Generally speaking - getting your passport renewed can be a major headache. But at the Sutter Street Station, it was a walk in the park. Dearest Winnie was there, an angel sent from the U.S. Department of State in an unflattering blue postal service uniform, to hold my hand during this difficult time.
I had an outdated form but she didn't bite my head off, just politely handed me a new one.
I asked the difference between a passport book and a passport card and she didn't roll her eyes and sigh indignantly, but graciously explained the difference with a smile on her face.
And although I was SURE she'd scowl once she saw my disgrace of a birth certificate (it's literally disintegrating and one wrong move away from ripping into pieces - I honestly didn't know if they'd even accept it) but she didn't! She simply giggled in amusement and provided me with two websites from which she promises I can easily order a new one at my convenience.
I was in and out of there faster than you can say " ONLY-TWO-MONTHS-UNTIL-MY-FABULOUS-DREAM-TEAM -OF-FRIENDS-AND-I-LOSE-ALL-OUR-INHIBITIONS-IN-SPAI N-ONLY-TO-RETURN-CHANGED-WOMEN-SICK-OF-OUR-BOYFRIE NDS-AND-READY-TO-LIVE-LIVES-BASED-SOLELY-ON-EXPERI ENCING-PLEASURE-IN-ALL-ITS-DIVERSE-FORMS-WHEREVER- WE-MAY-FIND-IT!!!" It's a mouth full but it still doesn't take very long to spit out.
Thanks Winnie :)

The passport portion of this office is fan friggin tastic. I don't know if they give them Paxil at the beginning of their shift, or what. But they were very nice and answered all of my questions. The woman I spoke with was very understanding when I told her how nervous I was about surrendering my passport.
They also have a lot of self service stuff at this office. The main downside is, if you need to send a package, they do NOT provide packing tape to close your box. ARGH.

I needed a passport. This place scored cos the line was only half an hour, compared to over an hour at city hall. The guy behind the counter, although cheerless, kicked ass. Someone tried to jump the line and he so put them in their place. They're still smarting from their wounds. Props.

Don't go to the passport office on Market. Consider going to the post office. It is a very painless procedure and you leave w/o feeling exasperated with the slow service (see DMV). I got my original passport at the PO and I've also done it in the passport office. PO wins hands down!
