I'd be tempted to say Mishi's is as good as ever. But it actually gets better and better. There's a special menu coming up for Valentine's weekend that I can't wait to try.
I've got an advantage: I've seen them making their strudels and I know that there's actually love that goes into every single one of them. It's a happy kitchen and that translates into a happy cafe.
It's more than the food, though. Mishi's, in its four years in business, has become a real center of Downtown San Pedro. I can't go in there without running into friends.
Mishi's is on my list of places I must take visitors.2 Previous Reviews: Show all »

1 strudel, 2 strudels, 3 strudels...FLOOR.
Oh my GAWD! This place is so delectably tastycakes. Really, everything here is delicious. It's so f'ing cute! Like Hungarian country house cute. The owners are super sweet and friendly.
I would have given it 5 stars, but I think Mishi's taunts me. Sometimes I race home from work to try to make it here before it closes, and it's WAAAAH WAAAAH...closed. I think also it closes before the sign posts that it closes. I think it should be open later...because after ingesting 823782837 calories at dinner, I *always* have room for Mishi's! -

I see a lot of 4 and 5 star ratings for this place on here....but.....I wasn't impressed. A friend suggested we drive over the bridge and try this place out.
I was surprised to not see even 1 other car parked in the 2-3 block area of 7th street around this place, and this was on a Friday, with the Farmer's Market going on just a block away on 6th. (It felt and looked like an abandoned 1940's city)
The female employee that greeted us was friendly enough. The decor was sort of what you would expect an old breakfast restaurant in Big Bear to look like.
I had a piece of the blueberry strudel, my friend had the blueberry/cheese strudel. It was just "OK". I thought it was EXTREMELY overpriced for what you get. $5.00 for a small piece of so-so strudel...not my idea of fun.
Fresh & Easy is now baking their own pastries in the stores...and for $3.99 you can get 4 of the most wonderful apple turnovers you've ever had.
No thanks Mishi's.....not for me. -

Cute, cute, cute place that automatically relaxes you and makes you feel at home! I haven't had much strudel in my life, and I don't know how Hungarian strudel differs from German or Austrian strudel, but I know that Mishi's strudels are wonderfully flaky and delicious, without being overly sweet. I would come here just for the charm and neighborhood friendliness alone, but the strudel makes it a must.
It feels like you're sitting in someone's very-inviting home, which just happens to have a bakery counter filled with an assortment of treats. They have a wide selection of sweet fruit strudels and a few savory strudels. They also have many other menu items that I did not get to try, which I will be back for. They also have quite a variety of teas on hand; there are so many, in fact, that some of them blend into the background, as if they were just part of the charming ambience.
I can attest to the deliciousness of the apricot and cheese, the blueberry and cheese, and the beef strudels. My friends and I gave each other small servings of each to taste, and I was left wanting more. One strudel was a nice light breakfast snack with tea. I can imagine that one savory strudel and one sweet strudel would be a perfectly filling breakfast combo, without being too much.
My friend and I had a pot of tea to share. It was really cute, because the tea pot came out filled with hot water, and we got two separate cups with two separate loose leaf tea bags of the slightly sweet, autumn-flavored Wedding Tea (their most popular loose leaf tea), along with tea bag rests. Little touches like this amuse and delight me. :)
Not a bad reason to go to San Pedro. I want to try their Hungarian Goulash and get some strudel to go next time. I plan on going back with my dad soon! -

Mishi's strudels are AMAZING!!!! I've never had strudel as good as this! Every time I have family or friends in town, I take them here and they are always impressed! The ONLY bummer, I have to report, is that the last time I came in, they were out of vanilla ice cream - how a strudel joint can allow that to happen is beyond me! Their blueberry strudel just really sings with that scoop of vanilla on it, but oh well, I still love them, and we'll be back soon!

This is a cute and cozy little cafe. We had the best cup of coffee and strudel, EVER! The person next to us was eating a crepe that had vegetables, cheese and bacon. It looked yummy!!! We will be back many, many times.

