Review from Adam D.
South Bend, IN
My review of the Mishawaka Brewing Company may be slightly biased. After graduating college I spent most of my Tuesday nights at the Brew Co. for half priced pitchers and live music. At the time this bar combined everything I could have asked for into one night and it was an event not to be missed. However, all good things come to end - so they say. In my opinion the Brew Co has become a shadow of it's former self. Cover is now $5, pitchers are still half priced, but the bands are less frequent and in this writers opinion not anywhere near the caliber of talent their local roster used to boast. The bar/wait staff too have changed, and the regulars have all scattered about town.
However, the point of any good review is to remain unbiased and to report what the basic facts and opinions on the site. If you are a fan of local brewery's the Mishawaka Brew Co. will not disappoint. They have a great selection of 7-10 beers brewed on site and prices are generally reasonable. If there are no specials you can generally count on spending $5 - $7 for a pint of microbrew - depending on the alcohol content, some go up to 10%+. (If you find one you like you can take home a glass engraved jug for $15 and bring it back for refills, they also have special orders for kegs available.) They do not offer a full service bar so if beer and wine aren't your drinks plan on ordering a soft drink or water. If you are a fan of visiting brewery's you are probably also used to pricey/limited menu selection and here is no different. (A few blocks North of this location the Brewery has a restaurant location which offers a much fuller menu and more formal dining area.) The food at the brewery is best described as "Americanized International." The brewery is a great place to take people from out of town for something different to eat and drink. Booths and tables in three separate areas generally means there is room for large parties or just dinner with a friend.
For the late night crowd the Brew Co. still does offer live music several times a month. Large screen TV's in the bar section normally have the local favorites playing (Cubs, Sox, Bears, Colts, Pacers, Irish, etc...) on the screens. A jukebox with an Internet connection makes for an interesting playlist of NON-top forty hits largely rooted in the classic rock tradition. Pool and foosball tables line the wall of the music room of the Brew Co and are generally always in use. (Show up early if you plan on playing.) Again Tuesday's are half priced pitchers, and generally have some sort of act on stage. For the schedule you can visit the Brew Co site at: http://www.mishawakabr.../
As with all IN bars the Brew Co. is now a no smoking establishment but the outdoor patio has become the smokers lounge and again most nice nights you will want to plan on showing up early to grab a seat. In summation, you can't beat the brews they have on tap, it's relation to the mall and main shopping district make it an easy lunch or dinner location. For the younger (college crowd) check the Brew Co site for bands and specials, those are the nights worth stopping in. -
Review from J i.
Valparaiso, IN
Sadly, the BrewCo has closed as of early December 2008. At least, they are still brewing the beer (over in Elkhart) so it still will be available in the area. I spent many, many nights at the BrewCo during my grad school years at Notre Dame. The beer was great, and they offered a decent line of pub grub - burgers, steaks, nachos, and a few english style dishes - pasties, scotch eggs, smoked fish, etc. Nothing to blow you away, but always solid.
I get back to South Bend regularly, and visited the BrewCo a couple times a year. I hate to say it, but in my last couple visits, I noticed that the place was in decline. The food and service had gone way down hill, and even the beer didn't seem right. Last time I was there, we ordered a pitcher of their marquee beer - Four Horsemen - and it tasted awful - like the tap wasn't clean or something. We complained to the waitress, and she just shrugged and said no one else had a problem with it. I've been drinking Four Horsemen since they first came out with it, and I know what it's supposed to taste like.
So, I'm sad to see it go, but South Bend is developing nicely, and there are other good options that didn't exist ten years ago. Sounds like the BrewCo just couldn't keep up.
