I had the curry with udon and it was delicious; I would love to come back and try some more things but I liked this so much I might just get it over and over again.
It did smell a little weird in here though. I can't put my finger on what it was- it sort of smelled like that compressed pine dust cat litter. After a while I forgot about it, but it was offputting. -

This is one of those places where I wished I only rated service.
Service was good. Manager was attentive and informative. All around nice guy.
Had the spider roll wrapped in soy bean paper. Nothing special...rice didn't seem to taste fresh, tempura wasn't as crispy as I'd like...seemed like it had been sitting there for a while..
Also had the soba, it was good, but its pretty hard to mess up.
This place may not be great for sushi, but it seems okay if your looking for average japanese food. -

Just discovered the most wonderful thing at Mishima today: spicy edamame! They do it with bonito flakes and chilli! So addicting!! It was so tasty, I even stirred the chilli into my rice! Also got the Gozen bento box. For $14.95, you get meat or fish with steamed veggies to go with 5 pieces of tempura (one shrimp), 4 pieces of California roll, a large bowl of miso soup, white rice, a huge pile of sliced lotus root, a huge pile of tofu salad, AND a dessert! Everything tasted great, especially the tofu salad. The black cod was perfectly seasoned and cooked...very moist! Mmmm! The service was super fast and friendly too! I'm definitely fitting Mishima into my weekly schedule from now on.
P.S. The cooks from Sushi Roku across the street eat here too...'nuf said! -

Came in here to grab a quick dinner before meeting up friends for a birthday. Pretty decent prices. They have different Bento box options, rice and noodle combos, or sushi and noodle combos. Something for everyone. Udon soup was on point. I had the tempura rice bowl. It hit the spot. On the weekends, Asahi beer was just $1.
Located near the Beverly center. I'd come here if I'm in the area for an affordable luncheon/dinner. -

Went to Mishima with a friend before we caught a play at a theater in the area.
He was raving about the Bento boxes, and insisted that I try one.
I got the Chicken Bento box which was a lot of food, and really good.
While we were there they were having a special on Beers. I think it was only a dollar or two for a beer. So even though I am more of a wine person, I got a beer to go with my Bento Box.
The waiter was really friendly and talkative. My friend goes there so often that they know him. And there was plenty of parking in the parking lot right in front of the restaurant. -

But as far as i know it started here for me. -
Review from Katy O.
This is probably the most decently priced Japanese restaurant in the area and thankfully it's very good. I don't really come here for the sushi but more for the udon and rice bowls.
Good Udon, although seemingly simple enough, can be very difficult to find in the states. Mishima does a very good job with the texture of the noodles and flavor of the broth. And they give you a generous portion of fried tempura bits with every order. Their Katsu-don is also up to par (fried pork cutlet with egg on top of rice).
Service is good and their combos give generous portions for a decent price. I tend to gravitate towards their special of the day, which the last two times I've been there has been spicy tuna with avacado roll with a bowl of udon. Very good and very filling. Their fried chicken appetizer (can't recall the name for it, sorry), is very tasty too, but try not to fill up too much before your main entree.
I come quite often when I'm in the area. It's always been reliable for a nice indulgent lunch. -
Review from Ken K.
My girlfriend and I had dinner here before going to LACMA for the last night of Tim Burton's exhibit, and I have to say the food was pretty disappointing. It wasn't bad, but I've definitely had better.
I got the Mishima Gozen Bento and everything in it was mediocre at best. The CA roll and tempura were average, while the rib eye was cooked well-done and not very flavorful. The tofu salad was the best thing there, but I don't know if I'd rave about it as much as others have.
My girlfriend got the Chicken Bento and she seemed to enjoy her food about as much as I did.
Next time, I'll have to check out Sushi Mac next door. -

