Beaverton, OR
The Mio locations over by me in Beaverton have waaaaay better service but it is hard to get me to lower my stars just because all Mio locations have my favorite sashimi salads and double crunch roll. I think they just might use crack as their secret ingredient because seriously, their food is freaking addicting.
The service here though really is not great - the few times our server actually checked on us she just seemed pretty complacent.
The location itself felt a bit weird - I know it is a new area and add but it just feels sort of off the beaten path or something. -
Review from Misty S.
I took my kids here for a special sushi dinner and figured it would be like other places. We usually go to the sushi track places because my kids only eat the veggie sushi BUT this time we were in the Hollywood area. We needed sushi NOW and the other place nearby seemed too adult-only-ish for us, so we landed at Mio out of convenience.
I have to say that the sushi was good, not super awesome but pretty good. It was nothing memorable but then again, I didn't get food poisoning so that's pretty awesome. ;)
Having said all this, you might think I'd maybe 4 stars. After all, the place isn't super awesome and it IS a little pricey. It's just a satisfactory place, nothing special. This is where it gets realllll. I ask the server about tamari (which I do at every sushi place and they always look at me like this: O_O). She says, "Oh yeah, we have that! I'll be right back!" and proceeds to bring a bottle of tamari to the table. Anyone who is gluten-free can hear the bells ringing right now. THAT is what earned this place a big fat 5 stars. Gluten-free tamari so that us damned gluten-avoiders can dip OUR sushi too! I think I can overlook the mediocrity just for that fact alone. I'll gladly pay a bit extra to come here! -

I like this place. And it's the first sushi place I've hit up here. Huzzah!
So, yes. There are much fancier sushi places to hit. But that's the thing with me, I don't really like fancy. Because, don't get me wrong, higher quality fish (food) will always mean better flavor, but it means nothing to me if I am preoccupied with thinking about if I am eating it right, or if I am aware the whole time of how hard it's going to hit my wallet.
So in comes this place. Nice, good quality sushi for the price. Good variety of rolls, nice choice of non sushi items, and to top it off, one the nicest waitresses I've ever had.
I went with family, and while some of us chowed down on rolls, it was nice to see that for once, the non-sushi eaters were pleased with their meals too. The kids bentos actually have a pretty good portion to them, and nothing beats the fact that the waitress kindly presented my 4yr old little bro with those "easy" chopsticks, and how his face lit up when he was able to pick up rice with them. The waitress congratulated him, and he used them for the ENTIRE meal.
I was also informed by my mom that the tempura and salmon teriyaki where very good (and she's PICK-AY). The feeling and decor inside the place is nice, and cozy, and chill, kind of like a quaint spa. Maybe it was the paint? I cant really put my finger on it, but we ate slowly, and calmly, and chatted, and really just, enjoyed our meal time, not just the meal. I will be back, and totally not mind that I have not dropped half a paycheck on it. -

I've been in a phase of eating in which I crave only sushi. I can't explain precisely how I get myself Into these phases, but a few months ago I couldn't go a day without pho broth swirling in my mouth and the aroma of stewed beef caught in my hair and clothes.
With food, i've got a snobby palate and can get pretty uppity about the things that pass the gates of my tongue. On the other hand, I also have a rather non discriminating stomach and an even bigger appetite which means if I'm hungry, and that I am 24/7, I will eat anything, regardless of whether my meal was touched by a tattooed knuckle at clyde or churned into plastic Private Selection packaging...
Anyhoo, I consistently find myself getting turned on by mio because of how cheap the sushi here is. I'm used to paying upwards of 20-25 for sashimi, but I also understand that these steep prices are generally an indicator of high quality. At mio, a sashimi combination (about 12 pieces of salmon, tuna, and whitefish) that comes with miso (run of the mill miso, subtly tastier than miso ive had at bluefin and koji, for example, but slightly reminiscent of dish soap....common problem it seems at a lot of sushi restaurants) and a bowl of rice runs at 16 dollaroos. The tuna and the salmon are not bad, but are sliced rather thin. The whitefish isn't very good--not entirely offensive but off enough that only lemon juice, a bunch of green onions and Ginger, and lots of soy sauce and wasabi will make it taste less like a seafood crate. Ive been to this mio a few times...this whitefish, particularly the tai, seems to be reliably unappetizing.
Veggie tempura is bomb, but when do high cholesterol foods ever really fail the expectations of a hungry diner? However the veggie ramen I had there was mediocre as the veggies had a stewed texture, did not have the bite and crispness that fresh veggies always contain. Pass!
What really bums me out about mio is the lackluster and uninspired service. I've gotten the same waitress the last couple of times I ate there, and she is a mega stress ball. She seemed nervous and was speaking to us in a rush but was slow In getting our water, teas, and food to us. She had maybe three or four other tables to tend to, but never checked up on us, and didn't bus anything on our table and even landed our check onto the wrong table. Take it easy girl! Honestly it wasn't that busy and it seemed like she could handle only one table at a time. Unfortunate. It made us feel like we couldn't ask for tea refills or even about dessert lest she shatter into tears. Luckily trader joes is right across the street and they have cookies.
I think this sushi fetish has maybe got a two week run left before it turns into something else....I'm feelin a pasta phase coming on. But until then, I'd best stifle my sashimi urges or I'm out a paycheck at bamboo. -

