Listen up, dudes. There have been BIG CHANGES at the Mission Groceteria. So big that they have eclipsed all the good material that I was saving up for an update to my original review. Those sordid--but now somewhat irrelevant--events had to do with a former employee, my roommate, a boat ride, and some cultural misunderstanding. BUT WHO CARES because now there are new owners, shiny metal shelves, a new range of yuppy-friendly gourmet products, and some serious Friendly Attitude.
Back on New Year's Eve, I was startled out of a mid-evening disco nap by a loud explosion. I guess it was just some fireworks on the street, but as I popped my head to investigate I remember seeing these dudes in front of the Groceteria frantically assembling a huge collection of shelving and refrigeration equipment. The commotion at the store continued for a few days and climaxed one night when my roommate burst in--proudly declaring that we could now purchase kombucha from the above mentioned dudes.

So. Basically the deal with these dudes (whose names I think are Omar and Muhammad) is that they are STOKED ON LIFE and are really really grateful for Absolutely Everything. They are especially pumped about their families, their good fortune, and about having every available variety of Ritter Sport (see old review). They have put a lot of work into the place, and stock a lot of cool tasty items that I like, such as Ritter Sport. But beyond the more treat-like products, they seem to have smartly filled out the shelves with the things a corner store really needs to have, things like vanilla extract and whipping cream. These are things that I usually don't check my own supply of before I start making cookie batter or something at nine pm.
Well. Phew. I really need some time to let all this newness sink in a little bit before I form a real opinion about this place. But I will say that things are looking really good so far, and I am now much more likely now to actually go in this place for more than a soda or a beer. I'd really like to try one of their sandwiches, too, especially since my recent Montana holiday meat epiphany (see forthcoming review of the S. family's Christmas dinner). All I'll say for now is, keep up the 'tude, dudes! Positive Neighborhood 2K9! Peace!

i wont be the one to bring down the curve. This place has a great beer collection and has even special ordered my BFs favorite beer when he mentioned it! they are super nice an have the funniest sayings on their outside chalkboard. They have a great selection of staples, not the usual weird stuff you see at other corner stores that have an inch of dust on them but real quality goods! and the service is great, I always  walk out of there smiling and thinking how nice they are. best in the neighborhood!

Can this side of the Mission get any better?! I've lived at the corner of 23rd and Harrison for almost 4 years now and the neighborhood has gone through quite the transformation. Humphry Slocombe, Sugarlump, L's, soon-to-be Sushi Bistro, and now the new and improved Mission Groceteria! My roommate used to play poker hands to score free ice cream with the old owner, which was cute, but the place had a bit of a sketchy, grungy vibe to it. Now, this corner store is squeaky clean with superb offerings of wine, beer, and your basic pantry needs. Sometimes they offer a buy one, get one free bottle of wine special. The only thing it's missing is eggs! I have yet to find a corner store in the Mission that has eggs. What's the deal?

This is everything a corner store should be. Mohammed is the main draw. - He is so nice he is practically radiating sunshine. The store is clean and well stocked and has the perfect variety of merchandise: soy milk, organic juices, baking supplies, - and an awesome selection of beer. Seriously. The beer selection is amazing. And get a sandwich!! They are huge, delicious, prepared on the spot, and under-priced. I want to scoop up the whole store and give it a great big hug.

The Mission Groceteria has always been awesome. Grumpy Joe used to gamble with my friend for vitamin water. But now things have changed. They now stock Dogfish Head beers. This is an amazing brewery from Delaware that is not well represented in the small establishments around town. I picked up some Midas Touch and 90 Minute IPA. Muhammad at the register was extremely nice and excited about the neighborhood and life. This place is definitely worth the 1 block stroll off the 24th strip.

Mohammed and Omar are awesome!!  They are the most dedicated, kindest store owners, always friendly, always inquisitive and I hope really great things happen to them.   They have reasonably late hours and are stock filled with useful stuff (I think I saw dr brommers soap there once?) .  These guys work hard to earn your business and they definately are a great addition to the neighrborhood!

Yep, second five star review this place is going to get. Stellar sandwich. Freshly cut turkey, toasted bun, loaded with lettuce, tomato, pickles and mustard. If the guy behind the counter really is Grumpy Joe, he was far from grumpy. Nice guy, even threw in some potatoes he was making up.

I love this place.  It's higher priced than some other places, but they have tons, they're close, and Grumpy Joe is hilarious.  And Grumpy Joe's sandwiches are delicious.