When it comes to food, especially Japanese food....I hate having to choose. I always want a little of this and some of that, something cooked, something raw and oh, that roll sounds good...and I've gotta have some miso. What's a hungry girl to do???
Mini bento box to the rescue!
Salmon teriyaki, slices of seared tuna over greens with a SPICY wasabi dressing, a california roll, rice and miso all together for $10.75?! No need to decide! It's all right there and for a very reasonable price. Always fresh, tasty and quick. And as for a drink to wash it all down....they make that choice easy too! $1 beer on weekends! -

This is a great staple for noodles and rice bowls. I used to come here like once a week when I lived nearby. If they had one near my current house, would be there once a week at least. All the dishes are tasty, come out hot (or cold if you order cold noodles), and service is consistent. My kids snicker when the Japanese host brings dessert and says "Coffee Jerro..." Like this place.

Another great Japanese Restaurant, in the West Los Angeles area within walking distance from the Beverley Center.
FOOD: So many good items to list. Their 'Tofu' Salad is a great appetizer which comes with their delicious house dressing, served cold and topped with turnip sprouts, iceberg lettuce, & bonito fish flakes. The 'Agedashi' Tofu also stands out because it comes with a soy sauce broth with various Japanese mushrooms, while others places just serve it in the plain broth. There are many other items that are good, such as the Una-Don (grilled eel), the Miso Pork Dish, and the various Udon & Soba soup noodles (hot or cold versions). This is the only place I know of that serves 'Inaiwa', noodles, which is similar to Udon, but smaller & flat. All of these items taste even better with their own 'Mishima' brand Nori Furikake seasoning.
SERVICE: good, and food comes fast once you placed the order.
PARKING: parking is available in front of the restaurant, shared by other businesses inside that plaza. Some spaces are very compact, though.
OVERALL: 5-Stars..definitely recommended for great Japanese Food. -

Another great find close by my work place! Had a fantastic lunch here today with some co-workers.
I got the #8 Crunchy Spicy Tuna as a combo which came with a Half side of Noodle Soup (Hot or Cold) and Miso Salad. The Sushi was really good but the Noodle Soup was my favorite. I wish they had wooden chopsticks though because it was hard to grip the slippery thick noodles with the plastic ones. We also got the Grilled Gyoza which was amaaaazing. Their iced tea is black tea which at first sip I wasn't really feeling, but then I ended up knocking back like 4 or 5 refills. Haha
Service was good and parking wasn't bad. Definitely a great spot for our sushi/japanese fix during work days. -

YUM! I love this place! I came on a weekday & took advantage of nearly every special. I got a sushi roll combo which included a large bowl of udon soup & a small side salad and added the 2 pc gyoza special. So much food for a great price and it was all delicious!

Free wifi, $1 Kirin beer on weekends, tofu salad, black cod combo, cold soba, nori komi furiake on the table... Wow what a great meal! I've been eating here since the early '90s and its still one of my favorites. Service is still good and the crowds are still coming to this establishment. They still use '90s tech with the Compaq Pocket PC devices to take orders. Remember to use your Mishima card for dining points.

Good lunch specials on the Bento Box! Plus, I've seen some cool celebrities in here. Camerono Diaz, and even better, the dude from 16 Candles who played Long Duck Dong!

This is the perfect spot that the Japanese do other foods than sushi! (But don't worry as they serve sushi here too)
We randomly ended up here for dinner last night and tried a wide range of things on the menu. It's a quick, easy, affordable spot with some unique menu items. The large menus are a little overwhelming but I think the photos help you decide what you want.
I really like the appetizer sampler that had spinach, kabocha and lotus root. They were cold, and while I would have preferred them hot, they were still tasty.
The crunchy tuna roll was also great but the salmon roll could have been a little fresher imo.
The chicken and egg noodle bowl was hot, soothing and flavorful and I ordered it with the soba noodles (I think they are healthier than Udon, but I am not really sure). The noodle bowl is enough for dinner as it comes with a ton of veggies in it, chicken, scallions and egg.
I felt like we had a feast! There was so much food on the table and it was only $50. I think it'd be pretty easy to eat here for around $12 per person.Listed in: West Hollywood, cheap eats!, Ethnic in LA

Mishima is a small restaurant, it's very cute for a simple nice time to catch up with friends. We had a spicy tuna roll which was good, and then an order of ramen, which was also good here. Nothing spectacular, but a good neighborhood place to go for Japanese food.

