind, when I'm sure you were mad about the wrong review. PEACE.
Dear San Francisco,
Here's how Mission Fish went down:
2 p.m. last Thursday afternoon. Feeling down in the dumps. Work killing me- its an early, sinus/engineer headache kind of day. Battling the last of the Santa Clara- San Francisco commuters- the 101 N. is packed like ugly metal sardines from the 280 splitter. I make a mad dash for the Cesar Chavez exit where I Pray no one else has had this grand plan. Unfortunately, I am foiled and there is line 50 strong on the exit ramp. Dejected, sweating, and coughing like an old dog, I manage to realize a right turn onto Cesar Chavez and Valencia. The house is empty and I know groceries are a necessity. The boyfriend "needs" luncheon meats for "school" and I "need" dinner for the next couple of nights. My Lucca Ravioli company comes into view and I decide we will have delicious clams and pasta for supper. 76 dollars and 3 suppers and 1 week worth of lunches later, Pete, my fellow Greek directs me to the Mission Market without a moment's hesitation for clams (or whatever is fresh). There I am met by the jovial Bob (who thought I was someone else but no matter, his excitement was genuine), and Rafael. Rafael takes my painfully annoying questions about locations and freshness like a pro. He knows his fish, his clams, and his kalamarakia.. Oh my sweet Carla Negroponti the squid! It was amazing. Marinated and grilled over fresh pasta. I also bought two red snapper filets and a pound of fresh clams. My total bill was obscene- 11 dollars and 27 cents. Rafael then showed me the poultry section and told me about the sweet little set-up for the free-range chickens. He promised me Distel Turkey at Thanksgiving and fresh fish every day. This is it, folks. I beg you not to shop here so I can have a little dinner left in the case when I Return each night from The 'Clara (feeling a little homicidal from the hot, stinking traffic). I bought the same little squids down in the Ferry building and about 8 scallops and my bill was 28 dollars. This is you know- the place. I am stoked I don't have to brave the fish stalls for the cheap prices. Each fish has a sign as to his COO- that's country of origin fo short...I could choose between farmed and wild-caught items...and there were variety of each. I can't wait to try whole fish- on the grill. GET YOUR OMEGA-3 ON, SAN FRANCISCO!
Love,
Phenomena
Very interesting place. Its deep inside this kinda eerie little shopping mall with all types of good shops (produce, taquerias, flowers, candy, etc.) The meat and seafood counter is an absolute pleasure to shop at. I expected a large bill after buying a few different kinds of meats and some shrimp, but was pleasantly surprised at the very reasonable price.
Kinda makes me feel like an idiot going to a restaurant and paying so effin much just for one meal that I can probably make myself with all the available fresh food in this city for a tenth of the price. But anyway, I look forward to frequenting this place and Sun Fat Seafood right down the road regularly to make sure I'm spoiled as a teenage pop star.
Minus one star for the guy that didn't wash his hands between palming my breast and swiping my card. Otherwise, not even the occasional fly could knock this lively, spacious mecca of meat down the scale. Need some seafood stock? Buy a 1 lb fish head for a buck. Any cut of cow, including most organs? Check. Live seafood on the right, poultry in its own case waaaay in the back. They even stock rubs, spices, and sauces so you can really season on a whim. The price is right too. I paid for 4 chicken breasts, thought it was a good deal, then got home and realized they were DOUBLE breasts. Score. I would, however, NOT buy anything here that didn't require cooking (read: cold cuts and sliced cheese on the far left of the counter just inches from raw pork). Overall quite stellar. Even if I had to rub my hand and my debit card with alcohol gel when I got home.
Absolutely one of the best places to buy meats and fish in San Francisco. The long counters house a delectable assortment of meats: plump little hens, rabbits, turkey legs, organic chickens, duck and on the other side of the room you get your new york cuts, filets, ribeyes, oh my. This fish is also beautiful.
The presentation is exsquisitely clean. The prices are very very reasonable. The butchers are helpful and knowledgeable. So combine these qualities with the sheer variety and quick turnover and you have a no brainer here.
I come here to drool and think about what I will make for dinner.
If you live near here-- there is absolutely no reason to go anywhere else! especially don't go to Whole Foods for ridiculous premiums on meats that come with an overly marketed, snobby ass ambiance. Do it right at Mission Market.
Other nearby options? Try El Gallinita for carne asada cuts. El Chico has nice house made chorizo.
During my tenure as a Program Intern, I was informed that I would have to purchase chicken. Boneless, skinless, organic, free-range chicken for a coconut curry. As usual, I did a quick scan of all the places I knew...and came up with Costco. I racked my brain, and even contemplated flying in my own chickens from a farm in Wisconsin. However, after Yelping a few times, I stumbled upon MIssion Market.
Bob, the purveyor of all things traveling by land and sea (well, feet and fins), is an older fella who takes such pride in making sure my order is always correct. I call him up, he says "The usual? Yes ma'am, we have them here! It will be ready when you come in!" I stop by, am enthralled by his other products (sadly, my pocketbook is shrinking by the day), and am greeted by this 20 something man who blinks his long, long eyelashes. Bob comes by, I whip out my credit card, and in 5 minutes flat, I'm in and out with a cooler full of breasts.
And did I mention he gives free ice?
P.S. - Bob, you're the man!