Do you like food poisoning? I've had food poisoning just twice in my life, and occurance number 2 was Wednesday night at Mio. Went to 24 Hour Fitness to work out and thought we'd have a quick, healthy dinner at Mio before Thursday's Thanksgiving feast. We've been to both Mio locations a number of times and have never been impressed, but it's quick and easy. My wife got a little sick there once last year and has been reticent to go there since. After spending all night on the toilet and having a headache, body aches, and no appetite on Thanksgiving, I won't ever be back. Symptoms still lingering today more than 36 hours after the meal. There are too many good sushi places in PDX to risk eating at Mio. Maybe they'll clean up their kitchen???

Went back the other night for another gullet-stuffing of raw animals. I can relate to sushi: Like the guy with the beard hitting on Diane Keaton in "Annie Hall", I, too, want to die by being torn apart by wild animals. (But then eaten tartar). Sorry, tangent.
What was noticeable this time was the ambiance--we were seated, and ordered, to the throbbing pulse of 50 Cent's lyrical masterpiece "In Da Club." In full grammatical honesty, I prefer "The" Club to "Da" Club, but I don't get to make that call. But once you get past such a simple faux pas, you can dine peacefully knowing that Mr.Cent, by his own admission, is meeting a lot of nice girls, dancing in a warm yet safe environment, and apparantly treating everyone like it's their birthday (or Birfday, if you can throw the slang). Who doesn't like birthdays?
I felt a little sad for the elderly couple who were clearly not enjoying their hip hop fish dinner. Their faces during the song told me more than words of exasperation ever could: they were in Lil' Wayne's camp.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Mio Sushi is a nice place to stop into for some light fare. The wait staff is very enthusiastic and friendly.
They have gluten free sushi, but you have to be careful about what you order. They can and will replace any krab with real crab, but make sure they know that its for gluten intolerance. Fried foods are cross contaminated, so no crunchy rolls.
Just le them know you need the Tamari, aka Gluten Free Soy Sauce
For the non-fish eater (aka Me) the Inari is yummy and they have these awesome cold noodles that I get. THey are glutenated, but I'm not the celiac in the equation. -
Review from Matt S.
Reliably good sushi. I have eaten here a number of times, and have yet to be unhappy. Based on the consistent quality in return visits, I decided to write a new review and add a star. The fish is always high quality, and the specialty rolls are very tasty. They recently added a few non-traditional rolls that involve fruits and other toppings, which are a refreshing change from the usual sushi restaurant selections that are just permutations on the tuna/salmon/crab/spicy theme. I am also very, very happy that they don't automatically cover every roll in some form of mayo - for folks like me that avoid mayo, this is a big plus. I recommend this place for affordable yet high quality sushi.

Review from Bree C.
Why did I try a combo meal at Mio Sushi for my first time? It seemed like a good deal, but I actually think just ordering sushi is the way to go. The rest of the food wasn't bad, but not great and not really worth the extra money, (small portion, salad+soup is cheap)
However, that is my only complaint. Service wasn't totally spot on, but I don't care. The sushi is killer, and the rolls aren't bad priced. I can't wait to hit up happy hour and sushi the hell out of myself. The Alaska rolls, and California rolls were fresh, tasty and decently priced. Tight little sexy bundles of joy, popped in my mouth one after the other, although I did share with my 3 companions. This time... you're on your own next time guys ;) -