Mishima hit the spot. I was craving hot noodle soup with soba noodles and they are the only place I know of in town that serves that. This dish was pretty good. I think the broth could've have been less dark but overall good. I love soba noodles in seaweed broth and it really satisfied my craving for that. The tempura was good too the only complaint I had is that there was a simple white mushroom tempura which had a weird texture and they had no sea salt or radish to go with it. The service was polite and fast and you can't beat a $1 Ichiban Beer special.

* Can it be possible for a place to have negative atmosphere? My storage closet has more personality.
* Super mediocre food--simple flavors (sweet! salty!) can't hide cafeteria-quality noodles and tempura breading.
* Service is brisk. Too brisk. Staff is definitely preoccupied with flipping tables.
* There do seem to be a few regulars here, and they're greeted warmly.
* Lively and fun to see Mexican staff speaking over-the-top militaristic Japanese ("hai" this and "hai" that), Japanese staff speaking over-the-top casual American English ("All right you guys, this right here is gonna be your tempura noodle combo okaaay?") and all the kitchen staff hollering "amigo" at each other in Mexican Spanish. Welcome to LA! :) -
Review from Leslie H.
Large portions of reliably tasty Japanese favorites. I came here at 11:25pm on a weekday only to discover that they don't open until for lunch until 11:30! Oh well, it was a nice day so the 5 minute wait wasn't too bad. What WAS odd was being the first party to enter and be seated in the restaurant.
Service is very attentive and friendly. We were immediately seated and brought menus. The menu is massive, and all of the large color photos accompanying items are much appreciated. You can order items separately, a la carte, or as part of bentos or set meals.
I got the appetizer Gomaae Spinach which is described as Japanese spinach salad with sesame seasoning. Basically, it was blanched spinach dusted with sesame or peanut powder. The portion size was pretty massive considering how much spinach shrinks when cooked. Unfortunately, it was pretty tasteless. I remedied this by dunking it in my curry. I also ordered the chicken curry with rice. It came with a side of miso soup and some little unidentifiable pickles and pickled green bean segments. The curry portion was ridiculously huge. It came in a bowl, rather than on a plate, and could easily feed 2. The curry was a bit more watery than I am used to but was still quite tasty. It had boneless chunks of chicken and sliced onions. It could be made richer if it had some cubes of potato and carrot, but all in all, I found it very satisfying.
I also tried the agedashi tofu and can highly recommend it! It's not your typical agedashi tofu which is fairly dry, other than the small portion of dashi broth. Instead, the Mishima version features the tofu fully immersed in a delicious soy, mushroom, and dashi broth, and also has delicious oyster mushrooms. I would definitely order this again. -

Went here on Saturday and it was very solid. Had the Ten Don with rice and hot soba. I remember Mishima being better in the past and the interior seems like it is a bit shopworn and dated. If I was in the area and craving soba, I would eat here again, but would not go out of my way to eat here.

Review from Erica L.
Not all vegetarian Japanese entrees are created equal, I discovered today at Mishima. Which is a shame, because until I recently turned veggie, I liked Mishima. Particularly, it's Soft Shell Crab Salad.
However, today, hankering for late lunch, after a particularly grueling morning, I venture here, and ordered the Vegetarian Bento Box http://bit.ly/ri9vqB. And I gotta say...wasn't impressed. Compared to my recent experience at Inaka http://bit.ly/nlaN00, the Tofu Steak was too soft and the sauce forgettable. The California Rolls were OK, as was the rice. The udon and spinach OK as well, however, they sat in a broth that tasted straight outta the bottle. The vegetable tempura was overly fried with oil that was probably a bit stale.
I got a call in the middle of my meal, having demolished most everything, except a few pieces of tempura, and was answering the phone while eating some udon, when the busboy came by gesturing to take away the other dishes. I raised my finger, signalling, "No," as there were clearly some pieces of tempura left. I really didn't like that...just because I pushed the dishes out of the way did not mean I was DONE.
Wasn't impressed and won't be back. -