*Wheelchair accessible from the front of the store. There's a ramp.
dEfintely the best place to buy meat in the area. There's a great selection, it's cheaper than safeway and whole foods, and it's not nearly as sketchy as some of the other Mission Street hole-in-the-wall meat markets.
really, no reason to go anywhere else. Only problem is I'm not sure about organics and all around quality of the meat and the hours are lame- it closes by 6pm daily.
I have been shopping at Mission Market since they opened. This is one of the best markets in San Francisco to buy Seafood and Poultry. I think that almost all of my Thanksgiving Turkeys in the last 30 years have come from here and I think they were one of the first markets in the city to carry Free Range Turkeys and Diestel Farms birds[way before Whole Foods even existed]and their prices are fair, none of the huge rip off mark ups like some other markets. The guys at the counter are REAL San Franciscans and they really know their stuff, unlike the yelper here who complained about their brisket...they don't carry meat!!
This is a wonderful meat market. You can get duck leg for your cassoulet, a rabbit for roasting, turkey necks, every kind of cut of pork and beef. Attracts gourmets and day-laborers alike ( perhaps with even some cross-over!)
There's a little produce store inside, which is good for on the go but is otherwise thinly stocked with dusty cans of products from South America.
First of all, the mission market in general is a neat find in SF. I've been to many mercado-style places like this in LA, and in San Antonio, but didn't expect to find one here.
The meat/fish/poultry counter in the back of the market has an excellent selection, and is not aimed at attracting yuppies, so the prices and service are nice and unpretentious. I recommend combining a trip here with lunch at El Perol, a little Peruvian place just next to it.
Very reasonable prices, and the dungeness crab was fresh (200 pounds boiled the morning I bought crab). Great spot.
This maze-like little mall is as close as you come to Tijuana without leaving San Francisco. Full of independent Mexican, Salvadoran and Vietnamese restaurants, veggie and meat markets, a beauty salon, a flower shop, organized around an indoor courtyard with painted tile floors and walls and ceilings painted everywhere with quirky murals, street scenes, oceans, fields, decorative lights, starscapes. It's noisy, kids are running around, crooner and mariachi versions of popular pop songs spill out of the little stores.
Good times, good times.
This place has an amazing selection of meats at very reasonable prices. We took home a beautiful slab of Salmon and it was not only really fresh but tasty. After it was poached, of course. But we'll definitely make Mission Market Fist & Poultry our "go to" place if ever we need a butcher.
I love these guys, not only are they knowledgable about their products, but they are folks I look forward to chatting with while I wait for someone to butterfly my lovely 5lb. chicken. I always order my organic Thanksgiving Turkey from MIssion Market ( in time to brine it for at least 24 hours) and I have never had that dry dull bird that requires gravy. Don't get me wrong--I love some gravy in my life, but it shouldn't be the cover-up for dry turkey.
Oh, I think I should mention that if you are looking for red meat, stay
away from the opposite counter!
Good quality meats at ridiculously low prices gets this place 4 stars. Why not 5? They are missing a couple cuts which I have to travel elsewhere for (like brisket) and I can find better fish around the corner at Sun Fat. For most of your basic meats, though, this is the place!
Bob the Butcher, as I told him, is my new best friend. Being a "raw feeder" of my dog, I'm always on the prowl for odd things like chicken feet, organs, interesting cuts of meat that most humans have lost track of. They have it all, and whether the meat is for my family or my pooch, this is full service like I have been searching for.
This place is a gem!!!! I will always come back for the fresh cracked crab among other things. Bob, the owner of the Seafood counter is so friendly & knowledgeable. As a matter of fact everyone behind the counter is great! The prices are very very reasonable, never overpriced & everything is always fresh! I would never shop anywhere else in the city for the best in fish, meat & poultry!
I went here for my first time last weekend. It was a bit out of my usual area, but well worth the trip. I wanted an entire side of salmon and the butcher cut it for me and it cost me less than half it would have at the supermarket. While he was preparing my salmon I got to take a look around and they have a phenomenal selection of meats and seafood. Also, the butchers are extremely knowledgeable and friendly. I cooked my salmon on Sunday and I have to say it was the best piece of salmon I have ever bought - period. This is a great place to get really high quality meat and you can't beat the service or the prices.
This place if fantastic. Since my husband and I live not too far way in Noe, this is a weekly destination for us. The prices are great, the staff is helpful, and the quality of the fish and poultry is awesome.
Inexpensive Fresh Fish! Knowledgeable butcher/fishmonger!
Freshest seafood around; very friendly and helpful.
I needed chicken, without the skin. Appauled by the high prices and low quality of Safeway (which incidently is in chambles, on Market) I struck out to find a viable alternative. Having had so much luck in the neighborhood with finding good vegetables at even better prices it was time to move on to the protein. Well, I have found my go to place. The chicken was really amazing, which is amazing in itself since most chicken from the grocery store (i.e. Safeway) doesn't taste like anything. This chicken tasted like chicken....brilliant. And it was a fraction of the price charged at Safeway. Did I mention I hate Safeway?
The meat variety at this place is HUGE. Filipinos can get fresh Pig's Blood for dinuguan, rabbit meat, oxtails, and just about every other kind of meat available for human consumption. Take a number, it's really popular with the locals.