My experience at Mio was mediocre at best but I will start with the positives:
Mio has a great happy hour. Large Japanese beer for 4 dollars and some quite complex rolls for 6 or 7 bucks. Their sashimi is fresh and Good quality. The servers were friendly but took forever to give us our check.
And now for the bad...
The rolls that I had that contained fried components were obviously old because there was no crunch and one of the rolls even tasted like it had been in the refrigerator. Sushi rice should be slightly warm and it was flat out cold. Our spicy tuna roll was so fishy it was inedible and I am not one to ever leave sushi uneaten! The miso soup was overly salty and the eel sauce was outrageously sweet - so sweet that I could not taste anything else in the roll.
I will probably never return to Mio because I was utterly disappointed. If it were not happy hour when I went and I had paid full price, I would have given them one star. -

Been here many times. Finally decided to express my frustration with this mio sushi location.
My favorite sushi roll is the OREGON roll. Really good. Love the way they wrap the salmon around the outside of the roll.
Gyoza ... Always tastes like it wasnfrozen for a few weeks before they finally heated it up for serving in the restaurant.
The big problem with this Mio Sushi location is the really slow service. Seems like they just don't hire enough wait-people. Slow service, big problem.
The ambience just isn't nice enough to make it worth the wait.
We do occasionally order dinner to-go. After all, this is the lessor expensive sushi (not the least expensive sushi) and the kids seem to like the food. To-go orders are consistently handled efficiently.
Slow service! Ouch. -

We go to this Mio just about every time we eat sushi. The only place I've had better was at Bamboo, which is AWESOME. Back to Mio, though...
The service at this location is very friendly and usually they serve you pretty quickly. The food is always fresh, except for one thing, which is why they only get 4 stars, instead of 5, from me. That thing was the berry cheesecake that we ordered for dessert, once. It was still frozen in the middle and tasted slightly freezer burnt.
HOWEVER, when the gal came back to pick up our plates and noticed that neither of us had really eaten much of the dessert, she asked if it was ok, and when we told her, she got us a refund for those and gave us this AWESOME free little sushi plate(I don't remember what it was, but it was 4 pieces with some sauce drizzled over it-YUM!). So, it was kinda worth it to eat a few bites of not-so-good dessert and get some free yummy sushi.
Even though they are always really nice and they made it up to us about the dessert, I have to give an honest rating, for those who are looking to try this place, that's why 4 stars rather than 5.
Despite the less than stellar dessert(who goes to a sushi joint for cheesecake, anyway?), I HIGHLY recommend Mio Hollywood to anyone who is looking for some good sushi at a reasonable price. -
Review from Ashley B.
While I have gone to several of the Mio locations, this one is pretty close to my house and doesn't have the wait that the pearl and NW location have on weekends. On average, service has been fairly good with some servers being better than others. In terms of food, Mio is my goto sushi place because they have the best bento box ever. It comes with miso soup, goyza, salad, and two entree choices (I always get tempura and teriyaki). You get a ton of food and it is all really yummy, I always walk out stuffed wishing I would have saved half. Friends that have joined me have liked the sushi and overall I would say this is a good option when you have both sushi eaters and non sushi eaters in your group.

I was starving after working out next door so stopped in for lunch, usually when you are as hungry as I was everything tastes even better but the fried sushi made me feel sickly, no crunch at all on the "crunch" and the "Mt. Raineer" , I believe it was called was slimy like textured. It felt like ten years was taken off my life waiting for them to make my food too and there were 2 people working on it hmm..... While I was waiting a kid came in to use their bathroom, he seemed desperate and she made him buy a soda to use it??!! I wont go back!

No bueno.
Just lack luster sushi. Bland, not a good texture, etc...
I've gone back a couple times, because I hate to think that sushi can bad. But it is, here at least.
With so many fantastic sushi options in Portland, I would drive a little longer to go someplace worthwhile.Listed in: Sush-ay Time!

I'm a teriyaki fan, and their bento combo lunch is among the best. The sauce is a deep, rich soy, but not one-note like some other places. And the chicken is nicely char-grilled. I also ordered a stir-fry chicken dish that was flavorful and spicy. And the prices are remarkably low for a Japanese restaurant.
My only gripe is that both times I went there for lunch it took 40 minutes to get served. And the place was maybe 25 percent full. So not a good choice if you're on your lunch hour. -

Meh... I know everyone is so in love with Mio Sushi and I am just not a fan. I miss San Francisco for my sushi... *cry* but I have had better places in Portland than Mio.
I do love their staff! They are super friendly and always helpful but the food is just not my fav....
Thanks for employing nice people Mio... but I will eat sushi elsewhere =( -