food: i give mishima 1.5 stars. this place used to be good many many many years ago, but with the changes in owners and staff, the quality has gone done significantly. however! i do go here a couple times a year when i'm craving udon (only place in mid-city i think?). tori toji udon is good. the spicy tuna bowl is NOT.
service: bad but it's cheap
final thoughts: again, not my fave at all but hits the spot when i'm craving udon. -
Review from Pegah Y.
Mishima is pretty delicious. I ordered the chicken bento box and truly enjoyed it. I thought it was a lot of food. It was really filling. It came with chicken teriyaki, rice, udon soup (pretty large), 4 pieces of spicy tuna rolls, fried tempura, and a small salad. It's pretty big and delicious. I wasn't a HUGE fan of their chicken teriyaki because it was a little mild and did not have enough sauce on it. I loved the udon and the rest of the meal, though.
The meal is a little pricey ($14.95) for just the chicken bento box. I've gotten comparable lunch bento boxes elsewhere for much less ($8 at T.O.T. sushi).
Still, the food here is pretty delicious and I would recommend it. -

I love Japanese noodles. I always come here when I crave for hot SOBA and rice dishes. There combos are reasonably priced. From TEMPURA to sweet EEL rice dishes, they are all delicious. I always leave satisfied. Service is great. Staff is friendly. Plus, it's close to the beverly mall. It's a nice place to take a break from a busy day of shopping.

This place made me sick, had me throwing up all memorial day weekend.
I had the ten zaru, and a spicy tuna roll. I suspect it was the roll but who knows. Maybe some cross contamination.
From the moment I left the place I was feeling funny. A few hours later I was in trouble. -

There are so many options here that it makes taking our 1 year old daughter an easy solution for dinner. The tofu salad is one of my favorites - the dressing is sooooooo good! All of the various appetizers are great too - lotus root, edamame, pumpkin, etc. The noodles and sushi are good too. The best part - the price!!!!

$1 Kirin Drafts (16oz!!!) all weekend long make it easy to like Mishima. Mix in Japanese favorites like Don Buri, Udon, Tempura, Soba, & Sushi Rolls and it's easy to see why so many consider this a natural relaxation spot after trolling through the nearby Beverly Center.
Most of the food was A-OK, but a few items really missed the mark. The best was a soft Tofu Salad that came as part of the Mishima Signature set menu. It also includes Vegetable Tempura (not the best), sweet Pumpkin (nice change), California Roll (blah), Tofu Miso Soup (weak), and choice of Teriyaki meat. We opted for the Salmon Teriyaki and it was not good. I only ate one bite of it. Dessert is included so we chose Green Tea Ice Cream (sweet).
We also found the Katsu-Don and Udon Combination very filling. The pork was a little thin & chewy for my tastes. The udon noodles were nice although the broth lacked much flavor. I'd come back for udon or soba again. We also got the $1.50 Starter Taster which has a couple pieces of unremarkable Spicy Tuna Roll, 6 basic Edamame pods, and 2 cooked pieces of Mushroom.
The non-Japanese service was friendly, helpful with suggestions, and relatively quick. We left our car at the Beverly Center where we'd spent the day and just walked the 1/2 block to Mishima, however, it looked like there was plenty of parking at the strip mall where the restaurant is located.
It's going to be hard for me not to come back for $1 Kirin Draft Beers and Japanese food. When I do, I'll be ordering other items in hopes of finding some quality at Mishima.Listed in: Asian in L.A., Nihon no Ryori, From Beer to Eternity

