Howdy Partner!
Step back in time at the Minturn Saloon with it's quirky, homey and crude decor and servers. Crude is not meant to be an insult, rather the decor and servers add to the environment. This place has enough character plus, some. The plank floors, signed movie star pictures on the wall, sun withered, long haired wait staff that have been with the restaurant for for 20+ years, enormous bull horns hanging-yep it's an experience.
Now, the food is Mexican with an offering of thick and tasty barbecue as well- not exceptional, but with pitchers of beer or margaritas to wash it down the caliber goes way up.
Try this place after a long day of skiing as the portions and the atmosphere is huge....bring along a bunch of rowdy friends-this place is not for the quiet or shy-and be ready for a good time. I can almost see the rounds of tequila now...
Cuervo Tradicional Margaritas, chips with salsa and guacamole, and the best quail this side of the Mississippi. Enough said! I will say it was far quieter than expected...I've been going here for probably 15 years now and have never seen it so dead during peak ski season! Great to not have to wait for a table but the crazy packed scene is part of its charm. The food was still excellent though! Ask for the special hot stuff to spice up the salsa!
Specialties
Named to Esquire Magazine's "Best in America" list (June 2007), the Minturn Saloon is the most historic restaurant in the Vail/Beaver Creek area. Located in the old railroad and mining town of Minturn, the Minturn Saloon is just minutes away from the resorts and takes you to what real Colorado is all about - casual, comfortable with a huge wood burning fireplace. AAA magazine writes: "A mix of Mexican food, wild game birds, and ribs are on the menu at the Minturn Saloon, not far from Vail. It's as homey and affordable as Vail is upscale, and typifies Colorado cuisine at its best." The Minturn Saloon is the popular end of the Minturn Mile, accessed from Vail Mountain. The Minturn Saloon opens for cocktails and dinner in the afternoon. Durning the summer the Minturn Saloon has one of the best riverside outdoor decks anywhere. City Magazine says the Minturn Saloon has the "best margarita in the Rockies" (Oct. 20007). Great for groups, families, corporate outings, and weddings.
History
Established in 1976
The Minturn Saloon building was constructed in 1901.Jeff Taylor bought the restaurant back in the 1938. He was a sparing partner of World Champion boxer and Colorado native Jack Dempsey. Bob Cherry purchased it in 1976, and changed it to "The Saloon Across the Street From the Eagle River Hotel". Bob had been a professional baseball player with the New York Yankee organization and fighter pilot in the Korean War. He put the original Saloon menus together featuring his love for game birds, ribs, and the tastes of Mexico. The first pieces of memorabilia to go up on the Saloon wall were of Bob's baseball buddies and his good friend, John Wayne.
Andy Kaufman, Steve Campbell, and Bobby Pelz bought the Minturn Saloon in July of 1986. It is the après-ski destination of "out of bounds" Vail skiers experiencing the "Minturn Mile", considered one of the premiere out of area runs in North America.