Not bad, they've got a good selection of stuff on the menu. Didn't have to wait for a table, but service and food was a little slow. Can't really blame em too much, there was a lot of people getting to go food. (argghh).
I'd definitely go back! -

Went around 8:30 on a Wednesday night.
no probs sitting at the sushi bar (which I prefer). The service was fast and friendly and the fish was excellent! the prices were decent, too.
Went with my bro who hadn't had much experience with sushi and he gobbled it down...a bit too fast I think.
Will go back again and possibly expand on this review. -

I've been going to this Mio Sushi location semi-frequently lately, as one of my friends lives close by. We're always quick to get a table here, and at night the atmosphere of the restaurant is quite pleasant. The staff is incredibly friendly, as others have mentioned. But this isn't what I love about Mio Sushi.
What I love about Mio Sushi is their vegetarian yakisoba bento box. I can spend $9.95 for a large bento box that has vegetarian yakisoba, vegetable rolls, a salad, and rice, and for that amount of money it's enough food for both my girlfriend and I to feel like we've eaten a good and healthy amount of food. When we just get sushi we tend to spend less than $14 for the two of us to feel well-fed. If you're vegetarian, or just not feeling like fish, Mio Sushi is a great place to pick up food. -

La Mirada, CA
I've had sushi from all over the country and I'll admit, I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of sushi on the east-side of Portland.
Pros:
Price (I paid 12 bucks for 13 large sized pieces, and I'm a big guy - I was beyond full after 11).
Flavor - double crunch had that sweet deep-friend orange flavorness to it. California roll was good and the Portland and Oregon rolls sounded absolutely outstanding. My friend got the spider roll and I swear there was a real spider in there haha.
Cons:
Service..our waitress was nice but after I ordered she immediately tells me "even though I say 5 pieces...it's the same size as the 8"...really? Is this a game show where I just got the wrong answer? Thanks miss...
Bathroom was clean (I'm a stickler for that) but the overall decor had more of a Portland vibe then Asian thing which is fine by me. All in all, a decent expierence. -

Mio is ok. It's down the street and next to the gym, so I go there when I am craving sushi and feeling lazy.
I love raw fish. I have a fear of mayo and I've never tried their "sushi pizza". I normally get sashimi, miso soup and tempura.
Sometimes I get sashimi to go and I am dazzled by the delicious fresh fish. Other times, I've had a bite and spit it out, because the texture is suspicious. Sometimes the cuts are buttery and delicious, other times it's mostly connective tissue and strange.
I'm confused by people who "love" mio sushi. I've been to other locations, it's not all that. If it weren't down the street, I wouldn't go.
I think if you want authentic Japanese, you should go to Hillsboro. Or go to Sinju and have super white tuna. -

I like Mio Sushi; it's close to home, right next door to my gym, the service is friendly and welcoming, and the food is usually just fine. I really like their miso soup and their seaweed salad (a bit pricy, but yummy), and their sushi is mostly quite good. I am a regular customer.
A couple of times, I have gotten one type of fish that was a bit less than fresh, and once, a fancy roll I ordered was not made according to the way the menu described it. Except for those occasions, I have found dining at Mio a pleasure. I hope to visit again to try their Happy Hour menu sometime soon. -

I live within walking distance of Mio Sushi and have been going there almost once per week since February. I tend to stick with some of the basics off their a la carte menu, including maki with salmon/tuna/crab/unagi. By sticking with these simple foods, I focus on the taste and quality of the fish.
Mio Sushi has always impressed me with their quality and their prices are very reasonable, though not cheap. I am always welcomed and treated very well when I go there. There have been a few times I've caught them during a busy time, and the staff is clearly overwhelmed. Drop by for an early lunch or dinner and I don't think you'll be disappointed. -

I've been to mio sushi a dozen times and i have yet to be disappointed. usually i get a sushi combo for lunch or dinner to go but today i took my babe and sweetie out for lunch and we got a couple of the bento combos. holy hell! not only was the presentation beautiful , the bento boxes were jut so adorable, but the flavors were divine. i ordered the "california roll, tempura, gyozo, salad, miso, and rice combo and my sweetie got a teriaky salmon, tempura, gyozo, salad, miso and rice combo.
I have no idea what they put in the salad but it was amazing. the dressing was orange and i was afraid at first but upon first bike it was like an oralgasm. it was tangy and sweet and yet slightly spicy and everything i love. the lettuce was crisp and the veggies were so fresh.
the tempura was hot and crisp and it included shrimp, yam, squash, asparagus and more. they gave us a sweet tempura sauce to dip it in which was great as well.
i usually like gyozo steamed and they fried theirs but i was not disappointed. it was lovely. the miso and rice was great as well. not my favorite miso but i did not hesitate to scarf it down.
the califonia rolls were perfect and accompanied a heaping pile of ginger, yum!
my sweeties teriyake salmon was freaking amazing! the salmon was grilled to perfection and drenched in a sweet teriyake sauce. OMG! i definitely sneaked more than my fare share off his plate.
i will be coming here more often for dates to sample all the different bento combos and perhaps their selection of sake and Japanese beers. i would also like to give a shout out to the woman that's always working there. you rock! your attentive and kind and always chipper and friendly. your doing food service right! -