Place was pretty quiet when we got there around 6:30p on a Thursday, but got full by 7:30p. For location, we were lucky to find parking - they have a medium-sized lot of free parking spots that they share with the rest of the complex.
Tempura Udon ($10.75): Udon overcooked, broth totally flavorless, tempura sauce basically warm soy sauce. Served lukewarm. Batter really bready, lacking flavor. Totally dissatisfying.
Tofu Salad ($4.25): Awful. Dressing like thousand island, no room to mix it (everything piled to the brim in a bowl), big chunk of cold tofu at bottom sitting in a sad puddle of tofu juice. Totally mystified what everyone was raving about.
House sake: ($7.50): hot. For the price, really rough. They had better kinds for around $11, but I probably should have just gone for a beer.
Yosenabe Seafood Pot ($13): Really flavorful, lots of good-sized pieces of fish and variety of seafood. Complex and rich broth. Excellent.
Service at first attentive, but didn't come around to fill my water glass once. Pretty quick with the check relay.
Overall, decent price for Japanese food given the location, but I won't be going back. However, if you like seafood, the yosenabe is worth checking out. -

Went here a lot for lunch time when I used to work in mid-wilshire area. Their food is pretty good, good service.
Tofu salad is amazing. I used to buy their sesame salad dressing to bring home so I can make my own.. Soft shell crab salad is also good.
the rice dishes are pretty good too, I usually get the oyako don or tanin don.
I think their udon and soba are great. I like the california soba salad, which has avocado, imitation crab, tomato, cucumber, tamago, and soba with their sesame dressing. -

This is a really casual Japanese place that is perfect for lunch or brunch. Im not really a picky sushi eater and just like to stay on the safe side with spicy tuna rolls, crunch rolls, dragon rolls etc and this place has it all. They have lunch specials that I usuall get that include your choice of udon with your choice of sushi rolls. Thats what I usually get and it's enough to fill me up! I really like this place for the quick service, and good casual food.
Doesn't really have an authentic Japanese feel/ decor but if you don't mind just stopping by a casual place for a quick bite, you'll like this place! -

They're known for their noodles, which are indeed quite good, and the variety of various noodles soups and options are great, but there are other things here that are executed perfectly. And perfectly again, every time I come here.
Their agedashi tofu is the only I've ever had that's not only exquisite, but it has.... mushrooms! Fantastic, meaty, brothy, a winter's treat that is good anytime. TRY THIS DISH. -

Cindy W turned me to their tofu salad. To name it a tofu salad is wrong. It's just so much more than that with the salmon skin. Get the large- it's a better value.
Their pork miso don is the yummiest I've ever had.
Free matcha green tea (hot only, cold is extra charge).
Love how they just leave the sesame weed and japanese chilli on the table so I can pour to my heart's content.
And they offer brown rice (for $0.85) ! I prefer the texture.. chewier.
Their spicy tuna roll is ok, but it's a good appetizer to share. You know what.. this place is really for their miso dons, not for their sushi or udons. Their sushi is decent, not great.
I always leave here with a satisfied clean feeling fullness. No weird fishy flavor. -

You cannot go wrong with a meal here. I don't know if I ever ate anything that I truly didn't like at this place. For noodle options you get udon, soba, or inaniwa. I like all three but my favorite is inaniwa or soba depending on what else I get. Start out with a tofu salad and if you're really hungry go for a noodle/donburi combo. The oyako-don or tanin-don is done right with the egg cooked just enough over the bowl and the soy flavoring in the rice is near perfect. The hot noodle broth is well balanced between sweet and salty. I have yet to find another place that has broth anywhere near the flavor balance as Mishima.
The spicy tuna rolls are okay, but you really don't come to this place for the rolls. Its all about the noodles and rice bowls. -