With how high this place comes up in Yelp searches for things to do in San Pedro, we slammed on the brakes and parked after passing it on one of those looking-for-a-new-place-to-check-out-or-eat sort of drives my boyfriend and I tend to do during uneventful weekends.
On entering, you get either the feeling of being at a Victorian-ish tea room or your grandmother's house. Old furniture, table clothes, tea pots, and doilies everywhere. We felt really out of place in our regular street clothes among the chatty, older clientele there that afternoon, and opted to sit outside after ordering at the counter.
The boyfriend got the beef strudel ($6). I got the spinach one ($6). Not very familiar with Hungarian-style strudel, we were eager to try. The beef was pretty decent, although the meat was a bit dry. The sour cream they give you helps.
The spinach, however, was quite good, but it seemed like it was really trying to be a Greek spanakopita with feta cheese and filo dough. Pretty good, but you don't want to eat it outside like we did. Anything slightly more than a light breeze was enough to blow the flaky crust off the plate. -
Review from Ciara G.
Mishi's lucked out with getting them 3 stars as I have not had many strudels so I kind of feel bad going with the "Meh I've experienced better".
I was born and raised in the town dubbed "Where the Ghetto Meets the Sea" by Hugo C. and finally set out and spread my wings around age 19. I do not remember seeing this place, hearing about this place or anything about this place until Yelp came around oh but 10 years later. Crazy to have bookmarked a Pedro place.
I had an hour to kill before my hair appointment just up the street at JM Salon on a Saturday afternoon. I remember Mishi's being in the area so I decided a sweet treat would be perfect to start off my day.
I walked in and was kindly greeted by the gal behind the counter. I ordered my Apple Strudel and a cup of coffee. My strudel was delivered in a few minutes time warm and smelling delicious. I wasn't impressed I will say with it at all. Not sure if I ordered the wrong one but I felt safe going the route of the apple insted of with something new. It was warm and fresh and you can tell it was made with love. I just couldn't pin point what I didn't like about it but I knew for sure I wasn't digging it.
Next time I'm going out on a limb and getting the blueberry cheese strudels that HC yelped about.Listed in: I'm taking you to the P-House

Asked my usual question...they're answer: "our strudels are pretty awesome." Understatement of the day.
The Apple Strudel took me somewhere...and I liked it! Nice citrus tart hint in the fruit. The flaky crust reminded me of authentic baklava.
I'd eat here again and again and again (I'd be the happiest 900-pounder you'd ever meet.) -

I was down for a First Thursday and caught some singers performing at Mishi's; that actually what got me in door. There were a few student singers putting on a performance of classic opera and other songs. The waitress actually chimed in with Dream a Little Dream; fantastic, although I wished she would have sung a little bit louder since some people were talking at the same time.
I had the Cherry Strudel and it was pretty good: Your basic cherry filling inside of a puff pastry crust. The buddy that I was with said that the macaroon ad coffee was excellent.
Bottom line is that the strudel is decent, and the owner is obviously involved with supporting the local artistic community, which always scores high points with me.
I'll be back! -

I think Mishi's might be the cutest place I've been to in the US. I'm a complete Euro-phile, so when I was greeted by a friendly Hungarian man upon entry, I was so stoked! You feel like you've been transported to a European eatery at Mishi's and I'm in love with it.
There is a small amount of seating inside, and since I was with a small group for a my mom's birthday, they immediately made accommodations for us. I can't get over how friendly the man was...just adorable! I ordered a latte (as every good European place should, they have an espresso machine). We decided to all split a few sweet strudels. Apple, blueberry, and chocolate. Oh man were these good! Flaky and delicious. I'm not usually much of a fruit-flavor person - complete chocoholic - but the fruit ones here we the bomb. We were all pleased to take a break from work here in the morning and enjoy ourselves.
I just read on their website that they have frozen strudels that you can buy and take home. Think I'll be doing this very soon!Listed in: Breakfast Bites

"Here are your blueberry cheese strudels. They've just been rolled, so you can't get them any fresher than this." I have to say that I'm glad Angie N. tried talking me into giving Mishi's another shot; these strudels were straight bangin'.
During our visit, we overheard that Mishi's had been a recent victim of a middle-of-the-night smash and grab that occurred the night before. Sadly, a mess was made and items of value were taken. It's always heartbreaking to hear that a community institution is burglarized, and this is no different.
I seriously encourage local fans of Mishi's to pay them a visit, nibble on a delicious strudel and show your support for this admirable mom & pop shop.Listed in: San Pedro: Where The Ghetto…

Gori S., her jerk of a dog and I were at the Art Walk and decided we needed some dessert. I was terribly excited about having strudel and left Gori and the aforementioned dog outside. Inside, to my delight, an elderly man was playing keyboard. The decor was cute and homey and reminded me strongly of a place I loved as a kid.
The youngish guy behind the counter was very nice, and more importantly, patient, as I ran back and forth out the front door to show Gori the menu, ask if she wanted to eat outside on the patio, wanted ice cream, etc. We settled on the cherry/cheese strudel, and it was a marvelous decision: sweet and creamy and flaky. We looked over the menu and ID'd the other things we wanted to eat. We will definitely be back, and I hope to get to enjoy the ambiance next time. -