Mediocre sushi, extremely slow service. The seaweed salad was good but the portion was tiny for the money. The seaweed in the salad amounted to about two tablespoons, with the rest taken up by cucumber. The udon noodle soup was average. My search for good sushi in a not-superfancy place in Portland continues.

This place is terrible. I will never go back there. I literally had rotten fish served to me. Hamachi should not smell like rotten fish and should not be so ghastly slimy that you have to spit it out. I have been to numerous sushi places nation-wide, but this is the worse food I have ever had. Must be this location, because the NW location is pretty good.

We went to this Mio for the second time this Saturday and I have to say so far this is our favorite neighborhood sushi joint. Clean/simple atmosphere, friendly, no wait, and dependable straight forward sushi! We tried the terriyaki & organic sake this time because it was chilly out and loved them both. The bento box terriyaki is a more than generous portion (couldn't finish) and the gooey sauce was super yum! The sake was supposed to be bubbly but wasn't, didn't affect the flavor or how bubbly we were after drinking it. We also appreciated the fond greeting & farewell from the staff.

Tonight I had the absolute BEST experience I have ever had eating out. I wasn't feeling well when I was working out and suddenly became very weak. I have had some health problems over the last year that sometimes make me severely hypoglycemic...to the point I have not been able to pick up utensils or get money out of my wallet because my hands shake violently. My brain gets funny and my words slur and it is like I am very drunk in every way. Walking out of the gym I realized I would be a wreck by the time I got home and decided as sweaty as I was, still in work out clothes... I was just going to have to sit down at Mio Sushi. As soon as I sat down it all hit and I NEEDED food.
With all the dignity I could I begged the sushi chef for a slice of any fish he could pretty much just hand me to eat. He obliged and looked a little worried. I was shaking so bad I could barely pick it up with both of my hands. (I couldn't even get the chopsticks off the table.) I think the chef sensed something was wrong and that I NEEDED food. He just kept making one piece on a plate and handing it to me. And they were amazing. (Some white fish with rice vinegar, a dab of spice, green onion, and bonito flakes.) After about 5 completely different bites, the shaking slowed and while I tried to read the menu two of the loveliest waitresses talked to me and brought me water and miso. They treated me like I was the star patron of the establishment and in no way made me feel bad or weird that I was having a little problem.
Once my body slowed down and I could think, then they just talked to me and made me feel absolutely and truly welcome and like I was a friend. I have never had an experience like it. I wanted to just hug each chef and each waitress to me so they could understand how their service was better than how my Mom takes care of me when I am ill. It was fantastic, healing, and deep down I just needed someone to be a little nice to me today. On a scale of 1-10, your service rated a 19 and your food an 11. (I suggest just asking the chef to be creative if they aren't too busy. What he made me wasn't on the menu and was a 100 times better than what I ordered.)
Thank you, Mio Sushi.... without your wonderful service, I'd probably be shaking the rest of the night and feeling really bad, instead of enjoying my time at home and feeling taken care of. -

I fall into the category of "big fan" of Mio Sushi. I've been to many of the Portland locations over the years and currently Hollywood is the one we frequent the most due to its close proximity. I guess it depends on what you order but I've found the sushi to be very good in taste/texture. The baked green mussels give me food orgasm EVERY TIME. Seriously. And, its always great to knock the socks off a friend from out-of-town with the Sushi "pizza". Mio is a casual dining experience, for sure. But the staff is always very nice. Their prices are reasonable. Mio is definitely our standard "go to" when it comes to affordable sushi.

i went in for an early lunch, and straight away, the staff was super cheery and attentive. the food however was not very good. the sushi was warmer than i would expect it should be. the tako was downright gross. i had couldn't finish it. i suspect some of the fish was NOT fresh.