A spontaneous Yelp hunt for good Japanese food led us to Mishima. Impressed by their rating, I decided to go and check it out for myself... alas another satisfied customer!
The food was delicious. The menu filled with various Japanese goodies to satiate whatever appetite's in store; From small appetizer dishes to noodles to rices and bento boxes, and of course your the usual rolls.
The service was delightful, parking was easy and free, and above all... the price was very affordable! -

When I was going to college in LA a while back [way awhile back], Mishima used to be the go to place for me a few friends. The donburi and udon combo was killer. The Mishima we went to was along Sawtelle, where all things Japanese is good.
It's been at least 8-10 years since my last visit to a Mishima and I remember the last one I went to was the one in Hollywood along 3rd St. and La Cienega. We happened to be in the neighborhood and decided to visit it again.
Wow, how 10 years of taste buds have changed. They expanded the menu now to a lot more things like udon, donburi, and the rice balls. We ordered:
Agedashi Tofu
Shrimp tempura roll
Grilled gyoza
Pork Katsu Donburi and udon combo set
First the agedashi. I don't know where these guys had their agedashi in the past, but agedashi should not be drowned in the yuzu sauce. I mean, it was a bowl of this yuzu soup with 4 gigantic tofu blocks. No...that's not even close. And not only that, it didn't match the picture AT ALL.
Shrimp tempura roll. Sigh. Why people continue to use soy paper to wrap their rolls instead of nori is beyond me. Couldn't even taste the shrimp tempura. And it was tough to see whether it was soy paper on the picture, so shame on us for ordering this monstrosity.
Grilled gyoza. OK, I had low expectations on this one. I was thinking, frozen gyoza on a hot plate. And that's exactly what I got.
Pork katsu donuri and udon. Well, the pork katsu was actually pretty tasty. Kind of what I remembered it to be so many years ago. The udon wasn't bad either, but I think I've been totally spoiled by Fukada down here, where the udon isn't so thick.
All in all....kind of meh. It was a tough blow because Mishima, for me, had so many good memories. A bummer it had to end on this meal like this. -

I feel like I can't give this place a complete review because I didn't really try the sashimi, but for the lunch menu and food, it was pretty good. They have some good bento box deals for lunch.
Personally, I liked the [unagi bento box] a lot. The unagi didn't have that bitter after taste that I sometimes find with other unagi, so I thought this one was the winner. The one with salmon and [seared ahi tuna] was just okay. But be warned if you can't handle too much wasabi, drenching the ahi tuna with their dressing is deadly because it's like miso-wasabi infused or something!
I ordered the [oyako don] which was standard and pretty good, but nothing to rave about. Apparently you can make it a combo and get soba noddles with it too, which I hear are yummy. But I knew I couldn't finish it all haha :)
Their rolls were interesting. Got one with [seared scallops], [spider roll], and some [wasabi tuna roll]. They don't use normal nori to wrap the sushi rolls...I'll post pictures later but the outer layer is some kind of rice paper wrapping that's slightly crunchy and pretty flavorless. It looks kind of cool, but I think the nori might have been better flavored. The scallop one was pretty good, but the others weren't super memorable.
The [flan/egg custard] is pretty good for dessert and there's two great sauces that come with it--one is a creamy custardy sauce and the other is a strawberry jam sauce. Both are delicious! [Mochi ice cream] comes with those sauces too...they're pretty standard as well.
I gave them more stars because of great service and friendly staff! Oh and they have bomb furikake! You can buy them here for cheaper than at the grocery stores =) Food was decent, but not something I'd go out of my way to go get unless I was in the area. =)
Parking is kind of hard because the center is small, but we got lucky. Sorry I can't give you more tips on that part! -

Always enjoy this place. Nice quick food. Nothing fancy but hits the spot at a great price. The place gets four stars because it quick and cheap. We always get some variation of the three hand rolls, and udon dish and chicken katsu. The tofu salad is also great. Also love the drink deals. Right now they are having mugs of kirin for $1.. can't beat that!