Mishi's is the perfect place for an afternoon snack. The strudels are tasty and flaky and come in a wide variety of flavors. It's a tiny shop though, so there is limited seating. We were lucky to come at a time that it was fairly empty and had no problem getting a table.
I would recommend coming early-ish in the day though. When we came in the mid-afternoon, they were out of several flavors already so we didn't get our first choices. -

Definitely a spot everyone in the San Pedro area should try out. It's not worth a SUPER long drive to come here, but they definitely have some tasty strudels and other good looking pastries that are worth about a 30min-1hr drive!
It's a very cute small bakery/cafe, the prices aren't too steep, and the service is friendly. The atmosphere inside is kind of girly which I really liked, and it was nice and quiet inside as well, with no wait or long line.
I would come back again, but only if I'm visiting San Pedro for other attractions, not just the bakery alone. Also! It's near the Korean Friendship Bell and Sunken City, so you can take your strudels there to enjoy, but it's best to eat them fresh in the cafe, when they're still crispy and flaky, and yes, they'll warm the pastries back up for you.
I'll be back to try more stuff, but so far, the blueberry cheese strudel was pretty good, but not OMG SO HEAVENLY good, just good. Maybe I'm not that big of a fan of strudels. -

I grew up eating my Grandmother's apple, cherry, poppyseed, cheese, and cabbage retes. Despite my Mother, my 3 sisters and me watching her countless times as she tried to teach us the art of making the dough, then pulling it out so thin that you'd be able to read newspaper print through it, none of us has been able to even approach replicating the heavenly "strudel".
After a trip to Hungary 2 years ago, I was finally able to have my husband of 19 years experience true retes, but only at the "Retes Var" (Retes Castle in English) in the Castle Hill district of Budapest. The other strudels I saw and ate were heavy crusted things not worthy of the name "retes".
I found Mishi's on the Web and ordered three 17 inch units for a family reunion that we were having (cherry, apple and poppyseed) and you should have heard the shrieks of surprised delight when I brought the platter of warmed retes out after dinner. The 25+ year drought of our family's wandering in the Valley of No Retes was over.
Shipping costs through Priority Mail were extremely reasonable, the retes itself is practically worth it's weight in gold, and the retes was at least as fabulous, and maybe even better, than both the Retes Var's and my Grandmother's retes. The retes was packed so well that it arrived through the postal service completely intact.
Life is full of miracles of all sizes. Finding Mishi has been the fulfillment of a dream that was dying in me. But if there are at least 2 people in the World who still know how to make retes, then there is hope that at least this almost lost art can be taught and passed on to someone who has the knack to learn this "rocket science" culinary art.
By the way, it's pronounced: roll the "r" slightly, then a sound that's a cross between "ree and ray", and "tesh" - like John Tesh. There! Now they'll think you're Hungarian! -

There should be a sixth star for this place! I first ate here on a First Thursday Art Walk night when I randomly ran into friends, a common occurrence! We all decided to check out Mishi's which was brand new at the time. What can I say, it was LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT!...and first taste, and first sound. They had live music and the most amazing food. Ever since then I'm a regular on First Thursdays and whenever I want to take a friend to an amazing little place that won't break my budget Mishi's is at the top of my list! They are usually only open late for First Thursdays, but their hours have been expanding lately.
The sweets are ridiculous, but they come in a close second to the savory crepes and strudel. By now, I'm sure I've had everything on the menu. My favorite is the cabbage strudel! Hey, don't knock it until you try it! Their hungarian goulash is so flavorful. I can smell the difference the smoked paprika makes! They are always adding to their menu. The last time I was there we had noodles that were home made and amazing! What an unexpectedly great flavor, too. I would have never thought that cottage cheese would go so good warm with noodles!
If you haven't tried this place you are missing out! -

After a disappointing Mother's Day dinner, we decided to venture outside the restaurant for dessert. Handy yelp app to the rescue! Just a couple of blocks down was Mishi's. They guy behind the counter was really friendly and took his time with each customer. The place was quaint with a homey feel. It reminded me of my childhood Sunday dinners at Po' Folks because they had those wooden puzzle games for the kids.
I got the blueberry & cheese strudel which was really good and not too sweet. Though I've got a mad crazy sweet tooth, I enjoyed it a lot. They've also got a decent ice cream selection and other unique desserts to choose from. Nice after dinner place in San Pedro. -

Back when I used to enjoy pastries, this was one of my favorite places to stop in and enjoy a goodie with coffee. It's kind of like visiting Solvang.
The staff is so warm and friendly. The bakery has an assortment of items to choose from (i.e. strudel, crepes, cookies, muffins, etc). They also have an assortment of coffees (cappucino is wonderful), teas, and other juices.
Blueberry cheese is my favorite strudel and the banana/strawberry crepe is sinfully delicious. You can also get non-sweet items as well. -

Heard the hype and had to check it out. In order to provide a credible review, I tried: blueberry & apple strudels. The crust was layers of paper thin pastry and generously filled with the respective fruit. The apple filling worked better because it was less runny and "jam-y" than the blueberry. The strudels are around $5 each. I think I'd rather spend my money one of those bougie $3 cupcakes.

I have to say this first: this place is gorgeous. I spent the entire time I was waiting checking out the scenery. A piano, a little space for checkers, painted eggshells in the glass case...beautiful.
I got a apple strudel and a chocolate chip cookie. Yes this place is nice, but you do pay for it. The strudel was good, not too sweet, and a little too tiny. The cookie was good but tiny as well. I can't wait to try a crepe, their famous beef stew, and maybe some organic coffee...but I'm definitely bringing my paying bf with me next time. -

I went to this little Hungarian bakery for the first time today with a few coworkers, and I was blown away. The food was incredible! I had a blueberry and cheese strudel, a ham and cheese crepe, and a large organic coffee. The ham and cheese crepe had enormous amount of flavor with just the right amount of ham and cheese. (eat it while it's HOT!!) The blueberry and cheese strudel was extremely flaky and just melts in your mouth. The coffee was full of flavor, but not very hot =/.
Prices are fairly reasonable considering the quality of food they have here, and it was pretty busy when we went.
The only problem I have with this place is that it took over 40 minutes for me to get my food! For this reason I give them one star shy of perfection. I went with 4 other people and I ordered second; everyone received their food a good 20 minutes before I did. I had an almost identical order to another person in my party. I think they forgot about my order....
Although they had everything I ordered, I did over hear the worker say that when it gets busy they have a tendency to run out of things like peaches, blueberries, apples, etc.
Mishi's, I will see you soon. -

This place is adorable! I had my bridal shower there a couple of years ago, and they did a great job, as Linda mentioned. The place is perfect for elegant, intimate events, and the people are so nice! When my husband and his best man returned at the end of the shower they were treated to sandwiches and desserts too. I'm sure their German hearts were smiling, and I know they enjoyed talking with the owner.
Recently I returned for coffee and strudel with two of my girlfriends. It was just the way I remembered it, adorable and delicious! I had the cherry strudel and could have easily eaten another one, it was so good! Warm, flaky and delicious!! I will definitely be back soon to try the cherry chocolate! -

What a nice guy Mishi is. He's got this Hungarian accent going for him and the women love it. Well the one woman who was in front of me did.
Hurry up lady, I want my strudel! Move along now.
Best strudels in town. Only strudels it seems. The place is a bit romantic. Well, considering the area and other bakeries I've seen it is. This one is very neighborly... very sweet. The furniture and patrons there make it all peaceful and welcoming.

As you walk in you can smell the fresh Strudels and Coffee. The owner Mishi is very kind and Love to strike up a conversation with the customers. We spoke in Spanish as he described the Hungarian style treats. My son Vic Jr (8 yrs old) was not to sure he would like the place but when he took his first bite of the Vanilla Cheese Strudel he lit up and with a big smile said it was the best Strudel he had ever tasted. The coffee was delicious and the serving size was very generous. I really like the warm, homestyle feeling of Mishi's. I will definitley be back to taste the rest of the menu, they offer much more than dessert Strudels, there is Beef, Mushroom, Spinach, Cheese.....Etc. Can't wait to return.
Dec 19th. I returned to taste the Spinach and Mushroom Studel and I was very pleased. Vic Jr had the same as last time Vanilla Cheese Strudel, he Loved it. Mishi gave us a quick lesson on Chinese Checkers as we waited for our order. Santa Clause walked through the door and the kids eyes opened wide, Vic Jr talked to Santa, told him what he wanted for Christmas, took pictures and recieved a small gift. Got to Love the warm friendly feeling at Mishis. -

What I had thought would be an amazing store I was sadly disappointed and my experience ruined by the owner.
I found Mishi's Strudel to be very tasty! A light and fruit filled delight...although the pricing was a little expensive for the size of the dessert. One piece of strudel almost being $5.00+, depending on the type of strudel.
So why I am giving this store a low rating, well, I did not come to the eatery expecting dinner and an almost rated R show. While having my dessert, the proprietor Mishi suddenly came rushing from the back and out of the store to the street and began yelling at a customer outside of the business next door. Apparently he does not like people watering their dogs "in front of his business."
San Pedro being a close knit town, one with small businesses and families and many lovers of animals and art, I found this to not only be inappropriate, but just plain rude.
I would suggest to Mr. Mishi that if he expects to become a long lasting business owner in this small town that he become a little more tolerant of other. After, dog walkers and lovers like strudel too. -

Heard about this place from a friend of mine, and we decided to head over here with some friends, including a 100% authentic Hungarian. What started out as a handful of friends ended up being a monstrous group of 14 plus 2 small children! We ended up taking over the entire restaurant on a Saturday night--it's not a big place, and I think this place probably has more business for breakfast/lunch, judging by their menu. We really enjoyed our dinner here, with its homey feel and friendly owners/employees. The owner, Mishi Sr., and his wife(I think she was his wife?) are both Hungarian and enjoyed chatting with our Hungarian friend (in Hungarian) as well as chatting with the rest of us (in English). The waitress was new there, but very kind. She split the check up for every couple/family and was so kind in taking a million group pictures for us.
There's a glass case filled with all sorts of lovely-looking cookies and cakes--next time!
On to the food:
1. Bread basket and butter. Comes with the goulash meals, but we had so many people and so many goulash orders, that I was able to try a piece even though I didn't order goulash. It was a pretty good bread--warm, with a nice crust (not as browned and crunchy as European breads often are, but still nice), good flavor.
2. Spinach and mushroom crepe, $7.45. The spinach is made with some sour cream, but it's just a light touch and not heavy. Normally it's served with additional sour cream, but I went without. Overall, this crepe made for a good light meal and I liked it. If you are quite hungry, you will probably want to order something else too. I'm not sure if the filling used fresh spinach & mushrooms (I have the impression it did not), and that could take this dish up a notch!
3. Chestnut puree and whipped cream crepe, $7.95. This is a good dish for chestnut lovers. I liked this but shouldn't eat too much--it's quite sweet!
4. Poppy seed strudel, $4.90, and poppy seed/cheese strudel, $4.90. The pastry is very delicate and flaky! The filling is quite sweet. There is a little apple in there too, which provides a good counterpoint to the sweet poppy seed paste, and I think a bit more apple might be nice. My first thought when I tried this was, "red bean paste"! Not quite the same, but it reminded me of red bean a little at first.t The poppy seed/cheese strudel was similar to the poppy seed strudel except that they added some sweet cheese. Also pretty good, but rich!
You can get frozen strudel to go and bake it yourself!
I've never had Hungarian food before, but our Hungarian friend thought the food seemed fine.
They didn't have a restroom in the restaurant--they took us to a shop a few doors down to the use the restroom. It was a bit of a hassle for them to get the keys out and lock and unlock all of the doors, so we tried to go all in one group when possible to minimize the trouble for them.
Metered parking (free after 6 pm) along the streets.
We had a very enjoyable time in this homey, friendly place. I would like to come back to try some other items--some of those cookies and cakes looked delicious (I'm thinking specifically of some yummy-looking macaroons)! -

I came here two years ago, attending a beautiful bridal shower. The owners closed down the place for the event. It was intimate and lovely. The food was delicious, and they served "bridal tea" as well as coffee. I am more of a coffee drinker, so I didn't have the tea. Its like being in someone's living room, and the tea and coffee were served in lovely tea sets. They served tea time snacks such as cucumber sandwiches that were cut (with cookie utters I presume) to be the shape of butterflies, other pastries and their famous strudel. It was warm, and flakey and buttery, just heavenly! Overall experience was great, I need to return soon!

For the crepes, i had a spinach mushroom... it was okay. Really light. My boyfriend had one that had cheese, spinach, and some type of meat? im not sure what else. He still talks about it, and gets cravings like a pregnant woman.
Im not complaining, Ill stick to the strudel. -
Review from Eugene K.

One of my favorite Strudel places in all of California. I used to have to drive all the way to Santa Barbara for a decent strudel.
My Only note for those who want to get some Strudel is to not come late on First Thursday as the flavor you like is most likely gone and don't forget that they are closed on Monday. Also to call on Tuesday as they seem to close on that day too now.
I have tried many Strudels here and I have to say these are my favorite
1. Cherry + Cheese
2. Blueberry + Cheese
Although all of them are great!
